The OnlySchoolers Podcast: Helping You Homeschool What happens when two homeschool moms, each with an only child, meet at the local ice-skating rink and strike up a friendship? We’re about to find out…We’re Christyn Edwards and Gina Prosch, and we created the OnlySchoolers Podcast and community to share the wisdom and hard-learned lessons of our years homeschooling only children. Our kids spend hours at our local rink each week, and while they skate, we wait…and talk. Our conversation topics range widely, but we always come back to homeschooling. Each of us quickly realized that “onlyschoolers” (our word for home-educating families with just one child) are a small percentage of the homeschool population and while there are plenty of resources for large families, those ideas don’t necessarily translate to the reality of the day-in and day-out of educating just one child. So to paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, we are being the change we want to see in the world: a resource for onlyschoolers. But our ideas aren’t just for onlyschoolers. Jae from Homeschool Yo Kids Speaks Profoundly about the Joy of Homeschooling On today's episode of the Strike a Balance Podcast for Working Homeschool Moms, I have the great pleasure of speaking to Jae from the Homeschool Yo Kid app. She is currently on her home learning journey with two beautiful young souls leading the way.
After 14 years in public education, Jae has developed a homeschool app that allows families to comfortably begin their home learning journey with confidence. Homeschool Yo Kids is for new and seasoned homeschoolers that seek guidance, inspiration, and a confidence builder through the access to various resources, curriculum, activities, and a community to grow with.
There are so many fantastic takeaways from this episode. I love that Jae says we're all qualified to homeschool our kids and that we have a choice as to how to do it. And the fact that she says we need to admit we're not perfect. In her homeschool she says: "I don't know. Let's look it up". I love this! I'm sure you're going to love this episode as much as I do!

S6E135: Literacy- Games and Storytelling with Michael Low Literacy- Games and Storytelling
Michael Low is a writing teacher and curriculum developer with over two decades of experience. He's also a tabletop game designer who designs and runs story-telling games for kids from 7-13 that use the inspirational, collaborative nature of role-playing to get kids writing page after page for the sheer joy of it. You can find his writing classes (homeschool accredited) at LuckOfLegends.com, and his print to play at home monthly games and podcast at StoriesRPG.com.

If you are a regular listener to the show, receive my email newsletter, follow me on social media or are part of the community through Patreon or Clubhouse you will probably know a few things about my beliefs around learning;

1. That learners need to have agency in their lives and learning. Yes, that includes our children.

2. I am a big believer in games and the gamification of learning. In fact Gameschooling is something that I think everyone can incorporate into their homeschool at some point.

3. Learning should be joyful and meaningful. Sure, it can be challenging. But it doesn't have to to be rigorous just to prove it's good or worthy. Learning is not meant to be shameful. It's meant to be fun.

Michael Low also believes in the power of games, (role playing games especially), learner agency and meaning in learning. He also believes in the power of story. That's why he is dedicated to helping young learners write, speak, think, collaborate, think critically and fall in love with storytelling.
In This Episode
I love hearing insight from educators that have chosen to create and support learners in diverse ways that look nothing like what happens within the classroom walls. Learning to write through play? Looking for fun and collaboration in the writing process? Games and stories that engage our children from start to finish? Then listen to this episode. In this episode Michael and I dive into:

The power of learner agency
Why School is a badly designed game
The gaps in the education institution and how we'd like it to shift
His measurement of success~ teaching the skills learners need to learn on their own
You can't learn if you don't trust
Deschooling
The amazing gifts and joys of role playing games
Learning to write through play and games
Collaborative Story Telling Engagement

A Gospel-Centered Home Through Hygge | 145 On today's podcast, we are joined by author, podcast host, and homeschool mom Jamie Erickson. We are continuing our series to help us go back to homeschool with more purpose and clarity that we have ever had before! What Jamie and Leslie will discuss today is something we believe all of us want but sometimes seems hard to find because we have to rearrange our thinking to make it happen. We know today your heart will be encouraged as we discuss hygge (HOO-GUH) in our homeschool and creating a Gospel-centered home through the Danish practice of Hygge.

Meet the Guest:
When she’s not curating memories, hoarding vintage books, or playing ringmaster to her circus of five blissfully abnormal kids, Jamie Erickson can be found encouraging and equipping a growing tribe of mothers all across the globe on the Mom to Mom podcast. Jamie is the author of Homeschool Bravely and her newest book, Holy Hygge: Creating a Place for People to Gather and the Gospel to Grow, launching September 6, 2022.

Today’s episode is brought to you by Trail Life USA. Trail Life is where boys and men thrive! With more than 40,000 members in nearly 900 Troops across all 50 states, homeschool moms and dads are discovering the power of outdoor adventure and badge-based education to engage boys, nurture faith, and awaken a love for learning. Unshackled from the classroom, boys and dads come to life in an environment where faith and understanding grow naturally. Men love the intentional discipleship time carved out with their sons, as together they plan, work, serve, learn, and experience adventure together -- relationships grow, faith becomes real, leadership is learned, and boys grow to become biblically-bold, courageous servant-leaders of faith and character. Clip: August Q&P: Neurodivergence + Homeschool Today we process through this question from a listener: I'd love to hear more about neurodivergence and homeschooling. I have one (probably) neurotypical kid and one who is neurodivergent. Things that would be great to hear about: evaluations/diagnosis, support kids with different needs, how not to feel so alone when you have a kid who can't do typical homeschool things (it's hard to find meaningful connections when a lot of groups don't work for us). I know a lot of this can apply to any kid, but anything you want to share about neurodivergence and homeschool would be welcome! To hear the entire conversation, go to patreon.com/homeschoolunrefined

Your Journey as a Homeschooler As homeschooling parents, we're all trying so hard to get it right. We care deeply about our children and we don’t want to mess this up. It’s a big responsibility to homeschool. And we all take this job VERY seriously. We also have so many doubts. And wonder if we can do it. If we know enough, or are good enough. We sometimes even wonder if our kids would be better off learning from someone else. But in the midst of all that swirl of questioning and self-doubt, we forget about ourselves. We even sometimes forget who we are, who we were before kids. Before this big undertaking of teaching our children at home. We're on a journey of unfolding and self-discovery, too. HOW TO HOMESCHOOL IN MICHIGAN WITH BOOKSHARK VIRTUAL Hear how Michigan Bookshark Virtual works for any family in Michigan and how it might be exactly what you're looking for in your homeschool journey—the perfect blend of print curriculum with online support and accountability. With this program, students are mostly learning via reading, discussing, hands-on experiments, and math manipulatives. Only about 25% of the time are students working on the computer. So this isn't a typical computer-based, highly screen-dependent program. It's a book-based program with a virtual component for assessment, grading, and recordkeeping.
Jen Myers: "...being an educator, one of the things that I looked at was the standards. I went through each grade level, each subject to really comb through that to see, 'Is this meeting grade level?' And when I saw that it covered the standards and benchmarks for Michigan, I thought, 'Well, this could be a great fit for our families who do want the option to learn online.' And so then as we started to use it with our families, I just kept hearing more and more positive feedback on how much they loved the materials, loved the curriculum, loved the supplemental activities, loved having online teachers work with their kids. Here they had been homeschooling and everything was on their shoulders as far as preparing the curriculum, doing the grading. And now, these parents were able to step to a facilitator role where the curriculum is set for them and there's other teachers grading, especially like with the language arts. They loved having someone else grade the papers that their students were writing."
Our guests are Jen Myers, Partnership Program Director at Alpena Schools, and Gwyn Domke, the BookShark Coordinator. Find out about your eligibility to receive FREE curriculum through Michigan BookShark Virtual:

Special Replay: Homeschool Curriculum Buying Guide Homeschool Curriculum Buying Guide - What to Buy & Where
Thanks to our sponsor Media Angels Membership site – where you can find K-12 Science Curriculum, novels, and resources for history and writing.

First of all, there is no one perfect curriculum and believe me I’ve made mistakes. When my son was five I purchased a math curriculum and he was struggling so much, I decided to buy another one mid-year at someone’s recommendation. That too turned into a disaster.

The best way to buy homeschool curriculum is to know what you are looking for. But before you do this, please listen to the past podcasts on the topic of curriculum. There I give you specific questions to think about as well as where to go to get great reviews.

All curriculum will not work for all kids. One child may love a math program while another will struggle to get through a lesson. Look at your kids, take note of what they can do or not do and then go from there. We work to remediate weaknesses and build on their strengths. Parents, if your kids are struggling all day the retention of knowledge is not going to be great. If your child is struggling academically get help. One of the podcasts on this network is - Brain Coach Tips Podcast visit the podcast page and listen to past podcasts that can help you plan accordingly.

We need to encourage our kids, set up their day in small chunks of learning if they are younger and work on a plan ahead of time to alleviate as much frustration as we can. The next podcast in this series is on using forms in your homeschool—and if you are on the mailing list you are receiving these in the monthly planning packs you can print out to use with your family.

If you are not on the Ultimate Homeschool Podcast Network email list – please join it today. Each month there is a freebie that will help you in your homeschool journey.

How will you teach history? Ancient, World, American? Are you interested in incorporating faith, relationship, family and worldview values?

These are the types of questions you need to ask before you buy.

First, we will discuss what you are looking for, then where to research and finally where to purchase!

S6E134: It's Called Unschooling It's Called Unschooling
I don’t like labels. I feel that as learners outside of the institution of school we don’t have to rush putting ourselves into a new box or label.

Or that our learning life (unschooling life) is how we choose to define it. But as a friend recently shared with me (as we had a very interesting conversation about unschooling, control, trust and partnership), that having parameters around a word (or label) can be helpful. And I think that when it comes to unschooling, the waters are becoming muddied.
What Is Unschooling
Let’s start with the definition of Unschooling. John Holt originally coined the termed unschooling. Here’s an excerpt from The Foundations of Unschooling, a Keynote given by Pat Farenga and found on the John Holt GWS website:

“Holt never felt the word “homeschooling” was adequate to describe the learning he was talking about—learning that didn’t need to take place at home nor look like school learning. John knew that many children want to be out in the world, to be in the community and learn the lay of the neighborhood because, like most healthy humans, they are social beings—it is in our nature to be social, curious, and to learn. So John used the word “unschooling” to describe this type of learning—after already trying out the word “deschooling,” coined by John’s friend Ivan Illich, and found to be too harsh by the public. Unschooling didn’t fare any better and John himself, by 1981, was using the word homeschooling interchangeably with unschooling.”

Here are two different explanations or definitions that I think describe it best:

“Before I talk about what I think unschooling is, I must talk about what it isn't. Unschooling isn't a recipe, and therefore it can't be explained in recipe terms. It is impossible to give unschooling directions for people to follow so that it can be tried for a week or so to see if it works. Unschooling isn't a method, it is a way of looking at children and at life. It is based on trust that parents and children will find the paths that work best for them - without depending on educational institutions, publishing companies, or experts to tell them what to do. Earl Stevens (The Natural Child Project)

“Unschooling is when the learner chooses the how, what, where, when and why of their learning”. Judy Arnall
Unschooling Isn't..
Unschooling isn’t another method we can now use to get our kids to meet our hidden expectations under the false pretence of freedom. Unschooling is not another way to do school work or get that school work completed.

Unschooling isn’t a method. But Unschooling can include a class or be school-like, as long as that is what the learner chooses. Sure unschooling can have academic goals, if that is what the learner chooses. But the ultimate goal of unschooling is trust. And trust takes time. And a whole lotta deschooling!
That Deschooling Work
So parents, please do the work. That Deschooling work! This work is important because if you want a change, if your kids want a change, need a change, then you will need to do something different. But first, before we begin to do something different, we need to start thinking differently. We need to shift our perspective. So ask the questions:What does learning really mean to me? What is school? Education? What were my experiences? When did I truly get to learn for learning's sake? How did my educational experiences shape me today? My learning? Were these goals mine? Were they my parents goals? Obligations?

If I let my children choose the how, what, where, when, why of their learning, how will I feel? What if they only choose video games? Why is hours outside or reading a book or writing a story more important to me than hours on a video game (or substitute something else that pushes that uncomfortable button)? You really can’t skip the Deschooling process. Well I guess you can, but why start on this journey to go halfway? And even if you choose not to unschool or even homeschool, or to go from unschooling to Classical homeschooling (I know families that have done that too) - you will NOT be a failure or wrong.

But what you will be is clear on is your reasons WHY. (I always co

This week, we’re going to explore one of the biggest questions or struggles that homeschool parents face, and the one that Leslie gets asked about more than any others as she is counseling, and mentoring homeschool moms. The “Enough” question plagues our minds and makes us question whether we’re doing the right thing and making the right decisions. It shows up in a whole lot of ways, too, so if you’ve ever struggled with any of the enough questions, today’s episode is for you!

Winning the Week by Demir Bentley
I recently finished reading Demir Bentley’s book Winning the Week. I feel newly inspired and also feel validated in the planning process I teach to homeschool moms.

The key to winning your week is simple: It’s planning it. Most homeschoolers know that they should plan their week for success, just as most of the staff and entrepreneurs Demir Bentley is addressing know they should plan. But only a small percentage of us do.

Why is that?
• Don’t have time
• Afraid of the past
• Afraid of the future

But planning the week is a powerful way of decreasing anxiety and improving motivation. Because it has negative affect associated with it, though, we avoid it. Demir advises us to make planning a pleasant experience.
How to Plan a Winning Homeschool Week
Once you have a pleasant experience planned, start with prayer.

Then review your:
• Calendar
• Email
• Mail inbox
• Messages
• Purse
• Task list

Use the weekly planning page from The Organized Homeschool Life Planner.

Choose leveraged task (The One Thing by Gary Keller)

Choose one goal for the week – specify on weekly page

Now plan these must-do tasks for the week. If you have the Organized Homeschool Life planner, you can put them on the daily planning pages. I would suggest listing no more than 3 tasks per day to leave room for tasks that pop up. You can plan in more detail each day.

The other way to plan your weekly tasks is with a calendar or agenda. You can see visually that you will not have time to do math on Friday because you have a co-op meeting and a park day following. You won’t expect things to magically get done. You’ll put math on your day at home.

Schedule your tasks with as much detail as you like – in the morning, afternoon, or evening boxes in the Organized Homeschool Life planner, or at set times in Google calendar or an hourly agenda.

Be sure to leave time for what I call walk-in tasks.

Demir advises us to schedule our goal-related and priority tasks at the beginning of the week. I like keeping Fridays for easy tasks and for catch-up time if needed.

If you’re ready for more advanced weekly planning, you can plan your leisure activities, too. Put a dinner party with friends, a game night,

In this episode, we dive into what gameschooling is all about, why it's good for your school or family, suggestions for when to get started and how!

"What if I'm not good at homeschooling? Will my children be behind? Am I doing enough? Is this messing my children up? I know that I am ruining them."
We love our children and truly want the best for them and wonder if homeschool really is the best for them. Let's take a look at that and compare that thought against 3 tried and true steps to honestly evaluate where you are at with homeschooling.
There is hope! So much of it. And I promise that you'll have the right perspective and to be able to really sift through your doubts and questions from this episode.

Handling Homeschool Fears, Interview with Homeschool Super Freak This week on Homeschoool Highschool Podcast: Handling Homeschool Fears, Interview with Homeschool Super Freak.

Handling Homeschool Fears, Interview with Homeschool Super Freak
We are so excited this week to have a chance to chat with a favorite new friend from social media. Vicki has been enjoying Homeschool Super Freak's posts on Facebook, Homeschool Super Freak website and Parent Busters podcast episodes! So, Vicki contacted her and arranged for today's interview about what to do with fears about homeschooling!

Homeschool Super Freak is Jacqueline Wilson and everyone who knows her knows how unstuffy and fun she is!

Parent Busters podcast is about having fun learning and sharing fun ideas for learning.

Jacqui's daughter started out her education with traditional preschool. However, Jacqui always know that she wanted to homeschool her daughter. Jacqui comes from a healthcare background and was a college adjunct professor. Therefore, she had LOTS of research skills...so she researched, researched, researched form six months before she started homeschooling her preschool daughter. After six months of research, she was ready to start with lesson plans in a fat binder and an official school room. However, on their first official day of homeschooling, after only two hours, Jacqui knew that all her research was not going to work for her unique daughter!

Now, ten years later, she is still homeschooling...without the fat binder. Instead, she and her daughter plan an eclectic mix of online classes and unschooling.
Handling homeschool fears
After a decade of experience, Jacqui has learned some things that will help you increase your confidence that you CAN homeschool high school...in your unique way.
There's not ONE blueprint that fits every family's homeschool high school
Every parent and every teen is different. The beauty of homeschooling is that you can adapt your educational plans to fit your family's unique needs and goals. So enjoy the process and freedom of homeschooling YOUR way!
Check out your state homeschool laws
Every state has different requirements. Some are more restrictive that others. Then start planning around those laws.
Do not worry if you have qualifications to teach
Research has shown that you do not need a teaching degree in order to have a successful homeschool. You only need to care and be committed to the homeschooling process. The cool thing is that you can learn alongside your teens!

Also, as you are homeschooling high schoolers, you really become a resource manager rather than a teacher. They will learn lots in online courses, co-op classes, library activities, podcasts and exploring topics on their own (earning credits by logging hours).
Do not worry about failing
There's no perfect homeschool (also, there's no perfect traditional school). People are imperfect. You will gain more confidence and skills as you go. You can model the resilience of bouncing back after a tough day or bad-fit curriculum. This gives them a growth mindset.
#131 Apologia Live Online Classes with Larry Blythe In this episode I interview Larry Blythe, the director of Apologia's Live Online Classes since 2009. We discuss why this cutting edge technology works so well and why it is very different from the last-minute online format implemented by many schools during the pandemic.
#130 Who Am I? (part 4 of 8) - The Altar Apologia publishes a 4-volume series called the What We Believe series. It's a worldview study endorsed by the late Chuck Colson. The second volume in the series is titled, Who Am I? In that text, several stories are included to illustrate the lessons. This podcast is the FOURTH of an 8-part series where you can listen to the story titled: THE ALTAR.

Episode 162: Before Our Kids Leave… [Podcast] (Player not displaying or working? Click here to listen.)

In our last episode, dealing with family devotionals with teens in the house, we talked about focusing on certain things you want your children to know before they leave the house. This week, we share some of those things–nowhere near all of them–that we would like to focus on in our house. With just 2-3 years before our children are through with high school, what types of things would we most want them to know?

Maybe by building this list, you will be encouraged to build your own list and focus on certain things in the short time you have with your children.

The Battle for our Children’s Identity | 143 Most would agree, we never imagined that identity would be a problem issue for parents and children alike, and yet it has become a massive issue. Between media bombarding us with messaging that’s contrary to God’s plan to insecurities that arise from past experiences, many adults and children alike are struggling with the issue of who and Whose they are. Today’s podcast will be a great help as we not only frame the discussion on identity, but also give you information that will equip you to parent your children better in these crazy times.

Meet the Guest:
Joining us today is Dr. Kathy Koch, who is the founder and President of Celebrate Kids and has quickly become one of the speakers that TTD Families look forward to hearing the most. Dr. Kathy earned a Ph.D. in reading and educational psychology from Purdue University. She was a tenured associate professor of education at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, a teacher of second graders, a middle school coach, and a school board member before becoming a full-time conference and keynote speaker in 1991. She has loved Jesus for years and her faith and desire to serve and glorify God is the foundation of her ministry. Beyond those impressive credentials, though, Dr. Kathy is one of the most gifted speakers we have ever seen, and she has a gift of relating and making her sessions engaging to audiences of all ages. Her love for Jesus and her love for families has led her to write a number of books and speak all across the country to equip families to educate and parent the children God gave them well.

How to be happy as a mom We tend to think of happiness as a mere feeling, something nice but unnecessary, something transient and superficial. However, happiness has always been a topic of deep interest to philosophers, and there is a long Christian tradition of both what happiness truly is and also how important it is.Aristotle, Augustine, Aquinas, Pascal, Lewis – all agree that what people are searching for is happiness. And that is not a sinful search, but a proper one. We were created to live in perfect harmony and happiness with God and man, and we long for what we have lost in the Fall. Thus, only God satisfies the search for happiness, a search we should all make because it does lead us to God

72. Why Sending Your Child to Preschool is Unnecessary and How to Homeschool Preschool Hey, Friend!
Are you feeling the pressure to send your 3 or 4 year old to preschool? But something is nagging in your mind and you aren't sure if you should...or if you have to.
Our culture just marches preschoolers off to school without question. Why is that? Well, there are 3 major reasons behind the decision made by parents.
Let's evaluate these answers and put them next to the response of a homeschool mom, so you can decide if preschool really is necessary for your preschooler.

Listen to Garritt and Yvette Hampton on the Wallbuilders Live! radio show.
Timothy Barton is the President of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization that presents America’s forgotten history and heroes, with an emphasis on our religious, moral, and constitutional heritage. WallBuilders has been recognized from coast-to-coast for its work in education, history, law, and public policy, integrating the elements of Biblical faith and morality throughout all aspects of American life and culture.
Tim is an ordained minister and has worked in a variety of church staff positions, including as youth minister, worship leader, and assistant pastor. He now spends countless hours in WallBuilders’ library of tens of thousands of original documents, researching the truth of America’s founding and exposing the lies regarding our history that currently permeate our society. He consults with numerous state and federal legislators on policy and legislation and speaks to a variety of groups across the nation each year.
Tim’s ability to tell the story of America’s past, while helping audiences understand how that connects to the present and what steps should be taken for the future, has inspired audiences nationwide. Tim has been a guest on numerous national television and radio programs including The Ben Shapiro Show, the Glenn Beck Program, Louder With Crowder, TBN, Andrew Wommack Ministries, Believer’s Voice of Victory, and many others.
Tim graduated from college with a degree in Business Management and a minor in Biblical Studies. During college, he mentored youth, working with local youth groups and serving at an orphanage. He worked for several years as a senior counselor at a large youth camp in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He also served as an athletic director, teacher, and coach at a Christian School in Texas.
Regardless of where he is, Tim speaks into the lives of those around him, encouraging them to live passionately and to follow Christ whole-heartedly.

Davis Carman got started on his homeschool adventure with a providential two-by-four on the side of his head. Twenty-three years and five graduates later, he hopes to share some of the lessons he’s learned along the way to help other families enjoy the most successful, satisfying, and Christ-centered home school possible.
His mission is to help homeschooling families learn, live, and defend the Christian faith. This is accomplished in part through his work as president of Apologia Educational Ministries, the #1 publisher of Creation-based science and Bible/worldview curriculum with more than eighty #1 awards for over twelve years in a row from homeschool organizations and media.
Davis is passionate about his family. He married Rachael in 1986, and God has blessed them with seven children and two grandchildren. So far, five students have graduated from their home school. Of those, three are college graduates (two of whom are married), two are currently in college, and two are still at home. Davis and his family live in Waxhaw, North Carolina, where they enjoy the homeschooling adventure of a lifetime, complete with roller-coaster twists and turns and the occasional lazy river ride.
Davis isn’t a perfect husband or father, but he loves being with his wife throughout the day and immediately available to handle disciplinary and training matters or to experience an extraordinary Deuteronomy 6 moment in the course of an ordinary day.
He has been honored to speak in over thirty states and seven countries as an advocate for home education. Additionally, he served twelve years on the board of North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) and nine years as the North Carolina Ambassador for the Home School Foundation. He is also a founding board member of Homeschool Now USA.
Davis is the author of five illustrated children’s books designed to instill a biblical worldview. Good Morning, God is based on Deuteronomy 6, A Light for My Path is an ABC book based on Psalm 119, In the Beginning is based on the Creation account in Genesis, Psalms to Know Early, is based on…you guessed it…Psalms, and his latest: Truths to Know Early.

I mean, it does feel that way sometimes in the thick of being at home and homeschooling your children. Resources for Learning Spanish, Interview with Karim Morato This week on Homeschool Highschool Podcast: Resources for Learning Spanish, Interview with Karim Morato.

We are joined today by our dear friend, Karim Morato. Karim is a popular Spanish teacher who owns, heads the courses and teaches curriculum at Spanish Educational Solutions and Homeschool Spanish Curriculum. Because she was born in Guatemala and has experience with Latin culture and the richness of her native tongue as well as her education degree in the US, she can give students unique Spanish-learning experiences!

Karim and her husband have been homeschooling their three children. Their oldest has graduated and is in college. Her second child graduated from homeschool high school this year! Fortunately for Karim, she still has one in middle school...so a few more years of homeschoooling high school.

Karim is passionate about helping parents help their kids learn Spanish. She is also passionate about helping young people learn the various Spanish-related cultures. Not only that, but Karim is the Spanish-language co-ordinator and an advisor at HSLDA. She is busy empowering parents for home education!

As Vicki says, one of the best ways to learn a world language is from a world language native speaker!
Homeschooling in the Hispanic community is really growing these days
Karim notes that there have been some Hispanic homeschooling families since the early days. However, there were not enough to provide a sense of Hispanic community within the homeschooling culture. One of the few good things that came out of the pandemic was that leaders within the Hispanic community rose up to help families homeschool well during the lockdowns. Now that there are leaders and community, more families kept homeschooling after schools opened back up.

HSLDA has been part of enabling Hispanic leaders to help their communities. Karim got connected with them in the funniest way. We were all at our beloved 2:1 Conference several years ago. Karim was scheduled, along with a group of blogging friends, to go to lunch with us from 7Sisters. However, she got stuck in a conversation with a representative from Homeschool Legal Defense Association and missed the ride. However, that connection gave HSLDA a "know-someone" who is respected in the Hispanic community. One thing led to another and she became the HSLDA outreach coordinator for the Hispanic homeschool community.

This is such a good example of the power of connection. People connection is a way that communities grow and stay healthy!

Recently Karim was part of HSLDA's first official Spanish homeschool conference in April 2022. There were two hundred fifty families attending! Since then, Karim has been involved with some online workshops and conferences as well. There are so many Spanish resources for homeschooling now!

Now other homeschool organizations such as Home Education Association of Virginia have added a Spanish track to their annual conference.

As Vicki points out that God made all of us to be brothers and sisters in the Lord. He also made each of us unique. Therefore, to be Hispanic in the homeschool community is a unique situation. It is so exciting to see how God is opening doors for the unity and diversity within his homeschooling community! We can love each other as the children of God in all the different ways!
How can you connect with our diverse homeschool community? (and teach your children these skills)
Connecting a loving and diverse community is as simple as:

* saying "Hi" at a group function
* sitting with different people at gatherings...

He consults with numerous state and federal legislators on policy and legislation and speaks to a variety of groups across the nation each year.

Back To School Tips Back To School Tips by Homeschool Veteran, Felice Gerwitz ~ Episode 474
It is that time, and with the coming of the school calendar, it is time for some really great back-to-school tips by our podcast network founder, Felice Gerwitz. She homeschooled for thirty-one years and in that time learned what worked and what did not work. In this episode, she drills down to the basics that will help your homeschool journey.

Visit my website at MediaAngels.com for curriculum, novels and so much more for your homeschool needs.

Are we excited or dreading the new school year? Yes, it is okay to be nervous but please let me assure you that you will not ruin your children. If you have a heart for spending time with your children and you can openly communicate your needs to them and they can talk honestly to you, all will be fine.

Whenever I've listened to a podcast or a talk on the topic of homeschooling I walked away feeling that I would never be able to "do that" or be "that creative," or accomplish anywhere near the amazing mom speaking. One time I went to a homeschool conference and listened to a mom who talked about teaching American History and then proceeded to parade her children out on the stage in matching period costumes. My mom was an amazing seamstress and I can not sew. Can you imagine how I felt after I left that talk? Years later, when I joined the homeschool speaking circuit and spoke at conferences I met this lady and got to know her well. She is not a super mom but she loves to sew. For her, this was a fun project and for me, it would have been overwhelming. She had her children help with the sewing and taught them more than one thing at a time.

Saying this brings me to one of the most important points I hope you learn today. Work within your abilities and your wheelhouse. What are some talents that you bring to the table? Are you good at art? Is music your thing? Are you a sports advocate? Do you like history, math, or science? What is it that you enjoy doing or teaching? Taking this into consideration what can you easily implement into your homeschool? For the mom who loved sewing, it was teaching her kids to sew and make historical costumes.
Back to School Tips - Do. Not. Do.

* Duplicate the public/private school in the home.
* Set yourself up for failure by overplanning.
* Teach over your child's attention span.
* Talk too much. Lecture only.
* Not allow your children to participate in discussions.
* Failure to ask enough questions.
* Unsupervised learning, no checks, and balances.
* Failing to schedule time off.
* Lack of field trips.
* No extracurricular activities.

Look over this list and add to it - and the reverse is as follows:
Back to School Tips:

* Use textbooks, but as a starting point and/or a supplement. Map out the chapters to complete during the school year and count in time off.
* Set a realistic schedule within the timeframe of the school year including the time that school starts and ends.
* Teach younger children in bite-sized portions, for example, teach math with manipulatives and spend the time necessary to master skills rather than sporadically cover them.
* Keep lectures at a minimum. Answer questions and go from there.
* Allow your children to participate in discussions.
* Be sure to ask questions, if they can not answer them give them time to research.
* Be sure the children are getting assignments completed by checking the work or having them check each other's work with supervision. If your kids know you are not going to check math assignments or writing projects they may...
