How To Use Shooting Sticks EP 98 In todays episode we are going to go over the importance of shooting sticks.
A huge mistake we western hunters make is not practicing or knowing how to shoot off shooting sticks effectively and accurately. In Africa on 99.9% of hunts you will more then likely be taking most of your shots off shooting sticks, built in the three legged tripod setup. Learning how to use shooting sticks, and getting comfortable with your hunting rifle off sticks will substantially put you in a better place for success when you get in the African bush.
Get Some stick and hit the range with them regularly.

I have owned and practiced on a set of shooting sticks from African Sporting Creations since 2009.
They are great and easy to use, you could even take them to Africa with you, if youd prefer.

Row by Row Episode 244: Gardening In April April showers bring May flowers! April tends to be such a great time to grow flowers AND vegetables. Join us as we discuss what you should be planting! We are reviewing what you should be doing in the garden this April as warm weather and rain starts to settle in USDA zones 5-10. Let’s Grow Together!
In cold-winter regions, spring weather may be weeks away. In warm-winter regions, the last frost may already have passed. April is named for Aprilis, the Latin word meaning to open. This month you will see returning birds and soon their young. The first butterflies and bees should be about before the month is over. Only very far to the north will ice and snow still have their grip on the garden by month’s end.
What is Arbor Day?
April is the traditional month in many countries for the celebration of tree planting. In the United States, many states celebrate Arbor Day in April. Planting trees has long been associated with various religious ceremonies and also as an activity to commemorate the birth of a child. When you sow out your first vegetable seeds this month, see if there is room for a new tree in your yard, neighborhood, or nearby park.

What should you do in your garden this month?
April is a good month to harden off your plants. Now you need to get the plants ready to transplant outside without any issues. “Hardening off” means you are slowly taking the seedlings outside a few hours each day to get them used to sunlight, the dry air, and cold nights. And don’t forget to prepare your soil before you set out any transplants! You should be amending your soil and incorporating pre-plant fertilizer. This month, harvest onions and garlic. Take care and time to prune your garden plants that have succumbed to winter damage before the new shoots of spring emerge.

What should you plant this month?
Here’s what you can plant in your garden based on your USDA growing zone.
Zone 9 and 10
April is like summer in zone 9 and 10. So, you will want to plant warm-weather plants. Here’s what to plant:

Bush Beans
Pole Beans
Cantaloupes
Corn
Cucumbers
Varieties of peas
Peppers
Pumpkins
Summer squash
Tomato transplants
Sweet potatoes
Watermelons

Zone 7 and 8
It is quite warm in zone 7 and 8 during April. Here are the things you may want to start planting:

Bush Beans
Poles Beans
Cantaloupe
Corn
Cucumbers
Eggplant
Peas
Peppers
Okra
All warm-season herbs
Squash
Sweet potatoes
Tomatoes

Zone 5 and 6
April is the perfect time to start planting stuff in zone 5 and 6. Here’s what you can start planting:

Cabbage
Carrots
Lettuce
Peas
Spinach
Strawberries

Zone 3 and 4
If you live in zone 3 or 4, it is best to wait until after April 15th to plant many of these in your garden. Here is what you can start indoors and move outdoors when there is no longer any frost:

Asparagus
Beets

The Four Corners Approach to Unlocking Peak Performance I have been trying to think of a way to best illustrate the relationship between all of the various topics we discuss here at The Everyday Marksman. As part of an introduction in the book I've been [trying to] work on since the start of the year, I needed a way to illustrate why I advocate the "basics is best" approach so much. I think I've got it, and today I want to talk about it- and maybe get your thoughts as well.

First, I want to establish the why. Every once and a while I come back to the idea that far too many people spend far too much money on more gear and equipment than they should. In the grand scheme of things, your equipment is but one component of a large picture. However, it's the easiest component to build on since it only requires spending more money. On top of that, it's the only thing that gun and gear companies have to offer, so they market the hell out of it. It's their job to convince you that what you already have isn't good enough, and you need the next thing.

Unlike ammunition, which is expendable supply, guns and gear are generally durable goods that last a long time. To stay in business, manufacturers require an ever-expanding customer base, or must find a way to convince you to keep coming back time and time again. While they may care about you, they also care about staying in business.
It's not Just Gear
This idea doesn't just apply to manufacturers, either. Many trainers try to convince you that they have special knowledge or insight that you haven't seen before, and so you must pay them to teach you the special thing and bust through your plateau.

Don't take this to mean that I don't think there isn't value in an experienced coach to brush up your skills from time to time. If it's the first time you're learning a particular skill, whether it's shooting, tactics, lifting, or something else, then I absolutely believe there's good reason to seek instruction.

Where I see the problem is people who keep taking courses to learn new variations of the same things over and over again rather than practicing what they've learned already to the point of mastery.

The problem is, again, that there isn't much money to be made in telling you to do the hard thing and keep practicing. People want to be provided the easy path to performance, and they're willing to pay a lot of money for it. Unfortunately, there isn't one.
The Pyramid of Performance
That gets me to the illustration I want to talk about. I needed a way to show that success in marksman-related pursuits requires focus in more than one area at a time. Over-optimizing on one thing comes at the cost of the others, which results in lower performance.

I was reading through Alexander Bromley's Base Strength: Program Design Blueprints, and he had a three-sided pyramid illustration showing the relationship between muscle mass, strength, endurance, and coordination to make his point. The more I thought about it, the more I was convinced that it was applicable to you and I in many contexts if I made a couple of tweaks to it.

Imagine a four-sided pyramid. The peak of the pyramid represents the maximum possible performance you should expect for whatever it is you're trying to do. Being a geometric object, the maximum height of the pyramid depends upon the size of the pyramid's base.

The base has four corners, each representing an important attribute of performance: Technique, Mindset, Physical Capability, and Equipment.

* Technique describes your skill level with the task at hand. It could be marksmanship fundamentals, building a fire, pressing a weight overhead, small unit tactics, or many other things
* Mindset represents focus,

Talking Luft! with Ian Boswell Rapha presents Talking Luft!

I recently took you on a journey through the absolute torture that was taking part in the beast that is Cape Epic. In case you missed it, it’s an hors categorie mountain biking event, across the challenging terrain of South Africa’s western cape, and it really pushed me to my limit.

I thought while I was there, I might as well get out the microphone and turn it on my friend and Cape Epic partner Ian Boswell, and give him the Talking Luft! treatment.

We had a nice little chat, spanning Bos’ early interactions with Lance Armstrong, his thoughts on achieving luft, hypothetical musings on whether it’s better to ride with or sans helmet, and whether he finds it important to keep shaving the legs post-retirement.
We did a bit of a deep dive on kit selection; how to select your kit post-pro career, which of the former pro kits and bikes are worth keeping, and if you had become world champion during your career, how would you wear your rainbow kit?

We took a look into Bos’ current Strava status (hint- it’s solid), favourite riders from the cycling history books, what his dream loop is, and his favourite pro race – which threw up a few surprises, and of course we delved into some of the trials and tribulations that we overcame at Cape Epic.

We had a bit of fun chatting in this episode, and I hope you enjoy listening along!

Cheers,

Mitch

Family, Friends and the Outdoors with Wiley Dees On this episode of the Southern Game and Tackle Podcast, Rick is joined by lifelong friend, Wiley Dees. Wiley grew up in the same small Bama town as Rick, and the two cut their teeth together in the woods, really jumping into serious bowhunting at the same time. Wiley's outdoor experience is generational, and has taken him to different parts of the world and into several different areas of the outdoor industry. This is a great campfire conversation, with the Rick and Wiley catching up after quite a while of life having them headed in different directions. They share old stories and cover new plans they have in the coming hunting seasons. As the boys chat, Wiley talks about how he was introduced to the outdoors and how the early days led to guiding hunts, running a local archery shop, shooting 3D tournaments and now introducing his young kids to the same passion that's been engrained in his family's history. It's been a journey for both Rick and Wiley, with injuries playing a big role in their stories. As Wiley bounces back from his own injury, he's also stepped into a new challenge; the world of traditional archery. He talks about the perspective of losing something he loved, then falling back into it and creating opportunities to learn even more about archery and hunting in general. As southern spring turkey seasons are coming into the latter stages, Wiley also shares an awesome story of a recent family hunt, that reinforces the power and excitement that can only be found in the outdoors. As Rick and Wiley catch up, they cover a lot of topics, but the re-occurring theme in this episode, as has been the case in many, is how relationships are forged thanks to God's great outdoors. As always, thank you for tuning in! Interesting call from Jacob Bynum of Rifles Only.  He pinged to discussion his recent Nomad or Outlaw Match, meaning he had no affiliation to any league and he was Surprised to see and hear from the Sponsors.
The Sponsors for Rifles Only Spring match stepped up bigger being the match was not affiliated to any league or series.  I have noticed the sponsors buying ads with me discussion the lack of return.  The series have a big voice but very little actual reach.  The message carries but he return for sponsors just isn't there.  Sure they will use the name and resources but really, the investment is lost.
Jacob also had a user question, this was about only have one rifle.  Both Jacob and agreed an 308 Gas Gun would be best if you could only have one.

Lastly, where are we going, it's a great conversation with Jacob and I think if you pay attention you map out a path going forward.  I alway look forward to talking to Jacob and this episode was simulcast to Sniper's Hide for the Everyday Sniper and the Rifles Only Podcast.

Ep 120 – **EXCLUSIVE** Road to the Horse Interview with JR Robles; Part II EXCLUSIVE As JR Robles entered Round 3 of Road to the Horse, the first time competitor wasn't showing any nerves. In fact, cool as a cucumber (on the outside), JR was sitting undefeated in any round he had competed in in the horse starting competition after winning every round and the Wild Card Competition months previously in Fort Worth, Texas, as well as the two rounds leading up to the finale at the Road to the Horse. That was all about to change in the craziest way possible. Listen to the exclusive podcast interview with JR on what happened next in Kentucky and how that moment has changed his life in more ways than one!  In an amazing opportunity for the That Western Life podcast, we got the chance to sit down with our friend Jona "JR" Robles, a horse trainer out of Oregon, for a full-encompassed podcast interview about his unprecedented time competing in Kentucky at the Road to the Horse. After maintaining a strong lead, JR made the easy decision to place the horse first, stepping out of the competition and giving up $75,000 and one of the most elite titles in the world of horse trainers and clinicians.  Find JR Robles on Facebook and Instagram.  Follow the That Western Life podcast for more behind the scenes access to your favorite western industry professionals and influencers on Facebook and Instagram.

EP 23 Cries of the Savanna Sue Tidwell Sue Tidwell lived in awe of Africa’s extraordinary wildlife. After years spent appreciating the animals in her imagination, the tenderhearted American hated the idea of joining her husband on a big game hunt. And getting attacked by blood-sucking tsetse flies the moment she stepped off the plane gave no hint of the mind-blowing change of perspective in her future…
This podcast was filled with emotion and passion and truly one that will resonate in the hunting world.

S10 Episode 5: Get Racism Out Of The Beautiful Game This edition of Quakes After 90 tackles the very serious topic of racism within the sport. During last week's match against the New York Red Bulls, DP Dante Vanzeir admittedly used a racial slur during the match, surrounded by black players on both the San Jose Earthquakes and New York Red Bulls. The MLS decision to suspend Vanzeir for only 6 games is not only insufficient but sends a bad message to fans and players of color that the league does not support them. This message unfortunately goes against the many marketing campaigns by the MLS "in support" of stamping out racism from the game. We here at Quakes After 90 have decided to share our personal views on the subject in this episode. Please note that this episode has been marked as explicit due to the language used. You can reach out to us on Twitter @QuakesAfter90. Thank you.
Florida Constitutional Carry & Liberals Terrorize Riley Gaines | SOTG 1184 Florida has finally joined the Constitutional Carry Club, well kind of, almost.  We’ll consider just what this means to the people of the Sunshine State during our SOTG Homeroom segment from CrossBreed Holsters.  What is a Battle Rifle? EP 112 – Rifle Hunting Deep Dive with Pap Van Winkle Pap has been one of my most requested guests and we finally got the chance to sit down and chat. First, we dove into Pap’s background growing up as a guide in AZ and then moved on to a Q&A. I apologize in advance if we did not get to your question, we crushed a two-hour podcast and just ran out of time. Pap has promised to come back on though and catch us up on his hunting adventures and answer another round of questions in the near future.

Battery Banks For Backpacking Review
I picked up 5 battery banks that are marketed at people who spend time in the backcountry and tried my best to figure out which one was best across a number of different categories.
5 banks tested are the Goal Zero Venture 75, Anker 525, Anker 325, Nitecore Carbo 2000, and Biolite 80 PD
My apologies for constantly referring to the Nitecore as Nightforce.

How Turkey Hunting Can Make You a Better Deer Hunter Deer hunting or turkey hunting, what's your favorite? For many of us, deer hunting is our first love. There's nothing like a crisp November morning in the stand, blind, or saddle to get the blood flowing. But for the hunter looking to broaden his horizons, there are tons of opportunities out there. While there are a wide variety of species to chase come fall and winter, there aren't very many seasons open as the temps warm up and the days grow longer. Enter spring turkey hunting. An absolute blast in its own right, turkey hunting is certainly a different ballgame than hunting whitetails. But what if I told you the spring turkey hunting can also make you a better deer hunter? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh and Pierce discuss ways that hunting spring gobblers can help you be a better deer hunter next fall. The guys discuss gear, terrain features, strategy, and talk a little about their upcoming hunt for turkey in WI. SJR | Week 553: Rainy River 500 On this week’s show, we’re back at River Bend Resort for the 2nd Annual SJR Rainy River 500 fishing tournament. We recap the tournament, tell you some of our favorite stories from the week including dodging icebergs while fighting personal best sturgeon. Tournament winners are also announced, and we have the latest Rainy River conditions. A couple winners also have some cool tagged sturgeon tagging stories.

Be sure to follow/subscribe to this podcast, leave a rating/review if you like what you’re hearing and share this show with your friends so they can enjoy Sporting Journal Radio as well.

Bret Amundson, Dan Amundson and David Eckhardt swap stories on some of the fish they caught this week and talk about what the river was like. Greg Jones and Joe Henry also talk about the fish they caught including two 60 inch sturgeon on walleye gear. They also talk about the donation of some entry fee money to Keep it Clean.

Then we’ll meet the winners of the Rainy River 500 tournament. Jonathan Narverud joins first to talk about the sucker he caught which won the other fish category. Supposedly it was pushing state records…

Chris Novak and Eric Solo join to talk about tying for 2nd place in the sturgeon category. They talk about what they were doing to catch big sturgeon. Nathan Vleck is the sturgeon champ and he wraps up the segment talking about his winning fish and a tagged sturgeon he caught recently.

Finally we meet the walleye category winners. Ryan Rondeau talks about the two big walleyes he entered and the even bigger walleye he caught before tournament hours started. Sabra LeBrasseur tells us about her 2nd place walleye she caught with Joe and Greg, and unfortunately our walleye winner had to take off early.

It was an even better turnout this year, and bigger fish got entered. We’re already planning for next year’s derby. April 9th and 10th. Make plans to join us. It was a blast!!

SJR | Week 551: The Future of Non-Resident Hunting Licenses & Early Season Turkey Tips On this week’s show, Bret Amundson, Dan Amundson and David Eckhardt are joined by Sam Soholt to talk early season turkey hunting tips and tactics, hunting land access and what the future might look like as far as non-resident licenses, lotteries and more. Sam also tells us about his latest trip to New Zealand. Joe Henry also joins the show to tell us what conditions are like on the Rainy River, and he talks about new Keep it Clean legislation.

Be sure to follow/subscribe to this podcast, leave a rating/review if you like what you’re hearing and share this show with your friends so they can enjoy Sporting Journal Radio as well.

Sam Soholt is our first guest, and he talks about what the beginning of turkey season will look like with all of the snow on the ground and the cold weather. He has some tips for hunters who have tags and plans to hunt the first few weeks of the season, regardless of what state they’re in.

He also talks about what the future of non-resident hunting licenses might look like. We’ve seen some states put caps, quotas and other restrictions to non-resident hunting licenses more in recent years. The gang discusses possible reasons to why these changes are made and if it will lead to a better or worse future for our hunting. Land access is also discussed, and why having good quality land access is so critical.

Joe Henry caps off the show and talks about how the Rainy River is opening up and fishing has been good, but people are still ice fishing on Lake of the Woods. He also talks about some new legislation regarding Keep It Clean, and why people should come up for the SJR 500 fishing tournament.

Rylan Parrott is dialed in on big fish, whether it’s lake trout at Tazin Lake or Pike in other parts of Canada. He caught an insane amount of Northern Pike over 40″ this winter. He did it wearing some crazy outfits while sitting on a couch he found in the city and had a sunken car in his background. Sounds made up right? He has video of the whole thing.

Rylan also talks about his first season at Tazin Lake Lodge. He tells the story of the biggest lake trout he boated, how he got a nose bleed when he caught his first giant laker, and how he can’t wait to get back there this year.

Joe Henry gets us excited for next week’s Rainy River fishing tournament by telling us how fishing has been and what people are using. Sounds like sturgeon fishing is really good right now, and the walleyes are just starting to heat up.
