PipemanRadio Interviews alltheprettythings On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Tristan from Alltheprettythings, a band with some badass and catchy music coming up right now Tristan talks about his background in music and how he became a part of Alltheprettythings. He mentions that he was a touring guitar technician and had put bands together in the past, but they always fell apart. After moving to Wilmington, North Carolina, he became friends with one of the local music shop guys who was building a studio and offered his services. The studio's business partner was the band's other guitar player, Worth, and after meeting each other, they realized that their ideas of what a band should be were aligned. They started creating music together, and when they had a few cohesive tracks, they got a friend to come and do some drums. Afterward, they convinced Jeremy, whom Tristan had met through touring, to join the band. The band now has its unique sound, and while it may not be reinventing the wheel, it has its voice. PipemanRadio Interviews HIM of Sermon On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to HIM from Sermon, to talk about their new album and the state of the world today. The conversation starts with Pipeman telling HIM that he is excited to have them on the show because they have some killer new music. HIM thanks Pipeman for the introduction and Pipeman responds by saying that he is from the New York, New Jersey area and he is brutally honest. HIM jokingly says that Pipeman should have told them if their music was crap. This sparks an idea in Pipeman’s mind to start off all interviews in the same manner. Pipeman talks about how HIM’s new album is all about what the world is going through today and how hateful people are, which really burns him all the time. This is why Pipeman loves HIM’s new music. HIM agrees with Pipeman, saying that the subject of the album is interchangeable with most of human history, but it feels more potent now because of the internet. Pipeman responds, saying that sometimes he thinks they were better off without the internet and social media and not knowing how hateful people were. HIM agrees and adds that it is nice to be able to shut off from the noise if you want to, but it is difficult to have a day where you can escape that kind of information. The conversation takes a lighter turn when Pipeman shares that he was in Bali for a couple of months and how he was able to escape all the noise from social media and the internet. HIM expresses interest in Bali and asks what religion is predominant in Bali. Pipeman says that most of it is Hindu, but they also have Buddhism. He adds that it is cool to see two different philosophies sharing a temple. HIM agrees and shares about multi-faith prayer rooms in museums, where Catholics and Muslims pray together, and says it's a beautiful thing to witness. The conversation ends on a positive note, with both Pipeman and HIM enjoying the exchange of ideas. You can check the band out on social media, via Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @Sermonsound if you want to keep up to date with them, and you can be sure to find their music available to purchase from must good music outlets. On March 31st, melodic-melancholic-doom outfit Sermon will release their sophomore album, Of Golden Verse, via Prosthetic Records. Departure is song that was sent “Golden is what I want Sermon to be,” he notes. “It’s got the intricate, indulgent prog thing going on, it’s got a big old chorus and the structure is a bit weird. It keeps going up and up and up. It’s not just verse and chorus. It just keeps climbing. It’s all about the idea of people weighing each other down to get them to think the way they’re thinking. It’s like conversion – you’re constantly weighed down by other people and in the end you give up, and you say, ‘Okay, I agree with you…’ just to end it. That constant weighing down is an abuse of power. So with Golden, the idea is that you’re just raining down gold on this person until they’re completely cast in it.”Pipeman's Power of Music is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. PipemanRadio Interviews Saxon About More Inspirations On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman welcomes Nigel from Saxon, one of his favorite bands for the past 40 years. Nigel and Pipeman talk about Saxon's new album More Inspirations and the songs that they chose to do their own version of. Nigel talks about the inspiration behind the album and the process of choosing the songs. Pipeman shares his experience of being mesmerized by Ronnie James Dio's voice during a Black Sabbath concert back in the day. He also talks about how Saxon nailed "Man on the Silver Mountain" on the album, which was a Rainbow song with Dio singing. Nigel shares that the band are huge Rainbow fans, and Ronnie was a friend of theirs, so it just made sense to do it. Nigel also talks about the process of trying to "Saxon" each song, as they wanted to put their own flavor to it, which he believes they have achieved. He mentions that the whole band was involved in choosing the songs, and it was a lot of fun. There wasn't any song that they had a hard time agreeing on. The album, according to Pipeman, sounded like Saxon and not like the original songs, which Nigel says was intentional. Be sure to pick up your copy of the new album off you usual music selling platforms, like Amazon, and keep an eye out for next year when they’ll be releasing another studio album which is super excitingPipeman's Power of Music is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. PipemanRadio Interviews Good Bison On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Pablo of Good Bison. Pablo has just released a new EP called "Ghost on Mulholland" and Pipeman is excited to talk about it. He loves the concept of the EP and feels connected to it as he has driven Mulholland himself many times. The EP is not just about music, it also has a short story that goes along with it. Pablo, a writer at heart, talks about the importance of narrative in his music. He mentions that the story of the ghost attached itself to the music while he was working on the EP. The journey was already baked into the songs and it was a personal haunting, dealing with a literal ghost. Inspired by Goosebumps and Stephen King stories, Pablo felt a presence looming over him and he would often drive up and down Mulholland trying to get further away from the ghost. Pipeman and Pablo talk about the ending of the story where it turns out that the ghost was actually a friendly one. They liken it to Casper, the friendly ghost. The ghost had good intentions but was not good at communicating them or giving off a positive appearance. Pablo points out that it can be difficult to face such a situation but once you do, you realize that the ghost was just trying to help. Pipeman mentions that being a ghost could be frustrating as you may not know what's going on and just trying to say hello could come off as traumatizing. Pablo and Abe Mendez, who produced the entire album, were clear about the fact that the EP was a journey. They didn't know what the destination was or what the purpose of the journey was, but it was very much a trip. Pablo believes that in all kinds of trips, you bring something back with you or learn something about yourself. Writing is important to him and he says that good writing brings you on a journey. They were clear that the intent of the EP was to take the listener on a journey and discover something about themselves. You can find Good Bison all over the internet, on all the major streaming platforms and all the major social media networks, so just give them a search and they should show up anywhere you want them, or you can check out their website goodbisonmusic.comPipeman's Power of Music is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. PipemanRadio Interviews Lunar On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Alex from Lunar, a band with a unique sound that blends different genres. Pipeman praises the latest tune by Lunar, highlighting its amazing musicianship, and shares his perception that the band's music sounds like a combination of heavy metal, thrash, death metal, and hair metal. Alex agrees and mentions that the band strives to have a good balance of eclectic genres, which is possible because the band members have different musical influences. The band members' musical tastes and experiences come from different subgenres, such as power metal, funk, and tribute bands. This eclectic mix of influences adds a unique sound to their music. Pipeman shares his impression of Lunar's song, Juggling Chainsaws, where he felt surprised every 30 seconds. Alex explains that the album, in particular, keeps listeners guessing while staying coherent throughout, taking them on a journey, and making them want to see it through to the end. Pipeman then talks about Lunar's second album and asks Alex to share more about the song's sad themes. Alex clarifies that the previous album, Ilon, was written about the death of Ryan Irwin, the band's friend and co-founder. This album is about the grieving process and coping with his loss. PipemanRadio Interviews Ondfodt On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Owe, the frontman, guitarist, and songwriter of the band Ondfodt. Pipeman starts the conversation by praising Owe's talent, and the technicality and speed of his music. Uva agrees that playing an instrument requires years of practice and that even experienced musicians need to practice on a daily basis to maintain their skill levels. He also mentions that drumming is an essential part of their band's music, and it creates the illusion of the guitar being faster than it actually is. Pipeman and Owe then delve into the topic of black metal music. Owe shares his thoughts on the evolution of black metal, stating that it has come a long way and that newer black metal bands are trying too hard to make their music sound unique. He points out that some of the newer bands have good production and techniques but lack the true essence of black metal. Pipeman highlights the importance of practice and dedication to the craft of music. He reminds listeners that even those with natural talent still need to put in the hours to learn and maintain their skills. Uva agrees, adding that while some people may have an easier time learning an instrument, everyone needs to practice to achieve their goals. Overall, the conversation between Pipeman and Uva is an insightful look at the world of music, the challenges of being a musician, and the evolution of black metal. PipemanRadio Interviews John DeMena In this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to John DeMena, an amazing musician who shares his story of coming to LA and going through the struggles of survival and chasing his dreams in the music industry. John's story was particularly challenging because he landed in LA just two months before the recession hit in 2000. Finding jobs and stability in the music industry was difficult for him. John lived in hostels with six to eight people for three to four months until he got a job and built his credit score. As a young adult, John was naive and didn't know what credit was in America. He thought that having money in his bank account would allow him to rent a place to live, but he was wrong. He had to learn the hard way about building credit and how things worked in America. John's early years in LA were full of challenges, but he survived and learned a lot of discipline. He believes that the difficult times he faced built his character and developed his personality, and he often says that it separates the boys from the men. John also shares his struggles in finding people who were artistically aligned with him or finding affirmation to stay together for a while. Many people come to LA and have to be part of multiple bands to pay their bills. But for John, the only way to move forward was as a solo artist who writes everything and then puts the band together. He developed a DIY approach and did everything himself. Overall, John's story is one of perseverance and determination to make his dreams come true despite the challenging times he faced. If you want to keep up to date with John, you can find him everywhere online under John DeMena, including his new TikTok channel you should definitely check out, and John DeMena Music on Facebook. Be sure to check out his music videos too, which he describes as very diverse, ranging from dystopian to modern, to cyber punk. New album, Dreams and Lies, out now. Featured by MTV Germany for his cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange", as well as outlets like Metal Hammer in Spain, Brave Words, Sonic Perspectives, and more. He is a Spanish immigrant who came to the US to pursue his dreams as an artist. https://www.johndemena.com/Pipeman's Power of Music is a music and interview segment of The Adventures of Pipeman Radio Show (#pipemanradio) and from The King of All Festivals while on The Pipeman Radio Tour. PipemanRadio Interviews Lordi On this episode of the Adventures of Pipeman, Pipeman speaks to Mr. Lordi, an amazing musician and artist known for his music, visuals, cinema, and artistry. Pipeman is impressed by Lordi's latest music video, Dead Again Jayne, and asks him about it. Lordi explains that the video is meant to look like an 80s cable TV horror show showcasing a 1930s old Universal horror movie. He directed and edited the video himself, and he had fun doing two different styles, the 80s cheap cable TV style and the 1930s black and white film style. Lordi reveals that young people today do not understand the concept of television and the old cable TV show since they have never experienced it before. Lordi shares that he has never been on social media and still lives in the 80s and 90s, and he acknowledges that these decades were the greatest. Pipeman agrees, and they discuss how technology has changed the artistry of music videos. Lordi believes that the magic of the videos is gone now that anyone can do it, and the charm is lost. Lordi also talks about one little detail from the video shoot where he noticed that younger film crew members did not know how to use a film camera since everything is now digital. Pipeman and Lordi continue to chat about various topics such as how Lordi likes to scare people and how he sees himself as an entertainer rather than a musician. Lordi also reveals that he is currently working on his autobiography, which he hopes to release soon. Overall, Pipeman and Lordi have a fun and insightful conversation about Lordi's latest music video, the evolution of technology and artistry, and Lordi's upcoming projects. You can get more information on Lordi over at Lordi.fi, as well as on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter under Lordi Official. You should check the amazing music videos, also check out atomicfire-records.com to get your hands on the music. Clear the manège, let the ultimate LORDI show begin! Screem Writers Guild, a new beast of an album by the beloved Finnish hard rock monster squad, is out TODAY on Atomic Fire Records. Its title — a “LORDIfied” play on words — is a reference to the “Screen Writers Guild,” an association of Hollywood screenplay writers (1920s to 1950s), yet there is no doubt that LORDI‘s musical version is much louder and fiercer. “The record itself isn’t a real concept album, but it obviously plays with the overall cinematic theme,” says Mr. Lordi. Screem Writers Guild was produced by Mr. Lordi with Mana and Janne Halmkrona as executive producers. Ilkka Herkman took care of mixing and Pauli Saastamoinen mastered the record. The artwork was also designed by Mr. Lordi himself who has made a name as director for the band’s vision since the early ’90s. Screem Writers Guild will be available in the following formats: Limited Collector’s Box Set – Includes alternative cover artwork, CD-digipak, 2xLP in gatefold, exclusive Live At Masters Of Rock DVD featuring five live songs, five band member portrait art prints plus LORDI notebook. The box set will be available in three color variants: – Red/Black Splatter vinyl @ Atomic Fire Records Mailorder – Green Marbled vinyl @ EMP – Purple/Black Marbled vinyl @ Atomic Fire Records US Mailorder, Nuclear Blast, and Levykauppa Äx Other configurations: – CD-digipak – 2xLP gatefold (Transparent/Blue Marbled) – 2xLP gatefold (Red/Black Splatter; only available in Europe) – 2xLP gatefold (Green Marbled; only available @ EMP) – 2xLP gatefold (Purple/Black Marbled; only available @ Atomic Fire Records US Mailorder, Nuclear Blast, and Levykauppa Äx) – digital Order the album, pre-save it on your favorite DSP, or preorder it digitally at THIS LOCATION. Founded in 1992 by singer, songwriter, and designer Mr. Lordi, LORDI are one of the major Finnish rock/heavy metal acts of our time. Originally rooted in Rovaniemi (Northern Lapland, Finland), the band achieved their international breakthrough after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with their hit song “Hard Rock Hallelujah” in 2006. Since then, the unconventional troop has rocked their way into the spotlight of Europe with charm, unforgettable tunes, and elaborate monster costumes, and have become an integral part of the lineups of globally recognized festivals such as Wacken Open Air (DE) and Masters of Rock (CZ) among others. “A concept album of sorts, Screem Writers Guild plays out like a twisted musical, with numerous faux-macabre spoken word interludes and lashings of cinematic ambience amidst nods to ’70s and ’80s horror flicks. In between, LORDI dish out some of their sharpest songs in years.” — Blabbermouth “Screem Writers Guild, has everything it needs for the haunted motif, from the dark lyrics to the spooky key-laden hard rock and undead monster visuals. At the same time, the band also delivers the hard chops to back it up, drawing from greats like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper.” — Riff Magazine “…a wonderfully promising starting point in the band’s

ALMA With a frenetic twist on electronic pop, ALMA has over the past 7 years become one of the most exciting pop artists in the world.

ALMA first rose to fame a decade ago when she took part in the Finnish version of the popular singing competition, IDOLS. Her powerful
voice and energetic stage presence quickly caught the attentions of the judges and audiences alike and she went on to place fifth in the competition. Her enviable career trajectory following the show, however, shows that it’s not all about winning competitions.

ALMA’s debut single, "Karma", came out in 2016 and she has, since, collaborated with some of the biggest names in pop, including Miley Cyrus, Charli XCX, Tove Lo, Tove Styrke and MØ.

Our interview coincides with the release of ALMA’s highly anticipated new album, Time Machine, which showcases her growth and development as an artist. It also sees her building on her songwriting prowess, penning lyrics that, at times, come from a very personal, honest place.

With a bold style and a daring, unapologetic attitude, ALMA is a role model for many in the LGBTQIA+ community, her music speaking to the
struggles and triumphs of everyday life, with a message of self-acceptance and individuality, which resonates with fans of all ages.

Listeners who have been following Melody A.M. for a while may recall that season 1 of the podcast ended with a special episode looking at
the tremendous work of song-writing and production powerhouse, Max Martin. Having worked with Max Martin’s team on her new album, ALMA tells me about the sound advice and the steer which the man himself offered, in order to help make Time Machine the big pop moment that it is. We also talk politics, what with the recent Finnish elections making it impossible not to and I find out a bit about Helsinki as well as what ALMA loves most about her home country.

On our website, at www.melodyam.com/alma you can also find a playlist dedicated to some of ALMA's finest pop moments.

Country Music Prodigy Connor Smith This week's guest is Connor Smith, a Country Music prodigy. At just 22 years old, he's experienced things people who have been chasing their dreams in Nashville for decades haven't been able to experience. He talked about buying a ticket to every one of Thomas Rhett's headlining concerts, and about how he doesn't have to do that — because he's performing at them!He also has a song called "I Hate Alabama." You're going to want to hear the story behind that one. Also in this episode:Living out childhood dreamsTelling stories through songWhat he has in common with Michael JacksonMeeting your heroesBeing a new artist on the radioCollege Football“Take it slow” song with Ryan HurdThe example of older starsThe impact of social mediaThis episode is sponsored by:Reed Animal ClinicAbout Connor:Just 22 years old and already a seasoned veteran of Nashville’s elite songwriting community, Conner Smith has become one of Country’s most hotly-anticipated new artists – an uncommon talent mixing prime-of-life passion with old-soul perspective. After penning his first song at 6 and scoring a publishing deal at 16, the Country prodigy wrote five of the six songs on his Zach Crowell-produced 2022 debut collection DIDN’T GO TOO FAR (The Valory Music Co.). The charismatic effort laid an artistic foundation that earned Smith 2022 Artist to Watch status from Spotify, Amazon Music, and Opry NextStage, while also making him the only Country artist on Pandora’s Ten List 2022 and securing 2023 recognition from MusicRow Next Big Thing, CMT Listen Up, and more. Often hiding deep-thinking themes in plain sight, Smith scored his first Top 40 hit with the young-at-heart “Learn From It” and followed up with love-savoring “Take It Slow,” which quickly racked up nearly 100 million global streams to date. Tracks like “I Hate Alabama,” “Orange and White,” and “Summer On Your Lips” are my unexpected insight from vivid everyday stories. As Smith grows up in full view of his fans – both on the page and the stage – CMT calls him “an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.” That momentum will keep building in 2023. Smith follows a year of touring alongside Thomas Rhett, Parker McCollum, and Ryan Hurd with upcoming select dates opening for Chase Rice and promises a new batch of “next level” music, further mixing in-the-moment energy with timeless meaning. Smith is currently on the road for his first-ever headline IF I WENT TO COLLEGE TOUR with special guests Mackenzie Carpenter and Jonathan Hutcherson, presented by the Monster Energy Outbreak tour, and joins Luke Bryan’s COUNTRY ON TOUR this summer.https://www.connersmithmusic.com/www.GaryScottThomas.com

Ask your questions on the Scoring Notes podcast Have you ever listened to an episode of the Scoring Notes podcast and wished you could ask a question directly on the show? No?! Never had that desire? But now that I've mentioned the possibility, it sounds like something you'd want to do, right…? Right?

Seriously, we actually do get a lot of questions and suggestions for the podcast, and many of those have made it onto the show in one way or another.

But for our next episode, we thought we'd open up the phone lines directly, so to speak.

So, now's your chance to ask a question about anything in the world of music notation software and related technology — or really, any one of the adjacent subjects we've covered on the Scoring Notes podcast or web site, and we may feature it on our next episode.

Just record your question as a voice memo and drop it directly here, or send it as an email attachment or as a file-sharing link to [email protected]. We'd love it if you provide your name (first name only is OK), where in the world you're calling from, and what music notation software you use — or if you don't use it at all (yes, we have quite a few listeners in that camp).

If you're shy, you can alternatively write your question in an email and send it to us, and we may read it on the show.

Send us your question no later than Wednesday, April 19, 2023, so that we have time to consider it and do the many hours of scholarly research that will no doubt be required, and to formulate a worthy reply in time for our next podcast episode.

The Battle for a Solar-Powered Future An area near the entrance to Death Valley National Park has the capacity to produce enough energy to power the entire planet if covered in solar panels. Yet for Nye County, Nevada residents, the question of what must be sacrificed – including the environmental and economic future of the area – and by whom, looms large. Hillary Angelo is the author of the Harper’s Magazine article, “Boomtown,” which explores the complexity of the solar land rush in the West. Angelo is an urban and environmental sociologist and Associate Professor of Sociology at UC Santa Cruz. Dustin Mulvaney, who was featured in the article, is a solar expert and Professor at San José State University. Alec speaks with Angelo and Mulvaney about the objections of residents, what spaces might be used instead, and how to rethink the future of energy.
