Gutting the Sacred Cow Podcast: Podcast Review

Gutting the Sacred Cow Podcast

Are you familiar with the term ‘sacred cow’? It’s the term you use when you’re talking about an idea, custom, or institution considered to be above criticism, especially unreasonably. The term, a reference to this not-to-be-touched animal in the Hindu culture, is even used to describe canons with near-universal approval such as a movie, a book, a TV show, or an album that’s beloved by the majority of the public. If you dare say something negative about them, you’re met with scorn and disdain for not appreciating the work as you should.

The Gutting the Sacred Cow Podcast exists to fight those notions that any work is untouchable and without flaws, as the podcast dares to examine, dissect, and point out the shortcomings and inconsistencies of the most renowned movies out there. You will likely recognize virtually all the works in the episode list, so if you’re interested in listening to people talk about film history classics with fair judgment, this is the podcast for you.

The Hosts: Who are these people who dare to dissect the sacred cows? Kevin Gootee and Kevin Israel are comedians and big fans of movies. You may have heard about them before – Kevin Gootee was the director and writer of the TV series Comics Watching Comics and Fantasy Football Jibber Jabber, while Kevin Israel created the web series B.R.O’s and Gym Clowns.

Both of them are funneling their charisma and wit into this podcast, and they are ready to shamelessly tear apart the sacred cows of the film universe. Their way of keeping the discussion light and friendly means you will enjoy their arguments and opinions, even when you don’t agree with them. They’re also excellent when interacting with their guests, seamlessly encouraging them to talk and ensuring the discussion flows smoothly throughout the episode.

The Guests: Many comedians have been guests in this podcast. Perhaps some names are familiar to you! You’ll find Ray Gootz, Keren Margolis, Joanne Nosuchinsky, among others, just to name some of the most recent guests.

The guest is the one bringing the controversial opinions this podcast deals with; every episode is fresh and different. You can count on that every comedian guest taking part in this show will bring some very interesting opinions. You may even find yourself agreeing with some of them! Will you change your mind and see the flaws in the most beloved movies? There’s only one way to find out.

Why You Have to Listen: The format of the podcast is simple: the guests come and argue why these famous movies are undeserving of the fame and recognition they have, and the hosts will listen and discuss these arguments – sometimes they’re big fans of the movie they’re discussing; other times they have less favorable opinions. The main draw is that the guest tries to convince the hosts – and by extent the listener – that these movies are very flawed. It’s all about having a good time. After all, listening to Mr. Gootee and Mr. Israel’s debate with their guests is enough to brighten up your day.

As we mentioned before, the movies they talk about are some of the most renowned films in their genres. The Goonies, Jurassic Park, Titanic, Grease, and many other household names are discussed extensively. You don’t need to pick a side before listening to an episode. Perhaps you’ll find it even more fun if they talk about a movie you’re neutral about and treat this as the hosts and the guest trying to convince you to side with them. Will you end up agreeing with the guest? Or perhaps you will identify yourself more with the hosts’ opinions? The fun is in finding out.

Currently there are 24 episodes of almost one hour of length, with new episodes about film history classics being released every week.
