The OnlySchoolers Podcast: Helping You Homeschool What happens when two homeschool moms, each with an only child, meet at the local ice-skating rink and strike up a friendship? We’re about to find out…We’re Christyn Edwards and Gina Prosch, and we created the OnlySchoolers Podcast and community to share the wisdom and hard-learned lessons of our years homeschooling only children. Our kids spend hours at our local rink each week, and while they skate, we wait…and talk. Our conversation topics range widely, but we always come back to homeschooling. Each of us quickly realized that “onlyschoolers” (our word for home-educating families with just one child) are a small percentage of the homeschool population and while there are plenty of resources for large families, those ideas don’t necessarily translate to the reality of the day-in and day-out of educating just one child. So to paraphrase Mahatma Gandhi, we are being the change we want to see in the world: a resource for onlyschoolers. But our ideas aren’t just for onlyschoolers. HOMESCHOOLING IN THE LAST FRONTIER The last frontier, no it's not space but it may feel as vast, is the state of Alaska! With wide open spaces, it can sometimes feel even lonelier when homeschooling. But homeschooling is truly what you make it and in keeping with the premise of Homeschool Your Way today’s podcast covers homeschooling, community, and of course a helpful hack or two. Join Janna and her guest Carol Simpson, an IDEA representative, as they discuss homeschooling options in Alaska and ways to make homeschooling, if not easy, may be easier for you.
ABOUT OUR GUEST | Carol Simpson has been an Alaska resident for over 40 years. She is a veteran homeschool mom and a Field Rep/Administrative Assistant for IDEA since 1997.

Janna  00:02 First of all my own experience, Alaska, it feels like a foreign country to most of us who are down here in the lower 48.

Janna  08:47 I think a lot of families would be surprised to know that programs like yours exist all over the United States, just like your initial reaction of I don't want to get involved with the public school system. If I'm choosing to homeschool, they have. I mean, obviously, there are really good programs like yours.

Carol  21:14 Here's what you missed out on by not enjoying the reading aloud to your kids. What I did, so I had seven kids, you know, so you know what that means. That means my house was a mess all the time.

Carol  25:49 Right? Well, I think mostly, I don't really think there are challenges that are unique to Alaska from a homeschooling perspective.

Carol  33:58 Right? That would be my strongest advice for any homeschooler really, to find community, create community, and do whatever you have to do to have some community.

Janna  36:2 Yes, never stop learning. I think that as homeschool parents, we can demonstrate to our children, again, that we are learning alongside them, that although we are the authority in their life, that doesn't mean we know everything, and that we are willing to learn the things that we don't know.

Focus on You Too Homeschool Mom | Teresa Wiedrick, Capturing the Charmed Life | The Strike a Balance Podcast for Working Homeschool Moms, SE2 E71 About the Episode
On today's episode of the Strike a Balance Podcast for Working Homeschool Moms, I talk to Teresa Wiedrick from
www.capturingthecharmedlife.com Teresa helps homeschool moms shed what’s not working so they can show up in their homeschools (& lives) authentically, purposefully, and confidently.
Teresa has been a homeschool mama to four kids (now aged 14-21). Her writing forays turned into life coaching to serve the homeschool community.
She offers virtual retreats, and group & personal coaching on deschooling, self-compassion, boundary building, and reimagining our homeschool lives. Teresa hosts a podcast and creates a community for homeschool moms who want to show up on purpose in their life.
I thoroughly enjoyed talking to Teresa because she shares so much wisdom about the importance of working on ourselves as working homeschool moms. My biggest takeaway is that homeschooling doesn't last forever, so we need to not only be giving to every other aspect of our lives all the time. We need to take the time we have with our kids to make memories but also to develop, learn and grow.

The Discipleship Gift of a Journaling Bible | 200 Today Leslie is going to share with you in a little more detail about a project that she started years ago by journaling in a Bible for each of her children. She’ll be discussing the whys and the hows of what she deems to be the most impactful discipleship project she has ever undertaken. This is an incredibly practical episode that you don’t want to miss.
If you’ve never been to a Teach Them Diligently event, this would be a great one to start with. Once  you’re there, you’ll find that you'll get access to world-class speakers, practical workshops, and a huge exhibit hall filled with the latest homeschooling curriculum and resources. Plus, you'll have the opportunity to connect with like-minded families and recharge your homeschooling batteries.
BUT, what really sets Teach Them Diligently apart is the mission. What you’ll find when you join us in Pigeon Forge is a homeschool conference that is focused on strengthening families, refocusing us all on our mission as parents and home educators, and preparing us to accomplish that mission with excellence. It has a distinctly Christian focus, and those who attend tell us that they came away with not only great information and encouragement, but also with relationships with others that will help sustain and support them all year long. We spend a lot of time talking about parenting, marriage, and other relationships as well as covering the nuts and bolts of homeschooling, because we know that home education is only a small part of your family life, though it impacts much of it.  We would love to see you there!  Learn more and get your ticket now at TTD Events.

Homeschool Co-Op Security And Safety | 201 This week's topic is an important one as we'll be looking at homeschool co-op security and safety.  While we all wish this was a topic that didn't require serious consideration, in the day and age we live in we must have a solid plan to protect our kiddos when they're Co-op, church, etcetera.
Leslie is joined by Michael Mann today. Michael is a Marine Corps and law enforcement veteran currently serving as an expert in physical protection for both the corporate sector and faith-based organizations he has some incredible insights to offer us all.
This is an episode that we hope you'll share with your Co-op and tutorial leaders to make sure they have this information as well.
Michael will be joining us at Teach Them Diligently Pigeon Forge, TN May 4-6, 2023 where he’ll be speaking on security issues. Make your plans to join us there. Get more details here.
You’ve probably heard Leslie refer to “Heart Schooling or Heart Schoolers” quite a bit on the show already, but we wanted to make sure you understood where it came from. Leslie wrote Heart School to help parents like you get more clarity about what God has CALLED you to do and then to see how you can find a lot of peace for your own heart and your family by allowing the vision God’s given you to guide your day-to-day decisions.
The clarity Heart School will provide will help you remove friction in your relationships, it’ll give you confidence that you’re doing what is best– and that you can do it well, bring clarity, peace, and structure to your days, and guide your everyday decisions with your vision in mind. I sincerely believe that EVERY Homeschool family, whether you’re just starting out or whether you’ve been homeschooling for a long time, will benefit from Heart School. The class is digital, so you can watch it at your own pace, and many couples have benefitted from walking through it together. It contains several worksheets designed to make you think about and come up with strategies about things you may not have considered before. Go to Teach Them Diligently.net/heartschool to learn more and enroll today.

369 | The Best Advice I Can Give to the Struggling Parent (Sean Allen) We meet hundreds of parents every year at homeschool conventions across the country. We are often approached and asked what advice or counsel we might give regarding difficulties many of these parents may be facing with their children. Sometimes we feel like we have a very clear answer to give, but more often than not, the best advice we can offer them is also, perhaps, the most obvious. In this episode I'll discuss what this bit of advice is and, despite it being hidden in plain sight, why it is ultimately superior to any counsel I may be able to offer. If you find that your homeschool just seems to be dragging along, let this episode serve as a call to stop and take a day (or a week!) to address the environmental factors that may be keeping you from creating the homeschool you’ve always wanted. About Sean Sean Allen is the founder of The Well Ordered Homeschool, husband to his beautiful bride Caroline and a proud father of eight. S7E156: How Do You Know If Online Learning Is The Right Option? How Do You Know If Online Learning Is The Right Option?
Technology has become a powerful tool in learning, transforming education in numerous ways. It has increased access to education, information and resources. Learning opportunities are now, quite literally, right at our finger tips.
Technology has not only increased our access to information, but it has also broadened our access to where and how we want to learn and who we choose to learn with.
One format that has grown is online learning. It seems like at if we are looking for a class, or school, most likely we can find an online class that will teach it. But with all of this choice now on offer, how can we know if we are choosing right? How do you know if online learning is the right option?
Invited 2 experienced educators in the online learning space to explore this question with me.
Anjilee Ferguson and Sara Busalacchi have over a decade of experience in online learning, working in the field since its inception.  They have a passion for helping students succeed which led them to co-found Mountain Point Academy, an online school for grades 6-12.  Their mission is to help provide students with a personalized approach to online learning, with 1:1 support for students to find joy in learning and citizenship.
In This Episode
Anjilee and Sara take the time to answer my questions about online learning.

How do you know if online learning is the right learning option?
How do you find out of the online learning option aligns with your needs and values?
What options are available?
How can we best support our kids in their online learning experience?
What are points to look for when choosing an online learning community?
Can online learning be relationship based?
What is the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning?

Just kiddin’. We’ve polled moms and dads who are thinking about homeschooling and asked them what concerns them most. We didn’t prompt or suggest their comments, and you just might find yourself relating to what they have to say.

When told they fear burnout, kids who turn out wacky, and their own academic shortcomings, we responded with honesty and transparency with some good old-fashioned humor and self-deprecation mixed in. This is the stuff of real life!

Marcia (01:22): Sure. So I, like you, probably like many people, never in a million years thought I would homeschool. It just never crossed my mind. I grew up in public schools, and I enjoyed and had a positive experience, I obviously worked in a public school for many years, so I just didn't think it was even on my radar.

Janna (03:34): So you bring a very unique perspective to the homeschool community. What is the service that you now offer homeschool families?

Janna (05:31): I would say from personal experience with those standardized tests in our family, there are times when we are like, "Oh look, they're three grades above grade level in a certain area."

Marcia (08:39): Absolutely, absolutely. I know for our state, we have requirements that certain subjects be taught, but there's no rule beyond that or law beyond the, "Hey, you need to have a history in your program," but there's nothing that says what that means.

Janna (12:45):: Well, especially in homeschooling, because we do have the opportunity to allow our children to be more interest led.

Janna (21:30): And I'm a firm believer that a third party is always helpful in those situations because we are so blinded to the things, I hate to say it, but the things that we do well.

Marcia (28:24): Well, I think my biggest suggestion in just working with as many families as I have, and I work with a lot of new families as well who are starting off whole schooling, is to take things one year at a time.

(32:13): And so to encourage parents for sure, just breathe. That's my biggest thing. Goodness. We just all need to breathe. Especially if this is your first year,

Janna 00:03 Today's episode is long-awaited, we are on the verge of releasing not one, but two high school levels here at BookShark. Today I am joined by Amy Ratliff, she is BookShark’s curriculum designer.

Amy  04:19 Yes, we have World History, World Literature, U.S. History, and U.S. Literature, all for a high school level. We've been working on this for quite some time.

Amy  06:27 Yeah, so the overall goal for the scope and sequence of BookShark is to hit the main social studies topics three times throughout your journey, Kindergarten through High School. So you're going to touch on different, like different culture studies three times throughout your entire BookShark career

Janna  16:50 It's important to be able to make those connections because otherwise, we can villainize and not to, not to say shouldn't or should, but we can villainize characters, people throughout history, through our lens, and not having the context and their perspective of what's going on.

Janna  24:09 And if you want to see what is available, our website will be updated as this podcast comes out. So make sure to go to www.bookshark.com. And you can look at the different history levels that we have. You want to specifically look for World History High School and U.S. High School.

Amy  35:05 Similarly to our other language arts programs, in addition to reading the fantastic literature we give you all year, we give you a series of creative expressions, which is just what we call our different writing assignments.

Amy  40:17 Thanks for having me, Janna, and yeah, if you guys liked this program, please email us because I want to share the excitement with you.

Here an excerpt from my homeschooling chat with Tiffany:
"While I agree with the necessity of preparing our homes to house the "operations" if you will of educating our children, the most important thing we can prepare is our own hearts, in daily communion with the Lord through prayer and time in the scriptures. This enables us to face the challenges of parenting and teaching our children while bearing with them in their immaturity, and ours, while we are growing up into Christ.
With that perspective of truth, what that helps us to do is that when we are squeezed– If we're putting scripture in, we're meditating on His word then when we're squeezed, it's the word that's going to come out. Now I'm not saying that we're going to do it perfectly and that's when we repent.

In light of that, here are some other practical things. Pray not only for your children but with your children. Find simple ways to incorporate worship and devotion of some sort into your school day. Time together with Christ at the center is really transformational in our days. Even if it doesn't seem like it right at the beginning, even if the body language of children, they're sulky and they're grumpy, do it anyway. Do it anyway.

Prepare as much as you can the day before. Gather all the necessary supplies for each day, your lesson planner or your books, and corral them into one spot, whether that's a basket of bookshelf, these fancy rolling carts that they have now, put everything together. It is a challenge to be– You think you're ready to start and then you don't have this, and you don't have that. You're up and back and forth from wherever you're doing your lessons, and then you've lost your children's attention. I don't know about anybody else but that can be trying to herd cats after you've had your moment of going back and forth trying to find the things that you need.

Also, remember your why. Why are we doing this? I have found that remembering why I'm doing this, has helped to serve as an anchor for when I felt like I couldn't do it anymore. That why then serves as the baseline for what we do each day, what we do each week, what we're giving our time to.

Last thing, super practical, just write your lessons in pencil or erasable ink so that you can make changes. Cross things out, circle something you didn't get to today and move it to the next day or move it to next week, and carefully consider your season.

You're talking about littles and having a lot of littles and those little years, they're physically taxing. We have to lean into the fact that not every opportunity is an opportunity for now. The right thing at the wrong time quickly turns into the wrong thing."

The Great Commission Begins At Home | 196 We talk a lot about the Great Commission and the Gospel here at Teach Them Diligently, and we even go so far as to say things like, “Your home is your Jerusalem” and “The Great Commission Begins At Home.” Today, David and Leslie are going to work those ideas out a little bit for you and give you some very practical ways to incorporate these principles into your daily life. We pray that God uses this mightily in homes all around the world.
Before we dive in, we wanted to tell you about some wonderful discipleship resources, that open doors for powerful gospel conversations. We all know that reading aloud is a great way to build relationships and make memories as a family, but when you choose excellent literature with a Biblical theme running through it, you’ll find the impact of that time to be even greater, so I wanted to tell you about our friends at Lamplighter Ministries.

Rubric for Growth | 198 Is it possible to gauge how our children are growing in their faith? Could there possibly be a “rubric” that we could look to to encourage us as parents and to give us ways to encourage our children in their own walk with God as well? Today, David and Leslie are going to follow up on something that was mentioned in passing in last week’s episode about the Great Commission Beginning At Home, and that’s the idea of a “rubric” for spiritual growth in our children—or a few new biblical benchmarks that we can look at to see how our children are growing.

ABOUT THIS WEEK’S GUEST:
Kate Battistelli is living proof God will use anyone if they’re willing. She’s the author of the bestseller, The God Dare: Will You Choose to Believe the Impossible and Growing Great Kids: Partner with God to Cultivate His Purpose in Your Child’s Life. Kate experienced infertility, miscarriage, an abortion at age 18, and four failed adoption attempts which all wreaked havoc on her life. She had a life-changing experience as a young actress in New York City, going from understudy to starring as Anna in the Broadway National Tour of The King and I opposite Yul Brynner for more than 1,000 performances. Kate and her husband laid down their careers, and the Broadway theatre in answer to their first “God dare” and moved out of New York City and into a life of homeschooling and home business. As their daughter grew and began expressing her gifts in music and songwriting, they learned there was a bigger purpose in leaving their careers than they had imagined. Inspiring Online History and Civics Courses, Interview with Nichelle Nelson This week on Homeschool Highschool Podcast: Inspiring Online History and Civics Courses, Interview with Nichelle Nelson.

Inspiring Online History and Civics Courses, Interview with Nichelle Nelson
The past can be an incredibly inspiring source of knowledge and learning. For many, history and civics classes in school were where we first learned about the world around us and our place in it. But what happens when you have the opportunity to learn more?

Nichelle Nelson from Warp and Weft History is here to show us how online history and civics courses can bring greater depth and understanding of these topics. Get a unique look at Nichelle's personal journey with online courses as she talks about her experience, tips for success, and more!

Enjoy this inspiring interview with Nichelle Nelson and we discuss ways of inspiring online history and civics courses in your homeschool!
About Nichelle Nelson
Nichelle started homeschooling back in 1993. Did she know she was always going to homeschool? No, she didn’t. In fact, it didn’t ever enter her mind the possibility of homeschooling until one day in prayer.

After Nichelle and her husband got married, they immediately moved to the Azos, which is a small island off the coast of mainland Portugal.
At the time, her and her husband had extensive conversations about family life for when they had kids.
They often discussed how they wanted to raise their family and how they wanted the culture of their family to be. By the time their firstborn daughter was born in 1989, they had established Nichelle to be a stay-at-home mom.

This in itself was weird for Nichelle because her mother and her mother-in-law were both pretty much pioneers as far as women of color in their professional fields. They were always the first woman of color to do this, the first woman of color to do that.

And so the idea of her being a stay-at-home mom was a bit out of her comfort zone. But because they are people of prayer, they felt strongly to pursue this direction in life.

One day, Nichelle was praying for Adrian, their firstborn, and she remembers this really strong feeling that Adrian was to never enter the public school system. This caught Nichelle off guard, once again, because she knew that this meant at some point in time they were going to hit a big windfall and need to school her  and her future siblings.

When Adrian was about 8 months old, they moved from Azos to Germany. It was during their time in church one day when homeschooling came up again.

Her husband introduced her to a family in the church that taught their own children at home. But Nichelle wasn’t impressed at the time because she had absolutely no dream, no fantasy and no thought process in her mind to ever teach her own children.

Then later on, she met another family who homeschooled.
And the very first thing that impressed her about this family was how well the siblings got along together. For the older one to pick up the younger one to make sure she was eating and comfort her, she was awestruck.

That was the first draw to homeschooling for her, the idea of familial closeness. It really touched her heart.

Then, on another day, she was standing in the same hallway in church, enjoying a deep intellectual conversation with someone as she was looking away at something. At one point, she turned around, and she saw the person she was talking to was a 12 year old young man. He happened to be a homeschooler of a Latino family.

And it was the mother of that Latino family who became her gateway to the homeschool community. She loaned her all of her teaching home magazines, and inspired Nichelle further about homeschooling her own children.

Even if you're a naturally messy person, you can learn to love cleaning! Free how-to-make-a-cleaning-plan guide: https://simplyconvivial.com/cleanWhen I was a young mom and homemaker, I read blogs and books on keeping house better. I didn’t love housework, but I did want to do a good job. I wanted to be a good housewife, a good homemaker.I would try to do the cleaning routines promoted by bloggers. I copied lists and plans from magazines. I asked friends who had clean houses how they did it.But having a clean house just seemed like one of those things that was not going to happen for me. I would go in fits and spurts, but no routines or consistent level of cleanliness ever stuck. The only thing I was master of was the boom and bust cycle: Go on a cleaning frenzy, make a ton of progress all in a day, collapse exhausted from the effort, and wake up sad the next day that the work all had to be done again. What I know now, nearly twenty years later, is that I was missing two things: 1) an unconscious preference for neatness and 2) an understanding of the nature of cleaning.Women are the backbone of society, so we must be free from cultural lies & personal guilt and have the freedom of good habits and self-control so we can build God-honoring families and communities.? Homeschool Secret Weapon Homeschool Secret Weapon ~ Episode 491
The homeschool secret weapon is not the perfect curriculum, perfectly run home, or peaceful household. Join veteran homeschooling mom Felice Gerwitz as she shares her homeschool experience with you.

So…it's time to dig deep, and I need your full attention. Sure, homeschool moms are great multi-taskers. You may be driving, folding clothes, or perhaps even painting a wall with your kids. (I've received emails telling me the favorite activities of my listeners.) But, seriously, I need your attention today because the information I am sharing with you will take some convincing.

It is not that my information is incorrect or that it is flawed in some way; the issue at hand is that humility may get in the way.

I'm not trying to be vague if you have listened to any of my past 490 podcasts a ridiculous number, I know, and I'm still at it; I normally get right to the point.
The Real Secret Weapon
The truth is the secret weapon is you, mom, or dad. Not to put pressure on you more than you possibly put on yourself, but the simple fact is you are it! You are the head of your home, classroom, discipline, and organization in your family, the head honcho, or whatever title you give yourself. Who gives the final word on what happens in your child's education? You. In regard to your child's physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being in the palm of your hand. Literally.

How did I come to this conclusion? Carefully. Over the years, I placed blame on various sources, entities, and even my own shoulders for what I considered academic or character struggles my children went through in their life. The curriculum was easy – if my child didn't "get" Algebra using one book, no worries – we purchased another. Character struggles were the result of a young age (they are too young to get it), too little knowledge (we haven't covered that yet) or lack of information (we are working on that). But at some point, I had to stop and say, "I can't blame their teacher because I am their teacher."

Instead of that statement being a burden, I embraced it. I realized that I could not address the issue without acknowledging my shortcomings. If my child was misbehaving, I had many options, but I had to do something to correct that behavior, or I'd see it again and again. I'd turn into the nagging, repeating parent.
Word on the Street
At every convention I attended, I found the next best thing. Yet, upon implementation, I found that this next-best thing was not what I was looking for, whether it was a book, workbook, video, game, or even a book on scheduling and organization. I discovered that I needed to be "all in" in order to embrace what we were learning and be there to support my child in the process. As homeschoolers, we tend to want to set it and forget it. Give your child a book and walk away and then become frustrated when they walk away from the table and never come back, lose their book, or fail to complete an assignment. This all happened in the course of my 32 years of homeschooling.

My discovery came from many discussions with my husband, homeschool friends, and children. First, my husband shared information he learned from listening to a homeschooled dad of a large family,
SS #121: Barefoot in the Kitchen with the Ideal Type (featuring David Hicks!!!) Today's very special guest is David Hicks. Does the famed author of one of the bestest books EVER, Norms and Nobility, really need any further introduction? Well, what you may not know about him is that he spent thirty years of his life in private education, serving as head of school for a number of schools across the country, and culminating as Chief Academic Officer for Meritas LLC, which owned and operated private college prep schools around the globe. David and his brother Scot did an excellent translation of Marcus Aurelius called The Emperor’s Handbook and are currently working together again on translating a series of Lives from Plutarch. David and his wife have four grown children and live off the grid on a ranch in the beautiful state of Montana. Today’s episode is sort of a dream come true for Mystie and Brandy as they have read and discussed David’s book, Norms and Nobility, off and on since they were in their 20s. David was SUCH a joy to talk to and you going to be so blessed by this conversation. *** Have you joined the Scholé Sistership yet? In January, we kicked off our annual 5×5 Reading Challenge. Hey, homeschoolers! I” id=”9Wtoq5EN8Bd” vid=”9Wtoq5EN8Bd” id-for-player=”9Wtoq5EN8Bd” link=”/listen/how-to-teach-grammar-in-high-school-9Wtoq5EN8Bd/” is-authorized=”false” custom-styles=”margin: 0 24px 24px 0;”>
How To Teach Grammar In High School Do you have a high school student who struggles with grammar? Or do you have a soon-to-be high school student and no idea how to approach grammar at this stage? This is the Homeschool Sanity Show, the episode where I share a sane approach to teaching grammar in high school.

Hey, homeschoolers! If you've struggled to help your high schooler use correct grammar in writing or if the thought of teaching it in the high school years gives you the heebie geebies, I have good news.

The high school years are the perfect time to learn grammar.

First, high school students have the abstract reasoning ability required to truly understand and implement grammar. As I've explained to parents of elementary students many times, these younger students simply aren't developmentally prepared to master the abstraction of grammar. It's similar to the abstract reasoning ability required to master algebra. Sure, some students develop this reasoning ability earlier, but most don't. Up until this point in their development, they were working hard to decode and pronounce words and determine the meaning of words given the context of the sentence. Asking them to determine the role of the word in a sentence as well is extra challenging.

That's why I made Grammar Galaxy a fun, confidence-building introduction to grammar and other language arts in the elementary years. I didn't want them avoiding grammar once the were developmentally ready to use it in their writing.

The second reason high school is the perfect time to learn grammar is because they have begun to care about it. When students are in classes with other students and sharing in speech or writing, they will want to avoid the embarrassment of poor grammar. I capitalized on this peer pressure with my own kids with great results. In the English classes I taught, students read their writing aloud and passed it to a friend to read aloud. This performance pressure rapidly improved my students' grammar and spelling. High school students also begin to use messaging and email and do not want to have poor grammar and spelling for their friends to see. Some of them will be interested in learning grammar for the first time as a result.

Finally, high school is a great time to teach grammar because these students can learn independently. With the developmental ability and new motivation, students can use grammar curriculum to learn more quickly than they could have in elementary school. With instruction, they will learn to make better use of automatic editors like Grammarly. Like all writers, they will still require another human editor–whether that's you, an outside instructor, or a friend with good grammar. I have found high school students learn from this editing feedback very quickly.

I hope I've convinced you that your teen isn't behind or incapable of growing as a writer if they still need to master grammar.

But now the question becomes how to teach it.

The first step is to encourage your student to continue reading for pleasure. Studies indicate that high school students tend to spend more time with friends than reading as much as they did in their earlier years. They also tend to use reading time for study instead of leisure. But reading for enjoyment is the key to developing your student's vocabulary, grammar, and writing. Invest time helping your student find enjoyable books and making time to read them in their schedule.

The next step in teaching high school grammar is to reinforce the purpose of it. Reluctant students want to know why they should care. <a href="https://www.google.com/search?

How to Plan Language Arts for Homeschool High School: Special Replay This week on Homeschool Highschool Podcast: How to Plan Language Arts for Homeschool High School, a Special Replay.

How to Plan Language Arts for Homeschool High School
English/Language Arts credits are a huge part of the high school process. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out what to cover and when. Join Sabrina and Kym for some helpful guidelines for covering ELA in homeschool high school!

First off: remember, there's not ONE right way to homeschool high school! So remember, these are guidelines. You know what your unique teens need.

How can you know what to plan for when organizing your materials for your teens' homeschool high school English/Language Arts credits.

* Reading (Literature)
* Writing
* Grammar
* Vocabulary
* Public Speaking

Reading
There's not one right way to choose books for homeschool high school. For students with learning disabilities or career-bound teens they may need more practical reading and/or audiobooks. Think at least one book per month with a literature study guide (follow guidelines for ability level usage in each 7SistersHomeschool.com's Literature Study Guides). Then fill out the list with Bible reading, magazines, poetry, etc that interests them. Discuss this with you supervisory advisor for exactly what can be counted.

For students who are college bound, you will want to invest in more reading and probably more literature analysis (in the form of study guides). That's the cool thing about homeschooling high school: you do what is best for your teens!

If you would like an in-depth look at how many books each teen should cover in each year of high school, here is a comprehensive look at how many books by level and by grade. (Remember, these are guidelines, not rules.)
Writing
Writing is as important as reading. Everyone needs to be able to write efficiently. Here are some very basic guidelines.

* 1 research paper (think about over the 4 years of high school: 1 APA paper, 1 MLA paper, 1 Chicago paper and repeat one of them for the 4th year). Lengths of the paper vary by ability, interest and grade.
* 4 5-paragraph essays
* 4 other kind of writing (business, poetry, short story, etc)
* Check 7Sisters' writing guides for no-busywork, user-friendly, success-oriented writing curriculum!

Of course, if your teen has special needs or other challenges because life happens, adjust this to make it work for your family.

And if your teen is college bound or wants rigorous writing, check out this post on how many papers teens should write (by level and year).
Grammar
Grammar is necessary for homeschool high school. However, teens who have a practical mastery of grammar rules may find that editing their papers is enough grammar (proof that they understand grammar usage). If your teen is good with simply editing, it might be helpful to have a simple checklist of grammar rules to refer to. We suggest <a rel="NOFOLLOW" href="https://www.7sistershomeschool.
HOW ONE FAMILY MAKES HOMESCHOOLING WORK Homeschooling can start in a variety of ways for each family. Sometimes it’s brought on by location, a need for flexibility, circumstances beyond our control, and in the best of times a personal choice because it is what suits you and your child the most. On today's podcast, Janna is joined by Mama (Christal) and Cash. Their homeschool journey has been one of choice and discovery with Christal sharing the loops and turns of homeschooling on social media as they navigate what works and what doesn’t work for them. What started as a way to stay connected has turned into a way to share their journey in an effort to help and support others.

TIMESTAMPS
Christal (00:34): So I'm actually a homeschooler out of Madison, Alabama, and I chose to pretty much document my journey with Cash from a very young age.
Janna (01:29): So Christal, when you were looking at furthering Cash's education as he became school-age, what drew you to homeschool?
Christal (01:40): So we are a different kind of homeschooling family. You have some homeschoolers that will pull out because they're displeased with their school districts. You have some that were homeschooled themselves and decided to continue the tradition with their kids. Cash attended about six, or seven months of pre-K, but the problem we ran into is that he was a gifted learner.
Janna (08:21): I agree that community is one of the biggest parts of homeschool success. And for people who are coming into it and may not be familiar with a community outside their kids' friends. It's almost, in homeschool, it's kind of reverse.
Christal (20:15): It really can. The fear that's there can be easily eliminated with a little bit of self-education. The rigorous get up at whatever hour of the morning, get breakfast, get dressed, and get on a bus. If you do a little bit of de-schooling before you kind of start homeschooling, that takes care of a lot of that. We get up when we feel like it.

134. Are You An Introvert or Extrovert Homeschool Mom? Why It Matters and How It Affects Your Homeschooling Hey, Friend!
Would you call yourself an introvert or extrovert? And how about your children?
Figuring out our natural inclinations can help us in our homeschool mom relationships. When we learn to work with each other through the day in and day out of school lessons, chores, and activities, our motherhood journey can have more peace.
However, we have to be careful not to plant our feet in the ground and allow a label to dictate our life. The good news is that I have some insight that will help you find freedom and offer solutions to the difference between you and your children.
Let's dabble a little into the psychology and how this affects our ability to homeschool our children well.
