Xiphoid Xiphoid is an adjective that means sword-shaped.
Our word of the day comes almost directly from the Greek word for ‘sword.’ It was imported into English in the mid 18th century. Here’s an example of xiphoid in use:
The xiphoid guitar in the picture was my idea, not my wife’s. In fact, Marie threatened to leave me if I ever left the house with that thing.
Lyceum Lyceum is a noun that refers to a literary institution.
Our word of the day comes directly from the Greek word for a temple for gods. More recently, it refers to any institution or teaching place.
If you ask me, this town could really use a lyceum. As of right now, it has seventeen bars, but no public libraries.
Mulct Mulct is a verb that means to cheat or defraud.
The Latin word mulcta (MOOLK tah) refers to ‘a fine.’ Our word of the day may refer to the act of extracting money from someone by fine or it may mean extracting money from someone through fraud.
I felt the health inspector was trying to mulct me with that fine. It just didn’t make sense that having too many fire extinguishers could be considered a fire hazard.
Omnium gatherum Omnium gatherum is a noun that refers to a collection of miscellaneous people or things.
Our word of the day comes directly from Latin. From Latin, it takes omnium, which means ‘of all,’ and from Old English it takes gather, a word that was later brought into English with the same meaning it currently has.
The meeting was an omnium gatherum of people from all professions. I spotted lawyers, janitors and teachers, all sharing the details of their lives.

S. 7 Ep. 141 Appalachia is Overflowing with guests Bobi Conn and Kendra Winchester This week is a hybrid episode as we slowly creep back into a recording schedule after a nice long summer break. We’ve got Appalachia and Eastern Kentucky on our minds because of the recent catastrophic flooding in parts of the state so we decided that we’d rebroadcast part of an earlier episode with Kendra Winchester, founder of Read Appalachia on Instagram, who champions Appalachian writers on her feed.
But we also had the opportunity to speak this week with Bobi Conn, an Appalachian author and friend of the show who we interviewed in June of 2020 about her debut memoir In the Shadow of the Valley, a raw and unflinching look at growing up in Eastern Kentucky and her dysfunctional family. Bobi has a new novel coming out at the end of August call A Woman In Time that incorporates more family stories she heard about her great grandpa, a moonshiner, and her great grandmother, who held the family together.
Did you know that helping flood victims can be as easy as buying a book? This Saturday, August 6, Carmichaels Bookstore in Louisville KY will donate all profits from book sales from all 3 stores and their website to Eastern Kentucky flood relief funds organized by Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky and the Hindman Settlement School. Their website is www.carmichaelsbookstore.com.
We will be back next week with the true start of Season 7 and an all new episode. Happy Reading!
You can find Bobi Conn on social media @BobiConn and her website www.bobiconn.com.
You can find Kendra Winchester @readappalachia and @Kdwinchester

S. 7 Ep. 142 - One-On-One Reading Rendevous with Guest Cassie Moses 8-10-22 This week we speak with Cassie Moses, a mom from a small town in Central Kentucky. Cassie grew up in Eastern Kentucky at the Hindman Settlement School where her father was the administrator and where she met and befriended lots of Kentucky artists through the Appalachian Writers Workshop.
Cassie began a book club several years ago with her three daughters, and it has offered a way for her to read books that they’ve selected and have special one-on-one time with each of them to discuss these books while doing something special, like going out for ice cream or lunch. We also spend a few minutes speaking with her oldest child, Riley, who shares some of the great books she’s read with her mom.

《今週のポッドキャスト・フレーズ》
That strikes me as odd: 「あれって変な感じがする」という意味。

The Only Planet Mnemonic You Need Memorizing the planets is one of the coolest things you can do.
But finding the best planet mnemonic can be tricky.
That’s because what makes sense to one person doesn’t make sense to another.
That’s why I’m going to share an alternative to acronyms and acrostic mnemonics on this page.
And you’ll probably find the hermetic mnemonic for planets especially useful.
It’s definitely my favorite and works fast!
The Simple and Effective Planet Mnemonic
Let’s get one thing clear:
Simple doesn’t necessarily mean easy.
But when you use an effective planet mnemonic, you reach efficiency.
And that means you can add details about each planet to your memory with ease.
For this learning goal, I recommend using a Memory Palace. Even if you use an acrostic, this approach is so much more powerful.
To get started, pick any room. Then assign a spot for each of the planets you want to memorize.
Let’s say you’re going for a comprehensive solar system mnemonic that includes:

Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
Ceres
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
Pluto
Haumea
Makemake
Eris

This means you need 13 stations in your Memory Palace.

As you can see in the illustration above, it’s easy to assign stations in any room for this amount of information.
Next, you simply place a mnemonic image that helps you remember the name of each planet in order.
For example, on station one, you can place something that reminds you of Mercury. That could be the god Mercury or a car, like the Mercury Grand Marquis. Or you could combine them in an unusual way to help you remember that you mentally placed Mercury in that part of the room.

You then simply repeat the process, using simple pegword associations throughout the room you chose.
The Hermetic Memory Palace For the Classic Solar System
Recently, I wanted to memorize the solar system as it was used in the Italic Hermetic Tradition. </span

Feles Psssss psssss... Over here Purple People! It’s your weekly dose of the English language where Susie and Gyles let the cat out the bag about all those word myths you’ve always wondered about!

And speaking about cats, today’s episode will be all about our feline friends.

Gyles and Susie’s cats have been regular guests on the podcast so today, Susie will uncover the link between cats in bags and pigs in a poke, how an affection for the name ‘Margeret’ gave us our moggy cat and why being greedy led to skinning cats (but not literally thankfully)!

Gyles turns film critic and shares his opinion on the 2019 musical film based on T.S.Eliot’s poems, Cats, and we also get to discuss another classic British film when we explore why we find it difficult to herd cats.

The inevitable digressions include Chris Hemsworth, football T-shirts and which TV series is the best of all time (no prizes for guessing my choice!).

Learn English With A Useful Time Saving Idiom Ep 563 An easy to follow English lesson about an idiom used when you invest a little of your time, to you save far more. Time is a precious commodity. It’s the one thing we can’t get more of, unless you live in a sci-fi movie. We’re all busy. We all want to save time. And that’s what this idiom is about saving time by spending it wisely. I explain it all with the help of an interesting cautionary tale.

Today’s idiom is one I used after a minor disaster in my garden. In this lesson we talk about English idioms, how native English speakers would use these idioms in everyday English. As always, there are lots of examples and an interesting story to help you remember the idiom and any unusual vocabulary.
The English language has lots of idioms that offer wisdom on how you invest your time or money. For example, “penny wise and pound foolish,” which means that you’re being cheap when it comes to saving money, but that’s costing you more in the long run. If you spend a little time now to save lots later, then that’s not being penny wise and pound foolish

A ship full of grain from Ukraine to dock in Ireland.
Long lán arbhair ón Úcráin le bualadh chun poirt in Éirinn.
The Turkish Government has indicated that three ships with grain cargo have left ports in Ukraine under the custody of the United Nations and that one of them is due to dock in Ireland.
Tá sé tugtha le fios ag Rialtas na Tuirce go bhfuil trí long a bhfuil lucht arbhair orthu tar éis calafoirt san Úcráin a fhágáil faoi choimirice na Náisiún Aontaithe agus go bhfuil ceann acu le bualadh chun poirt in Éirinn.
Turkey is an occasional peacemaker between Russia and Ukraine since it is a neighboring country that has a voice in the conflict between them.
Tá an Tuirc ina ceann réitigh ócáideach idir an Rúis agus an Úcráin ós tír chomharsanachta leo í a bhfuil guthaíocht aici ar an gcoimhlint eatarthu.
Last week, diplomats from Turkey and the United Nations managed to persuade the Governments of both Russia and Ukraine to reach an agreement on sending grain across the lake.
An tseachtain seo caite, d’éirigh le taidhleoirí na Tuirce agus na Náisiún Aontaithe áitiú ar Rialtais na Rúise agus na hÚcráine araon teacht ar chomhaontú faoi ghrán a sheoladh thar loch amach.
There was a point, of course, since Russia and Ukraine produce a third of the world’s wheat.
Bhí téirim leis, ar ndóigh, ós iad an Rúis agus an Úcráin a tháirgeann an tríú cuid de chruithneacht an domhain.
There was concern – and there is still concern – that there would be a famine in poor countries, which are already in dire straits, due to cargoes of grain being locked up in a dock in the south of Ukraine.
Bhíothas imníoch – agus táthar imníoch i gcónaí – go mbeadh gorta i dtíortha bochta, atá i ngéarchall cheana féin, de bharr lastaí arbhair a bheith faoi iamh duga i ndeisceart na hÚcráine.
When the iron is red it should be struck and apparently the Ukrainians were not the most negligent.
Nuair atá an t-iarann dearg is cóir a bhualadh agus níor leis na hÚcránaigh ab fhaillí, de réir cosúlachta.
In light of what was decided about corn matters, permission to export other raw materials – such as iron ore – is now being demanded.
I bhfianaise ar socraíodh faoi chúrsaí arbhair, cead bunábhar eile a onnmhairiú – leithéidí amhiarainn – atá siad a éileamh anois.
It is not known, however, when their petition will come in, if it does.
Ní fios, áfach, cén uair a thiocfas a n- achainí isteach, má thagann.
As with the war in Ukraine, the Russian Army is reportedly pushing the town of Avdiivka north of the city of Donetsk in the east of the country, as well as other important settlements in the region.
Mar leis an gcogaíocht san Úcráin de, tuairiscítear go bhfuil Arm na Rúise ag brú ar bhaile Avdiivka ó thuaidh ó chathair Donetsk in oirthear na tíre, chomh maith le lonnaíochtaí tábhachtacha eile sa réigiún.
It seems that the Ukrainians’ quatrains in the places where they are not in a position to fight the enemy’s encroachment.
Dealraítear gur geall le ceithearnaigh na hÚcránaigh sna háiteanna nach bhfuil siad in araíocht dul i ngleic le hanfhorlann an namhad.
This approach of the Ukrainian Army in some areas has been criticized, however, by the human rights organization Amnesty International.
Tá cur chuige seo Arm na Úcráine i ndúichí áirithe cáinte, áfach, ag an eagraíocht chearta daonnna Amnesty International.
Amnesty claims that civilians are being put at risk by soldiers settling among the population in a residential area.
Maíonn Amnesty go bhfuil sibhialtaigh á gcur i nguais de bharr saighdiúirí a bheith ag cur fúthu i measc an phobail i gceantar chónaithe.
That claim made the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky blush and he accused Amnesty that the organization was trying to take the bait from the house of the evildoers and send it to the door of the victim.
Chuir an maíomh sin Uachtarán na hÚcráine Volodymyr Zelensky le báiní agus chuir sé i leith Amnes

The FBI raided the Trump estate in Florida.
Ruathar déanta ag an FBI ar eastát Trump in Florida.
The former President of the United States Donald Trump has revealed that agents from the FBI raided his estate in Florida last night, that they searched the place and took with them some documents that were locked in his locker.
Tá sé tugtha le fios ag iar-Uachtarán na Stát Aontaithe Donald Trump go ndearna gníomhairí ón FBI ruathar ar a eastát in Florida aréir, gur chuardaigh siad an áit agus gur thug siad leo roinnt cáipéisí a bhí faoi ghlas i dtaisceadán aige.
The story appears to be related to an ongoing investigation by the FBI about documents that Donald Trump brought with him from the White House in Washington to the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach after he lost the Presidential election in 2020.
Is cosúil go mbaineann an scéal le fiosrúchán atá ar bun ag an FBI faoi cháipéisí a thug Donad Trump leis ón Teach Bán i Washington go dtí eastát Mar- a-Lago in Palm Beach tar éis dó an toghchán Uachtaránachta a chailleadh in 2020.
The United States Department of Justice and the FBI themselves are refusing to say anything about the matter.
Tá Roinn Dlí agus Cirt na na Stát Aontaithe agus an FBI féin ag diúltú aon ní a rá faoin scéal.
FBI director Christopher Wray, a man appointed by Donald Trump in 2017, is believed to have authorized the raid along with Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Is é Christopher Wray stiúrthóir an FBI, fear ar cheap Donald Trump sa phost é in 2017, agus glactar leis gur thug seisean agus an tArd-Aighne Merrick Garland cead an ruathar a dhéanamh.
A spokesman from the White House only said that President Joe Biden did not know that there was to be a raid on Donald Trump’s estate.
Ní dúirt urlabhraí ón Teach Bán ach nach raibh a fhios ag an Uachtarán Joe Biden go rabhthas le ruathar a dhéanamh ar eastát Donald Trump.
Eric Trump, one of the former president’s sons, confirmed that FBI agents brought documents with them and claimed that his father had been working with the National Archives in Washington about them for several months.
Dheimhnigh Eric Trump, duine de chlann mhac an iar-Uachtaráin, gur thug gníomhairí an FBI cáipéisí leo agus mhaígh sé go raibh a athair ag obair i gcomhar leis an gCartlann Náisiúnta i Washington ina dtaobh le roinnt míonna.
Eric Trump’s wife, Lara Trump, claimed that her father-in-law brought with him from the White House only newspaper clippings and photographs, small mementos of his term of office that he was entitled to keep, as she said.
Mhaígh bean chéile Eric Trump, Lara Trump, nár thug athair a céile leis ón Teach Bán ach gearrthóga ó nuachtáin agus grianghraif, cuimhneacháin bheaga ar a théarma oifige a raibh sé i dteideal iad a choinneáil, mar a dúirt sí.
The National Archives announced in February that Donald Trump had handed over fifteen boxes full of documents to officials and that some of these documents were highly confidential.
D’fhógair an Chartlann Náisiúnta i mí Feabhra go raibh cúig bhosca dhéag lán cáipéisí tugtha ar láimh ag Donald Trump d’oifigigh agus go raibh cuid de na cáipéisí sin thar a bheith rúnda.
By law, Donald Trump should have handed over the documents to the National Archives when his term of office ended a year earlier.
De réir an dlí, ba cheart na cáipéisí a bheith tugtha ar láimh ag Donald Trump don Chartlann Náisiúnta nuair a tháinig deireadh lena théarma oifige bliain roimhe sin.
Several inquiries are underway by various agencies about Donald Trump’s affairs, both his political business and his private business.
Tá roinnt fiosrúchán ar bun ag gníomhaireachtaí éagsúla faoi ghnóthaí Donald Trump, idir a ghnó polaitiúil agus a ghnó príobháideach.
