Black People and Yellowstone Park Ep. #67 – If you're Black, have you ever been to Yellowstone Park? Do you even know about it? Taylor Bland is a Conservation Nation Fellow. (You’ll have to listen to this episode to learn what that is). As a Black woman in a White-male dominated field, she wants to give people from underrepresented communities someone to look up to, and go to if they need a pathway into this industry. Taylor is dedicated to helping wolves in Yellowstone National Park in Montana. She started out volunteering for the Wolf Project, but is now getting paid to do what she loves. As a Technician for the Yellowstone Wolf Project and Conservation Nation Fellow, Taylor conducts public outreach and education, tracking and monitoring wolf packs, observing wolf behaviors and helping park visitors see wolves. She is definitely a role model and mentor to younger people who are interested in a career in conversation. Integrating Technology into CDFI Small Business Lending: The Real Deal The last decade has seen a strong push to integrate new financial technologies into CDFI small business lending — a push exacerbated by the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most CDFI small business lenders have begun the integration process, but found it challenging to fully access and reap the benefits of technology in finance (not to mention fintech). This shouldn’t be surprising — experiences with technology across other industries and sectors could have predicted the hurdles to wide-scale adoption and successful implementation. This session identifies the critical issues the CDFI industry — and, crucially, its funders and investors — must address if they are to create value from/reap the benefits of technology: What is Total Cost of Ownership and why does it matter for technology tactical and strategic planning? Policy, process, or technology — which comes first and why? Why/how is scale important in realizing the benefits of technology? How do private and public funding practices create challenges, and what can be done to improve? This conversation features Business Ownership Initiative (BOI) Senior Director Joyce Klein and BOI Senior Fellow Tim Ogden. This webinar was developed as part of the Global Inclusive Growth Partnership, a collaboration between the Aspen Institute and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth. The Rachael Ray Save Them All Grants Since 2017, the partnership between The Rachael Ray Foundation and Best Friends has supported Best Friends Network Partners through millions of dollars in grants to help reduce shelter deaths in communities across the country. The funded projects over the years have varied. Some focused on increasing lifesaving within one shelter. Others used the grant to fund programs to help other communities beyond their own. But they have all shared the same goal of impactful, innovative, and inclusive programming that is helping us get to No-Kill 2025.The grant cycle opens on September 1st, 2022, so this week, we're taking a closer look at the Rachael Ray grants program. What grants are available, who is eligible to receive funding, and what types of programs have received funding in the past?We spoke with Bethany Heins, the director of strategy and network operations for Best Friends, to learn more about the basics, and we also chatted with Ashley Flores from the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam, Kansas. Ashley tells us about their virtual behavior mentorship program - an idea that took flight after they received a Rachael Ray grant in 2022.Interested in taking the Great Plains SPCA's three-week virtual course on building a sustainable behavior program? How A Small Nonprofit Positions for the Future In today's podcast, Mark Rothman, Matt Harms, Jen Tomo from Walk With Sally, and Stephen Halasnik from Financing Solutions discuss how small nonprofits can position themselves for the future. Well-positioned nonprofits are fully prepared to navigate challenges, generate more revenue and run a successful organization. Without positioning, your nonprofit might become inconsistent with communication and can be mistaken by donors and prospects for other organizations performing the same work you do.
Keys to Participatory Nonprofit Strategic Planning Regardless of your nonprofit's size and objectives, you need a plan to define where you want your organization to be in the years ahead as well as the actions you will take to actualize it. A nonprofit's strategic plan is the playbook with the strategies and tactics you will employ while performing your nonprofit's duties. However, a nonprofit strategic plan must have the buy-in of every stakeholder to generate maximum impact. In today's podcast, Dolph Goldenburg from Successful Nonprofits and Stephen Halasnik from Financing Solutions discuss the keys to participatory nonprofit strategic planning.

Behind the Scenes of the Hummingbird House Have you heard our BIG announcement?! We've opened the Hummingbird House where social workers are able to comfortably stay with children who have recently come into care or are between placements instead of in DSS offices, hotels, or, in an extreme case, the jail. The Hummingbird House is a soft place for these children and social workers to land after the whirlwind that got them there. Today Susanna and Abbey tell all and get to the nitty gritty of where the idea started and what has transpired to get to where we are now with the opening of the Hummingbird House. God has woven this story together beautifully, and we cannot wait to welcome in those who need this refuge.

If you have ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors at the Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facilities (PRTFs), this is the episode you don't want to miss. **Trigger Warning: Suicide, Rape, Child Abuse and Neglect**,It is unconscionable to have these repeated abuse and neglect incidents occurring and every person/department responsible for oversight has failed to hold these facilities accountable.  Every incident involves people pointing fingers at each other, while the youth entrusted into the care of these facilities lies in jeopardy.  At what point will Governor Hutchinson and Secretary Gillespie instruct the members of the Child Welfare Agency Review Board to do their jobs and begin sanctioning these facilities?  Despite repeated notifications and letters over the past three years, the state continues to turn its head and look the other direction.   How many more youth need to get chemically restrained, arms and legs broken, or beaten up for the state to do something?  If the current members of the Child Welfare Agency Review Board refuse to do their job, replace them.  We don’t need the fox guarding the hen house!Helpful Links: Suicide & Crisis Hotline - 988Child Welfare Agency Review Board (CWARB)PRTF Database Report a ConcernSubscribe to our NewsletterFunding for the described program provided under Public Law 106-402 as administered by the Governor's Council on Developmental Disabilities for the State of Arkansas. Guardian Ad Litem For more than 30 years, the Guardian ad Litem Program has exclusively represented the best interest of children in the State of Florida court system. In Hillsborough County alone, more than 3,500 neglected, abused, and abandoned children have been removed from their homes and placed in the custody of the dependency court system. With no family available to speak for them, the child’s fate falls into the hands of the courts. Someone Introduces Themselves & You Don't Even Acknowledge Them When someone signs up for your email list, they are introducing themselves. Your response at that moment can be crucial to the future of your relationship. So, when someone introduces themselves to your mission by signing up for your email list, they deserve some acknowledgment, attention, and warmth. How is that accomplished? In the digital world, a "welcome-to-our-email-list" email series is how we show this common courtesy. A "welcome" email series is the polite thing to do. When someone signs up for your email list, they take the initiative to have a relationship with you. When you send a "welcome" email, you offer them a smile and a handshake. It is common courtesy. When done well, a welcome email series is your best opportunity to say hello and turn new acquaintances into donors. This one thing will push your nonprofit into the top one percent of nonprofits worldwide. So few organizations do it that you become known, liked, and trusted. And when donors know, like, and trust you, they enthusiastically give you their treasure! If you are not sending a "welcome" email series to folks that introduce themselves to you, you will never get all the money you need for your mission. A LOT of cash remains on the table that could have been yours. In writing your welcome email series, consider ahead of time what kind of engagement you want. When done right, people are most willing to join your mission with a gift in these emails. The goal is to:Send a couple of nurture emailsIntroduce them to who you are and what you doShare some emotional and engaging core stories Invite them to make a difference with a financial (monthly!) giftConsider:Email #1: Welcome; Introduction; What to expectEmail #2: The problem we uniquely solve; Beneficiary story; CTA (call-to-action) read our blogEmail #3: The problem we uniquely solve: Donor story; CTA join our social media pagesEmail #4: The problem we uniquely solve: Volunteer story; CTA fill out a special abilities Email #5: The opportunity; Make a difference with a giftEmail #6: Ask for feedbackThe hardest thing about implementing a welcome-email series is figuring out what to put in them. Copywriting legend Eugene Schwarts tells us that our goal should be to take our new acquaintances from:Completely unaware: No knowledge of our missionProblem aware: They understand the problem you solveSolution aware: They understand the unique solution you bringProduct aware: They understand the cost of your solutionThe most aware: They are invited to be a part of the solutionPotential donors are introducing themselves to you all the time! You miss a fantastic opportunity to nurture excellent relationships when you don't respond appropriately. Keep saying thank you, telling stories and responding well to people when they introduce themselves to you!David

IPA’s August Government Update August is a quiet month for the government, so it is a good time to take a look at the regulatory big picture.  A lot is happening in Washington, and in this episode, the IPA’s CEO Brian Tate, and Brian Axell, of Axell discuss some of the forces that will shape the industry.   They talk about a potential bill that would change the way credit card transactions are routed, data privacy and cryptocurrency bills, and what the FDIC rules on advertising mean for fintechs. They also talk about why the CFPB may step up its use of guidance and enforcement instead of traditional rule making.    If you want to keep up with what all of this means for your compliance obligations, then join the IPA on September 29 in Chicago for our 2022 Compliance boot Camp. 15. The Pollution of the Fermi 2 Power Plant Jesse Deer In Water, based in Michigan, is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma and a leader in CRAFT (Citizen Resistance At Fermi Two). This grassroots, Indigenous-led environmental activism group is focused on protecting the Great Lakes. The Fermi 2 Power Plant, on the shore of Lake Erie in Newport, Michigan, supplies 20 percent of the power generated by DTE Energy.

Fermi 2 power plant and a neighboring coal plant are polluting the water, air, and land of this area. CRAFT originally formed after the Christmas Day 1993 incident at Fermi2 that resulted in radioactive release due to damage to one of the main turbines, subsequently dumping 1.5 million gallons of untreated toxic, radioactive water into Lake Erie.

With Jesse we talk about what got him into this work, the dangers of the Fermi 2 plant, actions his organization has done, the tie between the Fermi plant and nearby coal plant, and what is stopping the government from making changes.
