Kamala Khan (is) MS.MARVEL “It’s not really the Brown girls from Jersey City who save the world” -Kamala KhanKamala Khan's superpower is...time management? Kamala ain’t just a household name because of the Vice President - she’s also the star of MS. MARVEL - her own Marvel TV series NOW on Disney+ (starring Iman Vellani - but also past guest Azhar Usman). We’ve long said that this Pakistani American superhero from Jersey City, NJ is arguably one of the most important new characters in pop culture of the new Millenium (alongside Miles Morales, of course)So we figured we’d replay a 2021 episode from Raman’s other podcast Quarantined Comics (bc we were into Ms.Marvel WAY before it was cool). Featuring FrieMMd-of-the-pod Ryan Joe and OUR favorite Pakistani American superhero - Lena Shareef, who you may remember from our inaugural Ramadan series way back when in 2021 (Lena also co-hosts the most awesome podcast “Grounded Geeks” with her brother Aman) - we kinda geek out about how much we LOVE this character and this comic.Kamala Khan - aka MS.MARVEL - was created in 2014 by award-winning novelist and Muslim American G. Willow Wilson. Kamala's just trying to get her homework done, nerd out with fan-fic / MMORPGs, figure out her relationship with her religious brother, come to terms with her best friends, and meet the expectations of her immigrant parents. Enjoy our super-nerdy, super grounded conversation about Kamala Khan, with spoilers for the comic - not the TV show. You can start streaming/binging the show after - and thanking us later.LEARN ABOUT

Jonathan Tran’s (dismantling) theology “You can't tell the story of American racism without also telling the story of American religion.”Dr. Jonathan Tran is a Christian Theologian and author in the heart of Texas (Waco) - currently serving as a professor of philosophical theology at Baylor University. Jonathan's originally from Southern California - by way of Vietnam - who never would have imagined a Christian vocation. Jonathan completed his graduate studies in theology and ethics at Duke University and has published really interesting works like “Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism” (2021), and “The Vietnam War and Theologies of Memory” (2010). Jonathan’s research focuses on human life in language, and what that life reveals about God and God’s world. Lately, that research has taken Jonathan in the direction of thinking through race and racism - attempting to present racism as a theological problem, a political-economic distortion of the divine economy, and a problem given to the usual redress, the church laying claim to God’s original revolution. Jonathan was actually recommended to us by a listener, and you’ll appreciate hearing this intense conversation - especially as we all go through our own human experiences wondering about the big picture - and how each of our religious and societal experiences informs it.LEARN ABOUT JONATHAN

They Only Come Out At Night | NITE DRIFT with Jim Perry This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp.com/euphometOn this edition; Vicki Joy Anderson on the phenomenon of Sleep Paralysis and her new book They Only Come Out At Night: Exposing the Dark Weapon of Sleep ParalysisCome see Jim in Chicago at the Music Box Theater on AUG 24 - Get tickets here!****"Historically, SP sufferers have told macabre stories of dark entities, shadow people, paralyzation, and terror. But in this new era of paranormal disclosure, the false prophets coming to us from beyond the veil aren’t baring vampiric fangs or cackling like hags—they are presenting themselves as angels, spirit guides, or dearly departed loved ones. Rather than fright, victims express being filled with almost orgasmic levels of joy, peace, and love after encountering these beings. And while these experiences might bring on a temporary high, these “angelic” entities have the same end game as their historical “demonic” counterparts—to lure us into the arms of an awaiting messiah—their messiah, not ours."Guest; Vicki Joy Anderson graduated from University of Northwestern in St. Paul, MN majoring in Bible and English with a writing emphasis. Cycle of Lives with David Richman Listen in to my conversation with David Richman who rode his bike 5,000 miles to explore the emotional journey of cancer.  After losing his sister to brain cancer, David was led to do something incredible that can inspire us all.  In this chat we talk about his intense and unique fundraiser in his sister's memory which was writing a book, Cycle of Lives.  This book is the result of 15 people’s stories, 5,000 miles and a journey through the emotional chaos of cancer.  David shares what motivated him to deeply explore  emotional journeys with cancer and the various traumas in their lives that affected their experience.  I love how he pulled it all together in his book where the stories are interwoven amongst the narrative of David’s solo 5,000-mile bike ride to go meet the book participants.   He shares some of the interconnected stories of people overcoming trauma.  David generously donates 100% of the net proceeds of the book to various cancer-related charities picked by the book participants or their survivors.  Cancer and other diseases come with so much physical impact.  I love seeing how David was able to create a safe space to talk about the tough emotions that come with it.   Thanks for listening.  Hugs, Lorri

162 // Kal Penn // You Can't Be Serious Kal Penn, actor, author, and former White House staffer during the Obama Administration, joins Jerry to talk about a whole host of topics, including the paperback release of his book You Can’t Be Serious. Kal shares about his family’s story of becoming Asian American, battling imposter syndrome as an actor, and going from Hollywood to D.C. to work in the Obama Administration. Listen in as Jerry and Kal discuss who Kal’s book is for, the unexpected impact of Harold & Kumar, and what keeps him hopeful right now.Meet KalKal Penn has played leading roles in some of the world’s most-watched television shows, including How I Met Your Mother, 24, Designated Survivor, House, and more. He currently stars on the Disney Junior animated series Mira, Royal Detective. He was also the cocreator and star of the NBC/Universal comedy Sunnyside, and host, cocreator, and executive producer of a six-episode series in October 2020 for Disney’s Freeform Channel called Kal Penn Approves This Message, aimed at entertaining and informing young voters. On the big screen, Kal has starred in movies that have collectively grossed more than a billion dollars, including the Harold and Kumar franchise, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Superman Returns, The Namesake, and many other critically acclaimed blockbuster titles. He has also served as an adjunct lecturer in sociology and film studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and in sociology and political science at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kal has worked at the very highest levels of politics, as an Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, where he was President Obama’s Liaison to Young Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and the Arts communities in America. He was born and raised in New Jersey.About You Can't Be Serious! The star of the Harold and Kumar franchise, House, and Designated Survivor recounts why he rejected the advice of his aunties and guidance counselors and, instead of becoming a doctor or “something practical,” embarked on a surprising journey that has included confronting racism in Hollywood, meeting his future husband, and working in the Obama administration, in this “incredibly joyful and insightful” (Kiefer Sutherland) memoir. You Can’t Be Serious is a series of funny, consequential, awkward, and ridiculous stories from Kal Penn’s idiosyncratic life. It’s about being the grandson of Gandhian freedom fighters, and the son of immigrant parents: people who came to this country with very little and went very far—and whose vision of the American dream probably never included their son sliding off an oiled-up naked woman in the raunchy Ryan Reynolds movie Van Wilder…or getting a phone call from Air Force One as Kal flew with the country’s first Black president.“By turns hilarious, poignant, and inspiring” (David Axelrod, New York Times bestselling author), Kal reflects on the most exasperating and rewarding moments from his journey so far. He pulls back the curtain on the nuances of opportunity and racism in the entertainment industry and recounts how he built allies, found encouragement, and dealt with early reminders that he might never fit in. He describes his initially unpromising first date with his now-fiancé Josh, involving an 18-pack of Coors Light and an afternoon of watching NASCAR. And of course, he reveals how, after a decade and a half of fighting for and enjoying successes in Hollywood, he made the terrifying but rewarding decision to take a sabbatical from a fulfilling acting career for an opportunity to serve his country as an Obama White House aide.Above all, You Can’t Be Serious shows that everyone can have more than one life story. The book “is insightful, funny, and instructive for anyone who’s ever grappled with how they fit into the American dream” (Ronan Farrow, New York Times bestselling author), and demonstrates that no matter who you are and where you come from, you have many more choices than those presented to you. And okay, yes, it’s also about how Kal accidentally (and very stupidly) accepted an invitation to take the entire White House Office of Public Engagement to a strip club—because, let’s be honest, that’s the kind of stuff you really want to hear about.IG @kalpenn Twitter @kalpennFB - https://www.facebook.com/kalpenn// Support Dear Asian Americans:Merch: https://www.bonfire.com/store/dearasianamericans/Buy Me a Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/jerrywonLearn more about DAA Creator and Host Jerry Won:LinkedIn: <a href="https://www.linkedin.

we have to fail sometimes (part 2) welcome back for part two of my series on failure. the first episode in this series was about failing as a human being. this episode is a little bit different because it's actually about failing in your endeavors. maybe that's job-related, something creative, school-related, a new hobby...failing in our endeavors in life. right now in our society, it's hard to fail...it kind of feels like there's no room for it. so i want to share some tools i've found that makes trying something new easier or a little more enjoyable and decreases the fear of failure. here we go. Spoilers, sometimes adventures are less about the places you go and more about the people who journey with you. Let’s get started.
With one scrumptious “byte” of Audio Stew, you’ll be craving a second helping! Each episode features a conversation with either a friend, family member, acquaintance, group of hooligans, or maybe even my neighbor’s dog! Episode 180: Our Hall Passes: Asian Men Edition Today, we are celebrating Asian men in pop culture and media: those who made an impact on our lives growing up, and those we now admire for using their platforms to advocate for their community. These men have certainly proved that society’s measure of “hotness” has expanded beyond the notion that Asian men are not appealing, and should continue to expand. We reveal who our first Asian male celebrity crushes were, which actors we would want to star alongside in our theoretical biopics, and discuss how our personal definitions of “attractiveness” have changed over time. Who are your past and current Asian celebrity crushes, and why?

Type 1 on 1: The Diaries - An insulin injection to the face We’re channelling the chill vibes today as poor Ami has lost her voice, and whatever she’s fighting off is sending her blood glucose soaring. Jen’s also struggling with high glucose readings that are sneakily creeping up on her after she’s gone to sleep. Rude.We discuss the psychology of feeling guilty for choosing certain sugars from one day to the next, and while there’s no full escapades this week, Jen had an *almost* incident with her only remaining full, very fragile vial of insulin…There’s also talk of a few needle mishaps, as anyone who’s lived with type 1 diabetes for any amount of time can understand. Word of caution: don’t wave an uncapped needle anywhere near your eye on a moving vehicle.Welcome to Type 1 on 1: The Diaries! Writer and broadcaster Jen Grieves and producer Ami Bennett are good friends - who both happen to live with type 1 diabetes. For this special spin-off series of Type 1 on 1, nana diabetic Jen (25 years) and baby diabetic Ami (3 years) chat through the frustrating, funny and challenging experiences they’ve faced each week thanks to this ridiculous condition. All in the hope that their stories might help you too. Thanks so much to Ypsomed MyLife Diabetescare for sponsoring this episode. https://www.mylife-diabetescare.com/en/Come and say hi on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/missjengrieves/https://www.instagram.com/amilovesyoumore/
