Episode 47 – A Deep Dive into Duty of Care Physiotherapists have fundamental obligations to provide safe, competent, effective care to their clients, and to provide for continuity of care whenever a therapeutic relationship has been established. The concept of a duty of care underlies long standing professional norms and expectations. In this episode we discuss recurring challenges that physiotherapists may encounter related to the duty of care that they have towards their clients, including: ·       The physiotherapist’s responsibility to maintain the therapeutic relationship and take responsibility for conflict resolution. ·       Challenges related to discharging patients who still require treatment, but with whom the physiotherapist is unable to maintain a therapeutic relationship, and the physiotherapist’s responsibility to arrange for continuity of care. ·       Expectations related to informed consent and shared decision making such as the requirements of avoiding providing inappropriate or ineffective treatment and respecting the patient’s right to make decisions about their own care. We also discuss how to navigate the challenging situations that can arise when a patient declines or refuses treatment and the physiotherapist thinks the patient’s choice of action is unsafe. The Standards of Practice and Code of Ethical Conduct set out the expectations for physiotherapists related to duty of care. In this episode we elaborate on those expectations and discuss real world scenarios that physiotherapists may encounter from time to time. Ep 212: Things Are Different Now On this episode of the Awayken Space podcast I explore where I'm at now.
Californication W/C 10th April 2023When the Red Hot Chill Peppers sang about the dark side of the California they got it pretty square on the head. Of all the lines in the song the one that has always stuck with me is this one…'Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement'It gets straight to it for me, and it's been buzzing around my head ever since I arrived here. So much to love about this place and yet there will always be something missing. The message is clear, take it full in the face and don't look to closely and you will be fine. When you walk along the sidewalk around the outside of the Disney park you see at first hand the attention to detail that is required in this part of the world. At no pointt do you see a delivery entrance or a staff car-park or a collection of waste bins. Everything is done meticulously to ensure the spell is never broken. The problem is that every once in a while we need to see how the sausage is made.Stay safe.AntCalifornication – Red Hot Chilli PeppersMary Spender YoutubeMary Spender WebsiteTherapy For Me (or TFM as I now refer to it) is a bit of an audio curiosity. It started out as a mechanism for me to clear my head, with the hope that by saying stuff out loud it would act as a little bit of self-help. It's remains loose in style, fluid in terms of content and raw – it's a one take, press record and see what happens, affair. If you want to keep in touch with TFM and the other stuff I do then please follow me on Facebook, Insta, Twitter or Patreon. Thanks for getting this far.

Simple Play for Optimal Outcomes with the Four Bs I used to have this burning question when I starting working with young autistic clients—How do I get an interaction going when this little human clearly wants nothing to do with me? Sound familiar? Let’s face it, young children on the spectrum are a tough crowd, and that old uninvited friend, the imposter syndrome, returns.  The saying “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink," applies here—you can set up a great therapy session but you can’t make them interact or attend. So what can you do?  The great news is, we can get interactions going and we can engage them. This episode discusses how to use the simplest tools for optimal engagement using bubbles, balloons, balls, and bodies. — Useful Links —Hanen More Than Words Overview Opportunity Cost First Speak Their Language Simple Tools BalloonsMusic: Simple Gifts performed by Ted Yoder, used with permission

What Do Weightlifting And Poledancing Have In Common? Answer: A dominant movement pattern that is the same across all this patient's activities.  No 1- weightlifters brace and dump their shoulder blades when they rack squat. A very common pattern for this movement, especially when you are lifting over #200 +.  The problem is when this becomes dominant for all movements.  Healthy systems need choices, plural. The nervous system then grades the strategy depending on the movement and load needed.  What happens when someone uses this strategy to pole dance?  No 2-a rigid thorax does not serve here. The main impairment in our clinical practice is not a stiff thoracic spine but one with a loss of control.  Imagine that?  How does that transcend into low back pain?  Listen in as Erica and Susan discuss how to down train this common problem and give this patient more choices for optimal movement.   A glance at this episode: [8:24] Stretching and why it isn't helpful here [13:11] Movement options at home [17:04] The importance of hands-on work and the wall squat [21:28] Abdominal synergy [25:21] The diaphragm and what it takes to move well [30:58] Connections to the neck [35:00] Adaptation for athletes with lower back pain   Related links: Tough To Treat Website Erica’s Course: Decoding the Complex Patient Susan’s Pelvic Health Education Subscription Access the Transcript

Ep 73 Giorgos Tsiris This episode is Luke's conversation with Giorgos Tsiris, with a focus on spirituality and music therapy. Born and raised in Athens, Greece, Giorgos moved to London in 2007 for his music therapy training. For the past 14 years, he has worked as a music therapist in diverse palliative care contexts for adults with incurable illnesses, their families and their local communities. He has developed collaborative community and intergenerational projects disrupting societal assumptions about death and dying, and his work has received national awards and informed similar arts initiatives internationally. Alongside his practice, Giorgos has a multifaceted research portfolio with extensive experience in issues pertaining to service evaluation and professionalisation in music therapy and within the wider field of arts and health, and in 2014 he co-authored two books on service evaluation and research ethics respectively. His doctorate focused on spirituality and its place in music therapy. Through an ethnographic lens, his research has brought to the fore the ‘doing’ of spirituality, its messiness and its performance within everyday music therapy contexts. Giorgos is the founding editor of Approaches: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Music Therapy, and in 2022 he co-chaired the 12th European Music Therapy Conference. He currently serves as Senior Lecturer in Music Therapy at Queen Margaret University and the Arts Lead at St Columba’s Hospice Care, Edinburgh, Scotland.   References:   Bucar, L. Jean Swidler: Fighting for the Needs of ALS-Related Gene Carriers When we talk about ALS, we often make a distinction between types of the disease: 90% of cases appear to be sporadic – meaning there is no family history of the disease. The opposite is true of the other 10% – known as familial ALS or genetic ALS. In these cases, the disease can sometimes be traced back in a family for generations.
Behind this phenomenon are a number of inherited mutations in genes with names like SOD1, FUS, C9orf72. With the advent of widely available genetic testing, people with a family history of ALS are now able to find out if they carry these mutations – and are thus likely to develop the disease.
When Jean Swidler was a child, she lost her grandmother to ALS. Then as, an adult, her mother was diagnosed with the disease. Eventually, Jean herself underwent genetic testing and discovered that she carries the C9orf72 repeat-expansion mutation.
Since then, Jean has become a tireless advocate for asymptomatic carriers of ALS-related genetic mutations. Today, she joins us to talk about her story, her advocacy, and how she believes the medical and research establishment could be better serving people in her situation. Support the show: https://www.als.net/donate/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

S4, Ep 7 Best Friend Therapy: Narcissists – Do you know a taker? When is a boundary really a demand? How can we protect ourselves? This week we're talking about those familiar situations, friendships and relationships, in which people take more from us than they give.We look at the difference between boundaries and demands, and explain why our tolerance for narcissistic traits in other people might wear thin as we get older. Elizabeth explores why she has a habit of giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, and Emma shares how her journey through peri-menopause has helped her separate the wheat from the chaff. We leave you with some practical advice about how to communicate more authentically and develop better relationships that are less about giving and more about sharing.—Best Friend Therapy is hosted by Elizabeth Day and Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp.—Social Media:Elizabeth Day @elizabdayEmma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrellBest Friend Therapy @best.friend.therapy
S4, Ep 8 Best Friend Therapy: Empowerment – What is crone energy? Why is ageing positive? How can menopause empower us? Welcome to this season finale of Best Friend Therapy, in which we're talking about something we could all do with a bit more of in life – crone energy and the empowerment it brings.Far from the Cambridge English dictionary’s definition of a crone as an "ugly, old woman", we are talking about the stage in a woman's life when she reclaims her feminine power and agency, and we chart a journey through the stages of maiden, mother and crone, with a view on women's health, responsibilities and relationships.Emma tells us how the relationship between responsibilty and influence affects our stress levels, and Elizabeth pitches for "Reclaim the Crone" to be printed on a line of T-shirts.Stay tuned for the next season of Best Friend Therapy – coming soon!—Elizabeth references the following book and article in this week's episode (and Emma dutifully includes them in the show notes): https://www.waterstones.com/book/the-ruin-of-all-witches/malcolm-gaskill/9780141991481 and https://croneconfidence.com/2019/10/16/7-signs-you-might-becoming-a-crone/—Best Friend Therapy is hosted by Elizabeth Day and Emma Reed Turrell, produced by Chris Sharp.—Social Media:Elizabeth Day @elizabdayEmma Reed Turrell @emmareedturrell Best Friend Therapy @best.friend.therapy

Ep149 – Why is violence not THE deciding factor? (Trauma and PTSD) In this episode we will talk about violence and the deciding factor for something to become a trauma or even PTSD. It is important to understand what the main factors are to know what to focus on – especially when dealing with ring trauma. To truly trying to understand this we use our slapped in the face example again – this time with the violence being the focus, while the level of force stays exactly the same. We first talk about the slap in the face example, then about the differences and then the deciding factor.Contact: [email protected] Transcript: https://www.johannadraconis.com/episode149Contact: [email protected]: www.johannadraconis.com www.johannadraconis.com/archive-collectionsupport me:https://ko-fi.com/johannadraconishttps://paypal.me/JohannadraconisDiscord/support group: https://discord.io/JohannaDraconishttps://discord.gg/mEAgpqjuhFtwitter: https://twitter.com/JohannaDraconisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/JohannaDraconis/youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCR_eyifiglAs0knS4huMwoQhttps://www.youtube.com/@johannadraconis reddit archive: https://www.reddit.com/r/DraconisCPTSDarchive/reddit convo: https://www.reddit.com/r/DraconisCPTSDtalk/rss feed: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/371360.rss

It is a bit of an experiment and so your feedback is especially appreciated. But for now I will give you the categories and what goes into them and you can add more details. Now these categories cover all the elements that are relevant in regards to PTSD. This is supposed to be a tool for you to use. Be it for better knowing where to look for triggers and the like, to estimate coming missions or to just better understand what is happening in your brain. Accepting Your Limitations Despite popular belief, we can’t “do it all.” We’re not God. So what happens when we run into a wall that forces us to reassess what we’re doing? We must accept that we have limits and then use wisdom to make decisions. I’ll share a story of when I had to face my limitations and there was not “perfect” next step.

S2 Ep. 12: Erika Bornman (P2) on her life, advocacy work, & memoir, "Mission of Malice. My Exodus from KwaSizabantu." When Erika Bornman was nine years old, her family joined and ultimately moved to, KwaSizabantu, a Christian mission in South Africa—a place touted as a multiracial nirvana, founded on egalitarian values. But life at KwaSizabantu was hard, especially because Christianity was used to justify harsh punishments and physical abuse. KwaSizabantu exerted emotional, psychological, and sexual control over her, until, finally, she escaped at the age of 21. Escaping a restrictive religious community is difficult, but rehabilitation into ‘normal’ life after a decade of ritual humiliation, brainwashing, and abuse was much more painful. Erika could not ignore her knowledge of the grievous human-rights abuses being committed at KwaSizabantu, and so she embarked on a quest to expose the atrocities. With her help, News24 launched a seven-month investigation, culminating in a podcast that would go on to win the internationally renowned One World Media Award for Radio and Podcast in 2021. In Mission of Malice: My Exodus from KwaSizabantu, Erika chronicles her journey from a fearful young girl to a fierce activist determined to do whatever it takes to save future generations and find personal redemption and self-acceptance. Erika has also carved a career for herself in magazine publishing as a writer and editor. Mission of Malice, her memoir, is her first book and an important element in her quest to make the world a safer place for children. She lives in Cape Town, South Africa, with her two cats. S2 Ep. 13: Marc-Henri Sandoz Paradella on his life, family legacy, & his book, "Toxic Jesus. My Journey from Holy Shit to Spiritual Healing." Marc-Henri Sandoz Paradella is a writer, mentor, therapist, theologian, and teacher of meditation and tarot. He graduated in theology from the University of Geneva in 1987 and was a pastor for fifteen years. Then he radically reoriented his life. Years later, he fully realized and dealt with the toxic dynamics that had been imprinted within him by his upbringing and religious commitment. He now dedicates most of his time to writing, individual counseling, teaching meditation, yoga nidra, and tarot. Toxic Jesus is a thought-provoking book rooted in the author’s deep personal experience. It shows how every religion can become toxic and promote shame, guilt and repression. It exposes how the poison of toxic spirituality hides behind religious façades and affects every person exposed to it. Finally, it guides you through the path of recovering from the damages caused by toxic spirituality. Click here to purchase Toxic Jesus. My Journey from Holy Shit to Spiritual Healing.
