Vision, Passion & Action With Tony Doherty Part I Vision without passion is just a fantasy.
Vision & passion without action is just an illusion.
But when you combine vision, passion & action in pursuit of your most ambitious goals, you can change the world.
And Tony Doherty has proven it.
Affectionately known as the Godfather of Bodybuilding in Australia, Tony has arguably achieved more in the fitness business than anybody else in the country.
From Doherty’s Gyms, to the Doherty’s Gym Brand, to the IFBB Pro League Australia, to the Arnold Sports Festival, and everything in between, Tony’s resume is astonishing.
But it hasn’t all been sunshine & rainbows along the way.
In this episode, Joseph Mencel sits down with Tony Doherty to chat about his 40 year journey in the fitness business.
From the necessary elements to turn a vision into reality when you start from the bottom, to exerting extraordinary patience in the process, to the preparation & discipline necessary to achieve high levels of success, Joseph & Tony take a deep dive into the valuable lessons Tony has learned through his life experience.
They then change direction and discuss how to keep going when you get knocked down, before addressing the 3 most common dream killers that most of us will experience during our lives, while providing advice on how to maintain perspective through the darkest of days.
Joseph & Tony then close out the episode with a conversation about what the future of bodybuilding and fitness expos in Australia looks like.
An episode so jam packed with practical & strategic advice, we had to break it up into 2 parts!
You’ll want to listen to this one more than once, and share it with everyone you know who is interested in the business of fitness.
Enjoy!

Feel Better, Ride Faster – Sarah Broadhead I think it’s fair to say that a lot of us would like to perform better on the bike. However, how many of us have looked at how our mental health links with our performance? Well this week I’m joined by Sarah Broadhead, who has written a book on the subject. Sarah is an experienced sports psychologist who has worked with olympic athletes as well as supporting Matt Walker, Ella Conolly, Greg Williamson and Hattie Harnden. We chat about how good mental health can support performance. How can we use this to improve our ability to get into a flow state? How do our relationships impact on our riding and what can we do to improve them? There’s heaps to learn here and apply to your own riding. So sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Sarah Broadhead.

Magura

The Magura MT7 Pro is my go-to brake for a number of reasons. The power is incredible and very usable, it's easy to look after and you can customise it perfectly to you. I use the HC-Wide Reach levers which were designed for World Champion, Loic Bruni. If the MT7 Pro is good enough for Loic, then it's definitely good enough for me. You can check them out at magura.com.

Cotic

Cotic founder, Cy Turner, makes dream bikes. The RocketMAX was his dream bike for riding in his new home of the Peak District.

The RocketMAX also fitted my dream and I've been lucky enough to be riding one since 2020. The steel frame helps the bike breathe with the terrain. At speed, the longshot geometry comes into its own, bringing a stability that allows you to really go for it. The RocketMAX also has a fun personality that means that you don't have to be going at warp speed to have a good time.

Cotic will let you choose one of their builds or specify your own dream build parts list. You can collect the bike at their brand new showroom in Chesterfield,

Behind the Mirror Lens – with Scott Barrow Behind the Mirror Lens – with Scott Barrow

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by Rapha

Have you ever wondered about what goes into the team behind the team, and what sort of support goes into helping professional athletes to get the best out of themselves? I have spoken to plenty of interesting people on the pod over the years that have helped to build the behind-the-scenes picture, mostly in the realm of physical support – osteos, soigneurs, and team directors.

They are all super crucial roles in the sport, but something that is often a bit underrated in cycling and in professional sport, is what goes into trying to train the psychological and not just the physical aspect.

Sometimes, people can write athletes off too early in their careers as being physically past their prime, when they are actually just facing mental demons, or are blocked in some way, and when they can overcome this, they have a lot more to give.

That is why I was keen to catch up with my friend, professional coach, and mentor Scott Barrow, to chat about how he gets behind the lens, find out what makes people tick, and get a glimpse into the psyche of the people he helps – and he helps people from all walks of life to get the best out of themselves and reach their potential.

I was at a crossroads in my own career when I first met Scott. He reached out to me when I was on the verge of leaving GreenEDGE, where I had been performing the role of domestique within the team for quite a few years. I knew that the impending change was going to require a lot from me mentally, to go from being a worker to needing to ride for myself and get results.

Our paths crossed at just the right time, and by working with Scott, I was able to realign my career, and I went on to have another four years in the pro peloton, with EF Pro Cycling, where I was able to write a whole new chapter in my pro career to finish it off.

We had a great chat, covering topics like how pressure affects performance, how he helped me to realign things in my own career, and how he handles taking on the pressure of others, without becoming burdened.

I hope you enjoy the listen!

Cheers,

Mitch

I recently took you on a journey through the absolute torture that was taking part in the beast that is Cape Epic. In case you missed it, it’s an hors categorie mountain biking event, across the challenging terrain of South Africa’s western cape, and it really pushed me to my limit.

I thought while I was there, I might as well get out the microphone and turn it on my friend and Cape Epic partner Ian Boswell, and give him the Talking Luft! treatment.

We had a nice little chat, spanning Bos’ early interactions with Lance Armstrong, his thoughts on achieving luft, hypothetical musings on whether it’s better to ride with or sans helmet, and whether he finds it important to keep shaving the legs post-retirement.
We did a bit of a deep dive on kit selection; how to select your kit post-pro career, which of the former pro kits and bikes are worth keeping, and if you had become world champion during your career, how would you wear your rainbow kit?

We took a look into Bos’ current Strava status (hint- it’s solid), favourite riders from the cycling history books, what his dream loop is, and his favourite pro race – which threw up a few surprises, and of course we delved into some of the trials and tribulations that we overcame at Cape Epic.

We had a bit of fun chatting in this episode, and I hope you enjoy listening along!

Cheers,

Mitch

134. James Folsom – Life Sentence This week on the podcast, I'm speaking with James Folsom, ultra-endurance cyclist, and bikepacker. I've been wanting to connect with James for some time now. I had the pleasure or riding with him during the 2021 AR700. We sat and enjoyed some snacks at a gas station in Coleman, before rolling on to find a place to sleep in some random field. We didn't have a lot of time to chat to get to know one another, so here we are.Once we got into the conversation, I was fascinated with James' life story and how he worked his way up from homelessness to becoming a Telecommunications Analyst. Later, his path changed again to better align with his desire to make a career out of life behind bars.James currently holds the 24 World Time Trial Fixed Gear record having traveled 416mi (665.6km) in 22h 21min. We chat about training, nutrition, and a time in his life when he faced adversity in the form of a cancer diagnosis.I really appreciated the way James faced all of the challenges in his life and hope you are inspired by this as much as I am.========Save 15% at Redshift Sports when you use the code MB40Save 50% off your first month of coaching at Cycling 101 when you use the code MB40 at checkout.Save 25% at Dynamic Cyclist when you use the promo code MB40 at checkout.Visit Rollingdale CycleThanks to Ottalaus Inc. for their support. Thanks to Spandex Panda for their support. Thanks to Lakeside Bikes in Invermere for supporting me!

Sifu Rafael starts off by explaining that martial arts can be beneficial for people of all ages, but as we get older, our bodies start to change, and we need to adjust our training accordingly. Martial arts can help with flexibility, balance, and overall health. He notes that many people over 40 have sedentary jobs and may not get enough exercise, which can lead to health problems such as obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Martial arts can help address these issues and improve overall health and well-being.

Sifu Rafael also talks about how martial arts can improve mental health. As we age, we may start to feel a sense of stagnation or lack of purpose. Martial arts can provide a sense of accomplishment and challenge, which can be fulfilling and help combat feelings of depression and anxiety.

We also discuss the practical benefits of martial arts for older adults, such as self-defense skills. Sifu Gomez notes that older adults may be more vulnerable to attacks, and knowing self-defense can provide a sense of security and confidence.

Unlocking the Secrets to Mitochondrial Health

Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell, responsible for producing energy and driving cellular metabolism. As we age, our mitochondrial function declines, leading to a variety of health problems. But fear not, because in this episode, we'll be exploring the best ways to increase the number of mitochondria someone over the age of 40 can get.

So, how can we increase the number of mitochondria in our cells? One way is through exercise. Studies have shown that exercise can increase the number of mitochondria in our muscles, which in turn improves overall mitochondrial function. In particular, high-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been shown to be particularly effective at increasing mitochondrial biogenesis.

Another way to increase mitochondrial function is through dietary changes. Certain nutrients, such as CoQ10, carnitine, and alpha-lipoic acid, have been shown to support mitochondrial function. Additionally, reducing the intake of processed foods and increasing consumption of nutrient-dense whole foods can also support mitochondrial health.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, mitochondrial health is crucial for overall health and wellness, and there are many ways to support and improve mitochondrial function. By
incorporating exercise, dietary changes, supplements, and therapies, it is possible to increase the number of mitochondria in our cells and support overall mitochondrial function.

Boosting Mitochondrial Health: The Benefits of Bone Broth for Digestive Health

Segment 1: Mitochondrial Health
Mitochondria are the powerhouses of our cells, responsible for producing the energy our bodies need to function properly. When our mitochondria are functioning optimally, we have more energy, better mental clarity, and improved overall health. However, factors such as poor diet, stress, and environmental toxins can all take a toll on our mitochondria, leading to a decline in function and a range of health issues.

Segment 2: The Role of Bone Broth
Bone broth has been touted for its numerous health benefits, including its ability to support healthy digestion and boost immunity. But did you know that bone broth can also support healthy mitochondria in the digestive tract? The collagen and amino acids in bone broth are essential building blocks for healthy mitochondria, helping to repair damaged cells and improve function.

Segment 3: Where To Get Bone Broth
My favorite broth is from a company called Kettle&Fire. You can find it at most grocery outlets and more specifically, Sprouts.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, taking care of our mitochondrial health is crucial for overall health and wellness. By incorporating bone broth into our diets, we can support healthy mitochondria in the digestive tract and enjoy the numerous health benefits that come with it.

Rain, hail, cold and mud make a race into a choice or go or stop  – Ep. #138 In this episode, Don and Joe give a recap of the Gorges 100k hosted in Cascade Locks, OR.  The boys share their story of what it was like being cold, wet, and uncomfortable in a race where getting to the finish line was maybe not as important as being safe and sufficient.  The day brought all elements of what trail racing is about and there are some fun stories of what it is like running in the mud up and down hills and across streams and trees.
Tapering and why it matters and all things prep – Ep. #139 In this episode, Don and Joe dive into the topic of pre-race tapering.  They discuss the overall concept, why it matters, how to go about it, and many related tapering concepts.  The episode gives a good inside view of what we do matters, and life and training are all about the total process from end to end and not just one dimension.

The One Thing More Important For Quitting Porn Addiction Than Anything Else (He Is Hero Podcast Ep 65) Heal your brain from porn in 30 days with my Free Porn Detox Course: https://romanmironov.com/free     I know how bad you feel after watching p**n. It makes you feel weak, depressed, lonely, and worthless.     Most people try to cure it by playing video games or watching TV but it just makes you more bored and leads to watching more porn.     Wake up❗STOP the vicious cycle now.     Take my Free Porn Detox Course to heal from porn and feel motivated for success now.   ►►► GET THE COURSE NOW: https://romanmironov.com/free   To really quit porn addiction, ask yourself these two questions: The first question is “What kind of technique can I use to quit my porn addiction ❔” I get asked this question often because people understandably want a quick solution. Some even want a magic cure ? When I was quitting porn, using techniques helped me a lot. I used a replacement habit and punishment.  With that, I was able to go to 30 clean days. And I felt so motivated and energized that I made a promise to myself: no more PMO. I felt alive and wanted to feel like this all the time. But that was a surface level change. The pain that drove me to PMO was still there. It was loneliness and depression because I didn’t like my life. That’s where the second question came in. And it’s way more important for quitting porn addiction. I asked myself, “How do I get my life together now so that I will never go back to porn ❔” I was doing porn and masturbation because I didn’t like who I became. I am a guy who wants always to do the right thing. But my life was terrible at the moment. I used PMO as a coping mechanism. And then I hated myself even more because that was another bad choice. So I started getting my life together in the hope I will stop betraying my identity.  I learned social skills and got a girlfriend. I got in better shape because I hit the gym hard. I hired more employees for my business so that it could work without me. I started spending more time with my little son and loving it. I mustered the courage to move from Russia to Canada at the age of 36. That was an identity-level change. I started to love my life. And porn addiction became irrelevant. ———————————————- COMPANION BLOG POST https://romanmironov.com/how-to-quit-masturbation/ ———————————————- OTHER VIDEOS YOU MIGHT LIKE: ?How Long Does It Take for a Brain to Heal from Pornography: https://youtu.be/z2oepsyvE-s ?No PMO Depression after Week One (And Easy-to-Use Tools for Coping with It): https://youtu.be/H-mLIQXRbpQ ?How Long to Rewire Brain from Porn Addiction: https://youtu.be/yT1ECk8ZQIw https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdA0oZPOSZLFLOj7VoVfwspnc6iIoj0z2 ———————————————- ABOUT PORN DETOX COACH ROMAN MIRONOV I help people reclaim their life and actualize their potential by going porn-free. He developed his method over 20 years treating thousands of patients resolving their pain and returning them to full functional capacity. He has stopped thousands from getting unnecessary surgeries and resolved the pain of thousands of others who had surgery that did nothing to alter their pain. The key to the Yass Method is the use of the symptoms that the body presents along with simple practical tests which allow the correct tissue that is creating the pain or other symptom to be identified. This is completely different from the existing medical model of depending onn diagnostic tests to identify the cause of pain which find structural abnormalities that can be found in almost the same percentages in those with absolutely no pain as well as an inability to identify most muscular causes. His desire is create worldwide acceptance of his method as the primary model for diagnosing and treating pain. https://livewithoutpains.com/   ———————————————- I am Porn Detox Coach Roman Mironov. Should I Count Days on No PMO ❔(He Is Hero Podcast Ep 63) Heal your brain from porn in 30 days with my Free Porn Detox Course: https://romanmironov.com/free     I know how bad you feel after watching p**n. ►►► GET THE COURSE NOW: https://romanmironov.com/free     Should I count days on NoFap?     Some say, “Don't count days on NoFap.” Meanwhile, others say counting days helps. What do you make of it ❓     Back in 2014, I started with small steps in my NoFap transformation. I started with one day as my first NoFap goal.     It gave me a measurable target to focus on, reducing my anxiety. I also had something to look forward to, even though that something was a relapse.     When I hit my target, I also felt proud immediately. I felt I developed tiny momentum from that first streak.     Then I set two days as my next NoFap goal. The momentum I had made two days a little bit easier.     That's how I went from one small goal to another.     After 8+ years, I don’t track NoFap days anymore but I am still the counting guy in many other things. I do it to see my progress. I also use this as a reminder of my goals. I hate the idea of resetting my streak in any kind of good habit that I am implementing. Take sleep or food intake, for example.      Now if you feel that counting days is holding you back, experiment with not counting days. Instead, make days count by adopting a lifestyle of making the right choice every time.      Make a promise to yourself that fapping is in the past. You are carving a new identity that is so good that porn or excessive fapping is simply out of the question. ———————————————- OTHER VIDEOS YOU MIGHT LIKE: ?How Long Does It Take for a Brain to Heal from Pornography: https://youtu.be/z2oepsyvE-s ?No PMO Depression after Week One (And Easy-to-Use Tools for Coping with It): https://youtu.be/H-mLIQXRbpQ ?How Long to Rewire Brain from Porn Addiction: https://youtu.be/yT1ECk8ZQIw https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdA0oZPOSZLFLOj7VoVfwspnc6iIoj0z2 ———————————————- ABOUT PORN DETOX COACH ROMAN MIRONOV I help people reclaim their life and actualize their potential by going porn-free. 352: Ryan Banta on A “Centrist’s” Approach to Speed Development and the Critical Mass Philosophy Today’s guest is track coach Ryan Banta.  Ryan has over two decades of experience, is the author of the Sprinter’s Compendium, and is a MTCCCA Hall of Fame Coach. He is a frequently appearing podcast guest and writer on many popular track and field, and athletic performance platforms.  His teams have achieved substantial success, including winning the 2022 girls Class 4 Missouri State Championship.

One of the beautiful things about working with human beings is that there are multiple ways to train athletes towards their highest physical potential.  Different coaches achieve success with different training parameters and exercise selections, mannerisms and personal styles.  At the same time, there are also some core philosophies to the entire process of training that are foundational to progression, and can make training more understandable.  Some of the over-arching principles that are helpful to study are those of core training cycle setup, training the “ends” vs. the “center”, and principles of progression and variety in a program.  By better understanding these core ideas, we can have a better idea of where we are starting, and where we are heading in a program.

On today’s show, Ryan gets into the core philosophies and principles of the Critical Mass training program in track and field, which is a broad-spanning path of development from freshman to senior that incorporates a span of abilities ranging from hurdles to the 400m.  Ryan then gets into his speed training philosophy, taking a “centrist” path to speed, and how that differs from going “ends to middle”, or taking a block-based approach to a training season.  Ryan goes extensively into concepts around his 14-day speed training cycle, how he adds variety into his program, how he utilizes resisted sprinting, and much more.

“Throughout the program, I believe in resting the system, but not necessarily resting the athlete”

“I like to start in the middle, so I am going to start in the 200-400m area in my training, and then play with systems below that (100-200 focused days), and above that (more 400-800m days)”

“Monday we might do max velocity and acceleration, Thursday of week do I am going to have something like looks like that again, but in the meantime there are going to be other sessions where those qualities get ticked off of the box”

353: Scott Robinson on Driving Attention in Training and the Power of Self-Affirmation Today’s guest is neurology expert, consultant and personal trainer, Scott Robinson.  Scott is an Applied Movement Neurology Master practitioner and has worked successfully with all levels of neurological complexity in his time training and coaching a wide variety of clients.  Scott is a specialist in dealing with a variety of neurological issues, such as weakness, pain, range of motion and trauma to the emotional systems, amongst many others.  Scott is a former Taekwondo athlete and has more than 20 years of experience in Applied Movement Neurology.

The element of training and performance that truly defines who has achieved their highest potential, is the mastery of their mental and emotional state.  The state of the mind, the way we drive attention to what we are doing, how we affirm our actions, and how we light up our neurological system all play a large role in the training results we get, how we enjoy the process, and ultimately how we grow from it on multiple levels.

On today’s podcast, Scott Robinson talks about the power of self-affirmation and mental reinforcement in the roles of training and rehabilitation, as well as how novelty plays into those affirmations.  He also gets into visual training methods that link with physical training outputs, warmup methods to improve the neurological quality of the session, working with one’s subconscious mind, harnessing the placebo effect in training, and more.

“The things that I did were holding gratitude all the way through the injury… and through the process making sure I was keeping the whole system fired up and stimulated and looking to make new connections around the musculature”

“My filler exercises were all of the kinds of activities that were going to drive increased attention, increased alternates, that sets the stage for neuro-plasticity, so that when you come back to whatever you are doing, the brain is ready to make new connections”

354: Adarian Barr and Jenn Pilotti on Foot Training, Pressure, and Collision Management in Athletic Movement Today’s podcast features Adarian Barr and Jenn Pilotti.  Adarian is a former college track coach, a multi-national movement consultant and educator.  Adarian has been a huge mentor to me when it comes to the integrated workings of the body in a variety of sport and movement skills and has had many appearances on this show.  Jenn Pilotti is a movement coach, author and educator who has been studying the principles of movement for over 2 decades.  Jenn’s movement disciplines include running, dance, soft acrobatics, and aerial arts. Jenn regularly lectures and teaches workshops for movement educators and curious movers. She co-authored "Let Me Introduce You”, along with Adarian Barr.

Training the feet is a lot more than going barefoot a little more often.  In sport movement, and locomotion, we have collisions of the feet into the ground that need to be managed skillfully.  There is nuance to the “force production” into the ground.  Great athletes can manage collisions extremely well, in regards to the specific sport skills they are being called on.  They also have the tissue adaptation that matches the pressure they need to output within movement.

In today’s podcast, Adarian and Jenn discuss their process when it comes to the operation of the feet in locomotion, and important distinctions that need to be made on account of points of pressure within the foot.  They chat on the differences between sprinting on account of collision management, as well as vibration, talk about the balance of sensory work and outputs in movement, and much more.

Quotes from Adarian Barr and Jenn Pilotti

“I focused on keeping the pinkie toe long, and reaching it a little away from the foot; and it created a very different impact away from the ground… and I had like a 3 mile chunk where my mile splits were within 8 seconds of each other; and I’m not working any harder”

“A lot of people just do and they don’t sense, or they just sense and they don’t do… we need both”

“The body awareness you gain from the softer side just makes doing so much better”

“Whenever I was drinking out of a glass (instead of a plastic cup) my hand doesn’t get tired; that started taking me down this whole feeling, sensing, imagining road”

“In early track, I didn’t feel it.  I might jump well, but I didn’t know why I jumped well.  When I left Colorado I was struggling, because I was only jumping 51 feet, I left Colorado I spent a year training myself.. the first track meet I went to, boom 53 feet.  What happened? Now, I can feel this.

“You want to feel the impact as you run, take time to feel the impact so you can learn what to do with it.

Consider what “triggers” you to eat more than your body needs. It all starts with our thoughts. And our thoughts lead us to a feeling — for better or worse. And these feelings are what drive our actions. Our actions produce our outcomes. When we take action, we get a result. And when that action is overeating, the result is excess body fat. This is basic Cognitive Behavioral Psychology and it’s what today’s episode of the Fat Murder Podcast is all about. Join us as we discuss how to bring the cycle of overeating to an end.
