Busy Philipps is Doing Her Best It's me, your friend Busy Philipps! My creative partner Caissie St. Onge & I love making things that we believe people need & will love & we’ve had so many plans. We had plans to do a TV show that would shake up late night! And we think it kinda did! For six months. We adored our genius, scrappy creative team at “Busy Tonight” as much as we loved our audience, so when we broke the news that we’d been canceled, we vowed to get back up & make even bigger plans to invent a whole new way of doing things in the entertainment biz, to reunite our beautiful staff & change the game for everyone! An entertainment Utopia! And we were so close, then...the world changed. Now those plans are, at the very least, on hold. So, we've shifted gears, like everyone has had to, & with our friend, comedian & former “Busy Tonight” writer, Shantira Jackson, we're just doing our best, taking it slow & talking to fascinating friends about how *they* are doing *their* best. They’ll tell us all about those times in their lives when a set

Michael Galinsky 'All the Rage' NEW: Support This is HCD by taking one of our courses https://www.thisishcd.com/courses

Hello and welcome to Bringing Design Closer. Our goal is to have conversations that inspire and to help move the dial forward for organisations to become more human-centred in their approach to solving complex business and societal problems.
This is HCD is almost 5-years old. We’ve been creating content regularly for that period of time, and if you want to help us out - please leave a review for us wherever you are listening. Those lovely algorithms love reviews, as it helps us grow our community - every little helps. Even if you don’t review, you can go one better by telling people you work with about the podcast.
In this episode I speak with Michael Galinsky, a movie director, documentary maker and musician based in North Carolina in the states. For anyone that follows me on Twitter, they might have seen a thread a number of weeks ago where I spoke about back pain. Late last year, I woke with pain in my left hand side of my back, and contributed it to being a Dad, lifting little people, being out of shape, sitting down for larger periods of time etc. I went to my physio and had several sessions before Christmas and to little or no state change. Christmas was sore. I was more grumpy than usual and entered January and had a private MRI scan. That in itself was an interesting experience, and one for another episode, but my GP called me and said “one of your discs is protruding” and possibly on a nerve. I was shocked. I’d heard about herniated discs but now I had one! I actually got stiffer after for a few weeks.
Was this what my life was going to be like? Is this what middle age feels like? Sheesh - if it is, then this isn’t much fun.
Then I Tweeted.
What came back was a lot of support and advice. Emma Blomkamp, read something in a newsletter by Kai Brach several months prior and tagged Kai, and Kai mentioned a doctor called Dr John Sarno in the States. He encouraged me to Google and watch some stuff. Sarno’s work states that many people have herniated discs but what is the cause for lots of back pain is stress and hidden life traumas. I was instantly skeptical. But I spent 2 hours that night watching lectures of Sarno’s in NYU on YouTube. I was shocked. Last year was brutal. Running a business and balancing everything has been hard on me and hard on my own mental health. Maybe, just maybe there was something in this.
Then Michael tweeted to me. He’s created an awesome documentary called All the Rage several years ago and I bought it on iTunes and watched it. It explores the relationship between the mind and the body. Sarno encourages people to try exercise and ‘watch’ for the stressors. I did exactly this. I cut the grass. I went for a short walk with the kids. I gave them a piggy back and to my surprise, nothing.
Was this in my head?
In this episode, I speak with Michael about working directly with Dr Sarno in the creation of the documentary and explore deeper about the background to Michaels own journey - something that under pinned the narrative of the documentary.
This is a brilliant episode and one for all - even if you don’t suffer back pain. You will find this fascinating.

Therapy Session Part 2 - Mental Health Reached a milestone with this one! Episode 100 is finally here. My cousin Ashley (@Ashleyb_hair) joined me to discuss the importance of maintaining your mental health and paying attention to the people around you. Ashley shares her history with her mother and her transition from a loving mom to an unhealthy situation. What I learned from this episode is to pay attention to changes and never play with words because there are people who are suffering from the things people take lightly.

How old is too old in politics? Should there be an age limit in politics? An American wannabe pollie reckons people should get kicked out at 72. It's a pretty controversial idea, so naturally, we sent reporter Claudia Long out to pound the hallways of Parliament House and asked political journos what they think the expiry date should be.

Plus, have you been having super intense dreams or insomnia since the pandemic? It's not in your imagination. There's research to back it up.

And, we mostly hear about mums getting postnatal depression, but dads can get it too. It's just not discussed as much, but some people are trying to change that.

Live guests
Max Chandler-Mather, Greens MP
Dr Melinda Jackson, Monash University
Mitch McPherson, Speak Up Stay Chatty
Why are you calling me? Picture this: you're minding your own business when your phone starts ringing. Why is someone calling, and why don't they just text? How dare they.

In the olden days people would wait by the phone for a call. Now, we shudder at the thought of having to answer a stranger at the end of the line. And it's causing tension in the workplace. So what are we afraid of?

And, the spicy cough is striking again, with some people on their second, third, even fourth round of COVID in a couple of months since their last infection. Some experts thought immunity would last longer, but then Omicron happened.

Plus, a big call was made about trans athletes who compete in swimming, and activists say it's transphobic.

Live guests
Dr Kirsty Short, University of Queensland
Karen Gately, HR expert
Sally Goldner, trans activist
This town's rich in mining but kids are still dying There are only six mental health beds in the Goldfields for a population of 60,000 — and none of them are for minors. The community is begging for a youth mental health ward ASAP to prevent any further loss.

Plus, our native ingredients industry is thriving, but without proper regulation, a lot of Indigenous Australians are worried it's woven with cultural insensitivity and exploitation.

And, a government report card for the environment does not read well, and we've got work to do. Or, the new government has work to do.

Live guests:
Dr Skye Kinder
Pat Torres, Mayi Harvests Native Foods
Kelly O'Shanassy, Australian Conservation Foundation
Shedding the glam for a glow down Gabrielle from Perth was so sick of people on TikTok setting unrealistic beauty standards in their "glow up" videos that she decided to set a new challenge: the glow down.

And people really got into it in a big way.

Is this a new way to have healthy body image on social media? Or are glam, buff, botoxed bods taking up too much space already.

Also, we'll find out why a Logies speech has resulted in a high rape profile trial being delayed and discuss whether new offence laws in Victoria are just enough or go too far.

Guests:
Claudia Long, Hack's political reporter
Stephen Blanks, NSW Council of Civil Liberties
Lauren French, sexologist
Fangirls rule the internet in 'Everything I Need, I Get From You' Fangirls often don't get taken seriously in pop culture. But in her new book, Everything I Need, I Get From You: How Fangirls Created the Internet as We Know It, culture reporter Kaitlyn Tiffany explores just how much fangirls have shaped online life. She talks with guest host B.A. Parker about how fans used Tumblr to transform internet culture, how being a One Direction fan enriched her own life and why fandom is more complicated than we might think. Called to Be The Light + Honoring the Light of Diamond DeYampert This episode is honor and life of the beautiful light found, Diamond DeYampert, Pastor of The Freedom Room - “Thee Reverend Bestie”(rest in heaven)Sitting here just a little after 10 pm... scrolling on my personal Instagram because, to be honest, I often forget to check in over there outside of the podcast page. While scrolling I am reminded that life is precious and timely as I stumble across a heartbroken post. Not that it was personal for me, but a beautiful face had my curious mind in wonder… “Why the heartbreak?” Well, I soon discovered The Freedom Room page out of Detroit. Curiously enough l started to read and acknowledge some amazing work of the Lord be done. At this time I was still wasn’t sure who the pretty face was on account of what I was looking at. A few moments later and a couple of posts later… I realized that the pretty face was the pastor and founder!! Wow. Of course, I wanted to find her personal Instagram page to see more of whom I had just discovered. As I look upon her story unfolding in the delight of things chosen to be publicly shared. I was deeply encouraged by the fight, her fight at the goodness of the Lord. Looking at what was exposed was quickly admired and recognized as impact. I was moved and greatly appreciated for willingness and courage to not only be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ; but the light amid her darkness, her community, and the beloved city of Detroit. While my eyes were open to see the beautiful Diamond DeYampert, my heart ached because it was only in her death. What a purpose of leaving here in life that even in death; there will be LIGHT!! I am completely honored to know her name. Not in life, but light. FOREVER. Fly high sis. Heaven awaits you. - Keanna (notes from my iPhone)The Freedom Room Detroit Prayer Session: https://youtu.be/z8u9OsIGo1kListen to Song "Found" by Diamond DeYampert: https://youtu.be/nkVQWMoMPYwFollow The Freedom Room Detroit on IG: https://www.instagram.com/thefreedomroom/Listen to The Student Leadership Podcast w/ Diamond DeYampert Ep. #85 & #87: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-student-leadership-podcast/id1548224471?i=1000550312990https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-student-leadership-podcast/id1548224471?i=1000551102651Listen on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Buzzsprout, iheart radio, Pandora, and now on the She Believed He Could buzzsprout site: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1359799Hey sis! Hebrews 12:1
The Future of Business is Personal Leadership ripples throughout the work environment. In modern society, leading another person takes collaboration. Effective leadership hones empathy, motivation, accountability, and practicality. Architects work in a similar way of trying to understand their role as collaborators toward a greater goal. Welcome to the inaugural season of Architecture 5 10 20! I’m your host, Guy Geier, Managing Partner of FXCollaborative Architects in New York. Guests from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences related to the built environment will come to share their thought leadership. Our conversations will start with understanding how they arrived at what they’re doing now. More importantly, we will focus on discussing their vision for the future, looking out 5, 10, and 20 years. Today, we’re joined by Winnie da Silva, a business coach focused on leadership development and enhanced team performance. Winnie’s portfolio consists of a wide range of business leaders, including many in the architecture and design professions. Her background in social work shaped her holistic coaching style leading to enhanced team dynamics and company culture. As organizations restructure themselves to the post-pandemic hybrid workplace, Winnie’s insights into the future of leadership and work-life balance will be more important than ever. Listen to Winnie speak about which characteristics she often observes in strong teams, efficient team members, and effective leaders. There is a shared responsibility mindset that causes individuals of all levels to be aligned on the value of what makes them a team. Winnie describes the balance needed to maintain a modern work environment and explores the benefits of teams that embrace diversity of thought and experience. Her thoughts on work environments encourage a positive view of interdependent work for a solid team. Through continued self reflection, Winnie helps shape the leaders of tomorrow to work through their blindspots, raising their self-awareness and resiliency to resolve the complexity of team dynamics and career advancement. Winnie’s leadership training looks past the dated separation of work and home, and embraces an integration of the professional and personal. Listen to how Winnie is helping the future leader leverage all that they are to redefine organizational identity. Time stamps: [01:39] - Winnie da Silva recalls what led her to go out on her own as a business coach. [03:04] - How did working as a social worker influence Winnie’s coaching style? [06:00] - Winnie lived all over the world. She talks about how interacting with diverse crowds impacted her. [08:11] - Leadership principles are generally similar across industry. [11:21] - Winnie explores the similarities and nuances of leadership in architecture. [14:01] - Why are mid-level roles the hardest to navigate? [16:40] - Winnie comments on the new model of work that involves complexity. [19:01] - Winnie emphasizes the need to train and support leaders as the work environment continues to shift. [21:57] - What are the key factors of building winning teams? [24:00] - What are the key factors of high performing team members? [25:59] - Winnie explores the benefits of teams that embrace diversity of thought and experience. [28:45] - What are specific characteristics of leadership that people should invest into? The Future of Sustainable Infrastructure Sustainability focuses on how we as people coexist with the planet. What does it take to build designs in an adaptive capacity? As professionals of the built environment, we have the expertise to guide design to a path that benefits the planet and society. Today, we’re joined by Fiona Cousins, the Arup’s Americas Region Chair, and a sustainability specialist whose leadership in energy efficiency and resilient high-performance building design has shaped both public and private environmental policy. Fiona’s career in mechanical engineering has allowed her to provide a deeper insight into the importance of improved building systems and adaptive infrastructure. As achieving the highest level of sustainability becomes ubiquitous in the design and construction industry, Fiona’s experience and her vision of the future of the built environment can inspire further transformation. Listen to Fiona speak about designing with resilience and adaptive capacity for the triple bottom line of economic, environmental, and social impacts. Design constraints around projects became more complicated as society demanded intentional, impact-driven spaces. Design criteria is not limited to a “nice” building, but the process now questions the ripple effect of design choices. Fiona points out how this is especially true in a city-based project as she recalls the thrilling and challenging process for completing Fulton Street Station in New York City. As the design process evolves, how can we promote and advance the existing sustainability metrics to address tomorrow today? Fiona’s work is a testament to the need to approach environmental change at the individual and systemic levels simultaneously. Larger sustainability goals must be met through enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration, resulting in not only the preservation of humanity, but also, of the planet. Time stamps: [01:43] - Fiona Cousins talks about paving her path as an engineer when there weren’t many women in the field. [04:35] - How did Fiona start working with sustainability? [06:42] - Fiona gives her thoughts on pay-back-calculations when including sustainability in building designs. [09:17] - Listen to Fiona proudly talk about the collaborative efforts to complete the Fulton Street Station in NYC. [12:05] - What is the impact we can make as experts of the built environment? [14:21] - Sustainability focuses on how we as people coexist with the planet. [16:20] - Fiona discusses resilience and adaptation in architecture that needs to be responsive to the environment. [18:08] - Social issues also really matter in design criteria alongside environmental impact. [19:53] - How important is the LEED accreditation system? [22:22] - Fiona explores the connection between sustainability and digital tools to improve measurements. [24:42] - You lose and gain information throughout the design process. Listen to Fiona describe how this happens. [27:29] - What does it mean to “go deep” on your craft? [29:31] - Develop a commitment to learning. [31:08] - Thank you Fiona for reminding us of the need to approach environmental change individually and systematically. Links / Resources: Guy Geier Instagram Fiona Cousins

Let’s go...

CATH WALLIS: from no hobbies to ultramarathons and living life big in her body We did not want to leave you with anything while we take a little break so we have searched back through the FORTY archives to bring you some of our favourite episodes of the past.
At 40, Cath Wallis realised she had no hobbies – having focussed entirely on her career and family - and decided to carve out time for herself by signing up for a 100km trek, after only walking as far as 5km around her local lake. As you do. Now 45, Cath has completed seven ultra-marathons, trekked across frozen Mongolian lakes, sand dunes in the Gobi Desert, and even swum from Europe to Asia. More importantly, she’s helping break barriers around endurance events being only suited to young and/or athletic folk.
As a self-proclaimed plus-size adventurer at 110kg, Cath’s all about living life BIG in the body she has. Not only has she got the mental and physical toughness to conquer challenges, but she’s ditched the fear and embarrassment around not being ‘the best’; not always needing to excel, instead just needing to enjoy. Every woman has a story to tell. This is Cath’s.

‘On the Divide’: Fighting for Choice in the Rio Grande Valley For years, McAllen, Texas, has been at the front lines in the struggle for reproductive access in the country. The city has only one abortion provider, the Whole Woman’s Health Clinic, serving more than one million people in the area. It took them seven years, but filmmakers Maya Cueva and Leah Galant documented the community’s story, trying to look past the polarizing sides of the debate, to focus on how people live in the gray areas of those two extremes.

In this episode, they discuss their documentary “On the Divide” and explore the following question: What does choice mean without any options?
