10 Bible Verses You Should Know By Heart

Finger pointing to verse in the Bible - The Best Bible Verses To Memorize

Our hearts and our minds are always in need of God’s love. The best way to fill that need is to memorize scripture. It is rewarding, helps us to better understand God’s Word, and will make you a better witness for the Lord. If you are wondering where to start, these are some of the best Bible verses to memorize.

1. Genesis 1:1

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

This is the first verse in the Bible and the foundation of all that comes after. God creating the universe is a story every Christian should know and every Christian should be able to share.

2. John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

If you had to summarize what the Gospels mean this the Bible verse you would turn to. It so simply tells how God loves us so much that He sacrificed his only Son so that we can be saved from an eternal life in Hell. Memorize this one and share it often.

3. Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This verse builds on the last. The penalty of sin is death, but God sent his son, Jesus, to give us a chance at eternal life. God’s gift is free and this is a good verse to remind us of that.

4. John 14:6

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.’”

To be with God you must first commit yourself to Jesus. He died on the cross for us as the ultimate and final sacrifice. He is our way to God and when somebody asks how we know this should be one of the first verses we should be able to recite.

5. Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

This verse is a great reminder that you cannot earn salvation because God gave us this gift freely. Through Christ we can do great works, but just being good or doing good things will not get us to Heaven.

6. James 4:7

“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

If you ever feel like the devil is working against you, remember this verse and pray. God will drive the evil from you and through prayer you can set yourself back on His path.

7. Jeremiah 29:11

“‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.’”

Have you ever had one of those moments where you feel lost or are just drifting through life and unsure where you are going? Recite this verse to yourself to remind you that God has a plan for you. Though you may feel lost roday, trust that God will show you your path when the time is right.

8. Psalms 37:4-5

“Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He will do it.”

God can make anything possible once you have committed yourself to Him. With this verse remind yourself to trust in Him and He will bring you great joy.

9. Philippians 4:13

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

God is our rock and whenever we need Him He is there. Use this verse to give yourself the strength that you need to overcome any obstacle because you can do anything through God.

10. Proverbs 3:5-6

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Sometimes we want to trust in ourselves and doubt in God’s plan may creep into our thoughts. If you find that happening recite this verse and trust in Him for He will keep us on the path He has set for us.

There are many other verses for one to commit to heart and in the future I plan to share even more Bible verses to memorize with you. In the mean time, if you need some inspiration for Valentine’s Day tomorrow, check out these verses to share with your valentine.

The verses above are from the New American Standard Bible. If you are looking for another version of the Bible you can find them here at the BibleGateway.
