Food Safety: Understanding the Risks and Making Informed Choices The health and safety of you and your baby are a top priority. Certain foods come with risks, and you need to know what to avoid and how to make informed choices. It is easy to pull up a long list online of foods to avoid during pregnancy. It may be challenging to cut these items out of your diet. Especially if there is something on this list that you consume regularly or really enjoy. Rather than tell you to avoid something, let’s unpack the concerns over why you should be cautious with particular foods so you can understand the risks. Plus, there are some foods that don’t typically appear on the do not eat list that you may want to be mindful of. 138: When our world fell apart with Betty Merten Betty Mertens is mother to three children. Her oldest daughter, Ella passed away at the age of one in 2017 due to an undiagnosed heart defect. As you can only imagine this experience changed the course of their lives completely. After being told that this type of tragedy rips marriages apart. Betty said, "I hope our daughter's legacy doesn't rip us apart so we are going to figure this out."
Inside this episode you will learn:

How losing Ella saved her husband's life.
What they did to keep their marriage together.
How they are supporting and helping others through grief
To find the positive … the glimmer of light in the darkness

She and her husband Kyle realized that they had a unique ability to support others through grief. Since then, they have taken what they learned from their experience and are using it to help others.
"I would encourage others to write things down and know that when you're walking through something awful, it is sort of equipping you to show up for other people down the road. If that's the only Silver Lining you can find from it, count it. The reality is you're going through something which has now expanded your frame of reference." ~~ Betty Mertens
**Betty and I will continue our conversation in the next episode. We will talk more about her being a speaker, author, and co-founder of the non-profit Ella's Umbrella.

137: Choosing between Adoption, Foster Care or Surrogacy with David and Victoria Schmoll David and Victoria talked and planned to have a family. Less than a year after they were married, Victoria started to have some weird illnesses. After lots of tests they found that it was all related to a weak heart valve that she was born with. She went through antibiotic therapy for the infections and thought she was in the clear. Open heart surgery was performed in November 2020.
They were then told, due to the strain on her heart, the mechanic heart valve, and the medication she was taking to keep the valve functioning, pregnancy was not an option for them.
Inside this episode, you will learn:

How they handled being told that Victoria should not carry children.
The thoughts they had in deciding between Adoption, Foster to adopt and surrogacy.
How the original thoughts changed as Victoria did extensive research.
About them picking the right Surrogacy Agency for them.
Being part of the pregnancy through text, Facetime and Zoom.

David and Victoria talked about meeting the gestational carrier in person the day before transfer day and I could feel the emotion in their voices. And gave several amazingly thoughtful things that she has done for them. David and Victoria's little girl is due in July of 2023.

"Throughout the process I realized that it's not going to become normalized and more mainstream in less people like myself talk about it." ~~ Victoria Schmoll
"The one thing that we have to keep reminding ourselves is, that there are a lot of things that we are missing and we look at some of the positives and one of those is that we knew that we were having a girl three weeks in when most people don't even know they’re pregnant." ~~ David Schmoll

What Every Mother Needs to Know About Hypertension During and After Pregnancy Many changes during pregnancy affect your cardiovascular system, which includes your heart and blood vessels. While some changes in blood pressure are normal during pregnancy, hypertensive disorders are among the leading causes of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide.   Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy include chronic hypertension, gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, HELLP, and eclampsia. High blood pressure during pregnancy can stress your heart and kidneys, leading to heart disease, kidney disease, and stroke. As well as increase your risk for preterm birth, placental abruption, and cesarean birth. High blood pressure can also reduce blood flow to the placenta, affecting the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your baby. You can see why your care provider closely monitors your blood pressure throughout your pregnancy.   The majority of pregnancy-related conditions disappear after you have your baby. Mothers remain at risk for hypertensive disorders after they have their baby, even if they have no symptoms during pregnancy. Your ability to recognize warning signs and promptly seek medical attention can potentially be life-saving.   Thank you to our sponsors   Did you know that your health insurance will cover the cost of a breast pump? It’s true! In fact, many health insurance plans also cover milk storage bags, breastfeeding prep courses, and more. At Aeroflow Breastpumps, you can shop top-rated breast pumps from brands like Medela, Spectra, and Motif without ever opening your wallet. Fill out their quick and easy insurance eligibility form, and they’ll take care of the rest! It might just be the easiest thing you do this pregnancy.   Zahler goes above and beyond to use high-quality bioavailable ingredients like the active form of folate, bioavailable iron, and omega 3s. 197. Grief, Faith, & Growing Your Family After A Life-Limiting Diagnosis with Monica Harris "When God doesn't give a miracle…" Monica Harris joins me for this episode to share her motherhood journey and her experience receiving a life-limiting diagnosis for her son Vance as well as the news that she and her husband were carriers for a genetic condition that could result in a similar diagnosis in future children. At the time of our recording Monica was 37 weeks pregnant with a daughter who was also given a difficult diagnosis – prayerfully not a diagnosis that would limit life but difficult and complex nonetheless. Knowing this makes my time with Monica and her words that much more powerful – when she talks about what it looked like to pray for a miracle and for God to not give that miracle– about this she says: “He's good God, but He's not always going to say yes.” and we talked about her pregnancy right now, she said this: “I like to be in control, but this time I have no control. Just praying and believing that God will take us through whatever comes.”  We spend some time talking about: what it was like to receive that life-limiting diagnosis for her son Vance how to navigate when the plan you have for your family doesn’t turn out the way you had ever imagined navigating a pregnancy after loss navigating the medical aspect to a life-limiting diagnosis and high risk pregnancy after loss friendships after loss what she wishes others knew about grief and how to help a mom who is grieving.  This is a beautifully tender and honest interview with a mom who is still in a season of waiting, of anticipating, of navigating the unknown but her faith will encourage you – I know it encouraged me. 198. Infertility, Loss & Lament with MaryEsther Caldwell Listen in to hear an honest conversation about infertility, loss, and lament from MaryEsther Caldwell. During our time together MaryEsther shares honestly about what it was like to navigate infertility, and then to experience a miraculous pregnancy only to unexpectedly lose her daughter Magnolia Jubilee at 22 weeks. We talk about the challenges of grief and what surprised her and what she wished others understood about infertility and loss and the grief of both. About this she says: “I am just aware on a really deep level that I may never be pregnant again. I have to really deal with the question of, is God good if I never have any more children? If I never get to raise and mother a child here, is God still good? And I think the harder question for me actually is, will my life still be meaningful? Will I still have any joy in my life if this doesn't happen?” Then we spend some time talking about what it means to lament, what is lament, what she means by ‘grief visibility’ in the church and how we can do better serving those who are grieving within the space of corporate worship.  Lastly, we talk about friendships after loss and what it looked like for her to navigate friendship and wisdom she has for those who are newly grieving navigating that aspect of life after loss. About this she says: “friendship has always been really important to me. I think through this, especially in the beginning and even a little now, it's been really hard for me to go from being the person who was always there for other people, to a person who desperately needed to rely on others.”  Resources for Lament MaryEsther had a few really helpful resource recommendations for us on this topic of lament in our grief and we have included links to all those in the show notes — find those here: Show Notes     THIS EPISODE IS IN MEMORY OF ELIANA GRACE.  This episode is sponsored in honor of Eliana Grace. 262: Impacts of High Functioning, Severe Postpartum Anxiety and Depression My guest today shares her personal story of severe postpartum anxiety and depression while appearing in a high-functioning state to those around her. It is important for us to hear real-life accounts from those who look like “everything is fine.” Join us for a closer look from this unique perspective.Caitlin Shadek is a mom of three boys, ages 3, 6, and 8. She is a lawyer who has practiced as a commercial litigator for the past 14 years, but she recently left her job to attend Rutgers University School of Social Work to obtain her master’s degree in social work. Her desire is to work with women with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and help bridge the gap in their care between the OB/GYN and the pediatrician. Caitlin felt that lapse in care firsthand when she suffered from severe postpartum depression and anxiety after her first two pregnancies and entered a hospital treatment program when her third son was a toddler. Her own experiences have been the impetus behind her career change and desire to help treat and advocate for better women’s mental health care. She is currently an intern at a practice specializing in infertility and prenatal/postnatal counseling. Show Highlights:
How Caitlin’s story begins about nine years ago with her first pregnancy and the immediate feelings of dread and panic she felt at the moment of birth
Why she was afraid to go home from the hospital with her new baby
How wearing a catheter for six weeks added to the anxiety she felt about caring for her baby
How dark thoughts plagued her–but she never shared them with anyone and pretended that everything was fine
How she began therapy and medication when her son was about nine months old, but the dark thoughts and depression continued
Why she wanted a second child–despite the serious issues in her life (including self-harming behaviors)
How she felt guilt about continuing her medication while pregnant and experienced postpartum depression AGAIN
How Caitlin went back to work and put on her “high-functioning postpartum depression face”
How her struggles continued into her pregnancy with her third son, and things felt a little different after his birth
How the pandemic threw their family into survival mode with everyone at home together
Why Caitlin worked very hard to put on a good face until everything culminated in December 2021–and she knew she was NOT OK
How Caitlin’s therapist sent her to the ER during an intense COVID resurgence because of her depression and suicidal thoughts
Why Caitlin agreed to go to the psychiatric floor for treatment–and then tried to change her mind
How she was released to go home and enrolled in an outpatient DBT program that changed her life
How Caitlin decided what her next phase of work would be–to become a social worker and provide other mothers with the help she had needed
Why maternal mental health falls between the OB/GYN and pediatrician and is often overlooked
What Caitlin would say to someone in a similar situation

263: Coping Through Treatment-Resistant Postpartum Depression with Lynn Wilhite The message of today’s conversation is that postpartum depression and anxiety don’t always have simple, easy fixes. Medications, therapy, and other supports don’t help some as quickly as others. In these cases, suffering mothers need to know that they are not alone and that others are going through the same challenges that come with lingering depression. Today’s guest shares her story to bring awareness to this issue. Join us to learn more.As a social worker and mom of a three-year-old son, Lynn Wilhite suffers from postpartum depression. She has been struggling since pregnancy, with medications being unable to help her effectively thus far. She has created the Instagram page, My Journey with PPD, as a way of trying to reach other moms and partners with similar experiences. Lynn hopes to bring awareness to the fact that PMADs don’t always have an easy fix and loved ones need to support a mother for the duration of her journey.Show Highlights:
How Lynn’s PPD story began as she planned, with her psychiatrist, adjustments to her antidepressant and sleeping medications to prepare for her first pregnancy
How not sleeping for an extended period of time brought on her depressive episode
How her son’s birth went well, except for the NICU interventions brought on by her medications—and her first dose of “mom guilt” occurred
Where Lynn is today–three years postpartum and over 40 medications later
How her son had sensory processing disorders and needed several therapies, perpetuating her mom guilt
How Lynn tried multiple medications, trying to find something that worked
How suicidal ideations and problems in bonding with her son brought additional challenges
How Lynn experiences grief, even today, over her guilt and all the things that haven’t gone well in her motherhood journey
Why Lynn was hospitalized at two years postpartum after trying every medication available in different combinations
How a move to a different state left her with a gap in therapy and support
How a new medication is starting to lift the depression fog for Lynn and give her cautious optimism
What Lynn’s current therapy work is doing to help
What Lynn wants people to know and hear from her story

136: A miracle baby that our family didn’t know we needed with Jenn Cobbel Jenn Cobbel and her husband, a US Navy Seabees, struggled with secondary infertility. They had testing done which found nothing and three rounds of clomid. The military coverage of infertility treatment is very limited. After trying for 6 years, they decided to get rid of all the baby things, after saving them for 11 years.
Jenn had decided to start focusing on herself. She was ready to go in for breast reduction surgery when the surgeon informed her the surgery would be cancelled due to her being pregnant. SURPRISE!!
Secondary infertility plus military life topics:
·        After six years we were at peace with not having more children
·        We wanted our parents to have more grandchildren
·        Behind closed doors there was anger
·        Questioning WHY
·       Military life made it more difficult.

“Let yourself have hard days, if not it is like dropping a Mentos in a bottle of diet coke when you release the anger.
Let yourself have the bad days.” ~~ Jenn Cobbel

Ep199: Haley’s Birth Story – An Extremely Prepared Mom with an Extremely Fast Labor I am particularly delighted with Haley’s birth story! She was just about as prepared as you can be. Not only did she do childbirth education (including taking my birth prep course!) but she prepared physically. Before she and her husband even started trying she was taking vitamins, minding her physical fitness, and getting tests at the doctor. In this episode we literally laugh and cry. Her birth was relatively straight-forward. What makes this story so special is the joy you can hear in Haley’s voice when she talks about her birth experience and meeting her baby. Tune in for an interview that will remind you what makes birth beautiful. In this Episode, You’ll Learn About: -Why I call Haley “textbook” prepared -How knowledge made her feel empowered in her decisions -How she and her provider came to a compromise over induction -How she was able to instinctively tell when labor was starting -What her husband did to support her every step of the way -What her nurse did to advocate for Haley’s needs -Why her sister encouraged her to go to the ER four days after giving birth -How pelvic floor therapy helped her postpartum — Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode199 Check out The Birth Preparation Course Register for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right Way  Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Ep201: Everything You Wanted to Know About Twins with Perinatologist Dr. Nathan S. Fox Aren’t twins so fascinating? Today we have Dr. Nathan (Nate) Fox here to tell us all about them! He’s a maternal fetal medicine specialist, also known as a high-risk pregnancy doctor or a perinatologist, which is an OB/GYN that works with more complex pregnancies. The truth is a lot of doctors don’t have much training or experience with twins and as a result, you might not get the level of care you need or have all the birth options open to you. You want doctors on your team who know which screenings/tests to do, how often you should be seen, and what your nutrition should be like (it’s different for twins). You also want doctors who feel confident offering vaginal birth instead of just going straight to cesarean, which happens more than it should. Whether you are pregnant with twins or just want to learn more about twins, this episode is a must listen. In this Episode, You’ll Learn About:-What it means to be a maternal fetal medicine specialist-How common it is to have twins-What some of the risk factors are for having twins-What distinguishes different kinds of twins from each other-How the prenatal care for single babies and twins differ-What the models of care are for twins-Why you should consider seeing a specialist-How a high-risk doctor works with other perinatal care providers-What additional risks come with twin pregnancy-How perinatologists approach (the almost inevitable) early term twin birth-How much more important Dr. Fox says weight gain is in twin vs. singleton pregnancy –Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode201Check out The Birth Preparation CourseRegister for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right Way Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Melanoma in Pregnancy As the warmer months are approaching, many of you are getting ready for your baby moons or spring break trips with your families. If you're going to have some fun in the sun, don't forget your sunscreen!  We often forget that our skin takes a daily beating, even in cooler weather, but definitely as the weather warms up.  So we must be diligent in taking steps to protect our biggest organ– our skin. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer and one of the most common cancers diagnosed during pregnancy. Like most skin cancers, you can reduce your risk by using sunscreen daily, particularly when out and about on sunny days. But what happens if you're pregnant with a suspicious area on your skin that ends up being a melanoma? Check out this episode to learn more about melanomas, how they are treated and how pregnancy is safely navigated if it's diagnosed. You'll also find out more about melanomas and how it can affect your unborn baby. Download and listen now!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Vaginal Tears and Episiotomy: Prevention and Healing When your skin is stretching during birth, it can tear. It is common for first-time mothers to have some tearing during vaginal birth, and there is also the possibility that you could have an episiotomy, which is a surgical incision. The good news is that you can do some things to prevent this leading up to and during your labor and birth. I know this can sound scary, but it shouldn't be. The benefits of a vaginal delivery far outweigh the downside of a tear or an episiotomy. Remember that some women make it through a vaginal birth without tearing, so it is not unavoidable. If you do end up with a tear or incision, there is a lot you can do to make yourself more comfortable, give yourself some relief, and help your body heal afterward.     Thank you to our sponsors   15% off DockATot with the code PREGNANCYPODCAST. This condition is not compatible with life. They were given a couple weeks to decide whether to terminate the pregnancy or continue with the expectation that she could pass at any time. They were told if she made it to delivery, she could live a few minutes or a few hours. Sabrina said, " I could not make the decision to terminate her life, so we put it in God's hands, and we hoped to get some time with our daughter alive.

·      The next 4 months of pregnancy
·      Strangers asked if it was a boy or girl?
·      Co-workers that would just sit and cry with Sabrina.

·      Creating memories, mementos and ways to honor Collins life.
“Don't worry about making others uncomfortable when talking about your child. This is your life, and your child deserves to be talked about. Don't be scared to mention your baby.” ~~ Nick
“I learned that grief could look very different even with spouses. We both lost Collins and the path we went through was very different.” ~~ Sabrina

196. Grief, Faith, Hope & Pregnancy After 1st Trimester Losses with Lauren Hendricks In this episode I have the joy of hearing from Lauren Hendricks, a precious mama who shares her motherhood journey with me and her experience with two first trimester losses. Lauren shares what she wished others understood about a first trimester loss and we both get really honest about the most challenging aspect of this journey, the envy, jealousy and anger that can often follow loss; especially when it involves others getting pregnant and having babies. We talk honestly about what that looked like in each of our lives and if that is something that feels hard for you right now, I think this part of the conversation will encourage you.  Lauren also shares what she learned about navigating the medical aspect of loss after experiencing consecutive losses, and about the importance of having a medical provider you can trust. About this she says: “I just wish other women knew that it's okay to find a doctor that's good for you. The one who takes care of you and your unborn child is no small thing.” We also spend sometime talking about what it was like for her to try to conceive again after two losses and what her 3rd pregnancy was like. Throughout our time together Lauren weaves her experience with faith into the conversation and about this she says this: “I just couldn't grasp what the Lord was doing.” This conversation is tender and honest and I am sure that Lauren’s wisdom and encouragement will bring you hope today.   HELPFUL PREGNANCY AFTER LOSS / GROWING YOUR FAMILY AFTER LOSS RESOURCES: Free Pregnancy After Loss Community – it’s a private group and conversation within our main community where you can feel the freedom to have honest conversations about the unique journey that is pregnancy after loss. themorning.com/pal Free Download: 40 Verses for 40 Weeks – this download includes 1 verse to meditate on, pray, or memorize for every week of your pregnancy. themorning.com/pal All of our best and most helpful blog articles and podcast episodes about growing your family after loss into one place. themorning.com/pal   THIS EPISODE IS IN MEMORY OF  PHOEBE JOY LU.  This episode is sponsored in honor of  Phoebe Joy Lu.  A message from Amber Lu, Phoebe’s mom: “Honoring our sweet heart warrior Phoebe Joy Lu.  A radiant, joyful, and brave girl.  We love and miss you as we honor your first anniversary home in heaven.  Love, Mom and Dad” A special thank you to Amber Lu and family for sponsoring this episode. Why it is important to have an honest relationship with your doctor and your child’s doctor
How feeding challenges come up for a new baby as a very common issue and diagnosis
How a child’s diagnosis can lead to excessive worry, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts

Why parents should NOT try to “do it all” themselves but should accept help and delegate responsibilities to others
How a NICU experience can impact parents’ mental health (While in the NICU, don’t be afraid to ask for what you need!)
What the reality is in coping with a diagnosis and the stigma that follows in the “what’s next?” phase
Why it helps fight feelings of isolation to be open with your circle of family and friends
Why it’s OK to give yourself permission to feel anger in addition to frustration and sadness
How a couple may experience their child’s diagnosis in very different ways

134: Eight plus years of infertility to a miraculous adoption of twins with Natalie Fallert Natalie Fallert was very aware that couples can struggle with infertility. Multiple women on her husband’s side had infertility problems. She wasn't sure if they should look into it right away after marriage or wait as planned. After a year they began the journey with testing first. They would find a problem … We would fix it … They would find something else … We would fix that. This seemed to go on and on. Eight plus years also included IUI'S, IVF and Intravenous Immunoglobulin Therapy.
Things Natalie shared during our conversation:
· Being Raised Catholic and Questioning Intervention.
· Minister said God will put roadblocks up to steer us in the right direction.
· Chemical Pregnancy was emotionally devastating, as well as the financial devastation that went along with it. (Listen for Natalie’s metaphor to describe this feeling.)
· Drawing the line in the sand …I will finish this round and I’m done sticking needles in my body.
· Do we want to be pregnant, or do we want to be parents?
Natalie felt shame for being so angry with God at times and he still gave her grace and twin boys. You don't have to give birth to be called mom or dad.
“If you're talking to somebody about this, then they love you. If you're willing to share this with them, then they are a person in your life that actually does care about you. So sometimes they might say something that is harsh, but it's coming from a place of love.” ~~ Natalie Fallert
