Foster Care: An Unparalleled Journey Foster care is truly an unparalleled experience. This is our journey as a foster and adoptive family that has seen and experienced a lot!

We want to share our joy and heartbreak with the world to inspire others to join in our mission of providing strength to the weakest among us. We are sharing our personal experiences as a foster and adoptive family and the stories that other brave souls are willing to generously share with us.

Our goal is to help potential foster families take that next step in the process and to encourage bio families to work with us towards the best possible resolution for every kid in care.
There is no better place for any kid to be than in their home with a mom and dad that cares enough about them to stop any behavior that puts their kids at risk. If you are willing to work towards that goal, we would love to encourage you to do so in any way we can!

Come listen to our story and find your hope!
You can find us at linktr.ee/fostercarenation
Brains On! Science podcast for kids Brains On!® is a science podcast for curious kids and adults from American Public Media. Each week, a different kid co-host joins Molly Bloom to find answers to fascinating questions about the world sent in by listeners. Like, do dogs know they’re dogs? Or, why do feet stink? Plus, we have mystery sounds for you to guess, songs for you to dance to, and lots of facts — all checked by experts.
Raising Good Humans As a parent, do you ever wish someone could just whisper some realistic and trustworthy support in your ear? And not make you feel awful for not having all the answers? Well, that’s what I’m here for.

I'm Dr. Aliza Pressman, developmental psychologist, parent educator, asst. clinical professor, and co-founder of both Mount Sinai Parenting Center and SeedlingsGroup. And I'm a mom… trying to raise two good humans myself, so I'm in this with you!

In each episode, we'll go deep (but brief) with both experts and parents to share the most effective approaches and tools and talk about the important bigger picture of raising good humans. My goal is to make your parenting journey less overwhelming and a lot more joyful!

Please join me every Friday for new episodes of Raising Good Humans.
Nurture vs Nurture with Dr. Wendy Mogel Nurture vs Nurture is a new podcast brought to you by the producers of Armchair Expert. Dr. Wendy Mogel, social-clinical psychologist and author, specializes in the protection and promotion of self-reliance, resilience, accountability and exuberance in children and she is our fearless leader in this new endeavor. Each week, Dr. Wendy sits down with a different set of parents for a therapy session. She brings her forty years of experience working with families to these intimate and wonderfully voyeuristic conversations. This podcast allows the listener to go on another family's journey and to receive practical advice along the way. Wendy proves that, perhaps counterintuitively, there is nothing more universal than our specificity. In each episode, Wendy also introduces us to a foreign word that is untranslatable into English in order to enhance our minds and vocabularies on parenthood, family and communication with those we love the most.
Bilingual Parenting Podcast Cultivate and celebrate bilingualism with the Bilingual Parenting Podcast, presented by Bilingüitos and hosted by Kaila Diaz. We exist to encourage and equip families who desire to give the gift of bilingualism to their children.

What is the Rule of Law and why is it important? It sounds right that the law should be applied equally to everyone – but what does this mean and what does it need to work properly? Alma- Constance and Lucinda ask Abiodun Michael Olatokun, trustee at the Law for Life Organization, past head of public and youth engagement, diversity officer and research leader for the citizen and rule of law at the Bingham Center and who is currently undertaking traineeship at Matrix Chambers to be a barrister. He tells us:·      what the rule of law means ·      why it needs access to justice, fair courts, and an independent judiciary·      the connection with human rights and international rule of law·      who is responsible for upholding the rule of law ·      How the rule of law can be improved Abiodun says that when he was 10 years old, he loved reading, was really fascinated by the idea of different worlds and why people in power make the decisions that they do. References and Resources@ab1odunhttps://abiodunolatokun.com/@LfL_Advicenowhttps://publiclawproject.org.uk@BinghamCentre  https://binghamcentre.biicl.org/projects/citizenship-and-the-rule-of-law-massive-open-online-course-moochttps://www.citizensuk.org/about-us/https://www.coe.int/en/web/european-youth-foundation/council-of-europe-publications

What if you were not in a rush to lose weight? Amber Sandberg: 335 What if you lost weight in a sustainable way that took a little bit longer?

Today I am going to be talking about allowing yourself the time to really figure out how to lose weight so that you can keep it off.  Do you find that you are constantly in the swinging pendulum motion of going from restrictive dieting to saying screw it and eat whatever you want when you want?  What if we looked deeper to why you are eating and what caused the weight gain to begin with?  What if I could encourage you to eat in a way that nourished and healed your body vs. just trying to do whatever it takes to get the scale to go down even if that is not the best for your mental health.  Hear what I have to say about this topic and more on the podcast.

Do you feel stuck, do you want to leave counting calories and dieting behind?  Do you feel you like you can achieve so much in life but your weight loss? Do you feel like you spend so much energy thinking about how to lose weight, what to eat, and if you can even keep the weight off once you get to goal? I know for me that was the case before 2019 when I lost over 50lbs and kept it off and I want to help you lose weight the way that I did! I want to help you figure out why the weight is a symptom for something else going in your life, cause did you know, that weight gain is not usually based off of hunger issues, its not being fulfilled in other areas of life so we go for food for a quick dopamine hit or a quick fix. So, if you want to figure out how live life without worrying about what you are going to eat at the party, when you are on vacation and when you are staying in other people's homes without gaining weight then this session is for you.

How it works is you jump on a 30 min. mini coaching session with me, we come up with a plan right then and there so you can implement it the moment we get off our zoom call. If you decide that you want to work that plan with me and have that weekly accountability for several months and dive deep to figure out what is really holding you back we can do that too. But there is no pressure to do that, if you just want to jump on and chat with me and get a plan to get you started that is perfect. These mini coaching sessions are my way to give back to you guys, so I hope you take advantage of it.

Don't Reinvent the Wheel Slow Living Podcast with Host Stephanie O'Dea Episode 80 – Don't Reinvent the WheelOverview I love helping listeners embark upon their own journey to Slow Down, and live the life they’ve always dreamt about: one filled with peace, purpose, and abundance.I understand how you’re feeling when you are rushing around trying to do “all the things,” always playing catch up and finding time to get things done.I know because I’m a mom too. It’s okay to stop and breathe. My philosophy isn’t about cramming more and more into an already over-packed schedule, instead I offer realistic tips and plans to get things done quickly and efficiently so you can do things you want to do.Show Links Simple Shortcuts to Peace – https://stephanieodea.com/peaceNew You – https://stephanieodea.com/newyouMasterclass – https://stephanieodea.com/masterclass/Simple Shortcuts to Peace – https://stephanieodea.com/peace/Website – https://stephanieodea.comBlog – https://stephanieodea.com/blog/Podcast Page – https://stephanieodea.com/podcastSpeaking Opportunities – https://stephanieodea.com/speaking/Coaching Opportunities – https://stephanieodea.com/coaching/Courses – https://stephanieodea.com/courses/Contact – stephanieodea.com/contact/Stephanie's Story I know what it feels like to want to live a calm, peaceful, and harmonious life but you feel like you can’t because there is simply too much to do. I believe that if we are lucky, life is long. You are not behind, and you don’t need to rush around, trying to catch up. My philosophy isn’t about cramming more and more into an already over-packed schedule.Instead, I want to you to stop. Breathe. It’s all going to be okay.I want you to live out the life you’ve always dreamt about — the one that gets you excited to get up in the morning and puts a goofy grin on your face.Because the laundry, chores, soccer practice, meal planning, and litter box scooping? 157: Overcoming Burnout and Guilt with Andryanna Gonko As a parent, I know how challenging it can be to juggle the many responsibilities that come with caring for our children, partners, and ourselves. As you may remember, recently I've been struggling with health issues and burnout, and it has been a really difficult journey. I've come to realize that many other parents are experiencing similar struggles, and it's time we have a compassionate conversation about it.

That's why I'm excited to share my latest podcast episode where I speak with Andryanna of The Juggle is Real podcast (where I was a guest recently!) about burnout and how it affects our mental health and relationships with loved ones. We delve into the topic of mom guilt and the pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect parents, often at the expense of our own well-being.

If you're looking for more support on these issues, I also offer online courses and group coaching through my BalancingU membership. You'll have access to a community of like-minded parents and resources that can help you find more balance and compassion in your life.

Thank you for taking the time to read this message, and I hope our podcast episode can bring you some comfort and support during challenging times.

To know more about Andryanna, visit her website andryanna.com and follow her on Instagram @andryannag.For more show notes, visit www.laurafroyen.com/podcast.

The Nashville School Shooting – Grief, Guilt & Gratitude Our community was rocked by tragedy last week… a shooter opened fire at Covenant School in Nashville, killing 6 people, and leaving us feeling devastated and frustrated and incredibly sad. We are all left shaken, and wanting to take real action amidst the immobilizing divisiveness we see all around us. While our listeners and viewers know that the 3 of us have very different views on politics, religion, parenting, etc… there is only one SIDE for us here – the side of keeping our children safe. We are the MOMS, and we wanted to have an honest conversation about the terror we felt that day, the anxiety we're left with, how we're talking to our children about what happened, the hours we're spending figuring out what our routes to change look like, and how we can make some noise to incite that change. Our hearts are breaking for the families of William Kinney, Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, Katherine Koonce, Mike Hill and Cynthia Peak, and the many other families affected by these horrific events. If you'd like to get involved, here is a list from Nashville Lifestyles with many ways to support our community.  Over the coming weeks, we will continue to share the ways we're taking action for change. We love you, moms…

Episode 129: From no sleep to plentiful sleep with Maru Rojas In this episode, I talk with Maru Rojas, an Aware Parenting instructor in the UK who shares about her very different experience with sleep with her first child and second child. The first time around, her baby was very restless all night long or was feeding for most of the night and she had very little sleep. She learnt about Aware Parenting and gradually, sleep changed. The second time around, she started with Aware Parenting from the beginning and her son slept peacefully and for much longer periods. She talked about the time it took to support her daughter to 'catch up' with expressing feelings that had been repressed, the trauma she experienced of having so little sleep, and how she called for help from her mum to support her with listening to feelings with her second child. She also offers parents the invitation to listen in deeply to themselves and to create a sleep set-up that works for their unique family. We also talk about the relief of not needing to try to get babies to sleep quickly, why there's no such thing as 'overtired' in Aware Parenting, and the ease of babies sleeping peacefully when there's noise around or we need to move them whilst they're sleeping.

Maru also specialises in Elimination Communication and potty learning. She offers 1-1 consultations, an online mothers' circle and online courses. You can find out more about her and her work at: https://parenttogether.co.uk/ and on social media at https://www.instagram.com/_maru.rojas_/
Episode 130: From exhaustion to restful sleep with Helena Mooney In this episode, I talk with my dear friend and colleague, Helena Mooney, who is an Aware Parenting instructor and Hand in Hand instructor. She shares about her experience of starting off with Classical Attachment Parenting with her daughter, and how little sleep she had, and how exhausted she was. She shares about how weird she found Aware Parenting at first, and her unsureness in practicing it at the beginning, and how different it was from Classical Attachment Parenting.

Then she talks about how that perception changed as she saw what a difference it made to her daughter's sleep. The change took a bit of a while because her daughter had a backlog of feelings, and she explains this process. Along with getting more sleep again, her daughter also stopped hitting once she started Aware Parenting. She then goes on to share about what a huge difference she experienced with her second child and sleep, starting practicing Aware Parenting at the beginning; she expresses the difference in sleep between the two of them being "night and day."

Episode 131: Trusting babies and children in relation to sleep In this episode, I talk about how Aware Parenting's overall approach to trusting babies and children in relation to everything also applies to sleep.

That instead of them fighting sleep, we are often fighting their natural relaxation processes.

And hat these natural processes are the same as those innate ways that they heal from stress and trauma.

And the most important thing in supporting sleep is freeing ourselves from our cultural conditioning around sleep, our adultism, and doing our own healing in relation to sleep, including in our own infancy and childhood.

Episode 132: Baby sleep with Sarah Mason In this episode of The Aware Parenting Podcast, I talk with Sarah Mason, an Aware Parenting instructor and mother of an almost three year old. She shares the journey of Aware Parenting that she's been on and all the intricacies of Aware Parenting and sleep that she's learnt along the way. She talks about all the things she tried with sleep before learning about Aware Parenting, including a dummy and a sleep consultant, and all the differences she observed with each approach, including Aware Parenting. She also shares about what happened when they went camping, and the shifts that happened in sleep over time with each step in the practice.

You can find out more about Sarah's work at https://awaremum.com.au/ and https://www.instagram.com/awaremum/
Episode 133: Parents as researchers In this episode, I share about how parents can be the researchers with Aware Parenting. I invite a process where you first listen in to whether something resonates with you, and if it does, then to experiment and to observe your baby or child. I share about all the things you can observe to see if what you are doing is helpful for them or not. And if something is happening that is different, then there's an invitation to pause, to find out new information about what might be going on, to listen in again to yourself about whether this resonates and to see if you want to continue experimenting and observing.

If you want to sign up for my newsletter, you can do that at: http://eepurl.com/8ifhn or you can find out how to on my website at: www.marionrose.net

Powerful Tips to Improve Your Mental Health |Tina Hallock & Serena Ward We ALL need to take care of our mental health. Tina Hallock and Serena Ward are on a mission to normalize the conversation around mental health.
Mental health is a critical aspect of our overall well-being and should be given attention for several reasons.
Our home is where we spend a significant amount of our time, and it can have a considerable impact on our mental health. Creating a supportive and nurturing environment at home can help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, and promote positive mental health.
Tina, although trained as a teacher, has held many odd jobs as she and her family have traipsed across the US. No job has taught her more in the last 26 years than being a mama to her children. She is a dog lover, a knitter and crusader to normalize mental health.
While Serena has worked in a variety of different roles over the years, the one that she is most proud of is that of mama to three beautiful girls. All other credentials aside, it is the experience of knowing what it’s like to have a child who struggles, that she brings to her work as a Mental Health Mama. In addition, she is a believer in the goodness of humanity and a champion of hope.
Mental Health Mamas Tina and Serena with Dr. Karin Jakubowski discuss how family members and loved ones can play a crucial role in supporting each other's mental health. By fostering open communication, empathy, and understanding at home, we can create a safe and supportive space where we can share our thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment or stigma.

Ep 236: Navigating the Tween Years Tallo is a digital portfolio platform where your teen can apply for scholarships, internships, and opportunities. Check them out at tallo.com/talkingtoteens Visit our website, talkingtoteens.com, to sign up for our newsletter so you'll never miss an episode! It can be jarring to raise a tween. One day they are our cuddly kids, and the next day they seem to want nothing to do with us! They start saying our jokes are lame, our style is dated, and we just “don’t get it.” The tween years can be a contentious time for both parents and tweens. Our kids are taking the first steps into adulthood, and as scary as it might be for parents, for tweens it might feel awkward, uncomfortable, and lonely. Their bodies are changing and so are their brains. Tweens, in addition to developing more complex thinking, start experimenting with who they are. Hence why they might seem wildly different month to month, day to day, hour to hour! Tweens might argue more as the desire for autonomy peaks, and they might even practice lying. But it’s also an incredible experience for parents: they are witness to the extraordinary process of a young person figuring out who they are in the world. To help us untangle the confounding changes happening in the tween years, we’re joined by Michelle Mitchell, author of the new book Tweens: What Kids Need Now, Before the Teenage Years. Michelle Mitchell is an educator, author, and award-winning speaker who has conducted extensive research, surveying over 1,600 parents and 600 tweens, for her latest book. (We’ve spoken with her a few times before on the show about self harm and puberty.)In our conversation, Michelle walks me through the transition in tweens thinking, as well as how to talk to tweens about their emotions, confidence, same sex attraction, technology, body image, and lying. We will also explore how tweens and parents think differently about friends, plus the differences between concrete and complex thinking in tweens and how to support tweens in their cognitive development. Spiking AutonomyThe tween years for most kids are defined by a heightened desire for autonomy which might show up as more arguments, more omissions, and a general pull away from family life and toward other social groups. Fortunately, the need for autonomy peaks around age fourteen—it won’t last forever, and by keeping lines of communication with our tweens open, we can lessen the growing pains of autonomy. Michelle offers some insights she gleaned during research for the book to ease tensions caused by heightened need for autonomy. Michelle reminds us tweens are still looking for guidance from adults, but they might feel awkward about asking us. Just because a tween doesn’t ask their parents questions, doesn’t mean they don’t have any!Michelle shares with us the most commonly asked questions from tweens in conversations about puberty and sex—two topics the tweens she spoke with felt most uncomfortable about. Many tweens feel awkward about topics related to their own developing bodies. In knowing ahead of time what questions our tweens might have, parents can be prepared to bring up the topics if their teen doesn’t. At the same time, tweens will inevitably ask questions that parents might find awkward, basic, or uncomfortable. It's important to approach our curious tweens with compassion. Kids need to be taken seriously and given room to ask their questions free from judgment. Otherwise, parents risk sending the message that they can only handle certain topics of conversation. Keeping Communication FlowingThe tween years are full of experimentation with who one is and, let’s face it, a lot of self-consciousness! This increased wariness about others’ opinions, could mean teens share less with their parents for fear of being judged. And clamming up and self-isolating for people in general, but particularly with tweens, can lead to mental health issues beyond normal feelings of loneliness, anxiety, or sadness. If a tween comes to us with a big emotional claim, Michelle emphasizes the importance of validating tweens’ emotions. Even when a tween’s feelings seem out of proportion, validating and then seeking to understand how they’re feeling proves you can be trusted to listen without judgment. (Moreover, this approach helps tweens build their confidence in their own abilities to handle their emotions.)Michelle additionally emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment to encourage tweens’ exploration of who they are
Ep 237: Visible and Invisible Differences Tallo is a digital portfolio platform where your teen can apply for scholarships, internships, and opportunities. Check them out at tallo.com/talkingtoteens Visit our website, talkingtoteens.com, to sign up for our newsletter so you'll never miss an episode! Many parents want their teens to be compassionate citizens who care about people of all kinds. Others might Yet, it can be difficult to advise our teen on how to interact with people who are visibly different from us. We know people with differences are just as capable as anyone, yet sometimes it’s hard not to focus on the difference until that is all there is. We know there is more to someone than their difference—but how do we do better? To help us understand how to speak with our teens about differences, we spoke with Meg Zucker, author of the new book Born Extraordinary: Empowering Children with Differences and Disabilities. Meg is the founder and president of Don't Hide It, Flaunt It, a nonprofit with the mission of advancing understanding and mutual respect for people's differences. She was born with a genetic condition called ectrodactyly, and has one finger on each hand, shortened forearms and one toe on each misshapen foot. Her two sons have the same condition and her adopted daughter has her own invisible differences. Meg, through parenting with her husband, running her non-profit, her own experiences, and in researching for her book, has become an expert in all things differences—visible and invisible. She offers new insights into sticking points for people with differences and how everyone can think differently about differences.  The Urge to HelpMeg explains that, above all, we should keep in mind people with differences are people. People with differences are usually just as capable as ourselves, and often have already figured out how to navigate the world with their differences. She often has to field strangers asking if she needs help doing normal, everyday activities, like putting groceries in her cart, zipping up her coat, or opening doors. Meg wants others to know people with differences may struggle navigating certain aspects of life, but that they have a sense of pride to do it themselves, just like we do. Questioning “What should I do?” suggests we have to do something at all. Meg says this isn’t the best way to go about it. Sometimes the notion we have to do something, is to soothe our own feelings of discomfort or awkwardness about someone’s difference. The best way to interact with someone who has a difference is to first treat them as you would any person. Next, follow their lead. People with differences (or, all people for that matter) are living in their own version of normal, and so, they don't expect anyone to do anything. People living with differences aren’t constantly thinking about their differences—it’s not on their minds. Meg offers this advice for helping someone with a difference: observe first. It might seem a little creepy, but often after a moment, the person struggling will often figure it out. Take a breath before you are, what Meg labels a “Mighty Mouse” and say ask yourself, "Let me see if that person actually needs it." Usually, a person is ready for help when they start looking around for help. We can speak with our teens about this exact situation, and offer them Meg’s simple guidance for helping people with differences. The Pitfalls of Rules on How to Treat PeopleAt the same time, Meg encourages parents not to make ordinances about how to treat people with differences.  When parents give their teens orders about how to treat others with differences, it takes away their inherent drive to be kind to others. Instead of a “could,” being kind becomes a “should,” and teens may resent being kind because it is not out of their own volition. And people on the receiving end of obligatory kindness don’t want to be resented. As an example of what she means, Meg shares a story about her son who was feeling down after his soccer teammates didn’t slap his hand after a game. He told his mom he believed the cause was how his hand looked. “They didn’t want to touch me,” he lamented. As heartbreaking as it was, Meg helped her son to see it in a different way. There could be many reasons why the other kids hesitated to slap his hand. Maybe they thought it would hurt him, or they didn’t want to draw attention to it, or they were just surprised. She suggested he make a game of it, and see how many slaps he got after the second game. Sure enough, her son exchanged some hand slaps with about half of his teammates after the next game, and varying numbers the res

You'll feel seen, validated, and encouraged, mama! Tune in every Wednesday for raw, real, and authentic conversations from two mamas that are best friends raising their littles the best they can while living off a whole lot of grace and coffee (with an occasional splash of wine… or a big pour). How Do We Respond When Evil Knocks At The Door? Rach and Bree start with some levity, but focus on the horrific event that recently occurred in Nashville. They create space to process what has happened and make room for however you're feeling or thinking while normalizing and validating it may look the same or different from others. Their message is one of hope- God has won the battle.. as believers we know how the story ends, God restores all making beauty from ashes- "he takes what the enemy meant for evil, and turns it for good", and God is near the brokenhearted- we are not left alone to walk through this life without Him… He is by our side, His angels out number demons 2-1, He is always with us. There are no words for what occurred last Monday- the murdering of innocents solely for their beliefs in Christianity, the direct attack against Christians, and the intentional hunting of believers regardless of age. We grieve alongside those impacted, we mourn with those moms who lost their babies, we are thankful for those who sprung into action to stop the continued murdering and we pray for everyone impacted- directly or indirectly- as we pick up the pieces and ask the questions "where do we go from here? how do we respond to evil? what is the best for my family in the aftermath of this horrific event?"Mamas, we are praying for you, with you and over your families. We love you.Tune in every Wednesday for raw, real, and authentic conversations from two mamas that are best friends raising their littles the best they can while living off a whole lot of grace and coffee (with an occasional splash of wine… or a big pour). 39: Underage sex: the parenting dilemma. Most first world countries agree that the age of consent is around sixteen, but teenagers don't suddenly awake to their sexuality on their sixteenth birthday. Sexual feelings and interest can start much younger, well before they’re able to understand the implications. One mother has asked us to talk about the issue, because she's struggling to find useful content.  Knowing the law helps guide us as parents, but it doesn't exactly stop teens from vaping and drinking if they want to, so we have to be prepared to consider how to deal with underage interest in sex. Gone are the days when most people held back until marriage, and with the advent of free internet porn and social media there's a chance that our teens may know more about sex than we do. So what should we be saying to them, how do we keep them safe, and how can we help them to know when they're ready for that next adventure in life? THE BLOG POST WITH KEY POINTS:https://www.teenagersuntangled.com/blog/it-might-be-illegal-but-when-did-that-ever-stop-a-teenager/HELPFUL WEBSITES:https://www.culturereframed.org/ RESEARCH SOURCES:https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/when-is-person-ready-start-having-sexhttps://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/720822https://oxfordshirescb.proceduresonline.com/p_underage_sexual_act.htmlwww.unchainedatlast.org https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5546176/https://www.npr.org/2023/01/08/1147737247/teen-pregnancy-rates-have-declined-significantlyhttps://courses.lumenlearning.com/adolescent/chapter/sexual-development/https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/amp/entry/no-sex-please-we-re-your-parents-would-you-let-your-teen-have-sex-under-your-roof_n_7389178/https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5546176/https://courses.lumenlearning.com/adolescent/chapter/sexual-development/Thanks for listening. Minimalism and Our Relationships (With the Other People Who Bring Stuff into our Homes) Today I'm bringing you a mindset shift that I hope will help ease the stress we might feel when other people we have close relationships with or who even live in our homes don't see eye to eye with our minimal-ish lifestyle. How do we choose intentionality with our stuff when it isn't us bringing the stuff into our homes? How do we have conversations with family members who love to bless our kids with plenty of gifts? Sometimes, trying to control it all can cause more stress than having that extra item in our homes. We talk about a mindset shift that might help along with some action steps we can take to deal with the influx of stuff that might come from the people we love.Sponsors:Green pan: Get 30% off your order and free shipping over $99 at greenpan.us with code MINIMALISHIndeed: Start hiring now at indeed.com/minimalish Learn more about your ad choices. Discussing the Black Maternal Mortality Crises with 4Kira4Moms Founder, Charles Johnson In this episode of The Mommy Labor Nurse Podcast, I am joined by Charles Johnson, the founder of 4Kira4Moms.  Charles tragically lost his wife Kira during a routine C-section at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, California in 2016. This experience led him to create 4Kira4moms in 2017. The goal of 4Kira4Moms is to be a voice for other mothers and families facing unnecessary maternal loss and to help put an end to the black maternal mortality health crisis. It is a sad reality that in the US, black women are four times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth than white women. This is due to implicit bias and systemic racism within the healthcare system, as well as a lack of access to high-quality maternal healthcare and resources. Inside the episode, Charles and I discuss this tragic epidemic and talk about what platforms like 4Kira4Moms are doing to spark change and shed light on the issue. Then we get into what we can do to support his mission! Tune in to hear Kira's story and learn how you can help make a difference. Learn more about Charles Johnson Charles Johnson has dedicated his life to the pursuit of what his own family failed to receive – safe, respectful, and equitable maternal health outcomes in America. His passion for systemic change is driven by his love for his wife, Kira, who passed away following the birth of their second child. In April 2016, Kira underwent a routine C-section following an uncomplicated pregnancy. Hours later, she died from internal hemorrhaging despite adamant pleas for help from medical professionals by her husband and loved ones. Her story exemplifies the current crises happening in America: rising rates of maternal mortality and the silencing of Black voices. After experiencing the unimaginable, Charles harnessed his pain and used it to pursue the highest level of good. He channeled his grief into founding 4Kira4Moms, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving birth outcomes in America. Charles knows childbirth should be empowering and free of fear for all mothers. 4Kira4Moms advocates for improved maternal health policies and regulations, educates about the impact of maternal mortality in our communities, provides support to victims’ loved ones, and approaches maternal mortality as a human rights issue. Mothers are the very framework of our society. They teach us how to love unconditionally and are willing to protect the most vulnerable among us. The loss of even one at the hands of an unjust system robs our country of what it needs most. Charles has used his voice and story to advocate for change at countless events and media appearances all over the country. He is a board member of March for Moms and serves as Chairman of the Fairness of Injured Patients Act, which seeks to restore the rights of victims of medical negligence in California. Charles has testified twice before Congress and helped pass key legislation including: the Preventing Maternal Death Act of 2018, the Protecting Moms Who Served Act of 2021, and the California Momnibus. He is currently working with Congress to pass the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, an unprecedented set of bills addressing every aspect of the maternal health crisis happening in America. Charles was also honored by Oprah Winfrey on OWNSpotlight’s 2020 fatherhood special entitled, “Honoring our Kings – Celebrating Black Fatherhood.” In addition to his advocacy work, Charles is busy raising his two beautiful boys, Charles V and Langston, who keep their mothers’ spirit alive powerfully every day. SPECIAL: What is FLOW365? You’ve probably heard me reference FLOW365 or FLOW365ers on the show. This is our community for women balancing BUSINESS, MOTHERHOOD (often kids are in the teen and young adult phases), and changing BODIES (because we are no longer in 30-year old bodies). “There's something about the women that are drawn to this group that show up here. It's a level of support that I've never experienced before.” We get these kinds of comments regularly, so I finally pressed record and made an episode that talks about FLOW365, who it's for, and how it makes a difference… In case you are tempted. https://plansimple.com/flow365
The Saboteur with Jackie Meek “You need to build the muscles in order to strengthen your sage so that it's there ready with a bit of a louder voice than the saboteur voice.” –Jackie MeekWhat if your mind served you … instead of working against you? I’m really excited to talk with Jackie Meek about getting off the roller coaster of “the mom juggle.” Our brain OFTEN defaults to the negative, but we can learn to choose how to respond (or not respond) to things. We talk about the saboteurs of our brain, including the pleaser saboteur. While it can help us stay safe, we can overdo “people pleasing.” When you start to feel resentful that nobody else is helping. When you say yes when you mean no and you've overcommitted, that’s the saboteur pushing you to do things that are not in your best interest under the guise of keeping us safe.In addition to saboteurs, we have sages in our brain. Jackie shows us how to up our positive quotient or the amount of time that you are using your sage muscles as opposed to your saboteur muscles in the brain. We talk about: What happens when we put our expectations on other peopleFocusing on your five senses and a secret tool for dealing with triggers to press pause before you respondBuilding your sage muscles throughout the day, so that voice is louder than your saboteursAsking the question: What would my wiser elder self do? FFP58: How is Nick Camilleri using his experiences to develop elite baseball players? How is Nick Camilleri using his experiences to develop elite baseball players?I have spent more than 30 years around the game of baseball as a player, coach, and fan. I’m comfortable in saying that anyone who has ever played at a high level falls in love with the game. However, not every good player can be a good coach. Coaching baseball takes empathy and patience in addition to having knowledge of the game.My guest in this episode, Nick Camilleri, is the owner of Camilleri Baseball in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Nick is a former college baseball player who has made coaching rising baseball players his life’s work.In Episode 58, Nick shares about his own experiences finding the right fit as a college baseball player and how he has used those experiences to mentor young players hoping to reach the same level. So, what’s your biggest takeaway from my conversation with Nick Camilleri? My biggest takeaway is that being a good coach isn’t just about knowledge of your sport. It’s about being able to apply that knowledge to the needs of the athletes that you are coaching. Further, coaches don’t need years of experience to be good at their job if they have the right perspective. My suggestion to coaches is use your playing experiences to best serve your players, but not make it about you. This is very challenging for many coaches, including myself. However, if the intention is to serve the athlete, then they will get better.I want to thank Nick for his kind generosity and the wisdom he shared with The Freshman Foundation Community. You can learn more about Nick at https://www.camilleri-baseball.com/.To learn how mental performance coaching can help your mind work FOR you rather than against you, visit https://michaelvhuber.com.Thank you for listening. We’ll see you back soon for Episode 59!
