Moon in Full, a contemporary coming-of-age story, shines light on one young man’s search for truth and compassion in a complicated era as it unwinds the deep-seated challenges we all face finding our authentic voice and true identities. Author Marpheen Chann’s heart-warming journey weaves through housing projects and foster homes; into houses of worship and across college campuses; and playing out in working-class Maine where he struggles to find his place. Adopted into in a majority white community, Chann must reconcile his fears and secret longings as a young gay man with the devoutly religious beliefs of his new family. S2 Bonus: Reading and Supporting Black Queer Authors This isn’t a standard episode – instead it’s but a miniscule sampling of queer works by black queer authors. We want to highlight them. There’s no need to press play, unless you want to listen to these titles and authors being read aloud. We just wanted to get your attention.   To begin, all links are through http://bookshop.org – an organization that allows you to order online and support your local indie bookstore. Eboné Bell: Editor-in-Chief of Tagg Magazine Eboné Bell is the founder and editor of Tagg Magazine, an award-winning print publication and media company serving LGBTQ women across the country. Tagg just celebrated their 10 year anniversary in September, 2022! The Washington Business Journal has named Tagg Magazine one of the “Top 25 LGBTQ-Owned Companies”. Her list of impact and accolades are a mile long including starting a student group for LGBTQ people of color while attending University of Maryland College Park. Twenty years later the group is still going strong. That’s the kind of different Ebone makes for her community and the people she loves.
In today’s conversation we’re going to dive deeper into what and who made Eboné into who she is today. What community members supported her rise and what barriers did she have to break through. If she could speak to her younger self, what would she say?

"The Feeling of Being Free in the Water": An Interview with a Transgender High School Swimmer Happy Transgender Day of Visibility! We heard a lot of misinformation this week during the proponent testimony for Ohio’s transgender athlete ban. So, Speaking Queerly hosts Mallory Golski (she/her) and Lane Shirrell (they/them) interview Nyx (she/her), a transgender female athlete (and KYC youth!) about how it feels to attend every 6 a.m. practice for her Central Ohio high school swim team but not be allowed to compete or earn her varsity letter. Nyx talks about her swimming experience, helps debunk the scarcity myth and other arguments made against transgender athletes and proves that “just because you’re trans, doesn’t mean you’re going to be better.”Have a question you want answered or a topic you’d like discussed on Speaking Queerly? Her debut poetry collection, "The Red Door," is a dark fantasy that combines Jewish folklore & mysticism with queer romance. It's currently available on Ben Yehuda Press.

“You Cannot Stay with Your Head Down”: A Conversation with Columbus Queer and Trans Icon LuSter P. Singleton As a heads up: There is language used in this episode that, while commonly used among and against LGBTQIA+ folks in the past, might not be as familiar or accepted among some – especially younger – members of the LGBTQIA+ community today. We acknowledge that each person’s journey and relationship to these words and phrases varies, and remind listeners to never use reclaimed or self-identified words to refer to others. On this episode of Speaking Queerly, hosts Mallory Golski (she/her) and Daria Johansen (she/they) sit down with Columbus’ queer and trans icon, LuSter P. Singleton (he/they). LuSter (he/they) is proudly from Zanesville, Ohio, and is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where they earned a Masters and Bachelors of Arts degrees in Women’s Studies. LuSter is a former coordinator of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Student Services and director of Ethnic Student Services at OSU. They also coordinated the Pride Family and Teen Area for Stonewall Columbus’ yearly Pride Festival for 14 years. LuSter also has a 30-year reputation as an accomplished gender performer best known for their gender-bending portrayals of the sassy Lustivious Dela Virgion and the savvy Luster Dela V. They’re the co-founder and visionary of 1990’s nationally and internationally acclaimed drag king troupe, H.I.S. KINGS, and the International Drag King Extravaganza (IDKE). They’ve also been featured in several documentary films and toured with theater productions. LuSter was also the 2022 KYC Community Freedom Fighter Award Honoree! We talk about KYC’s history, LuSter’s impact on Columbus’ queer and trans community, coming out, how to overcome people’s negative perceptions about queerness, and why young queer and trans folks “need to believe yourself about you.”Have a question you want answered or a topic you’d like discussed on Speaking Queerly? 2023-03-15 A Town Hall without Candidates Jonny shares the highlights of a town hall scheduled for March 13 in Carbondale with candidates running for local School Boards. Many were invited to attend, three indicated that they would, none showed up. So, the community that did come to listen and ask questions had a conversation about the serious issues facing public education, especially re: LGBTQIA+ youth. The questing and the comments were substantive. The irritation that, even in a progressive state like Illlinois, candidates can so easily shun having such conversations with their constituents was palpable. In the back third of the show, Jonny reviews legislation in Illinois meant to protect public libraries from censorship.

Trans People Belong in West Virginia In 2023 state legislatures across the South and Midwest have introduced over 400 bills attacking trans adults, trans kids, and drag queens. This legislative session in West Virginia saw the introduction of more than 15 anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ bills. On Thursday March 9th, 2023 trans organizers held a rally at the Capitol Building in Charleston, WV in protest of House Bill 2007 which would enforce a total ban on gender affirming care for minors in the state. Over 100 people packed the upper level of the capitol building to protest outside the Senate Chambers where the bill was being discussed. In this episode you'll hear interviews with organizers and attendees of the rally, and audio from a powerful afternoon of queer and trans rage, grief, joy, and laughter in the heart of a state often ignored by the national left.  * * * * * * * * * * * * * * This episode talks about suicide. 2023-03-08 Puppets, Queers, and Public Pedagogy Jonny and Dr. Shannon Green, both Beloved Puppetistas, discuss the beginning of public puppet making workshops in anticipation of the All Species Puppet Parade on Earth Day (April 22) in Carbondale, IL. Along the way, they discuss the challenges of public pedagogy, especially for queers. They note smilarites in resistance to environmental reform and LGBTQ rights advancement. But mostly, they celebrate their joy of art, education, and environmental advocacy.
“You’re Both Equally Women”: Honoring Trans Identities During Women’s History Month Speaking Queerly hosts Mallory Golski (she/her), Isiah Harris (he/they), Daria Johansen (she/they) and Lane Shirrell (they/them) explain two anti-LGBTQIA+ bills that have been introduced in Ohio and discuss how you can help push back against the transgender athlete ban (H.B. 6) and the bill to ban gender-affirming care for minors (H.B. 68). But, don’t worry – it’s not all bad news! This episode of Speaking Queerly also dives into why we should honor trans women’s lives and experiences during Women’s History Month, upcoming KYC events, what non-sport Olympic event the podcast hosts would win and more. Corrections: • In the episode, Mallory says that the legislation has not received any hearings. After the recording, H.B. 6 was scheduled for sponsor testimony in the Ohio House. • Mallory says that the legislation would allow transgender men to play on women’s sports teams. While this information is technically correct, she misspoke when answering Lane’s question: H.B. 6 would also not prohibit transgender men from participating in men’s sports. The bill would only ban transgender women from participating in women’s sports. • Mallory says that H.B. 68 is in the Ohio House Health and Human Services Committee. The bill is actually in the Ohio House Health Policy Committee. Have a question you want answered or a topic you’d like discussed on Speaking Queerly? Send an email to [email protected].
