EP 195: Gone To The Dogs at the Tennis Center Steve joined the PKC staff in 1998, the same year his guest Rusty Jones made the final four and placed second overall in the PKC Youth World Championship at Aurora.  A recent phone conversation between the longtime friends prompted Steve to record this look back at one of the most enjoyable times for both he and Jones as well as thousands of other coon hunters, in all their years of experience with the sport.Jones and Steve paint a mental picture of the Tennis Center, not only by describing the physical attributes of the legendary venue but also by sharing stories of the people that made each visit to Aurora so special each year when October rolled around. This is coon hunting conversation with a nostalgic twist that will make those that never experienced Aurora wish they had, and all that were fortunate to be there, to yearn passionately to go back again.  See if you don’t agree.

Tony is a long time outdoor writer, host of the Foundations episodes of the Wired To Hunt podcast, MeatEater content contributor, and all out deer hunting nut. Tony has a knack for getting it done on quick out of state bow hunts, just like the one John is about to embark on.John and Tony dive right into what it takes to kill an early season whitetail. John has a lot of cards stacked against him on this quick hunt, but Tony helps him shuffle the deck to try and sort a few things out. John will have only two or three days to locate and kill a buck in a mix of corn, CRP, and timber. Tony and John talk about where bucks might be bedding, what types of food sources they might be hitting, and how John might be able to get in between the two. Tony also talks about how much he enjoys hunting Oklahoma, and the guys spend some time talking about the current state of the deer herd and how it might improve. Ep. 52 – Philosophy of Elk Calling with Jay Scott The 2022 elk season is just around the corner for most of us, so it's time to start getting serious about figuring out what we're going to do, where, how, and most importantly – WHY! One of those things is choosing a calling strategy for the elk we'll be chasing, within the context of the different herd dynamics, hunting pressure, habitats, and environmental conditions we'll be chasing them in. In this podcast – the first of at least three during the month of August – we're going to talk to Jay Scott, of Jay Scott Outdoors, and deep-dive into his preferred elk calling strategy, how he came to "develop" it, why it's worked for him for so long, in so many different places, chasing some of the biggest bulls on the planet, and why he thinks it's a sound strategy for MOST elk hunters, regardless of where they are hunting. By now it's no secret that Jay and Chris think alike when it comes to talking to elk, but here, we focus on Jay's insights, opinions, experiences, and analysis. Coming up in this particular series will be Steve Chappell of Chappell Guide Service and Elk Camp TV, and Dirk Durham of Phelps Game Calls.
394 - Southern SPOT & STALK Whitetail Hunting with Ray Martin This week on the show we are joined by Ray Martin of Florida to talk aggressive spot & stalk whitetail tactics! Ray has been hunting whitetails this way in FL and GA for a long time, and today we get into:
Not being afraid to get aggressive and get down to go to deer that are out of range with a bow
Hunting on very limited time, making something happen with the time you have
Being smart with your time and turning otherwise unproductive parts of a hunt into more opportunities
Flatland deer funnels great for hunting and trailcam setups
How deer actually use water to travel in Ray's area
Decoying bucks
and MUCH MORE!

Took his first international game animal (Warthog) in South Africa this year.Aidan has shot and wants to continue shooting competitive benchrest as well as recently joining the Waller County Sharpshooter 4H team (clays). He also gets recognized when walking around the hunting tradeshows here in Houston by a few people who watch him online and like to see how he is learning. He also became friends with the owner of Texas Hog Bait at a tradeshow and was sent an official "Pro Staff " vest from them from the work he has done trying to help promote the product and for just being a good kid learning to hunt safely.
Denise Ford Sawadogo of Montclair Brewery I first learned about Montclair Brewery during Black History Month. Since opening in 2018, the brewery has honored prominent Black figures—from Harriet Tubman with its Tubman Railroad Strawberry Pale Ale to Chadwick Boseman with its Boseman Wild Ale. I had the chance to talk with Denise Ford Sawadogo, the co-owner and founder of Montclair Brewery, for an article I was working on for the New Brewer. While speaking to her, I was amazed at how much the couple’s backgrounds showed up in their work at Montclair Brewery—Denise’s family is from Jamaica and her husband, Leo, is from West Africa. Their culture appears in the music, programming, and of course, the beers they brew. It’s a great reminder of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and how exposure to other cultures can increase our knowledge of the world around us while also teaching us something about ourselves. In our conversation, we talk about how the brewery’s story began in Montclair, New Jersey, and the beautiful neighborhood which it’s named after. Denise also shares how the couples bring their culture into the brewery, including the inspiration behind their Black History Series. We also talk about our moms, their entrepreneurial spirit, and how we learned never to give up on our dreams.
4 Ways to Read Water Actually, it is one way to read water with four parts. But that is way too long for a podcast title. After sharing an anecdote about my failing to read water well, I go into my four-pronged approach to approaching rivers. While not remarkable or novel, I believe that this multi-tiered technique is a great paradigm to help new anglers grasp the concept. It is also a great reminder or teaching tool for those of us who have been at this fly fishing thing for a while.Instead of just getting out there and flailing away at the deepest pool, take a minute to read the water. There might be fish there.Listen to the episode below, or on your favorite podcast app. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Annihilator Broadheads On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks to the guys at Annihilator Broadheads about everything from the initial idea to process of bring the final product to market. Brandon and Micah talk about how the first time this idea was shared was at an elk camp where another hunter hit a bull but was never able to recover it. From there, the brainstorming started and eventually led to a prototype. The guys were blown away by the initial testing that had shown very large would channels thus reducing the drag on the arrow and causing more penetration. This is another awesome episode that shows how passion for bowhunting can drive us to create some pretty amazing technology. Material, design, flight path, and engineering are all topics of discussing in this weeks episode. Enjoy!

Why do people from other religions and cults also speak in tongues? Do all "saved" people have to speak in tongues? These and more such questions are dealt with in this podcast.

Pensacola Report: Kings & Cobia Offshore On today's episode we talk with Capt. Brant Peacher of AnglerUp with Brant out of Pensacola, FL. He tells us about the rain that has moved through the area in recent weeks and has made for significant challenges if you're fishing inshore. Not only the water clarity and temperature are effected but most importantly the salinity. When the salinity drops quickly the fish shut down and usually find cleaner, saltier water. That being said, anything on the gulf side is your best bet and with the area's multiple piers and beach access' you should still be able to wet a line if your land locked. Boats should plan to head out to chase the cobia and king's that are prevalent on offshore & nearshore wrecks right now.
Port St Joe/Apalachicola Report: Shrimp Hatch & Big Tripletail around Apalach On today's show we talk with Capt. Jordan Todd of Saltwater Obsessions out of Port St Joe, FL. We talk about the fishing around St Joe Bay as well as nearshore & offshore. Sounds like inshore is tough in St Joe Bay but the bite on the beaches and nearshore is still going strong. Jordan also tells us about the first shrimp hatch of the year around Apalachicola & a trip where they caught some monster triple tail around Indian Pass. It sounds like things have moved into the typical late summer patterns & there are certainly fish to be caught!
Port St Joe/Apalachicola: Live Chumming for King Mackerel-Part 2 On today's episode we talk with Capt. Jordan Todd of Saltwater Obsessions out of Port St Joe, FL. and we finish our conversation from last week about live chumming for King's. In part 2, we talk about the other fish that come up in the live chum slick along with Kingfish. Inshore, it sounds like the wet weather that moved through the area last week and the summer pop up thunderstorms helped to get the bite fired up. Those showers cool the water temp down quickly and create oxygen in the water. Sometimes the fish respond well to little those rain events, so don't let a little rain send you to the dock, sometimes that's what they are waiting for.
Pensacola Report: A Phenomenal Offshore Bite On today's show we talk with Capt. Brant Peacher of AnglerUp with Brant out of Pensacola, FL. He tells us about a fantastic bite offshore. There's no shortage of Red Snapper but you might also find Mahi oriented to floating structure or the occasional King Mackerel. There is plenty of action to be had this time of year. The late summer patterns are just getting going & it is a great time to head out. Like Brant mentioned, surf fishing is really tough right now so one of the most effective ways to get on the fish if you don't have boat access, is to take advantage of one of the local piers or hire a local charter captain to head offshore. Either way, there's a lot of fish to target right now!
Panama City Beach Report: Tripletail & Mahi Nearshore On today's show we talk with Capt. Justin Leake of Panama City Inshore out of Panama City Beach, FL. & we get a full fishing report on the PCB area. We talk about the inshore bite, the offshore & nearshore bite as well as the tarpon migration. It sounds like everything is still fishing well. The snapper bite became harder to get as to be expected late in the season and the heat makes inshore fishing difficult any time other than first light or sunset. Justin explains what to expect as we begin the slow transition into fall and cooler temperatures. Pay attention, because there is some great advice regarding how to change your approach when the surface temp begins to cool overnight.

The True Braid, The Whole True Braid, and Nothing But The True Braid Alex Lines, creator and owner of the fishing line company known as True Braid comes on the show to tell us about his fishing experience while living in Cape Cod & Maryland and all about his braided fishing line known as True Braid.  I learned quite a bit from this episode about braid and how it is manufactured.  I've only used braided line since going to the surf/salt water for its strength and sensitivity but I never really looked into how it was made.  Manufactured in Japan, this braided line has shown great strength and durability since I have spooled it up on my lines.  Alex also was very open about a recent event where he found out a certain color line wasn't holding up to par and he pulled it from production to be fixed.  Customer centric is how he drives it and has been maintaining a cult like following since it began.  Affordable, strong, and dependable are solid words to describe this and I hope that you'll enjoy the episode!  Sponsors:Show: The Sinker GuyFirst Bait Check: Ninja Tackle2nd Bait Check: Fishbites3rd Bait Check: SORD Fishing ProductsTheme Song: Dirty Rock by TwisteriaMentions:MarylandCape Cod, MAPenn RodsIsland X LuresSalt SquatchPerdido BlaneSaltwater YankeesJustin HardiganUgly StickPompano TournamentDEMO20#Maryland #CapeCod #PennRods #IslandXLures #SaltSquatch #PerdidoBlane #SaltwaterYankees #JustinHardigan #UglyStick #PompanoTournament #DEMO20

Huntavore - Deer Ribs, Brisket, and Sidemeat On this episode of Huntavore, joining Nick on this in depth discussion is returning guest, Nathan Judice, the RecreationChef. Together they unpack the rib quarter of deer; the location, characteristics, and sound cooking treatments of these muscle groups. Along the way, the guys add tips and tricks to get the most out of this very finicky quarter. If you’ve been wanting to better utilize your deer’s midsection, make it easier to bone out for burger, or elevate these under-appreciated cuts to center stage, tune into this episode of Huntavore.Ribs, Brisket, SidemeatLocation: extends from the lower neck to the pelvis, as high as vertebrae and extending the length of the rib to the sternum.Muscle groups/cuts: intercostal muscles: rib meat, attached between each rib, layers of muscles with pockets of hard fat.flank muscles: attached near the groin and ending at the last rib. Thin in profile, long muscle fibers, lean, some diaphragm: AKA Skirt Steak, internal muscular wall, works the lungs. Located along the inside of the ribsbrisket: front chest muscles. Connects from the sternum to the shoulder. Thin profile, pronounced grainThings to watch for:Thick layers of fat: cut out any thick layers of hard fat, mostly on the outside layers of the ribs. Does not render, very waxy. Not to be confused with soft fat that is striated in the meat.Blood meat: Naturally from a dispatch shot to the lungs, there will be some loss to blood and fragmented bone.Nothing to salvage on damaged flesh. Surface blood can be cut and scraped off an intact muscle. Membrane filled with blood can be removed.Punctured Paunch: Burst Gut material inside the rib cage can compromise the inside cuts. Thick membrane on the inside wall does protect outside muscles. If gut shot and left to lay, the harvestable parts can spoil. If during field dress the gut is nicked, quickly remove the gut, and flush with cold water for several minutes. How to Prepare Each Cut (in our opinions)All cuts can be added to the trim pile. Tip: cut from the ribs, chill flat, makes finding globs of fat and removing this thick fat easier.  Rib: Nick: Two Stage Cooking, low and slow at first, finish at high heat to crisper. Nate:Low and Slow Smoked, 2-3 hrs on smoke, 2-3 hours wrapped in foil, then finished on a hot grill or in your oven on broil. Option 2; Pressure cooker with jus to cover (30 mins to 1 hour) then finish over a hot grill with favorite BBQ sauceDish: Nick: Venison Rib Lolly PopNate: Venison McRib Sandwich Flank/Diaphram/Brisket: Nick: marinaded, followed by high heat, sliced thin cross grain.Nate: Agree with the above 100%, one tip for last minute marinade is to vacuum seal or chamber seal with the marinade to aid in quicker penetration. Or inject marinade Dish: Nick: Steak and FritesNate: Venison Pinwheel. Marinade, pound it out, season all sided, slather with pesto and/or roasted garlic, roll that bad boy up (paying attention to the grain so you’re slicing against the grain), truss or tooth pick it and sear on all sides hot and fast! Oklahoma Outdoors - Oklahoma Fly Fishing This episode of the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast has been a long time coming! Dalton Wortham with the Creek Adventure Podcast joins John this week to talk about fly fishing in Oklahoma. Dalton makes it a point to let people know that fly fishing is not just for the trout streams of the rocky mountains, or the overly wealthy. Dalton and his friends do a lot of their fly fishing in rivers and lakes right here in good ol Oklahoma, and target a vast multitude of species. If you can catch it on a regular rod and reel, there's a good chance you can catch it on a fly rod!Dalton and John talk about all aspects of fly fishing, from beginner rods to the basic gear you need to get started. John asks about some flies that work well in Oklahoma as well as other places, and a few good bodys of water people should check out. And though the guys make it a point that fly fishing is for more than just trout, they do talk about some of the great trout fishing opportunities that Oklahoma offers for both fly fishermen and rod and reel folks. There is no way you can listen to this podcast and not get at least a little curious about fly fishing, and Dalton throws out some other great resources to help people get started and learn more. Western Rookie - Beginner Elk Hunting Strategy On this episode of The Western Rookie Dan talks with Colorado native Chase Seilheimer about his adventures chasing elk in the Rocky Mountains. Chase is a self admitted elk addict. How to Hunt Deer - How to Hunt Bucks in Thermal Hubs w/ Parker McDonald In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Parker McDonald of the Southern Ground Hunting Podcast about hunting deer in thermal hubs. Thermal hubs are essentially areas where the thermals cause scent to collect. Bucks love to use these areas both for bedding and during the rut, as they provide security and the ability to scent check nearby doe bedding. But they can be really tricky to hunt without getting busted. So in this show, Parker explains how to put yourself in a position to stay undetected and take advantage of these buck magnets. If you’re not familiar with Parker, he consistently gets on bucks on highly pressured public land in the deep south. Parker is one of those guys that thinks about hunting on a different level. He’s very analytical, he’s big on hunting terrain features, and he’s developed a style that works really well for him in big woods hill country settings. If you hunt the big woods in hill country, you know there are a lot of factors working against you. Hunting pressure, wind and thermals, low deer density, and more stack the odds against you. But Parker has made specific moves to deal with each of the variables that give lots of guys trouble. He uses water access to get away from pressure, he’s meticulous when it comes to hunting wind and thermals, and he puts himself in areas that hold pockets of deer in areas with an otherwise pretty sparse population. If you hunt big woods, hill country, or just want to better understand how to hunt thermal hubs, this episode is for you. Big thanks to our partners!TACTACAM and REVEAL cell camerasHuntworthDeerLab - use code HUNTDEER for 20% off of any plan! Hunting Gear Podcast - Annihilator Broadheads On this episode of the Hunting Gear Podcast, Dan talks to the guys at Annihilator Broadheads about everything from the initial idea to process of bring the final product to market. Pennsylvania Woodsman - Game Changing Food Plot Strategies: Hold them Season Long It's that time of year where final preparations are coming together for archery season. Food plot planting is in full swing throughout most of the country and beginning to pick up here in the northeast. Social media is blowing up with guys tilling and planting, promoting different seed blends and manufacturers. But how do you really know what fits best for your situation? This week on the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch dives into a fall food plot discussion of tuning fall food plots with hunting strategy.Topics of interest include 1) assessing species requirements based on browse pressure and soil capabilities, 2) maximizing the amount of tonnage for season long hunting, and 3) effectively hunting and holding the local herd with this food plot rotation. We also touch on some potentially simple poor man no-till food plot options. Food plots truly can change the quality of hunting on private land to the point of no return. Anyone who has not experienced this has likely made a fatal mistake in their program that produced poor results. Those mistakes can be avoided and are addressed in this episode! Don't miss out!
