From Nixon to Hillary, we've had a long cast of recurring characters in the hit American Drama series: The Presidential Election. In the contexts of almost all of these speeches, volatile and polarized social and political climates result in elections full of mischief and inconsistency, the discontents of which must be addressed while simultaneously conveying a formal concession to Democracy's decision. How the candidates articulate their words on the victor, and how they stand behind him with dignity, is a truer test of their fitness for the presidency than any debate.

Legacy Sequels: Afterlife Part II, The Revenge There are four qualifications for a movie to be a legacy sequel. The movie takes place further down the timeline in an already established universe’s continuity. It focuses on new characters, but still has original characters present in the plot.Does this episode count? We talked about legacy sequels for the first time a few months ago. Now, we’re picking up in the same continuity and Stephen’s experience will drive a significant portion of the early part of this episode, while Caleb, Larissa, and Ben remain present in the conversation as well. Maybe this episode does count as a legacy sequel. Either way, this month’s episode was an excuse for the team to watch a bunch of really good movies. We explored three decades of classics with Rocky, Ghostbusters, and Jumanji. Then we tackled their legacy sequels that have all come out in the last decade, Creed, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.Jurassic Park is the subject of this episode’s Spotlight. Our guest is Bill Silkworth. You can find his YouTube channel Mr Movie Lover here, which includes his own video on Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Bill is introduced around the 57:16 mark. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. You can find out more about this show at storytellingbreakdown.com. Episode 27 – How Many Threads Connect Us to a Changing Way of Life – Ed Davis and Manda Kalimian How man threads connect us to a changing way of life? A boxcar, a spiral notebook and a pencil, the root of the “origin story” of author Ed Davis who has penned The Last Professional. Larry explores that “origin story” and how Ed’s early life riding boxcars inspired him to write about a yesteryear of “hobos, tramps and bums” and which are wonderers. Are the characters running away from something or towards something else and what the power of freedom is to the mind. Ed also talks about how the soundtrack of boxcar life is the rhythm of the rails and how it is juxtaposed against the rhythm of writing. Is wanderlust part of a persons DNA?

Rory Vecsey joins the program and has a conversation with Manda Kalimian founder of the CANA Foundation, political action committee Saddle PAC and author of Born to Rewild. Rory, being a horse person herself explores what it is like to fall in love with horses, the treatment of wild horses by the Federal Government (including roundups via helicopter and confinement using taxpayer dollars) so wild lands can be used for fracking, farming or grazing cattle, slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada and how this all contributes to climate change. Manda also discusses solutions and introduces us all to her concept of “rewilding”, re-introducing wild horses back to their habitat.

Episode 28 – How Many Threads Connect Us to a Journey – S.J. Rozan & Tom Clavin How many threads connect us to a journey? S. J. Rozan joins the program along with her feline companion to speak about her latest work Family Business, a work nominated for the G.P Putnam’s Sons Sue Grafton Memorial Award. Along with articulating the complexities of Chinatown, the Tong organized crime family, and the hierarchy of Chinese culture, S. J. and Larry draw a comparison between the film In the Heights comparing “abuela” in latin culture and “gao” in Tong culture. S.J. also posited that there are 2 things a writer cannot do to a reader and how sidekicks are a must in crime fiction.

Returning to the podcast is Larry’s old friend Tom Clavin. Tom has returned to speak with Larry about his old friend and collaborative co-author Phil Keith who recently passed, and to talk about his book Lightning Down, the story of Lt. Joe Moser, a P-38 Lightning pilot downed in World War II. Tom speaks about his love of research in preparation for writing, his love of military aircraft and how it played into his love for the P-38. In his research for the book, Tom learned of a chance encounter between Lt. Moser and a bomber crew member years after the war and their amazing connection. Larry and Tom also reflect on how Moser may have interacted with the fellow who inspired the character 007, James Bond. Please also check out Tom’s newest work To the Uttermost Ends of the Earth, which chronicles a US Civil War naval battle off the coast of Europe.
Episode 29 – How Many Threads Lead Us to the Conviction of an Innocent Man? Charlies Bosworth Jr. & Joel Schwartz How many threads lead us to the conviction of an innocent man? This week Larry Davidson sits down with author Charles Bosworth Jr. and defense attorney Joel Schwartz to talk about their collaborative book Bone Deep: Untangling the Betsy Faria Murder Case. Bone Deep recounts the unjust conviction of Russell Faria and Joel’s fight to prove his innocence. Larry, Charles and Joel discuss the facts of the case, the danger of small-town politics and how media attention can affect a trial. They also explore how confirmation bias can override logic in a court case and how you fight for justice when the police are more focused on being right than finding the truth. They also discuss the NBC mini-series The Thing About Pam, which is an adaptation of the case. In a society fascinated with true crime and murderers, Charles and Joel hope to bring more attention to Betsy Faria and other victims. Larry wraps up the episode with the question “what did I get wrong?”-a question that is more pertinent than ever in a world where facts need to be protected and truthful self-assessment is more important than ever.

Curse of Strahd Campaign Diary Episode 002: Into The Mists It doesn’t get much more classic than Ravenloft and Barovia, two of D&D’s most beloved settings. Come along with Stephen and Ben as the former takes you further down the rabbit hole of his run of Curse of Strahd. Curse of Strahd is one of the most popular modules built for 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons and has roots going back to the beginnings of the game. Each run of the module is different, so even if you have played it before, you’ve never played it like this. In the first episode, Stephen walked us through the preparation and the first real sessions. Now it is time to descend to the heart of darkness as the players take their first steps into the twisted landscape of Barovia. Beginning with a brief adventure on the Sword Coast and ending with an ominous prophecy, this episode will have you wondering does anything good happen in Barovia? All in due time. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Novel of the Apes: On T.C. Boyle's Talk To Me, Amitav Ghosh, and Animals in Fiction In T.C.Boyle's 2021 novel Talk To Me, one of the main characters is a chimpanzee. It's a fascinating study in how humans respond to other apes, and an ambitious experiment in imagining what it might be like to be one. Using the novel as a starting point, in this solo episode I explore whether learning to love chimpanzees can help break down the human/animal divide, and how Boyle's portrayal of Sam the chimpanzee differs from other novels about animals. I also draw on Amitav Ghosh's The Nutmeg's Curse to argue for the importance of giving voice to nonhuman characters in fiction, and the unique role stories are able to play.Learn more about Talk to Me here: https://www.harpercollins.com/products/talk-to-me-tc-boyleLearn more about The Nutmeg's Curse: https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/N/bo125517349.htmlRead an excerpt of The Nutmeg's Curse on brutes and storytelling animals (how this podcast got its name): https://orionmagazine.org/article/brutes/Read the essay I mentioned on orangutans: http://newsocialist.org.uk/red-apes/Join our next book club on The Ministry for the Future: https://daytonmartindale.com/book-club/Subscribe to the free weekly Storytelling Animals newsletter: https://apple6.aweb.page/p/de4ee963-cd8d-4ced-9975-e13965236a7dSupport this podcast with a monthly donation on Patreon: https://patreon.com/storytellingpodFollow this podcast on Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaytonRMartindLike this podcast on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Storytelling-Animals-105986165338395 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Adventurers Assemble Campaign Diary Episode 002: Shrine of the Emperor of Bones Adventurer down! We’re being vague here so we don’t spoil what happened in the first episode if you haven’t gotten to listen to it yet. SB Hosts Ben Clemmer and Stephen Stachofsky are bringing you campaign diaries, inviting you to hear the tales of their Dungeons & Dragons games as told by the Dungeon Masters. Welcome to the second session of Adventurers Assemble. When we last saw our heroes, they were exploring the Shrine of the Emperor of Bones, dangerous ground for any adventurers, but especially a group of level one characters. The clock is ticking as the party splits up to rescue a fallen comrade, while also recruiting the help they need to get through the shrine and rescue the children trapped underground. There’s skeletons, zombies, illusions, hideouts, betrayal, and a particularly dangerous set of chairs in this chapter of our story. Ben and Stephen discuss adjusting plotlines on the fly, reskinning characters who appear in multiple campaigns, and how this group of five is going to survive, or risk becoming a group of four or less very quickly. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Happy Birthday, Henry David Thoreau: On Walden and Social Justice, with Alda Balthrop-Lewis Today marks the 205th birthday of Henry David Thoreau, and to celebrate, I brought on Alda Balthrop-Lewis, author of Thoreau's Religion: Walden Woods, Social Justice, and the Politics of Asceticism. Why (if at all) does Thoreau still matter? How did he engage with the political issues of his time, in particular slavery and the advances of industrial capitalism? Do the ascetic practices he engaged in at Walden Pond have any lessons for the contemporary environmentalist?Learn more about Alda's book here: https://www.cambridge.org/us/academic/subjects/religion/religious-ethics/thoreaus-religion-walden-woods-social-justice-and-politics-asceticism?format=HBRead her analysis of Thoreau's critique of philanthropy here (also a response to the 2015 anti-Thoreau New Yorker article I mistakenly attribute to The Atlantic in the podcast): https://religiondispatches.org/thoreaus-ferocious-critique-of-philanthropy-does-not-make-him-selfish/Read my 2017 article on Thoreau, from which I quote in the intro, here: https://inthesetimes.com/article/the-abolitionist-of-walden-pondAlda's book focuses on Walden, Thoreau's most famous work and the one most relevant to her argument about political asceticism. Make Room For Joy in Your Life // Black Woman Affirmations, Joy for Black Women, Meditations for Black Women, Self Improvement, Love Letters to Black Women, Hi there Beautiful,
Black women deserve an easy life and I am making space for more joy, ease and flow in my life by decluttering and downsizing my physical, mental, spiritual space for joy and abundance.
I am creating a life I am actually in love with and it starts with letting things, mindsets, old habits and limiting beliefs go.
What will you let go of to make room for more joy in your life?
You deserve joy.
You deserve your best you.
much love and joy,
Alecia

how do you change your life for the better?
take the first step.
Black Woman, you are already enough, take the first step to change your life and follow your dreams.
Give yourself more chances to win.
We can plan all day long, but if we fail to execute, to try, to take the first step, our perfectionism gets in the way.
Use this video as motivation to take the leap of faith and try.
You're worthy.
Change your life for the better in small steps.
much love and joy,
Alecia

Mergedworlds - A Dungeons & Dragons Storytelling - Episode 80 Seraph, Deacon and Moogan reach the City-State of Medrenal in their search for Dina, chasing after the group of Aurumanians also on her trail. A great city divided in sections, they search for any sign of Dina and their enemy while a shadowy figure watches on.

Mergedworlds - A Dungeons & Dragons Storytelling - Episode 82 Artis and her allies finally reach the Kingdom of Caradon. After receiving a warm welcome they begin their journey east towards the castle, though the path may not be quite as inviting as its people.
Episode 233: ‘Venn Diagram‘ (Bruce Wang) Where do Nerds end and Perverts begin - and are you down for a little Hard Justice while bent over the hood of a Batmobile? When Bruce Wang’s long lost lover returns from Australia, she needs Bruce’s help to get her mojo back. He wants to help - and where better than ComicCon?! Brace yourselves, dear listener, cause there’s a lot of Cameos in this episode: Wolverine, Catwoman, Doctor Who, Superman, AquaMan, Boy Robin, Deadpool, that super hot Centaur guy from the Old Spice commercial - but thankfully, Squirrel Girl never makes an appearance. The Storytelling Of Staged Combat The idea of “show, don’t tell” allows creators to communicate ideas to those experiencing their stories through sensory details. You can learn a lot about a character and their world by watching how they interact in a given space. You’ll likely learn even more in watching them fight. Combat is an element of so many significant pieces of media we have and haven’t covered yet on Storytelling Breakdown. From Marvel to Star Wars or from The Witcher to The Princess Bride, we can learn so much about characters from watching them contend with an opponent. The openings not taken, using an enemy’s tactics against them, and the preparation that can go sideways in an instant make this deep dive with Casey Stombaugh a blast for all involved. Hook is the subject of this episode’s Spotlight. Our guest is Ben Murphy and he is introduced around the 01:23:20 mark. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Angela Andrews: A Different Way Maybe you’re the kind of person who can focus intently on detailed, analytical work. And maybe you think that makes you a little different from other people. In this episode, program host David Otey (https://davidotey.com/) has a conversation with Angela Andrews, a data scientist who freely admits to being different from most people—being neurodiverse, in fact. Listen to how she has turned that to her advantage, and learned a different way of speaking up.

Black Women Are Not My Competition. We Can All Win // Black woman affirmations, Self Love for Black Women, The Love Letter Project Podcast, Affirmations for Black Girls, Community, Meditations Hi there Beautiful,
Black women are amazing. Period.
I have envied Black women, but Black women aren't my competition.
I am unlearning scarcity mindsets as a Black women and adopting a more abundant mindset.
Jealousy and envy among Black women is destroying us.
Where does it come from?
We can all eat. We can all thrive and do well, especially if we come together as a community.
We like to talk about crabs in a barrel, but who is creating the barrel?
Scarcity is manufactured and we need to opt out of competition and opt into community.
Black Women are not your competition, they are your community. You are safe.

Our Flag Means Death, A Swashbuckling Debut How did it take us this long to get here? Pirates have had an up and down cinematic history. While classic pirate images come to mind from the earliest days of Hollywood filmmaking, the genre was considered cursed for several decades before a movie with “Curse” in the title brought the genre into a renaissance. And it is a genre we are finally discussing. Our Flag Means Death takes this genre to fascinating depths with the craft of one of the most creative directors working today *cough* Taika Waititi. Rhys Darby turns in a phenomenal performance as Stede Bonnet. Historic pirates get new takes in a story that sees clashes with the Royal Navy, shows the transformative powerful of authentic relationships, and explores the terrible expectations of toxic masculinity. Peacemaker is the subject of this episode’s Spotlight. Our guest is Caleb Linnemeier and he is introduced around the 01:08:32 mark. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Adventurers Assemble Campaign Diary Episode 001: Welcome to Murktown This was a long time coming. Dungeons & Dragons has surged in popularity so much in the last decade. All four of Storytelling Breakdown’s hosts currently actively play or DM in at least one campaign. After blogs and episodes dedicated to RPGs, SB Hosts Ben Clemmer and Stephen Stachofsky host a series of campaign diaries, inviting you to take a seat at their tables and experience the tales told by the Dungeon Masters. Our story begins in Murktown, a location Ben borrowed from a homebrew module. Murktown is an old village in the Fairknot Region of the continent of Omeria. For ages it has served as a trading post. There hasn’t been an attack on Murktown in hundreds of years, but there hasn’t been a noble living in the keep to call for aid for even longer. There is a river that flows through the town to the bay and three bridges connecting the two largest neighborhoods, Monarchy and Wastefall. The town is old, kind of dirty, and sees travelers of all kinds. On this day, we look to the interior of the Loaded Buckler, a tavern near the center of Murktown. Upstairs are simple sleeping quarters that can be rented for a night. The main room of the tavern is lit by a pair of fireplaces and torches mounted throughout in brackets on the wall and support columns. Tables and bar seating remain available. A young, redheaded half-elf has just seated a strange group of travelers, five in total and that is where we start our first session. Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. Curse of Strahd Campaign Diary Episode 001: Death House This was a long time coming. It doesn’t get much more classic than Ravenloft and Barovia, two of D&D’s most beloved settings. Come along with Stephen as he takes you through the set up and first sessions of his run of Curse of Strahd. Curse of Strahd is one of the most popular modules built for 5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons and has roots going back to the beginnings of the game. Each run of the module is different, so even if you have played it before, you’ve never played it like this. Our first session begins with getting players to the table, and trying to survive the “Death House”. Will our heroes survive the swirling mists of Barovia, or are they going to be something, or someone’s dinner? Subscribe to Storytelling Breakdown wherever you get your podcasts. 501: Using a livestream countdown timer Many live videos and live video podcasts do start with a livestream countdown timer, which looks like this and runs at the top of the show.
But, are they needed, and if so, how do we create them? That's what I discuss here and in this article: http://christophtrappe.com/livestream-countdown-timer
