How Debate Teaches Us to Listen and Be Heard with Bo Seo • X93 We will learn:

How we screw ourselves in free-flowing arguments.
How to break through deadlocked conversations.
How to bring in empathy in times of disagreement.

Do you shy away from arguments because it’s just not worth it? Or do you run toward them, get nowhere and then feel like crap wishing you hadn’t?
What I’ve found is that so many topics have so much emotion behind them, or dare I say programming, that both sides become blinded by their talking points and have stopped being able to see outside of them.
So how do we get to a place where we respectfully converse? A place where we can come together and shave off the extremities in both of our views and meet somewhere in the middle?
That’s what we’re talking about today. Our guest is Bo Seo. He is a two-time world champion debater and a former coach of the Australian national debating team and the Harvard College Debating Union. He is one of the most recognized figures in the global debate community and is now the author of Good Arguments: How Debate Teaches Us to Listen and Be Heard.

Ejecting from a Navy Jet at 695mph, Bleeding Out in Shark Infested Waters, the Rescue Mission, & the Healing Journey Afterwards with Navy F/A-18E Pilot, Kegan Gill ..In 2014 US Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet pilot Kegan “SMurF” Gill survived the fastest ejection in the history of Naval Aviation at 695mph. His body was devastated impacting the sound barrier leaving him with a traumatic brain injury, broken arms, legs, shoulder, neck and a wide variety of nerve and blood vessel damage. His parachute disconnect malfunctioned and repeatedly drug him under the icy Atlantic Ocean while he awaited rescue. With lungs full of salt water and severe hypothermia he was rescued by a navy H-60 Seahawk helicopter. After over a dozen surgeries, two years of intense rehabilitation and overcoming prescription drug addiction he returned to flying F/A-18E Super Hornets and then had some more dramatic twists to his story. He is now on a continued path to healing via holistic means including the use of psychedelic therapy while he trains and competes in ultra endurance events.

Five Deliberate Choices to Realize Fulfillment and Joy with Amy Wong • 241 We will learn:

How we self-impose our suffering.
How to choose “feeling it out” over “figuring out out”.
A process called “painting forward” that helps you integrate new choices.

Did you know that we make an average of 35000 choices per day? Look back at yesterday. How many of those choices were you actually aware of as you were making them?
The thing about those subconscious decisions is, we have more control over them than we think we do.
So today we’re going to talk about five deliberate choices to help you realize fulfillment and joy in your life.
Our guest is Amy Wong. She is the founder of Always On Purpose®. She is an executive leadership coach, author, speaker, and facilitator working with organizations like Airbnb, Salesforce, Roku, LinkedIn, Facebook, and more.

33) My Coach Passed Away There's really no reason to "Learn the hard way" yourself. That simple concept is what led me to value coaching so much. Fast forward to Ian, my coach who passed away. This 23 year old was revered by executives twice his age so I hired this true visionary alien when I was 27, and even after five years, the knowledge he shared is extremely relevant.

He was so on target with his recommendations, I almost couldn't wrap my head around it at first. I was much more of a doer and this guy was absolutely brilliant; Out-of-this-world connections being made in front of my eyes. He was so big picture and profound.

One of the biggest pieces he left me with is the breakthrough of self-limiting beliefs. Basically, boundaries we set up in our minds, based on societal conditioning, our own view of ourselves, childhood experiences, parents, role models, and/or all of the above. It was so valuable to me, I'm repackaging his teaching and giving it to my own team to grow from. Learn exactly the type of person he was, and how I was able to see what I could not see as possible. As many illumined souls say, "Open up your pineal gland and with it, the seed of your spirit".

Grief Rituals for Finding Hope and Healing with Amanda Held Opelt • X92 We will learn:

The power of Irish keening for releasing emotions.
How to deal with fear around loss.
How to hold presence for grief, whether for yourself or a loved one.

There’s a huge spectrum for how people deal with grief. But it’s one of those things that I feel like we need a handbook for and we just don’t have one.
We used to gather around to support one another for all major life events. We had collective rituals that helped us feel connected. That gave space to the grieving. That kept life moving when the griever couldn’t yet handle the little things.
So what would that look like today, in the modern world? Today we’re going to explore some of the most helpful grief rituals that are worth bringing back.
Our guest is Amanda Held Opelt. She is an author, speaker, and songwriter. She has spent the last 15 years as a social worker and humanitarian aid worker. And she writes about grief and creativity, and believes in the power of community, ritual, and shared stories to heal even our deepest wounds.

Hearing the birds sing. Today’s Show Hello, and welcome to episode 35 The JOY Factor. My guest today is trauma specialist and substance abuse counselor Stephanie Snyder. You can read more about Stephanie’s background here .  Listen in as Stephanie shares her unique perspective on joy and healing as it relates to substance addiction and recovery. What We’ll Learn Healing is a mind, body and soul experience. When someone starts the journey of healing and goes from surviving to thriving they are able to see joy and beauty in the little things and eventually the bigger things!  A recovery saying Stephanie references: I can hear the birds sing again. You have recovered enough and have healed enough that you can hear things that are outside of yourself instead of only being able to focus on what’s going on inside of you.  Questions to consider when considering getting help. We need to speak out against mental health stigmas. Labels dehumanize people.  Treatment success depends on having safe, non-judgmental space to address the fear and intimidation clients may feel. Recovery and the development of self-worth develops in phases. Families need to heal together. It’s not just one person, the whole family unit is impacted.  Society has put so many expectations on parents. The first thing to help parents understand: This is not your fault.  Our children learn how to cope with things not just through the family unit but from other things they’re surrounded by in society. A few considerations regarding medicinal marijuana use. Child’s brain is still developing until 21. Just like with alcohol and cigarettes, there’s a legal age and biological factors that need to be factored in.  Very important to educate yourself before you engage in any kind of medicine based treatment. You can’t advocate for yourself and learn how to take care of yourself if you don’t know what’s going into your body.  Consult a professional and educate yourself.  Medical grade and CBD products are very different from street marijuana.  The amount of fentanyl on the streets is scary. Very easily absorbed through the skin.  If someone is considering medical marijuana I advocate for them to do it the safe, legal way and not just buy it off the street.  Favorite quote: “My goal is to do better than I did yesterday.” Resources  Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration Know the risks of marijuana National Institute on Drug Abuse  Trauma Informed Substance Abuse Treatment   Thank you for Listening It is a true honor to bring this podcast to you and I am so grateful that you took the time to listen. 70 Say No to “Stuff” and Other Secrets from Improving Your Speaking with Patricia Fripp Stuff, things, literally, simply . . . how often do you use these words when communicating with your team? “Naughty words” like these might be popping up in your speaking more often than you think, as I quickly learned during this week’s podcast with Patricia Fripp! As an executive speech coach, Hall of Fame keynote speaker, and the first female president of the National Speakers Association, Patricia knows all the secrets for how manufacturing leaders can improve their speaking skills and find the magic words for inspiring action, creating well-crafted communications, and showcasing the best possible version of themselves and their organization. 0:45 – The best manufacturing leaders are the ones with the best communication 5:45 - “7% is what you say, 30% is how you say it, and 55% is how you look” – is there any truth to this? 8:00 - If your words are well crafted and well-delivered, you can change your organization 8:11 – In a busy industry like manufacturing, it can be easy to lose sight of the importance of words in our everyday lives 8:22 – When there’s a miscommunication, leaders might assume the other person just didn’t understand, but it’s often an issue with words and phrasing 8:36 – “Stuff” is a rubbish word 9:00 – By being specific with your word choices, you inspire confidence and build credibility 10:00 – “If it weren’t a thing, what would it be?” Use specific words to replace unclear words like stuff or things 10:30 – Specific communication is especially important when you’re speaking to someone who doesn’t speak English as their first language 11:57 – If it’s not fruit, it’s not a bunch! Use numbers and specifics instead 13:16 – When possible, use shorter sentences to communicate and keep your communications to one idea per sentence 13:40 – Speak with the aim of being remembered and repeated 14:20 – By taking a pause, you give yourself a chance to breathe and allow the other person time to process 15:11 – “Literally” and “simply” are also naughty words! 18:48 – To improve your communications, record yourself and listen to the words you frequently use 21:00 – Depending on their background and culture, people may express themselves differently 22:00 - To inspire commitment and quality, ask them if their work would be good enough to sell to their own mother 23:00 – Ask as an advocate for your audience 24:52 – Every leader needs to show the person they are beyond their position Connect with Patricia Fripp Website Fripp VT

Managing Big Feelings with Liz Fosslien • 240 We will learn:

The seven most common big feelings and how to move through them.
How to put a positive spin on envy.
How to bust through perfectionism by replacing avoidance goals with approach goals.

Do you have big emotions? How do you feel about them? Are you ashamed of them? Overwhelmed by them? If you don’t have big feelings, have you ever asked yourself why? The problem is, we aren’t given a handbook for our humanness. So we look to others and we model them. Or we compare. Or we judge. Or we just pretend like nothing is happening. And then we suffer in silence and then wonder why things don’t get a whole lot better. But if we’re all going through the hardships of life, it doesn’t have to be that way. Even if you’re not big on sharing your emotions with others, there are ways to help that emotional energy move through you rather than getting stuck. And that’s what we’re talking about today. Our guest is Liz Fosslien. Liz Fosslien is an expert on how to make work better, and co-author and illustrator of the best-selling book Big Feelings and the Wall Street Journal best-seller No Hard Feelings. Her work has been featured by Good Morning America, The New York Times, The Economist, Time, TED, and CNN. She has given keynotes about emotions at work at organizations including Google, LinkedIn, NPR, and Spotify. Links from the episode:

The antidote to envy and jealousy Thich Nhat Hanh taught us that we don’t need external conditions to be happy - we can simply enjoy the experience of breathing in and breathing out. But how can we be happy when there’s people who are richer than us? Are better looking than us? That seem happier than we are?

Noga Arikha: The embodied mind Antonio Damasio described Nora Arikha as “a poet and a painter with the soul of a scientist.” Our conversation is informed by psychology and neuroscience. It is grounded in the firm intention to pay attention to the embodied quality of our experience and the context in which it emerges.

Noga Arikha is a philosopher and historian of ideas. Her The Ceiling Outside: The Science and Experience of the Disrupted Mind, was published by Basic Books (UK & US) in Spring 2022. Neuroscientist Vittorio Gallese called this book “a moving journey to the roots of the self, which uniquely combines the author’s deep knowledge of its neuropsychological foundations with a touching humanistic sensibility.” She is also the author of Passions and Tempers: A History of the Humours (2007). She is an associate fellow of the Warburg Institute and an honorary fellow of the Center for the Politics of Feelings, London, and a research associate at the Institut Jean Nicod, Paris. She is currently based in Florence, Italy. Elizabeth English: A gentle approach to mindfulness In this conversation, we talk about freeing meditation from the pressures of what we believe it should be and welcoming every aspect of our inner experience.

Dr. Elizabeth English began meditating as a student in 1983. Three decades later, she was appointed as Cambridge University’s first ever Mindfulness Practitioner. Her courses are the subject of research published in The Lancet showing significant benefit to students, and are now also offered more widely online. Elizabeth draws on four decades of personal meditation practice and her ordination within a Western Buddhist tradition, as well as her doctoral research at Oxford, where she studied Buddhist meditation texts. She is also a certified teacher of Focusing, Somatic Experiencing, and Nonviolent Communication. She spends much of her time singing and writing, both poetry and prose. Her first ‘gentle guide’ to meditation was published this year: Journeys to the Deep: A Gentle Guide to Mindfulness Meditation. She lives in Cambridge with her cocker spaniel, Cherub. For more information on her courses and her book, see her website.

Ep 162: On guilt, values and joy Hello there friends! Welcome to today's episode of SelfKind. Today, I'm flying solo and chatting about the culturally-accepted role of guilt in motivating us into action (or, alternatively, causing us to 'quit') and how we can consciously choose a different way. I also talk about how the pursuit of joy intersects with this and how a rollerblading class really brought this message home (for me, at least).Join me to hear:> why guilt is our default motivator and so easy to fall into> what you can use instead of guilt to move you towards more of what you want> the role of joy > the value of taking a both/and approach to ... everything.Tune in and then come share your thoughts with me. Mirror Meditation for Self-Reflection and Seeing Your True Self with Tara Well • X91 We will learn:

The dangers of identifying too closely with our reflections.
How to transform your relationship with mirrors.
5 basic steps to start a daily mirror meditation.

Most people know their flaws so well they practically identify with them. And many people can’t even stand to look in the mirror because the feelings of shame or repulsion are so intense.
The good news is, with awareness and intention, you can use the same mirror to reverse these patterns. The mirror can be a powerful tool for self reflection and for finding the you underneath the persona you’ve built up over the years.
We just have to consciously practice with it. And that’s what we’re learning today.
Our guest is Tara Well. She is an associate professor of psychology at Barnard College of Columbia University in New York, NY, where she developed a mirror-based meditation called “a revelation,” in the New York Times. Her new book: Mirror Meditation: The Power of Neuroscience and Self-Reflection to Overcome Self-Criticism, Gain Confidence, and See Yourself with Compassion was just released.

The mindfulness concept can be saved, but a major revision is needed A major clinical trial indicates problems with the use of mindfulness in schools
School-based mindfulness training (SBMT), as delivered in this trial is not indicated as a universal intervention. Moreover, it may be contraindicated for students with existing/emerging mental health symptoms. Universal SBMT is not recommended in this format in early adolescence.

Are "Shoulds" Ruining Your Life? with Tricia Huffman • X90 We will learn:

How to recognize the “shoulds” that are at the root of your doubts, fears, resentment, and shame.
How to call out the BS stories you create and believe about yourself.
How to stop beating yourself up over the “should haves” and what already happened.

Do you keep shoulding all over yourself? The energy of words is a powerful force. And sometimes the way we speak about a problem, about ourselves, about other people is what holds the energy that either keeps us where we are or helps us move in another direction.
And sometimes, even something as simple as a change of words can be the catalyst for opening up to things we didn’t even realize was possible.
That’s what we’re talking about today. Our guest is Tricia Huffman, aka Your Joyologist. She is a mental health and mindset expert known for sharing real talk with heart, calling you to uncover and honor who YOU are.

How to Do Hard Things with Steve Magness • 239 We will learn:

What we got wrong about toughness that actually was toxic.
How to create inner confidence.
Four pillars of toughness that we need to step up and do hard things.

Struggle is a powerful catalyst for transformation. Some of the strongest, most fascinating and complex people in the world are people who have survived big life-changing things.
But does that mean that those of us on top of the privilege pyramid - which is really anyone with a roof over their head and food on the table - are just doomed for dullness or apathy?
I don’t think so. I think the key is to create our own struggle. But first, we have to remember how to be up for a challenge. We have to know how to sit in discomfort and willingly weather the storm.
So that’s what we’re talking about today. Our guest is Steve Magness. He is a world-renowned expert on performance, well-being, and sustainable success. His most recent work is Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness. He is also co-author of the best-selling Peak Performance and The Passion Paradox.

Simran Jeet Singh, "The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life" (Riverhead, 2022) An inspiring approach to a happier, more fulfilling life through Sikh teachings on love and service. As a boy growing up in South Texas, Simran Jeet Singh and his brothers confronted racism daily: at school, in their neighborhood, playing sports, and later in college and beyond. Instead, Singh delved deep into the Sikh teachings that he grew up with and embraced the lessons to seek the good in every person and situation and to find positive ways to direct his energy. Singh reaches beyond his comfort zone to practice this deeper form of living and explores how everyone can learn the insights and skills that have kept him engaged and led him to commit to activism without becoming consumed by anger, self-pity, or burnout. Part memoir, part spiritual journey, The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life (Riverhead, 2022) is a transformative book of hope that shows how each of us can turn away from fear and uncertainty and move toward renewal and positive change.Raj Balkaran is a scholar, online educator, and life coach. Dude, Where's My Car? is a 2000 American stoner comedy film directed by Danny Leiner. The film stars Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott as two best friends who find themselves unable to remember where they parked their vehicle after a night of recklessness. Supporting cast members include Kristy Swanson, Jennifer Garner, and Marla Sokoloff. Though the film was panned by most critics, it was a box office success and has managed to achieve a cult status, partially from frequent airings on cable television. The film's title became a minor pop culture saying, and was commonly reworked in various pop cultural contexts during the 2000s.
