Grooming before the interview This has to be said. Groom yourself before the interview. Clean yourself up. Shower/Deodorant. Brush your teeth. Comb/brush your hair. Use mouthwash if your breath is nasty. Wash your hands and clean and trim your nails. Shave if necessary. Don’t look unkempt. The grunge look is out. Remember, you are trying to sell yourself to the interviewer. Bring the best version of you to the interview. What the interviewer sees is what they will expect to get. Set yourself up for success. Proper grooming is a must do.
Confident vs. Cocky Be confident in yourself but don’t be cocky. There’s a difference. Be self-assured of yourself. Be honest. Be yourself. Smile and stand up straight. Give yourself a pep talk before coming into the interview.

Building Trust In The Workplace – tips for HR I read something recently saying that organizations who trust HR are 2.9x more likely to rate them as highly effective. This would make it so much easier to get ALL our work done so I knew I had to do some episodes on trust.
I reached out to ILa Edgar who is co-Host of a show called Trust on Purpose with Charles Feltman. She is also a coach and was a recruiter for years, so she has insight into HR:
1) The first thing is we need to care. About the client and the business.
?️ Trust building is a skill and one you can discuss directly with clients
? Even when there are limitations on us that our client might not appreciate, there are things we can do to maintain trust.
?️ When clients talk about HR instead of to HR, there's some mistrust. We can deal with that head on too.

The Duty To Accommodate – How Far Do You Have To Go? The question: Is it undue hardship or is it a regular hardship? Those of us in HR in Canada need to consider this. And we can always brush up on the duty to accommodate so check out this video.
This was the focus of my conversation with Dylan Snowdon. Dylan is an Employment Lawyer and Instructor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary. This is something he is asked about a lot and here are some of his insights: ✅ You have to accommodate, but can consider those accommodations that have the least impact on the employer. ? Accommodations can take many forms, and it doesn't always have to be a big or complicated solution. ? The difficult accommodations are when there are a lot of unknowns or the employer is not accepting. Mental health often falls in this category. ? Whenever someone requests accommodation, the duty has been triggered. Remember, the duty to accommodate is an important part of creating an inclusive workplace. By making reasonable efforts to accommodate the needs of employees, employers can create a workplace that is welcoming and supportive of all employees.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

In recent years, studies have shown that increases of around 25% have been recognised in the impact of mental heath upon absenteeism and quiet leaving.
The RAW index can show strengths and gaps in teams and abilities, even when they are not recognised on a business level.
Data creates a "why". Often, training and mentor is done "to" a person, instead of taking into account their personalised data, and which areas require attention.
Values are the key to resilience as they provide purpose and direction during times when we find ourselves challenged. They keep us going when it matters.

BEST MOMENTS
'How you show up at work and how you show up at home are all linked'
'We can develop meaningful bespoke programmes for each individual'
'What they are working on is specific to them'
'We want companies to be in a position where they don't need us'

Episode 108: The Leap to Becoming a Top Executive In this episode, Joyce shares the 15 skills and habits that top executives at Delhaize identified to being successful as an executive committee member. While some of the skills and habits can be learned, many new top executives require new ways of thinking, being, and doing to make the grade.

In this episode, we discussed:

The need for knowing when to slow down versus when to speed up.
What is required in terms of energy and stamina as a top executive.
The delicate dance of focusing forward, outward, and inward to shape a future vision.
Why being humble and self-assured must exist side-by-side.

So… Come on in. Grab a snack. Welcome!
Talking 'Bout My Generation More than ever before the workforce consists of so many different generations than ever before as people live and work longer. Alongside that, HR has a huge task of ensuring that age discrimination and ageism is not prevalent in an organisation and in the UK this obligation is by law. On top of that, HR hold a responsibility to ensure that they create a people strategy and employee experience that attracts and retains talent across that broad demography.

Adding in the challenges associated with the ‘Gen Z’ers and the fact the British government is urging that over-50s should ‘get off the golf course’ and return to work to help the UK tackle its labour shortage. Workforce demography is throwing all sorts of challenges at the HR/People Profession.

But fear not, Hosting HR and our expert panel are here to help!

Questions pitched such as…
• The WHO report that 1 in 2 people are ageist against older people, what can HR do to combat ageism in the workplace?
• Are demographic 'groups' (baby-boomers, Millennials, Gen Z etc) useful for HR, or do they inadvertently fuel ageism?
• Are today’s young people (Gen Z’ers) the most challenging demographic group for businesses to attract and then retain?

Panel:

Lisa Haggar – Highly influential HR leader who has worked across numerous industries & ownership models. Popular with so many for her straight-talking, outspoken, no BS style. Lisa has been featured in countless publications, podcasts and speaking events. Lisa recently conducted a research project on young people with some interesting outcomes.

Lucy Standing – Co-Founder of Brave Starts, a NFP offering community based career guidance and support for people over 50. Lucy is a Chartered Business Psychologist and her own mission in how to help those over 45 best utilise their time in the world of work. Lucy has been seen in parliament advising the government and ministers on a range of issues for the over-50s.

Michael Easton – Michael is a global C-level HR practitioner who in the last few years has had a portfolio freelance career advising, consulting and supporting business and HR leaders on a range of matters and he also sits on the Advisory Boards at Brave Starts. Michael has developed award-winning people strategies and is fascinated by the multi-generational workforce and the matter of age and ageism in the workplace.

Guest Alistair Moes on Anger Management | HR 59 Interested in learning more about the impact of shame and the inner critic, of the toxic shame spiral and our shadow, and of the negative impact that unexpressed anger can have on our health? In this podcast host Susan Ney and her guest Alister Moes explore the importance of anger management. The pain, sadness, hurt, fear, anxiety, shame, and often trauma, are what leads someone to react disproportionately to events. It is only when this is examined, with compassion and deep respect, that a person can alter their response to the triggers in their life and learn to relate to the emotional reactions that have led them astray. Alistair Moes and his team at Moose Anger Management have been humbled and inspired by the many people who have taken up the courage to take on this type of investigation. Hope you decide to join us! About the Guest – Alistair MoesAlistair is an international anger management expert and author. He has been working with people worldwide, and professionally since 1989 as an anger management specialist. He has been in private practice since 1995. He has worked with those who have enormous challenges in the world: from high-performance business leaders, gold medal-winning Olympic and professional athletes, to people that are close to homeless. Anger is indeed an equal opportunity emotion.Alistair has developed a manner of working, which is respectful, solution-focussed and based on both academic theory and extensive experience. This experience includes working with trauma, and historic abuse in a manner that honours each person and allows for deep healing. During the last twenty-eight years, he has worked with thousands of people who have made the call out of a desire to create change. Although he has facilitated court-ordered situations, he now works exclusively with self-referred clients, which includes those sent from the workplace, or strongly encouraged by a partner, or even unfortunately sometimes, a lawyer.Alistair’s approach focuses on the gifts and potential of each person. In this manner “the good” that is present in an individual is attended to, as are the challenges that face each person. He also has extensive experience working with what is behind a person’s anger. As he shares on his website, it is only when this is examined, with compassion and deep respect, that a person can alter their response to the triggers in their life and learn to relate to the emotional reactions that have led them astray. Alistair regularly presents workshops to diverse groups. He also provides counselling for parents with an extensive focus on Dads. He has developed and facilitated parenting groups for Dads and co-facilitated Parenting Together groups for couples. Navigating the Post-Pandemic Landscape Are you still feeling the lingering effects of the pandemic? We dive back into this topic as we noticed how much our earlier episode about Pandemic Fatigue still brings up for our listeners. We’re still finding our way, going from languishing to lingering.

It may seem like we’re expected to go back to normal, but we can’t. We’re in a different place. It’s like we have dug a tunnel and come out on the other side to a different landscape. On the other side, it’s a different world.

We put a lot of work into solving all kinds of problems, with a tremendous amount of creativity, perseverance and resilience – and perhaps we’re not quite as resilient as we’d like to think we are. We paid a heavy price. We had formative experiences.

Even though the official government bodies have declared the pandemic over, there is still a lot of debris and rubble left to be cleaned up and processed, including invisible emotional debris like grief and loss. And that still takes energy.

Take time to recalibrate and celebrate before rushing into post-crisis reconstruction (which is often not the strongest, most constructive). Acknowledge that you are where you are now.

Notice the landscape here and explore this new space.

HR Works Presents Pages of HR: Cultivating Meaningful Partnership at Work Now more than ever, both leaders and their teams crave deeper connection and more authentic relationships. But how can organizations accomplish this goal — particularly knowing that it will require a reset of how leaders and teams interact? Leaders and team members must embrace a new mindset. They need to acknowledge that the leader-team relationship is more than a one-way service-oriented arrangement. Both sides need support equally if the relationship and what they do together is to be successful.

In this episode of Pages, we're joined by Seth R. Silver, Ed.D., principal of Silver Consulting, Inc., and Timothy M. Franz, Ph.D., an Organizational Psychologist, Professor of Psychology, and Chair at St. John Fisher College. Their new book is Meaningful Partnership at Work: How the Workplace Covenant Ensures Mutual Accountability and Success between Leaders and Teams.

Listen in as we discuss how to create a new paradigm of partnership through the development of a workplace covenant. Ultimately, this process enables essential dialogue and engagement, which in turn helps create and continuously improve empathy, respect, trust, alignment, and — ultimately — partnership.

Episode 107: Two Magical Words – “Good Job” Every act of appreciation or gratitude creates a model that gets taken out of the workplace and into the world. We all crave acknowledgement so why don’t bosses do it enough? Bob n'Joyce jump into this topic on the power of boss praise and why it is so stubbornly resisted.

4 conclusions about a positive work culture:

What you do and say (or not) can have a magnified impact.
Command and control engrained habit lurks behind efforts to create a positive culture.
Being seen and acknowledged is essential for energy and commitment to one’s work.
Cosmetic, artificial attempts of appreciation don’t work. Simple and sincere works!
