Garden People: Lucy Hunter - creative director, garden & floral artist, photographer, author My guest is Lucy Hunter, a multi-hyphenate if there ever was one: creative director, garden designer, floral artist, stylist, photographer, teacher, author, botanical dyer…the list goes on. Based in North Wales in the UK, Lucy is, at root, a restless creative who is always adding to her list of projects and modes of expression. She shows us how useless labels can be in a creative life, and how generous our output becomes when we do away with them. Her book, The Flower Hunter: Seasonal Flowers Inspired by Nature and Gathered from the Garden, was published in November of 2021. I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop with Lucy, Gabriela Salazar, and Max Gill this past March, and saw first-hand her creative force at play. From design notes to photography demonstrations, her energy and engagement with attendees and their work was simply amazing. I’m so happy to welcome her here today.Lucy will have another whirlwind tour of workshops in the coming months, including one in October with TJ McGrath in New Jersey. Next year, she will return to New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and New Orleans in March, and Provence in April. 5 Late Summer Blooming Native Plants I Love Late summer is often thought of as a challenging time for gardening. It’s hot, it’s humid, we may or may not be getting regular rainfall, and there are often lots of other summertime activities competing for our attention. But if our goal is to plant for pollinators and wildlife, then it is important to make sure we have plenty of plants blooming at this time of year too. In this episode of the Backyard Ecology podcast, I share some of the native plants that I love and why I love them so you can decide if they are right for you. All of these plants bloom in the July / August time frame, attract lots of pollinators, and have a large native range that includes Kentucky. You’ll have to look up the plant to see if it is native to where you live. I’m not saying these are the “best native plants to plant,” because there is no way for me to know if these are the best plants for you without talking to you and learning more about your property and goals. These are simply some of the native plants I love and are in no particular order because my “favorite” has a tendency to change based on which one I’m looking at and what pollinators I’m thinking about. To make it easier for you to refer back to particular parts of the podcast, here are the plants and the time I start talking about each: Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea): 3:22 Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta): 5:43 Mountain mints (Pycnanthemum sp.): 9:22 Goldenrods (Solidago sp.): 12:51 Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum): 17:22 Links Relevant Backyard Ecology blog articles about the plants I talk about: Purple Coneflower: https://www.backyardecology.net/purple-coneflower/ Black-eyed Susan: A favorite nectar source for butterflies: https://www.backyardecology.net/black-eyed-susan-a-favorite-nectar-source-for-butterflies/ Slender Mountain Mint: https://www.backyardecology.net/slender-mountain-mint/ Sweet Goldenrod: https://www.backyardecology.net/sweet-goldenrod/ Goldenrods: https://www.backyardecology.net/goldenrods/ Cup plant: https://www.backyardecology.net/cup-plant/ Wasps: Victims of an Often Undeserved Reputation: https://www.backyardecology.net/wasps-victims-of-an-often-undeserved-reputation/ Busy Bee Nursery and Consulting: https://busybeenurseryandconsulting.com/ Backyard Ecology Website: https://backyardecology.net Backyard Ecology YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/backyardecology Backyard Ecology Blog: https://www.backyardecology.net/blog/ Backyard Ecology Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/backyardecology Subscribe to Backyard Ecology emails: https://www.backyardecology.net/subscribe/ Episode image: Eastern tiger swallowtails on cup plant flowers Photo credit: Shannon Trimboli, all rights reserved

What seeds to plant in August in the Garden and Allotment Are you wondering what seeds you can plant in August in the allotment and garden? Her Gardening With Ben talks about all the vegetables, flowers, and fruit you can plant in August in the allotment and garden.
Ep. 145 - LET'S EAT! Kitchen gardens are a grow your owner's dream during August, so what are Head Gardeners, Lucy and Saul, harvesting? And what can you sow now to ensure crops roll in year round? Take a 30-minute break this weekend to find out. Long summer days, high temperatures and maximum sunlight are the hall marks of a good summer (lets hope for a little rain though!). The Summer of 2022 is eagerly awaited by all the keen gardens up and down the UK as herbaceous borders, roses, veg gardens and meadows are awash with new plantings, flower and a general sense of abundance that only Summer can bring. Whereas Spring is a steady ramping of growth the Summer is a time for 'peak  plant' followed by the mellow and relaxed waning into Autumn - so slap on that sun scream, stick on your favourite summer hat and get out and enjoy all the hard work you've undertaken in your garden! We're all so much more aware of the benefits of growing your own fruit and vegetables these days, and if you're a Head Gardener on an estate with a large kitchen garden, it's happy days during August. Saul and Lucy both love growing food for their employers, so what have they been harvesting over the past few days? Hear tales of courgettes, French beans, salads and agretti (plus, don't forget the fruit!). August is also a key month to start off hardier crops to yield during the cooler months, so Lucy urges you to utilise your glasshouse to the max this autumn and winter. In essence, get sowing!Twitter links:Saul @GardeningSaulLucy @HeadGardenerLCIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Support the showSupport the show

308. Rehousing is about people not only about houses - Ana Catarino Ana Catarino (Anthropologist, Ateliermob, Lisbon, Portugal)Terras da Costa project in PortugalWithout water, sanitation, and precarious constructions. These are the living conditions of almost 500 people – approximately 100 children – who inhabit a neighborhood of illegal origin in Costa da Caparica. Called Terras da Costa, this neighborhood is mostly occupied by two communities: of African and Gypsy origin. There are no official data on the genesis of this neighborhood. It is only known that the construction of houses on these lands began with the existence of buildings to support agricultural activity, with reports from residents who say they have lived there for 30 years. In an aerial photographic record, from 2001, Ana and her team were able to identify a consolidated neighborhood, whose limits have increased over the last decade. This is isolated and invisible territory. EP136- What To Sow In The August Vegetable Garden In this weeks episode of Master My Garden podcast John looks at what to sow in the August vegetable garden. August is generally is a month great harvests in our vegetable gardens. When it comes to what we can sow the number of seeds that we can actually sow is reducing dramatically. So what can we sow?We can still sow lots of salad leaves lettuce, spinach, winter purslane, mizuna and others. We can also sow scallions, chard, Kale, radish, Milan purple top turnips (or other small varieties.  Along with some cabbage for spring heads so there are still lots to sow to extend our harvests late into the winter. If you have bare ground be sure to cover it with green manures and health your soil health good for the spring. Also you can start lining up your perennial seed for sowing from September onwards. I will cover this in an episode in the coming weeks. There will be a blog post on this episode very soon on my website.
