Aurora's Birth was the Most significant moment in this Mom's life! This birth story starts with
"I first want to say that there has never been a more significant
moment in my life than when I finally held my brand new baby girl
before they had even cut the cord. I know I will never forget that.
It would have been worth anything I might have experienced- good or
bad.
Next I want to say that my birth experience was a very positive one,
and that it seemed to me to be about half as long as it actually was-
16 hours. I was able to maintain focus throughout nearly all of the
experience and have to say that I am a true believer in the
effectiveness of the Hypnobabies program."
Listen to the whole thing! It is great. :)

Ep169: Meghan’s Birth Story - A Feminine Birthing Experience This episode is being brought to you by Ellement prenatal supplements. I talk a lot about how all birth is natural and having a cesarean is no exception. I’ve had two myself, after all. Today’s guest, Meghan, opted for a semi elective gentle cesarean. In this episode she gets into what that looked like for her and why she made the decisions she did. Now, Meghan’s birth story takes place in Texas. During her pregnancy she had a scare with a potential genetic issue. Her story brings into sharp focus how Roe v. Wade can directly impact the safety of birthing people and the decisions families are able to make. If you want to help, please support reputable organizations.   In this Episode, You’ll Learn About: -What a semi elective gentle cesarean is -Why Meghan chose to switch care teams early on and how it impacted her delivery -Why she encourages that everyone get an amnio (amniocentesis) if they want to - it’s pretty simple -Why she leaned towards a c-section from the outset -How she and her doctor made a birth plan together -How Meghan and her husband chose to incorporate working with a doula   --- Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode166 Check out The Birth Preparation Course Register for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right Way Take a quick, fun labor pain quiz

E66. Managing Baby Reflux with Áine Homer Reflux must be up there with one of the most challenging but common conditions new parents and babies face. Seeing your little one uncomfortable and upset is heart breaking so I am excited to bring you this episode packed with expert information and guidance to cut through the confusion and help you navigate this tough time.
Áine Homer, the founder of The Baby Reflux Lady, is joining me today to answer your questions around reflux. Following her own experience in mothering two babies with infant reflux, Áine was inspired to develop a way to support other parents and equip them with the knowledge needed to help their baby. After two babies with reflux, CMPA and multiple other food intolerances and allergies between them, and three years of postnatal depression to boot, Áine knew she had to do something to provide the support that just wasn’t there when she needed it, and thus the Baby Reflux Lady was born! Despite what the doctors say, reflux is not normal, and parents don’t have to wait for babies to grow out of it.
To find out more about Áine’s incredible work all her details are linked in the episode description:

Ep168: All About Midwifery with Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) Gianna Fay I have been wanting to have a midwife on the show for a long time. It’s a big topic and I knew I had to get it right. That’s why I’m so thrilled to have Gianna Fay on the show today. Gianna Fay is a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM) and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP-BC). She has been a part of 600+ births and has worked in a variety of settings including out of hospital birth centers, large hospital teaching facilities, smaller community hospitals and private practice. Throughout her career, she has seen pregnant families struggle with navigating the maternity care system. Race and socioeconomic status impact every part of the delivery process and that can make getting the help of a midwife inaccessible for some. After having worked in so many different birthing settings, Gianna has decided to work within the hospital system so that she can make her skills and expertise available to everyone. This episode is being brought to you by Ellement prenatal supplements. In this Episode, You’ll Learn About: Why Gianna felt called to become a midwife What types of practice models she has worked in What people can expect when working with a midwife who is hospital based How midwives and physicians work together What the difference is between a midwife and a doula --- Full website notes: drnicolerankins.com/episode166 Check out The Birth Preparation Course Register for the class How to Create a Birth Plan the Right Way Take a quick, fun labor pain quiz

Baby Essentials – The Ultimate List There are over 3.6 million babies born every year in the United States alone. That creates a big market for companies that sell products geared toward new parents. Companies make everything you could imagine a new parent could use. This massive industry is estimated to reach over $225 billion in 2022. Preparing for a new baby makes it easy to get caught up in the consumerism of thinking you need everything. Marketing draws on your emotions to be a good parent and to keep your baby safe. Social media influencers can influence you to purchase particular products or brands. Plus, pregnancy is an exciting time, and buying things in preparation for your baby is fun.   It can be overwhelming to think about choosing the right products, how much everything will cost, and where you will put everything. This episode will explain exactly what you need for your new baby, whether you are purchasing items yourself or adding them to a baby registry. Plus, download the Ultimate List of the must-haves, optional items, and what is unnecessary.   Thank you to our sponsors 15% off Boppy.com with the promo code PREGPOD15. Boppy nursing pillows make breastfeeding or bottle feeding your baby so much easier. Designed with experts like lactation consultants to provide ergonomic support for you and your baby, Boppy nursing pillows are a lifesaver for new parents. These products are not for sleep.   Save 20% off plus free shipping on your first order of diapers from Coterie. Coterie diapers have up to 2x more liquid capacity and up to 4x faster absorbency compared to other brands. Part 2: Heart Support During Pregnancy This two-part meditation series was created to help support our heart function energy flow. These two particular JSJ self-help holds will help calm a very strong and fast heart beat. This pregnancy meditation supports our hearts physically, mentally, and emotionally. These self help holds also bring vitality to our lungs and entire chest area, open our hearts, and help calm and steady our heart.

Part 1: Heart Support During Pregnancy During pregnancy, supporting our hearts physically, mentally, and emotionally can offer huge benefits to you and your growing baby. No need to spend hours in visualization meditations if you're more word-based in your mental space like me. Connect with your inner soul, your heart space, and instantly feel connected with your own growing baby all the time. During these meditations where old emotions and possibly intense emotions may rise, I like to leave the baby out of communication in this process because these meditations are focused on the mom and giving all the attention to the mother and her body, mind, and soul.

Sleep Blissfully During Pregnancy Practice falling asleep during pregnancy using this delightful JSJ energy flow. In Jin Shin Jyutsu, called the Spleen Function Energy Flow, this flow helps support our reproductive functions and helps relieve us of pregnancy insomnia (among other things as well). I use this flow all throughout pregnancy (both right and left flow) to help assist myself to sleep.
During pregnancy, we have to be very careful in what we consume for insomnia relief. Some women are used to consuming substances that they are now told to stay away from (such as Xanax, Ativan, alcohol, marijuana, etc...) Instead of a substance after a long day, use this flow to help your body ease into a blissful night's sleep. I find that the first two steps of this flow help me release stress and strain from the day. And immediately when I settle into the next position (after moving my hand from tailbone to beneath my ribcage) I can feel my body and mind let go, and then I feel somewhat of a sinking, relaxing sensation, and this feeling always helps me drift right to sleep.
I would love your feedback on this episode if you have the time. And thank you for being a listener!

229: Shades of Blue Project and Black Maternal Mental Health Week Today’s show is another story of a spectacular someone who turned their personal grief into a mission to help others. Our focus is on the disparity of medical treatment and care in the Black community regarding maternal mental health, infant loss, and more. Join us for this inspiring story from today’s guest!   Kay Matthews is here to share her long-term work through the Shades of Blue Project. She and her team are on a mission to uplift all birthing individuals with the care, respect, and dignity they deserve—no matter their social status or birth outcome. Their focus is on the birthing experience, and they bridge gaps by acknowledging that everyone’s birth story matters. Through education, advocacy, and support, they are dedicated to helping birthing individuals of color whose lives are impacted by racial disparities that amplify their birthing struggles. It is from her personal experience of infant loss and postpartum depression that Kay recognized a critical diversity gap in mental health resources and emotional support for Black and minority birthing individuals. Kay has founded Black Maternal Mental Health Week, which in 2022 falls on July 18-25 with the theme “Collective Efforts for Greater Community Impact and Change.” You can learn more by visiting their Website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.    Show Highlights: How Kay came into the work she does today through a totally unexpected journey How Kay’s infant loss experience gave her a “big-picture view”  How Kay’s infant loss and postpartum depression were dismissed by healthcare professionals Why Kay decided to “go it alone” to help herself and share helpful advice with others in similar situations How Kay used her journaling practice as a springboard to begin the Shades of Blue Project to help others How the Shades of Blue Project has taken steps to influence policy in Texas and open resource centers in 23 other states Why Kay’s journal became the INSPIRE journal, an acronym for Involve others, Nourishment/exercise, Spirituality/prayer, Patience, Identify and initiate change, Rest/relaxation, and Each day is a new day How Kay has seen growth in awareness and resources for people going through similar struggles with infant loss and maternal mental health Why Kay wanted to focus more on her experience rather than her outcome How mortality and morbidity rates in the Black community require that maternal health and mental health be acknowledged together Highlights of Black Maternal Mental Health Week activities How responsibility and accountability come into play in a collective effort to help others in the Shades of Blue Project How you can help   Resources: You can connect with Kay and learn more about the Shades of Blue Project by visiting their  Website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

98: The hardest and most painful time was leaving the hospital with empty arms with Lauren Turley In this episode Lauren Turley shares her story about her daughter Catherine who is in heaven. At times she became very emotional remembering the hardest parts of their journey which started at the 20 week anatomy ultrasound. At that appointment she remembered it took a long time and then the sonographer said "The doctor is going to come in and we are going to take care of you. The doctor shared with us a very long list of what was wrong. Lauren said I just cried and was trying to figure out how I was going to take care of my 18 month old daughter when my heart is breaking? How am I going to be a good mom when my life has just stopped?
We went from figuring out a nursery and clothes to planning a funeral. It was very important to us to start sharing our story to help others right away. Their story has touched my heart just like every story I have heard and several moments and things that Lauren shared brought tears to my eyes. As a grief coach, I love hearing when there is joy and happiness that is found in such a very difficult and heart breaking story. When those things can be found and shared, healing is there. Lauren shared many sad and hard moments in their story and also many beautiful and joyful times. So I encourage you to be open to feeling the sadness and joy while listening to her share to support others.
Lauren's insight and encouragement: The biggest thing for caregivers or support people and the family to know is. It is OK and important to feel your feelings. There is no right or wrong way and you need to do what is best for you. Lauren said what works for me may not work for others and that is OK. There is no outline for how this works and that is probably what makes it so hard.
· Feel your feelings
· Give yourself permission to protect yourself and your family
· Do what is best for you and do not feel bad about that
· This is your time to take care of yourself and your family
· This is the beginning of a tough journey

She said when you are a bereaved parent you don't want anyone to forget your baby. We wanted people to know about her and for her life to mean something. Catherine Cares is where we channeled our grief.
Catherine Cares provides heartbeat bears, restaurant, fuel and grocery gift cards to families of babies who receive prenatal or newborn life-threatening diagnosis. We believe these small gestures centered on taking care of basic everyday needs help families in the midst of a difficult struggle. Catherine Cares provides services directly to hospitals, Maternal and Fetal Centers and doctor’s offices throughout the United States and Europe.
Heartbeat Bears, designed by Build-A-Bear Workshop and Catherine Cares, are provided to families of babies and children who receive a life-threatening diagnosis. Our bears come with a recording device within a pocket on the side of the bear. For babies, when a life threatening prenatal or newborn diagnosis is given, our hospital partners record the baby’s heartbeat on the device during an ultrasound. For older children, a sweet message, the sound of laughter or other comforting messages can be recorded to give the family hope and comfort through a difficult journey. Catherine Cares Heartbeat Bears are a cherished treasure for families.

E63. Jaundice and early infant feeding. with Dr Shruti Nathwani Infant feeding is one of the first things on a new parents mind - it is such a fundamental part of the fourth trimester. Whether you choose to breastfeed, combination feed or formula feed you and your baby are learning a whole new skill that can take a little time and patience to get to grips with. Knowing what to expect, how to work out if your feeding journey is going well and common conditions to keep an eye out for such as jaundice can make you feel more confident and prepared as you navigate the early weeks with your little one.
On this weeks episode I am joined by Dr Shruti Nathwani, Dr Shruti is a NHS Paediatrician and host of the platform @thechildrensmedic medic. Knowing there is a gap in knowledge and support parents receive upon arrival of their newborn, she set out to try and inform parents with evidence-based information and tips.
"It was when I had my own son that I realised there were so many questions as a new parent and not enough support to go around." She covers topics such as reflux, newborn stool, eczema, developmental milestones and many more on both her Instagram page and website www.thechildrensmedic.com

E64. Essential choking and first aid skills with Sammy Davies Being a parent is a responsibility like no other, it is to have your heart walking around outside your body and your natural parental instincts are to protect your little one from any harm. So, have you considered ensuring you have the essential choking and first aid skills to keep your little one safe. Choking is one of those things we all hope we never have to deal with, but the reality is it does happen to some babies and children and therefore equipping yourself with the skills to deal with it could quite literally save your child’s life.
Todays guest is Sammy Davies, who has been empowering parents by teaching them life- saving skills for the past five years. Before having children herself, she worked in a bustling, high acuity hospital in Melbourne, Australia as a Registered Nurse. After completing her Masters in Nursing she realised she had a second passion- teaching. Becoming a Nurse Educator allowed her to share her skills, and teach student nurses, nurses and doctors at the frontline.
Soon after becoming a parent herself (and making the move to the UK), she realised that her loved ones were not equipped with the skills that they needed to care for her children in case of a medical emergency. Sharing these life- saving skills with the people around her became her focus, and she went on to start her own businesses teaching parents friendly first aid. Over the years she has helped hundreds of parents and grandparents to know what to do if an accident did occur to their little ones.
Sammy offers Baby & Child First Aid sessions, and has developed an online course devoted to all things choking, follow Sammy on Instagram @happyheartsfirstaid and check out her life-saving courses : www.happyheartsfirstaid.com

Prenatal Nutrition Series: Preparing for birth and breastfeeding with Molly Mills, RN & IBCLC Welcome to the very first episode of the Pure Nurture Podcast! I’m so glad that you’re here. I’m your host and the founder of PureNurture.com, Kristy Rodriguez. I’m excited to have you join me on this inaugural episode. In future episodes, we’ll be speaking with educators, experts, advocates, and moms in the field/ who have dedicated their lives and work to supporting women on their journey through Pregnancy, birth and the precious postpartum phase of motherhood. Before we dive into these conversations and learn more from and about our upcoming guests, I first wanted to introduce you to Pure Nurture and give you the background story and share what Pure Nurture is all about, how it got started, and where it’s headed. Pure Nurture is all about a Holistic approach to creating a healthy new life for mom and baby. It is a community where we fully believe that self-care is baby-care. It encompasses a mind-body approach to pregnancy, birth, and motherhood. Pure Nurture is about connection, community, learning, inspiration, empowerment, self-care, self-love and most importantly, it’s a place where you can take all of this in, and ONLY keep what feels best for you and your family and leave the rest. I created Pure Nurture after suffering from postpartum depression. The various challenges of pregnancy and motherhood left me feeling alone and I knew I needed so much more connection and support. My hope is that this community will help you to feel more connected, to find the support you need and to ultimately feel your best. We are all in this together, this motherhood journey. And it’s full of love, laughter, crying, whining, excitement, contradictions, judgments, and so much more. Just like life, it is full of ups and downs. My hope is that this podcast supports you on your journey and leaves you feeling inspired, empowered, and supported as a woman, a mom-to-be, and as a mom. For our very first episode, we are joining Molly Mills, RN, and IBCLC. Molly is on the lactation team at the mama ‘hood where she runs a weekly Breastfeeding Group as well as an Infant Sleep Group. Molly is passionate about building a strong community for mamas and families so everyone has access to support. There is so much advice and information out there, Molly’s passion is in helping parents discover what feels right for them in their parenting journey, which is exactly what you will hear during our conversation. When she’s not at the ‘hood, she’s out on a run, learning to meditate or playing outdoors with her husband and three daughters. Molly will leave you feeling supported, empowered, and connected as a mama, especially related to birth and breastfeeding. Guide to Creating Your Baby Registry If you are pregnant and are expecting gifts, there are several reasons you should consider a baby registry. A registry helps friends and family know what you need and want. Without a registry, you will end up with items you do not need that you cannot return or exchange. A registry eliminates duplicates because once someone buys an item, the list updates to show someone purchased it. There are also perks for parents who create a baby registry. Many will give you a welcome gift that includes baby items, samples, and coupons. The majority of registries will also offer a completion discount. This means you can get a discount on any remaining items you purchase off your registry. This episode walks you through considerations when choosing where to register, the pros and cons of the top options, and tips for building your baby registry.   Thank you to our sponsors   25% off an Expectful annual membership with the code PREGNANCYPODCAST. Listen in to hear us talk about the challenges they faced within their marriage after losing Sam, how they navigated those challenges, how they grieved differently and navigated those differences in order to stay connected. Adam shares some specific difficulties he faced in being a grieving dad and wisdom and encouragement he would give to a grieving dad listening, as well as ways to support a grieving dad. Amanda also gives wisdom about what it looks like to support a grieving spouse or partner and I thought her advice was super, super insightful. Adam and Amanda also share very candidly and honestly abou their faith journey after losing their son and what it looked like to question God’s goodness and character and how to love a grieving mom who may be wrestling through her faith after loss. We finish up our time together talking about what it has looked like to find purpose in their pain and loss – and I love how Amanda ends our time together by saying “even in the hardest, rawest, most painful moments, I would not give up being his mom.” This conversation will remind you that you are not alone while also giving you hope that one day it won’t feel this heavy or this dark – there is joy to be had and a stronger marriage at the end of tragedy is possible.     THIS EPISODE IS DEDICATED TO LILAH VIOLET WASIELEWSKI BY HER PARENTS & FAMILY.  We have chosen to dedicate this episode in memory of our beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter and niece Lilah Violet for her second Heavenly Birthday. How did you grieve differently and how have you navigated those differences? You mentioned to me that connection is essential to surviving loss and healing, connecting with God, with your spouse, with your support system – tell me more about that.  Adam, what common lies do you think men believe about grieving a baby? What would you say to them? How can a spouse or friend/family help combat those lies? Amanda, what would you tell other moms about how to care for your husband/partner in their grief? Adam, what would you tell other grieving dads about grief & how to navigate it? What would you tell them about grieving within a marriage and supporting their wife/partner in their grief? What did your faith journey look like in this season? You mentioned to me that you had to re-figure out what a good and loving God meant – tell me more about that. How do you honor Sam today? What does it look like to parent together a child in heaven? How have you found purpose in your suffering? What would you say to a mom who is having a difficult time finding purpose in this season? 97: Feeling grief when asked if I have children with Anita Doermann Anita Doermann said it was like a stab to the heart when people asked if I had children. She shared about never having any biological children and suffering in silence while others shared about their pregnancies, deliveries and raising their children. For a long time she felt emptiness and disappointment in herself.
She said due to her infertility and other life experiences she did a lot of self discovery which has helped her to be a better listener and to share her experiences. It has given her strength and hope to not chastise others or make them feel belittled because we have all gone through good things and bad things. Hopefully what I and others have gone through, will strengthen us in whatever the next thing is in our lives.
Anita talked about the joy of becoming a mom at age 41 when she married her 2nd husband who had twin boys. It will bring tears to your eyes to hear her talk about her infant grandson which for many years she thought she would never have.
Anita's encouragement for you: I have not pursued this but I believe it could help to volunteer in a hospital or church to rock babies to fill that emptiness and close that gap a little. The pain can be great and I recognize that and respect it because I have been through it. There maybe a bigger plan and you may cross paths with someone that needs your help, love and support. Looking back most often gives us more clarity and the struggle is real when you are in it.
