Earthshaking Intentions Why, hello

You're certainly no stranger

Fancy meeting you here

My fingers kneading the knots out of your calves

Yours on the back of my

Downward your hazelled gaze, but equal, of course

Locks tickle tease caress my face

Exhaling on my lips

Barely moving oftentimes

I am glad I am sitting down

because I have forgotten what I was supposed to do

forgotten everything and everyone but you

The entirety of world and womb is us

Barely moving oftentimes

But just as oftentimes

In the previous episode, we spoke about the deep and strange relationship between the arid sandy deserts of Sahara and the dense green rainforests of Amazon, the Yin-Yang of it and why we discuss this in Madhushala. One more story was from Bachchan’s childhood, of his birthday and Chamarin Amma (shout out episode 12). Today, we will talk about Bachchan’s friend “Karkal”, nostalgia, and emerald island in Madhushala.

and –

In the previous episode, we time-travelled to Mahabharat era where Guru Drona was testing his students and then we spoke about Koyal’s penance, how it turned white to black. In this episode, we take a walk in the nature and how far and distant objects in the universe are all linked with each other – as displayed in the first Rubaai today.

And –

In the previous episode, we talked about the the Bachchan's struggles for publishing Madhushala as a book for the first time, and then the blessings that he received. We also spoke about "Wants vs Needs". In this episode, let's take a walk towards Hastinapur and meet Karna and Arjun there 🙂

15. How Madhushala became a book | मधुशाला का पहली बार किताब रूप में आना In the previous episode, we discussed the idea of “Life is a long weekend” in Madhushala and what Dr Bachchan said about the convergence of happiness and sorrow in one’s life – and how that reflects in Madhushala. In this episode, let’s talk about the struggles behind publishing Madhushala as a book for the first time.
Life is a long weekend

14. Madhushala – Life is a long weekend | दिन को होली रात दिवाली रोज़ मनाती मधुशाला In the previous episode, we shared a ‘shayarana’ banter between Ghalib, Iqbal, Faraz, et al. We also discussed the story of Professor Amarnath Jha, who was a mentor to Dr Bachchan and how he had decided about his last rituals even when he was alive. In this episode, let’s talk about the happiness and sorrow coming together in life.

And –
And –

In the previous episode, we shared the story of ‘Chamma’ (Lachhminiya aka Chamarin Amma), who was she to newly born Harivansh Rai and what effect she had on his poetry, written much later. There was another story of Bachchan’s birth in ‘Mool Nakshatra’ and what happened because of that! Today we start with some poetic banter between Ghalib, Iqbal and others. There is also a story of Professor Amarnath Jha and how is he related to Dr. Bachchan.

And –
And –

Chamarin Amma in Bachchan's Life (Madhushala) You can read the full script of this episode on Madhushala Blog here.
In the previous episode, we discussed the story behind the name “Harivansh Rai” and of a bad experience Bachchan had as a kid for being a Kayasth, and how this experience impacted his poetry. We continue talking about some of Bachchan’s childhood memories in this episode, especially who was Chamarin Amma (aka Chamma) in Bachchan's life.

And –
And –

There are so many childhood memories from Bachchan's life that cannot be told in one episode, so watch out for more 🙂

In the previous episode, we talked about the reaction of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi when he heard Madhushala for the first time and also what Madhushala says about the caste and religion. Today, an interesting story from Lucknow, but before that a bit about Marsiya.
And –

The theme of this and new few episodes will be what Madhushala says about religions and castes.

From the grapes of experiences and imagination – the poet has created this wine called Haala and welcomes the world to his House of Wine, aka Madhushala.
And then the poet who has sacrificed the sweetness of his life, will shower the joys of Madhushala on the readers / listeners of his poem.

Women in Bachchan's Life – Shyama, the first wife | Madhushala Bachchan Ji's first wife – Shyama, Shelly's Skylark |

Circa 1926, we are talking about Shyama, who was just 14 years old when she got married to Bachchan, who was barely 19. We will share the story about their love and life journey, and how Bachchan ji found her to be a free-spirited, always joyful, cheerful girl, like Shelley’s Skylark – “an unbodied joy whose race is just begun”.
She was smiling even in her death, something that is expressed in this line –
She was also the first one who could see a great poet in Bachchan and did everything in her powers to keep his poetry going. It was during her lifetime that “Madhushala” was written and published. She made a huge impact even in her short life.
Bachchan used to call her “Joy” and she called him “Suffering” – why? Let’s find out! 🙂

In the previous episode, we discussed what's common between the movie "Midnight in Paris" and Madhushala. We also spoke about the types of Nostalgia. Let's take another journey down memory lane in this episode…

And –

And –
And –

In this episode, Madhushala talks about hitting the Crossroads (say Writers' Block) when one doesn't know what to do! And an interesting Hindi word –
And –

Circa 1950s to 1970s – That there was a bond between Acharya Rajneesh aka OSHO and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan is not a common knowledge. There were similarities between Osho’s preaching and the messages from Madhushala even though Madhushala was written when Osho was a toddler. It is said that he was inspired by Madhushala and other poems of Bachchan ji, which is reflected in his sermons and at his Ashrams.
Or this when it comes to Dhyaan or Meditation –
Or this when it comes to dancing in a state of trance –
There was also a fallout between Osho and Dr Bachchan, how and why? Let’s take a listen 🙂
In between, we also talk about the movie “Rose Island” when re read these lines –

And then the poet who has sacrificed the sweetness of his life, will shower the joys of Madhushala on the readers / listeners of his poem.

Madhushala – First Public Appearance | मधुशाला पहली बार, शिवाजी हाल | Ep 1 Hindi Poetry, Stories, History December 1933 – the very first public recitation of Madhushala, at Shivaji Hall – Kashi University and the magical effect it had on the audience. First day was common for several poets but by the end of the day, Madhushala became such a rage that everybody wanted a day dedicated only to Bachchan and his Madhushala – the poem had a mesmerizing effect on her audience. The chairperson of the event – Manoranjan Prasad ji even wrote several parodies, which were recited during the breaks. One such parody was –

Madhushala – चर्चा बरेली की, एक आत्महत्या | Charcha Bareilly Ki, a Suicide| Ep 17 Hindi Poetry, Stories, History Bareilly has played a very important and dramatic role in Bachchan’s life. Circa 1938, it’s just been about a year since the death of Shyama, the first wife of Shri Harivansh Rai Bachchan. He has not written any new poem since her passing but attends poetry events (Kavi Sammelan) for his own peace (स्वांत: सुखाय). One such invite came from Bareilly and this is where he comes across an admirer of his poetry, who commits suicide in front of the very train that Mr Bachchan was travelling on.
सब चले किए सिर नीचे – ले अरमानों की झोली;
But, can his poetry be termed ‘Morbid’, or be held responsible to driving one to end his/her life? Madhushala does not urge people to do this, even in its sadness, some such lines:
We also talk about an English poet AE Houseman, whose poetry actually urged people to end their life if it becomes a burden. He said, “And if your hand or foot offend you – Cut it off, lad, and be whole; But play the man, stand up and end you – When your sickness is your soul”
Bareilly was yet to give another dramatic role in Bachchan’s life – stay tuned to know more 😉

That’s what we did before COVID wave surged again. So, this Bonus Episode takes a break from Madhushala stories, and goes into a small village called Jibhi, in Himachal where we spent over a month. We talk about the life in the hills and some short poems inspired by these pristine hills, different times of the day and the simplicity of people and life. Poems, such as:
Or:
Or:
Hope you like this episode. Let me know your thoughts 🙂

16. Madhushala, OSHO – Acharya Rajneesh and Bachchan Circa 1950s to 1970s – That there was a bond between Acharya Rajneesh aka OSHO and Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan is not a common knowledge. There were similarities between Osho’s preaching and the messages from Madhushala even though Madhushala was written when Osho was a toddler. It is said that he was inspired by Madhushala and other poems of Bachchan ji, which is reflected in his sermons and at his Ashrams. Such as –
Or this when it comes to Dhyaan or Meditation –
Or this when it comes to dancing in a state of trance –
There was also a fallout between Osho and Dr Bachchan, how and why? Let’s take a listen 🙂
In between, we also talk about the movie “Rose Island” when re read these lines –

We are also talking about the presence of joy and sorrow at the same time and how it’s reflected in these lines of Madhushala – “जगा करेगा अविरत मरघट, जगा करेगी मधुशाला”. Then we briefly touch upon the musical impact of Alankar in some of his lines.

4. Bachchan's Madhushala, Yin and Yang Year 1935 – it was quite a struggle to publish Madhushala for the first time. Abhyuday Press where Bachchan Ji used to work, was dilly dallying for a year, so Bachchan had to take the matter in his own hands – using all possible resources at his disposal and with friends, he founded a press called “Sushma Nikunj”, which became the first publisher of Madhushala, and subsequently of Madhubala and Madhukalash.
Then we talk about the symbols used here, such as, skies, earth, stars and an interdependent eco-system, the Yin-Yang kind of relationship via Madhushala.
We are also talking about Bachchan ji reliving his past when he sees his dead friends Karkal and Champa into his new friends Shri Krishna and Rani. Kind of Augmented Reality!

5. Bachchan's Madhushala, Mandir Masjid Circa 1938 – Bachchan sahab went to Indore for a Kavi Sammelan, where Mahatma Gandhi was the guest of honor. Somebody complained to Gandhi ji that Madhushala is an alcoholic’s poetry. Bachchan was terrified when Gandhi ji summoned him but he went ahead to meet him. Gandhi ji asked him to recite some of his poems, Bachchan smartly picked up two verses. Do take a listen to know which ones were those 🙂
Filhaal chalein Madhushala ke safar par?

6. Bachchan's Madhushala, Unmaad Taral, Ullas Chapal Circa 1934 – Madhushala was heavily criticized in its initial days thanks to its general perception as an ode to liquor. Ramvriksha Verma ‘Benipuri’ of Yogi weekly magazine even threatened to shoot him if Bachchan ever came to Patna. Bachchan never responded to such criticism by speaking in public but he used to respond with his poetry and he wrote one poem on this threat too, Sunna Chahenge?

In this episode we will also talk about the time when Bachchan was very sick and also some poems on not living a free life.

7. Bachchan's Madhushala, Pehli Baar December 1933 – the very first public recitation of Madhushala, at Shivaji Hall – Kashi University and the magical effect it had on the audience.
