How To Be Free | Kashmir Shaivism What is the ultimate goal of spiritual life? I’m going to propose that it’s freedom, however we choose to articulate it. But what is that exactly? And does freedom mean the categorical end of all suffering and the attainment of the supreme bliss? What’s so blissful about freedom?   Today we’re going to articulate the Kashmir Shaivism position on freedom and contrast it against the freedom of other systems like Samkhya and Advaita Vedanta to show that ultimate freedom requires ultimate agency and absolute infinitude, i.e non duality. Remember, not all freedoms are the same. Different schools of spiritual philosophy offer different versions of freedom. As such, I hope to have a nuanced conversation regarding the goal of the various paths. Let's compare the concept of freedom of Cārvāka with that of Sāmkhya, Advaita Vedānta and finally, Kashmir Shaivism. Lectures happen live on zoom every Monday at 7pm PST and Friday at 6pm PST.  There's Q&A right after the lecture. It is free and open to the public. All are welcome!Use this link and I will see you there:https://www.zoom.us/j/7028380815For more videos, guided meditations and instruction and for access to our lecture library, visit me at:https://www.patreon.com/yogawithnishTo get in on the discussion and access various spiritual materials, join our Discord here: https://discord.gg/U8zKP8yMrMSupport the show
How To Overcome Cravings Sooner or later, in spiritual life, we find that there are certain habits, patterns and attachments that are getting in the way either because they prevent us from practicing as much (or as well) as we'd like or because, for whatever reason, they are obstructing the natural joy and peace that should radiate from the depths of your being.   Naturally, then, we become interested in "renouncing" these things! And these things might take various forms: TV, substances, workaholism, sensual indulgences etc. So how do we do it? How do we wean off of these things in a way that is effortless, easeful and natural and not in a way that in violent and repressive? Can we learn to renounce in a way that is mental fortifying and not mentally debilitating?  This a follow up conversation to our discussion last week on "Is Religion Just Sexual Repression?" which you can watch here:https://www.patreon.com/posts/is-religion-just-81268681?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=postshare_creator&utm_content=join_linkThis is one lecture in a wider lecture series on the Bhakti Sutra of Narada. 61. A Meditation for Physical Pain To all my visualizers out there, this meditation is for you!
You may have heard the "bright white light" teachers often allude to in class – and for good reason! Visualizing a white light and directing it to different parts of your body is nourishing, uplifting, and rather healing. In this meditation, we will grow this white light at the base of the skull, which is the location where the medulla oblongata resides, the bottom most part of the brain. This is where your brain and spinal cord connect, and is the key conduit for nerve signals to and from your body. It's this part of the brain that helps control your heart beat, breathing, and blood pressure – so all the signals responsible for telling your body to be at ease. I sometimes visualize this white light healing the parts of my body that feel stiff and hold tension.
If you're not one to use visualization in your healing journey, why not give this a go! You may be surprised.

Is Religion Just Sexual Repression? This lecture is an exciting one: we’re going to discuss sex and more specifically sexual repression! To what extent are all spiritual experiences just hallucinations caused by repression, narcissism and grandiosity as the Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysts suggest? As spiritual practitioners we must take these kinds of critiques seriously and really engage thoughtfully with them since they can show us the deepest aspects of spirituality as it relates to very complex human psyche! We're discussing 10 different Western scholars, including Freud and Lacan to consider 4 arguments from the materialist for why all religion is repressed sexuality, drawing from Swami Tyagīshananda's commentary on the Bhakti Sutra. Then we are going to offer levels and levels of analysis in response to all for arguments making the case for the existence of a distinctly "religious" instinct common to all life and manifest to a greater degree in certain "genius" type individuals. Then, I'm going to try to use some Freudian reductionist language to say to the materialist: all instincts reduce to the sex instinct but the sex instinct must itself ultimately reduce to, what I'll call, the Urge to Transcendence. This is one lecture in a wider lecture series on the Bhakti Sutra of Narada. 114: Outdated cues and how to unlearn them The word 'outdated' refers to things that are old-fashioned.
Usually, old-fashioned is a word that describes something that is ancient, antique, obsolete, or out of date. Stuff that’s made in a different age; from materials we no longer use; things that aren’t anymore produced, or because we’ve found faster, more innovative ways. Just as production and consumption make advances, so do we people and so does language.
In the past you may have heard or learned certain cues. They made a lot of sense and you may have even started using them in your own classes. By now, you’ve heard them so often that you don’t even question the words anymore. However, due to social advances, research and revision, some of the cues you may use today are no longer accepted. Instead this type of outdated language is considered
• ineffective
• inaccurate
• non-inclusive
• offensive
With this episode, I want to help you understand why some cues are no longer safe to use and how you can recognise similar phrases to make your cueing language up-to-date and appropriate.

3 Part Breath A guided breathing practice to help train the body to use the full capacity of the lungs to breathe. By focusing the breath into the belly, diaphragm, and chest, we can begin to breathe deeper. If you are a mouth breather, this is a great technique to help transition into a nose breather. I Feel Disconnected from Nature When… Time spent in nature reminds us of who we are, but let’s be honest: we all go through periods where getting outside feels like a drag. In today’s episode, we are going to flip the script and contemplate the times we are indoors, staring at screens, and disconnected from nature. Maybe the answer for you lies in stress, in an inability to set boundaries, or in an old trauma. Once you can define it, it’ll help you come back home. Tune in to begin. That theory talked about atoms, sub-atomic particles and their combinations. But did those Indians have nuclear missiles too? #154: Life Through the Lens of the Bhagavad Gita with Swami Chidanadana Yogic philosophy shows us that we’re born with imprints that affect the way we think and behave throughout our entire life–that is, of course, until we break free. In conversation with Swami Chidanadana, we explore what it means to awaken to our samskaras, the tumultuous journey it ensues, and the guiding light of the Bhagavad Gita. Because why wouldn’t we want to free ourselves from suffering? The negative shades of our personality so often hinder our path to peace so the chance to let go should be embraced with open arms. Right?  Perhaps not. In this episode, we learn that while it’s true that we want to change, so often we’re afraid to let go. Because letting go means leaving a part of us behind. So how do we find enlightenment then? Are we even in control of the process no matter how much we long for it? Some say the Gita holds the answers.  Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. Use code: PODCAST. 112: What's a well-rounded sequence Many teachers in our community complain that their Yoga Teacher Training didn’t prepare them enough to write sequences or that they didn’t receive enough practice time to learn to write them. And, I know how much your ability to write high quality sequences would boosts your confidence.
Themed sequences that feel logical and intuitive.
Sequences that…

you can use again and again, without feeling repetitive.
are well-rounded and offer great development of strength, flexibility, sthira and sukha.
inspire your students to continue their spiritual journey.
provide your students with enough to learn.

Or simply put, sequences your students love to practice, and you love to teach.
Sequencing is a skill and just as learning vocabulary, it requires practice. On the English for Yoga Teachers Course, I’ve dedicated an entire module to learn, develop, and practice your sequencing skills. It’s one of my favourite modules, because this is where I see most of our teachers make massive progress in their confidence building and owning their authentic expression as a yoga teacher.
But what really is sequencing?
What does a sequence consist of?
And what is a well-rounded sequence?
In this episode, I’ll give you answers to all those questions!

113: 3 words you can no longer use teaching yoga in English Every day, I get messages from people to ask me about ‘how to choose the right words' for teaching yoga in English.
Learning a foreign language takes time and from time to time it can be confusing.
To make a language your own and feel confident teaching/speaking in it, there’s a lot to think of, remember, and study. Especially in the beginning, I can only imagine how overwhelming it is trying to learn everything at once.
In this episode, I won’t explain all the words you need to know. Instead I want to help you ‘unlearn’ 3 words you no longer want to use teaching yoga in English. I'll explain a little bit about the difference between English grammar and yogic language and I’ve got a little task for you to think about words and phrases that you can use instead.

Shaiva Non-Duality = Non-Judgement, Service, Power In this lecture, we do a lot of philosophical work to show, at least for the sake of theoretical understanding, that everything you see in this world is nothing but Consciousness. From this, we come away with three insights:1. To judge, criticize or resent anyone is to judge, criticize and resent God.2. To serve and help anyone is really an act of worship to God. 3. You yourself are God so you have infinite strength and potential to do anything, including overcoming #1 and doing #2 above! Of course, this is the central teaching of the Ramakrishna movement: "shiva jnane, jiva seva": knowing that everyone is Shiva, serve them as an act of worship. In this lecture, we explore the metaphysical foundation for such a teaching in light of the insights of Paramadvaya Vada, or Kashmir Shaivism. Here is an abstract of what was discussed:What is Consciousness? None other than your very own Being, your own essence. Consciousness is You! And also, because of its Transcendent nature and its innate Freedom, Consciousness is God. Wait a minute! Doesn't that mean…you are God? Yes! Absolutely, yes! But of course here in Advaita Vedanta, or Classical Non-Duality the God that you are is the Impersonal God, Brahman without Attributes. What about the Personal God who creates, maintains and destroys? Non-Dual Shaivism, in its radically reconciliatory attitude shows that the Impersonal God is also the Personal God and such, Consciousness/You is/are also, like the Personal God, performing all the divine acts of God: creation, maintenance, destruction, self-revelation/grace, self-concealment/judgement. You can never be parted from God because you ARE God, in both the passive and dynamic aspects! But then why don't I have any control over what happens to me? Ah, because God is Consciousness and Consciousness is distinct.  from and prior to the mind which is where our preferences live! Naturally, then, the preferences of our mind and our inability to exercise personal will to meet them is not a rebuttal against our essential nature as Consciousness, God, who wills sometimes independently of the mind in a spirit of play! Support the show

111: 7 tricks to optimise learning English for yoga Everyone’s learning process is different. Learning processes differ depending on for example:
• the type of thing you want to learn
• your experience with the topic so far
• the methodologies and learning techniques you’ve been taught to use in the past
Some sign up for courses to work towards a specific outcome in a container, finding support in sharing their journey with their classmates. Others go for coaching or mentoring to receive 1:1 or personalised support. And again others like a more independent approach and try to figure it all out by themselves.
Whatever your learning strategy looks like, it can be that you:
• Don’t know really know where to start or how to continue
• Feel overwhelmed with all the different resources, materials and courses available and don’t know which is right for you
• Get stuck because you focus on things you don’t actually need by using old-fashioned learning methods that don’t (longer) work for you
• Feel alone, because you don’t have anymore to share your progress with
As an avid learner of anything to do with yoga and foreign languages, I’ve explored many different learning strategies. Some worked, some didn’t, and years back I thought it’d be the same for everyone.
However, teaching English as a foreign language has taught me that the opposite is true. Everyone has a different way of absorbing and processing information, so I’m aware that there’s no one-size-fits-all.
I love exploring this topic and it’s my passion to help you optimise your learning journey. So, having helped hundreds of yoga teachers and English learners navigate their journey I realised that there’s one thing that truly works for all: personalising your learning journey!
In this training I’ll take you through the 7 ways to optimise learning English for yoga!

110: 3 language mistakes multilingual yoga teachers make Learning a foreign language comes with unique challenges.
Depending on your mother tongue, some languages may be easier to learn than others. But, even when the roots or origins of two languages are the same, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and cultural aspects are different.
Most of the time, the purpose of general language classes is to help you pass exams. This is unfortunate when you want to learn a language for teaching yoga. The language aspects we use in a yogic setting are very specific and very sensitive. General language classes usually don’t provide you with the knowledge and skill practice you need to teach yoga in a foreign language.
So, yoga teachers that have never studied language for yoga classes often make mistakes that can
• cause physical and emotional harm
• damage your student-teacher relationships
• cause a lot of confusion

In today’s training I want to discuss with you three of the most common language mistakes I see teachers in our community make. My aim is to help you analyse your language use and find out what you can improve it to
• make yourself understood better
• guide your students with more compassion
• strengthen your student-teacher relationships
