Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend: Podcast Review

Talk-show host Conan O’Brien lets loose in a free-wheeling hour of absurdity in Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Under the premise of vetting a wide range of guests for possible friends, O’Brien reminisces, improvises and delves deep with his guests. He is joined by assistant Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley, his years of rapport with Movsesian and rivalry with Gourley providing bright bookends to each episode.

The Host: O’Brien has been a talk show host for almost 30 years, and knows how to conduct an interview. By turns a grandiose caricature and a self-deprecating ball of insecurities, always with an unexpected jab or spiel on his tongue, he is as much a draw as his guests.

The Guests: From fellow comedians, actors he has interviewed for decades, to politicians and public figures – Conan’s long career gives him the clout to pull in big names, but he also favours guests with whom he has history and a rapport.

Highlights include Timothy Olyphant’s insistence on interrupting with his own unsponsored ad-reads, Jeff Goldblum’s surreal stream of consciousness, and, on a heavier note, Stephen Colbert’s raw and powerful recounting of his childhood experiences of profound tragedy.
