Sometimes the game of basketball is bigger than one superstar being traded to another team where another superstar is and we automatically name that team the champs before a game is even played. Sometimes you have to dig deeper into what’s going on and make the argument on why something makes sense or why something doesn’t. This is what this station is all about, NON BIAS MEDIA who doesn’t believe in bandwagoning something just to look good! If it makes sense the argument will be made accordingly, if not the argument will be made accordingly. ...Read More

284 Building a 10,000 Year Clock, Jeff Bezos, Long-Term Thinking, & Being A Good Ancestor with Alexander Rose, The Long Now Foundation On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, our guest Alexander Rose asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks. We go deep into that question, and a myriad of other topics in today’s dialogue.

Alexander Rose is the executive director of the Long Now Foundation. And their mission is to foster long-time, long-term thinking. And they're probably most known for the building of this massive 10,000-year clock with the support of Jeff Bezos.

If you are anyone who cares about products, if you're an engineer, a product leader, or frankly, anyone else who cares about creating products, or a different future, you're going to love this conversation.
Alexander Rose on The Long Now Foundation
The conversation starts off with Alexander describing the purpose of The Long Now Foundation and The Long Now Idea itself. It was started by a set of both technologist and artists, who are part of the earlier generation of Silicon Valley.

“It was a group of people that were realizing that by the kind of fetishization of speed that was happening, especially around Silicon Valley, in technology, circles, that we were taking a lot of things off the table. So things like climate change, if you were only given a few years to solve something like that, you basically won't even start. But if you are willing to think about something, at least in terms of centuries or generations, you could imagine how you might solve these large challenges that humanity is now facing.” – Alexander Rose

Brian Eno, one of the founders of the Long Now Foundation, coined the term, and he really stretched it out to the 10,000 years we’ve had, to the 10,000 years in the future, making it a 20,000-year story.
Humanity 10,000 Years into the Future
The focus then shifts into the story of what will happen 10,000 years into the future. For Alexander, he believes that humanity will still be there, but it depends on what we do today if they are thriving or struggling by then.

“I very much believe that humanity is going to be around for the next 10,000 years. The question is, are we making decisions that are going to help those future generations right now? As Jonas Salk originally asked: Are we being good ancestors, or are we being bad ancestors? And how can we be better ones?” – Alexander Rose

Alexander then proceeds to discuss our ongoing report card on the matter.
Alexander Rose on Thinking of the "Good Old Days"
Talking about the past, particularly the notion of the good old days, Alexander firmly thinks that we definitely have it better today than in the distant past. It is just that, we are used to modern comforts and the ever-growing technology at the palm of our hands, that we take those things for granted and focus on the bad things todays and reminisce on the good memories from the past.

Alexander describes it like a pendulum swinging back and forth. While there are swings on both directions, the momentum for the forward / positive swing is oftentimes bigger than the backwards or negative one.  Though granted in today’s climate, it’s hard to see the positives than the negatives.

While the past would be nice to visit, a person from this time would find it a horrendous place to live in, minus the comforts that they have been accustomed to.

Alright A-Rod, what do ya got?  Todd and Payne return to action with the NFC North and a funky division made up of wholesale player and coaching changes.  Are Bears fans hitting the eject button on 2022 or are they excited to see what Justin Fields does with limited weaponry.  Speaking of weapons, Kevin O'Connell is now calling the shots in Minnesota and the expectation is an improved offense.  O'Connell and his OC Wes Phillips have made their way from the defending Super Bowl champs to a Vikings team and city thirsty for a winner.  Winning during the regular season has never been a problem for Aaron Rodgers, but his issues don't show until we get into postseason play.  Will that be a problem again without key weapons?  Playoffs could be a long shot, but Dan Campbell has the cats on the come.  Where do the Lions sit amongst the division threats?  Deep dives on all four NFC North teams with Key metrics, Coaching changes, Schedule analysis, Scheme changes, Power ratings, Regression candidates, and Analytics to help you navigate the Win Totals and Futures market.  As always, the boys provide a best bet to conclude their NFC North football preview!

Worship with Mel - To Envy? Or not to Envy Worship with Mel - To Envy? Or not to Envy
Blessed are the Pure in Heart Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. … This is what the wicked are like—always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.  If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. … Those who are far from you will perish… But as for me, it is good to be near God. (Psalm 73:1, 12-17, 27a. 28a)   That’s a long and complicated selection of text that I picked for today.  Jesus said it a lot more simply in his Beatitudes from Matthew 5 when he said: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” But it is hard to keep a pure heart, and that’s what this psalm is all about.  The psalmist confesses early on in verse 2 that their foot had nearly slipped—they had nearly given up their pure heart as they envied the wicked. Why this envy?  Because the wicked are carefree, rich, and healthy.  They don’t follow any rules: they do what they want and they get what they want—they chase their desires and fulfill them with all the money, entertainment, property, sex, and power that they can get their hands on.  And it works.  Despite the fact that we people of faith believe that doing things God’s way is what gets the blessing: it never quite seems to turn out that way.  Whereas those who take the short cut, elbowing their way through any way they can get away with, seem pretty successful and blessed! So why should the pure in heart bother to keep their hands clean?  Why should they follow the rules?  Why do they keep suffering affliction when they too, could easily just jump the que to grab the blessings they desire for themselves?  Well, it frankly doesn’t make any sense at all.  Or at least, it didn’t until the psalmist stepped inside God’s sanctuary.  Then he remembered.  And that’s true for us all: entering into God’s presence invites us to remember. The psalmist may not have had all the blessings his heart desired.  He may not have even had much health in his body.  But what the psalmist did have that the wicked didn’t, was God.  Despite all the wealth and health in the world, the wicked remained far from God.  And ultimately, God is what makes the difference.  God and being near to him is what holds the ultimate value.  This is where the Psalmist ends.  “Those who are far from you will perish,” for who has any life that’s really life without God?  But God’s people who have had their hearts and hands made pure through the work of Jesus?  They are the ones who find life, and blessing, and eventually also that promise of shalom that we heard about yesterday, because they are the ones who have God.  The ones that God has come near to.  This is true life, life as it was meant to be—life with God.  So says Jesus: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
Testing our Motives "Why have you rejected us forever, O God? Why does your anger smolder against the sheep of your pasture? Remember the people you purchased of old...Turn your steps toward these everlasting ruins, all this destruction the enemy has brought on the sanctuary (Psalm 74:1-3). Reading Psalm 74 reminds me of those news briefs coming periodically out of the Middle East a few years ago. Those reports depict a group, such as ISIS, appearing to systematically eradicate the Christian memory from their territory. The fear among Christians in the West was that all evidence of Christian existence and worship of God was being scoured away. We know from scripture, especially the book of Deuteronomy, that when Israel found herself in this kind of national crisis, there was only one cause. She herself was to blame. God stated very clearly that if Israel abandoned Him, He would let her enemies destroy her. These things happened to Israel because of God's judgement. St. Augustine, back in the 4th century summed it all up with these pithy words, "If we reject God's mercy we are only left with His wrath." But that is not the only story. From Scripture, we know that there are other reasons why tragedy strikes God's people. We must not be so arrogant as to imagine we understand the reasons behind adversity. Job never finds out why he experienced his calamity. When Jesus’ disciples want to know whose sin caused a man’s blindness, Jesus topples their theology, saying this was to display God’s work (John 9:3). Many of God's people have found themselves praying from the place of chaos with no knowledge of why! How do we pray in this void? How do we give voice to God's seeming absence? Psalm 74 helps. It is always good to start with confession and repentance. These should always be in our spiritual arsenal. But this psalm has none of them. It gives absolutely no rational why Israel has been pillaged and burned. Israel's worship leaders do not ask God to see how real or sincere their repentance is. Nor do they ask God to notice how holy their lives are now. No! There is nothing selfish about there requests for God to act. They appeal to God's cause and the defaming of His name (22). These words give expression to our groaning when God seems absent. Why is God not doing anything? The distress caused by God's inactivity is heightened as the worshipper’s recount some of the great acts of God. He has always been the God of action and power for his people. He came to them as their Redeemer, rescuing them from Egypt. So why is He so silent now? We pray to the creating and saving God who has overcome every challenge to His kingship. Christ sits enthroned in heaven, having conquered death. Why does He tolerate the 'monsters' that are destroying his worshippers today? This is a prayer of desperate faith. The issue for the worshippers is not that their lives are in ruins, but that God's fame and honour and name are in ruins. The redemptive project God began by liberating Israel from Egypt is in jeopardy. If doesn’t act soon, his followers will be wiped from the earth. This certainly challenges how we pray. Such psalms invite us to consider what motivates our prayers. Often, our motives are selfish. The church has long encouraged us to use the psalms to shape the content of our prayers. On our own, we turn inward, self focused. With the scriptures as our guide, we can truly learn to pray, “Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.”
