Recognising and Honouring Emotional Labour In this Episode I’m focussing on the emotional component of our roles as Yoga Teachers, as opposed to the cognitive and physical parts. Specifically, we are talking about emotional labour and understanding how knowing the rules of what is OK to emote, regulating our own emotions and then performing sometimes contradictory emotions in an important part of the work we do, but without support, can lead to poor mental health outcomes. Oh, and there’s some tips on managing it better, too.REFERENCES:Emotional Labour (with James Clarke), Mental Work Podcast: https://omny.fm/shows/mental-work/emotional-labour-with-james-clarkeIdentifying Compassion Fatigue, https://www.cma.ca/physician-wellness-hub/content/compassion-fatigue accessed 4.4.23Understand the Basics of Trauma, https://toolkit.lifeline.org.au/topics/trauma/about-trauma?_ga=2.114515779.55191349.1680570828-1862762973.1680570828, accessed 4.4.23The Managed Heart, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Managed_Heart, accessed 4.4.23Support the show by becoming a Patron here: www.patreon.com/AmyMcDonaldLearn all about the Abundant Yoga Teacher Retreat here: https://www.amymcdonald.com.au/retreats

Your questions:What's the most challenging injury or illness you've had and how did you get through it?I have seen many yoga studios and teachers posting on social media photos of doing adjustments to students in classes, for example, a seated forward fold, another person lying on the back for whatever reason, and some other adjustments and help when students are holding in poses. My question is, are we supposed to use our body weights on people or is it safe to even do any kind of these so-called adjustments? What is one thing that you can't live without? To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: lytyoga.com/blog/category/podcasts/Do you have a question?DM Lara on Instagram: @lara.heimannDM Kristin on Instagram: @kbwilliams99Email us at [email protected]:Visit relationshipschool.com/lara to get 50% off your first month of relationship coaching. Wednesday Q&A: Moving Better With Age, Yoga for Disc Herniation, & the Best Time to Workout Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!In this Wednesday Q&A, we answer your questions about moving better as we age, LYT yoga for cervical disc herniation, and the best time of day to workout. Your questions:* Do you think we can move better as we age?* From the Wednesday Q&A podcast regarding disk herniation, if a client has a slipped disk at the cervical spine and was advised by her chiro to do soft yoga or gentle, needing to avoid down dog, is it okay if she continues our LYT yoga practice? At some point, I kind of know the answer, because that's what we highlight in a lot of classes, that neutral spine position and definitely working with the cervical neck flexors to strengthen. But I would like to hear more insights from you both. * Is it better to workout in the morning or later in the day?To learn more, and for the complete show notes, visit: lytyoga.com/blog/category/podcasts/Do you have a question?DM Lara on Instagram: @lara.heimannDM Kristin on Instagram: @kbwilliams99Email us at [email protected]:Learn more and sign up for the LYT Yoga teacher trainings here: https://www.lytyogatraining.com/Join the LYT Team in Europe this summer:https://shop.lytyoga.com/collections/in-person-workshops-2023 Hosted on Acast. 319: Do I Need Another Yoga Training? with Shannon Crow The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 319: Do I Need Another Yoga Training? with Shannon Crow   Description: It is a common trend among yoga teachers to take one yoga teacher training (YTT) program after another. But is it really necessary and when should you consider taking another YTT? Shannon Crow explores some of the main reasons yoga teachers sign up for YTTs.   There are several reasons why yoga teachers take YTTs. Continuing education is important, but for many yoga teachers, it is often a case of wanting to get more students, make more income, be offered more teaching opportunities, and deepen their expertise in a speciality. Shannon dives into why a YTT may not be the right course of action in some cases, and when it does add value. She also touches on the pyramid scheme of YTTs and some things to watch out for before signing up.   This is the perfect episode to listen to if you are considering signing up for another YTT – give this a listen and ask yourself if you really need another yoga training or if there’s something else that would help you achieve the results you are looking for instead.   Key Takeaways: [2:25] It's common for yoga teachers to take many yoga trainings, but this may not be necessary! [4:44] Do you really need another yoga teacher training right now? Shannon shares a question she asked in The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook Group. [6:15] Shannon explores the first reason people have for signing up for another YTT – to get more students in their classes or increase their income – and what you could do instead. [8:22] Another reason yoga teachers cite for taking another YTT is they want to be recognized as more of an expert or they want more teaching opportunities. [10:00] Shannon gives a shout out to sponsors, OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals. [12:36] Yoga teachers often take a YTT to upgrade their skills or education to teach specific styles of yoga or a specific population. [13:27] There are also yoga teachers who sign up for YTTs for the community it offers. [13:51] What if you waited to make some profit and then use that profit to invest in your next yoga teacher training or continuing education course? [14:52] Shannon addresses something she has observed in the yoga industry – pressuring yoga teachers to "invest" in continuing education, mentorship, or coaching. [17:26] You can wait to make a profit in your yoga business first before signing up for the next course or training.   Links: Balance Flow Yoga: 7-Week Online Series with Shelly Prosko (Code: BALANCE) <a href="https://www.theconnectedyoga
Yoga and the Spine with Kaya Mindlin What do you think of when we talk about the spine in yoga? Probably anatomy, the spine in Asana, posture, age of the spine, backbends and more. But mostly we end up staying in the physical , western view of the spine in yoga. But according to yogis, the spine is so much more than just the physical spine. Having vast implications on the journey of a seeker. In this episode, we dive into the spine and yoga with Kaya Mindlin, who walks us through mythological stories from the puranas to helping us understand the subtle spine in ways that will be new to many of you but also takes you beyond just the physical spine. Yin Yoga and Meditation with Addie deHilster This week I am interviewing Addie deHilster. Addie is a mindful movement teacher whose teaching prioritizes mindfulness from the Vipassana tradition. She blends many styles of movement including Yoga, somatics and chi gong to facilitate embodiment. We discuss how Yin yoga in many ways is already a very accessible form of meditation. You will learn how to apply concepts from Vipassana including compassion, and non-resistance to your practice and how to apply Yin components such as body awareness and regulation to your meditation practice. We know that meditation is so beneficial, but many of us lack the time, knowledge or confidence to really commit. I know this discussion will inspire you to turn the things you are already doing in your Yin practice into your own mindfulness practice.Addie deHilster is a Mindfulness Meditation Teacher and C-IAYT Yoga Therapist. Her passion is teaching movement practices that "unlock" mindfulness skills, and helping students gain traction in their meditation practice so they can be more present for their lives. She is a graduate of the Mindfulness Mentor Training with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach, the InsightLA Mindfulness Facilitator Training, and the 2014-15 Mindfulness Yoga & Meditation Training Program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. She has studied Yin Yoga with Bernie Clark, Paul Grilley, and Sarah Powers. Maggie Gardener | Inclusivity, Brain Health & Putting a Tutu on the Badger I first met Maggie Gardener when she came to try a class of mine before committing to my teacher training. I was immediately struck by her warmth, presence and intelligence. Maggie has gone on to open a studio of her own where the focus is on creating a safe space where students can show up exactly as they are without the fear of being judged or even worse, ignored.  We talk about the need for inclusivity in all areas of yoga, and how teachers can make students living in bigger bodies feel not just seen, but welcomed. We also touch on mental health, and how ‘brain heath’ is a much more positive name for an aspect of wellness that touches us all at one time or another. PS You’ll have to listen to learn about ‘Putting a Tutu on the Badger’FIND MAGGIE:Website: The Blissful Canary YogaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/movelovelaughgrowInstagram: @the_blissful_canary

Meditation: Shamatha Practice Shamatha means Calm Abiding or Peacefully Remaining and is the foundation of Buddhist Mindfulness Practice. Taking our seat and placing our attention on an anchor such as the breath,  offers us a home ground, a safe but transient sensation that allows us to return to our embodiment in the present moment. When we pause from the momentum of life in this way, we begin to breed an inner sanctuary, a calm resting place from where we can experience life more fully. This ability to abide in reality is what is known as The Lion’s Roar of Confidence.Thank you for your practice. With love and blessingsKia & Yotam xFor more info about Kia´s International Workshop Schedule,  our Borderless Online Shala and Global Sangha, please visit: http://mysoreyogaparis.comFor more free resources please sign up to our newsletter:https://www.mysoreyogaparis.com/newsletter-sign-upMore music by Yotam can be found at:https://www.yotamagam.com/musicLinktr.ee offers a comprehensive list of resources for raising awareness, driving donations and sharing information in support of justice and equality.

Also, how do you make peace with the ego and maintain a sense of identity when transitioning from a ‘well respected’ job in society’s eyes to running your business which has far less street cred?” Here’s my answers!Support the show by becoming a Patron here: www.patreon.com/AmyMcDonaldLearn all about the Abundant Yoga Teacher Retreat here: https://www.amymcdonald.com.au/retreats
318: Questions to Ask Before Any YTT with Shannon Crow The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 318: Questions to Ask Before Any YTT with Shannon Crow   Description: Continuing education is an important part of your professional development as a yoga teacher but with a multitude of yoga teacher training (YTT) programs available, it is important to pick the right one. Shannon Crow shares some of the questions she asks before signing up for a YTT.   Shannon has had the experience of going from one YTT to the next and this is something that you may experience if you are a newer yoga teacher. While it is important to build the necessary skills to teach, we need to also be aware of where we are investing our time, energy, and money.   Shannon recommends asking questions about the YTT before signing up. Some things to consider include the accessibility and inclusion of the program, the yoga school’s stance on cultural appropriation, and their values. She also invites you to ask questions about the lead trainers’ experience, their position on medicine and science, religion and spirituality and anything else that may be important for you. The important thing is to ensure that the yoga teacher training you choose is aligned with your values.   Key Takeaways: [1:40] Continuing education is an important part of your professional development as a yoga teacher but there are some hard truths we should be aware of before signing up for the next yoga teacher training. [2:31] Shannon shares her personal experience with yoga teacher trainings and continuing education. [7:14] Shannon shares some questions she would ask if she were signing up for a yoga teacher training today. [10:13] Shannon gives a shout out of thanks to sponsors, OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals. [12:30] Shannon talks about how she ended up in a yoga teacher training where the lead teacher talked about aliens instead of yoga sutras! [13:33] Some other questions Shannon would ask include their yoga philosophy for the trainings and scope of practice. [14:28] Shannon highlights some other questions you might be interested in asking a yoga school or yoga teacher training program before you sign up. [16:29] It can also be helpful to ask to speak with past graduates and lead trainers of a yoga teacher training to see if it is a good fit for you. [19:21] It's important to ensure that the yoga teacher training you choose is aligned with your values.   Questions to Ask Before Any Yoga Teacher Training Do you teach how to make yoga accessible? 195 – How to Leave a Thing How do you leave a thing in a generous way? These four mindset intentions help me navigate the times I say "no" to make more room for a "yes" while still honoring the way the thing changed me. Having just left a studio that I've taught at for a year and a half, a change that felt hard but right, I lean into abundance, gratitude, listening and ceremony (could also be called celebration) to find a well of peace as I move forward. This is not the podcast about figuring out timing or money, this is about how we talk to ourselves and move bravely forward with grace. Listen to Yoga Strong 192 – Listening to What Your Pain Is Telling You for more on wellnessListen to the Sexy Sunday Podcast HEREBuy Bonnie a cup of tea at @Bonnie-WeeksSign up for Bonnie’s sexy Sunday poetry prompts HEREConnect with Bonnie: Instagram, Email ([email protected]), WebsiteThe music for this episode is Threads by The Light Meeting. 196 – The Infinite Game of Being Human What are you paying attention to? Is it the infinite process of coming to know yourself? Is it the way you might be feeling shame? It’s so easy to take shame on in this life, the feeling of doing “this” wrong, of not belonging. When we feel shame, we feel small. We lose the essence of self and how we express ourselves in this world. We get to be the truest version of ourselves when we show up in bravery and curiosity, but curiosity and shame cannot coexist. So what might it feel like if we set shame down, if only for a moment, and share our feelings with each other, or with ourselves? There is no end to this game of being a human, so let’s put shame aside. Let’s be open and honest and curious. This infinite game we all get to play? It’s beautiful.Listen to the Sexy Sunday Podcast HEREBuy Bonnie a cup of tea at @Bonnie-WeeksSign up for Bonnie’s sexy Sunday poetry prompts HEREConnect with Bonnie: Instagram, Email ([email protected]), WebsiteThe music for this episode is Threads by The Light Meeting. Find Out About My Momentum Magic Method (EP.233) What makes one feel momentum? Why does it feel so magical when we’re making progress? Find out more in this episode where I share lots of ways to gain momentum in different areas of your teaching so that you can feel confident and help more people.
Feeling Based Cues (EP.234) In the framework I teach for “types of cues” we have action, alignment, anatomy and feeling based. In  today’s episode we take a deeper look at the somatic based/ feeling based cues. This can be an interesting area for you to explore with your students and I share it, not necessarily in the context of teaching just restorative yoga, but instead, ways you can seamlessly blend somatic cues into any class to enhance the experience of the student.

In today’s episode, we are going to flip the script and contemplate the times we are indoors, staring at screens, and disconnected from nature. Maybe the answer for you lies in stress, in an inability to set boundaries, or in an old trauma. Once you can define it, it’ll help you come back home. Tune in to begin. Community Birth Story: The Wildest Night of My Life with Alexis Field Today on Yoga| Birth | Babies we have an absolutely gripping, fascinating, and very NYC birth story. As my guest Alexis Field puts it, “It was the wildest night of my life and the birth I had always hoped for.” I’ve listened to birth stories for years and I love each and every one. What I absolutely love about Alexis’ birth story is that in addition to being a fantastic, empowering, and exciting tale, Alexis (the parent who gave birth), is a performer. She knows how to hold the space and really tell a story. You are going to be thrilled as you hear Alexis share how her labor and birth experience unfolded, it really is wild. For those of you based here in NYC, I know you’ll be able to envision the five floor walk up that she lives in (and how her husband has to help people in and out of the building). Alexis will have you on the edge of your seat. I’m so excited for you to feel inspired and excited and root for Alexis throughout her story.

How to Prepare Your Home for Baby to Thrive the Montessori Way with Jeanne-Marie Paynel When you think about preparing your home for the arrival of your new baby your mind might go to a place of baby-proofing and purchasing toys and gear like cribs and high chairs. However, what if you home didn't need more stuff? Today we're looking at how to create an environment that encourages your baby's growth and honors their developmental stages through the Montessori lensTo have this conversation, I invited Jeanne-Marie Paynel onto Yoga | Birth | Babies. Jeanne-Marie is a parenting mentor, Montessori home consultant, a doula, host of The Art of Parenting podcast and founder of Your Parenting Mentor. We have a fantastic conversation and in full disclosure I drink the Montessori punch. Both my kids went to Montessori preschools. We took a lot of their offerings and brought them home, so this topic and approach really resonated with me. I deeply value what is being discussed about the idea that we need to get more and more and more to better support our child's growth but often it's actually about being more simplistic. I love this approach to encourage kids to discover on their own, allow them to be who they really are, and see things from their point of view, (and I mean literally getting down on the ground to do this). I'm really excited for you to listen to this conversation.
