so that you can check out all of her amazing ideas. But now I want to share with you some of the things you should avoid on Cinco de Mayo to make sure that you are not being disrespectful and that you are not culturally appropriating first. Please please please stay away from anything that is associated with stereotypes. Every year on cinco demayo people are breaking out their sombreros and they're fake moustache is and that is really, really disrespectful. There is a publication called the Guadalajara Reporter and they wrote some might argue that the classic image of someone wearing a sombrero while taking a nap has all too often been used to characterize mexicans as lazy, a stigmatization that anyone who has lived in this country for a length of time will know is far from the truth today. Only mariachis in urban areas where sombreros in public. So unless you are a mariachi in an urban area in Mexico, please resist the urge to put on a sombrero. It's just a telltale sign that you really don't know much about the culture and you're not interested in respecting it for what it really is. And please also leave out your fake moustache is and your ponchos because all of that is a costume that perpetuates stereotypes and culture is not a costume. It's not okay on Cinco de Mayo, but it's not okay at any point in the year, don't dress up like another person's culture. Another thing that you should avoid on Cinco de Mayo is making up language or speaking in a fake accent. All of these things are just mocking their culture. I've seen so many people post things like cinco de drink O or L. Brancheau Okay adding O to the end of the word is not spanish and it's just not even funny, celebrate respectfully or don't celebrate at all. The last thing that I would caution you against on Cinco de Mayo is celebrating without any ties to the history. As I mentioned, the true history of Cinco de Mayo is so misunderstood. So if we're celebrating without connecting to the real history, then we're just perpetuating that misunderstanding and adding to it help your little kiddos understand why is Cinco de Mayo is so important to the people in the city of puebla. And how can we celebrate in a way that really honors them and the battle that they thought. If you notice somebody that you know or that you love celebrating Cinco de Mayo in a disrespectful way, please tell them, reach out to them and tell them what they could be doing differently to celebrate because it's our responsibility to hold one another account.
