365. Lose The Labels That Keep You Small & Expand Into Real Freedom There are more “labels” than ever floating around out there, especially in the areas of self-help and personal development. Occasionally, labels can be helpful by helping us to feel less isolated and alone in our “weirdness.” But identifying too strongly with any particular label has the potential to do more harm than good. They prevent us from viewing individuals (including ourselves) as a whole, complex and unique being. Labels, therefore, can keep us small, rigid, and wrapped up in parts of ourselves without allowing the fullness of our personalities to shine through. Labels can also keep us so deeply focused on “self” that we forget how much connection with others heals us, because we heal IN relationships. In this episode, we’re talking about:  How labels weigh us down and keep us small How to nourish yourself without the labels Personal development and self-help Judgment Relationships and human connection   This podcast topic actually came from a suggestion on Instagram. #59: Hold your nose and do the scary thing It would be great if we never felt insecure or anxious or scared when we had to do things like ask for money or refuse a request or even just get on with writing what we're supposed to be writing. But this sort of discomfort can be really hard to shift, no matter how much we work on our confidence and how many affirmations we scribble on post-it notes and stick to our monitor. It can be tempting, then, to think that we need to put off doing the hard things until we've got a few more years of therapy under our belts. But – and hear me out here – what if we just did them, even though they're horrible? What if you could ignore your discomfort and just get on with life? If you're game, friend, your Imperfectionist cheerleader has some words of advice to help you get started. Here's an (admittedly quite old) article summarising research on affective forecasting and the like: We don't know our own strengthReference:Wilson, T. Episode 47 – A Deep Dive into Duty of Care Physiotherapists have fundamental obligations to provide safe, competent, effective care to their clients, and to provide for continuity of care whenever a therapeutic relationship has been established. The concept of a duty of care underlies long standing professional norms and expectations. In this episode we discuss recurring challenges that physiotherapists may encounter related to the duty of care that they have towards their clients, including: ·       The physiotherapist’s responsibility to maintain the therapeutic relationship and take responsibility for conflict resolution. ·       Challenges related to discharging patients who still require treatment, but with whom the physiotherapist is unable to maintain a therapeutic relationship, and the physiotherapist’s responsibility to arrange for continuity of care. ·       Expectations related to informed consent and shared decision making such as the requirements of avoiding providing inappropriate or ineffective treatment and respecting the patient’s right to make decisions about their own care. We also discuss how to navigate the challenging situations that can arise when a patient declines or refuses treatment and the physiotherapist thinks the patient’s choice of action is unsafe. The Standards of Practice and Code of Ethical Conduct set out the expectations for physiotherapists related to duty of care. In this episode we elaborate on those expectations and discuss real world scenarios that physiotherapists may encounter from time to time. Ep 212: Things Are Different Now On this episode of the Awayken Space podcast I explore where I'm at now.
Californication W/C 10th April 2023When the Red Hot Chill Peppers sang about the dark side of the California they got it pretty square on the head. Of all the lines in the song the one that has always stuck with me is this one…'Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement'It gets straight to it for me, and it's been buzzing around my head ever since I arrived here. So much to love about this place and yet there will always be something missing. The message is clear, take it full in the face and don't look to closely and you will be fine. When you walk along the sidewalk around the outside of the Disney park you see at first hand the attention to detail that is required in this part of the world. It was bad.    Real bad.    I had a few bowls of cereal the day before as sort of an indulgent gift to myself before the start of the new week (I love me a good bowl of cereal with oat milk). I haven't had it for several weeks and thought nothing of it.    Then the next day, it happened. All at once.    I had one of the worst cases of bloating, indigestion, brain fog, mood swings, and fatigue that I have ever had. Sound familiar? Let’s face it, young children on the spectrum are a tough crowd, and that old uninvited friend, the imposter syndrome, returns.  The saying “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink," applies here—you can set up a great therapy session but you can’t make them interact or attend. So what can you do?  The great news is, we can get interactions going and we can engage them. The Buddha’s Austerities In this Dhamma talk at the International Buddhist Meditation Center Los Angeles on April 16, 2023, Subodha discusses the misconception that it is the torture and strict asceticism that the Buddha did while still a seeker that led to his awakening. It is his overcoming of his fear of pleasurable meditation and pleasures not associated with sensuality or unskillful mental qualities that led to his realization of the path and his awakening. It is this that we emulate.

534 | What Is Resistance Teaching You? In this episode, I am sharing some thoughts on resistance and a few quotes from the War of Art by Steven Pressfield.  “The more important a call to action is to our soul's evolution, the closer you are to your life’s mission, the more resistance we will feel and the more resistance we will feel about answering it. But to yield to Resistance deforms our spirit. It stunts us and makes us less than we are and were born to be. Never forget: This very moment, we can change our lives.”  In today’s episode we discuss: 1)  Steven quotes resistance as a negative force in the world that prevents you from living your dreams.  This includes the things we say yes and no to.  Everything is taking our time and energy and that is also affecting our flow of money at the same time.  Resistance is that voice in the back of your head that tells you that you aren't good enough, that you don't have enough time, or that it will never work. 2) We literally have two lives, the one we are living and the one within us and the difference between those two is simply resistance. In that space in between it is made up of the decisions, choices, activities, habits, rituals that help us manage the resistance. The problem is you think you’re not supposed to have resistance. 3) Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates to the strength of Resistance. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. Remember our rule of thumb: The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it. 536 | What You See In Others Speaks Volume In this episode, I am encouraging you to ask yourself some interesting questions.  We can learn a lot about ourselves by how we see others, by what we see in others, and some of the first thoughts that come to mind when we meet people.  I invite you to lift up the mirror for this episode because it might be enlightening! In today’s episode we discuss: 1) When judgment shows up, or you are having a heightened reaction to someone, stop and ask yourself where that is coming from and is that the person you want to be? 2) What if you think of yourself as having navigated a really difficult time, did you do the best you could at that time?  What if someone else is actually in the same place? One of the basis of NLP is that people are doing the best they can with the information they have.  What if we are doing our best and our best changes from day to day? What if that’s more than enough? 3) The next time you see something, someone that makes you think, why are they doing x,y,z, what if instead you stop and see the best in them, see them from a different light? 537 | Resistance is Growing Your Self-Doubt In this episode (part 2 from episode #534), I am sharing some thoughts on resistance and a few quotes from the War of Art by Steven Pressfield.  “The more important a call to action is to our soul's evolution, the closer you are to your life’s mission, the more resistance we will feel and the more resistance we will feel about answering it. But to yield to Resistance deforms our spirit. It stunts us and makes us less than we are and were born to be. Never forget: This very moment, we can change our lives.”     In today’s episode we discuss: 1)  You don’t overcome self-doubt, you build something bigger than it.  You move through the resistance and become bigger than the self-doubt. Self-doubt comes from a belief, and when you have a belief your subconscious mind goes searching for proof either way. 2) What if what you are resisting in your self-growth is only feeding your self doubt? How can you get bigger than your self-doubt?  Get into action, make promises to yourself and keep them, this will build confidence and belief in yourself.  3) Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates to the strength of Resistance. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. Remember our rule of thumb: The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it. 579: How to Meditate in Hell | Jarvis Jay Masters Today we have a truly incredible episode about how to meditate in hell. You’re going to meet a man named Jarvis Jay Masters, who I interviewed from his cell on death row at San Quentin prison in California. Any of us who meditate do our best to apply it to life’s ups and downs — but this person has been applying it in some truly extreme circumstances. Jarvis has now spent more than three decades on death row, including more than two decades in solitary confinement. Shortly after Jarvis’s death sentence, he became interested in Buddhism, and started developing a rigorous practice under the tutelage of a Tibetan lama, Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. Jarvis has now written and published two books about his life, Finding Freedom and That Bird Has My Wings. Both feature forewords by the renowned meditation teacher Pema Chödrön, who has been on this show, and his second book was endorsed by the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu and also by Oprah Winfrey, who selected the book for her famous book club last year.Jarvis’s current appeal sits before a federal judge as we speak. A decision on his future could be reached any day. Heads up there are frank discussions of suicide and domestic violence in this conversation. In this episode we talk about:His childhoodHis road to prisonHow he unlearned traditional (and harmful) aspects of masculinityHow he began to write, and the impact that had on him and his standing in the prisonHow he meditates in a noisy prisonThe details of his meditation practiceHis off-the-cushion practice of ‘engaged Buddhism’ with his fellow inmatesHow he prepares for the possibility of release–and for the possibility of executionHow he defines freedomFull Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/jarvis-jay-masters-579 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
580: Tripping Out with a Legend: Jon Kabat-Zinn on Pain vs. Suffering, Rethinking Your Anxiety, and the Buddha's Teaching in a Single Sentence A beautifully weird conversation with the creator of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D. is Professor of Medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he founded its world-renown Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Clinic in 1979, and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society (CFM), in 1995. He is the author of many books including Full Catastrophe Living and Wherever You Go, There You Are. His latest book, Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief, illustrates a range of evidence-based mindfulness meditation practices for those suffering with the challenges of chronic pain. In this episode we talk about:The origins of MBSR and its relation to pain reliefPain vs. SufferingThe accessibility of awarenessThe limitation of mindfulness meditation as a self-improvement practiceThe quote, “open your mouth and you’re wrong” Jon Kabat-Zinn’s definition of of healing Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/jon-kabat-zinn-580 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
