Welcome to the Eight episode of the Building a Bulletproof Back podcast. This podcast aims to empower listeners with HOPE that healing is possible when you know how. We discuss strategic tools addressing mental, physical and emotional Health. I am your host, Marion McRae, a physiotherapist & movement addict on a mission to see the existing model of treating back pain evolve. The current model is broken. It focusses almost entirely on the physical body, neglecting the fact that we are all both thinkers and feelers. When the thoughts in our head, and the the emotions in our bodies are less than optimal, we fail to thrive. Our Guest for this episode is a humble, athletic, super intelligent Family Man - Andrew Mann. Andrew went for a mountain bike ride with mates and ended up in hospital for weeks after "head butting" a tree at full pace. His insights into traumatically acquired spinal injuries, the affects on family, and the path to recovery are well articulated. We discuss -Andrew’s tools:Physical - Slow your Breathing to stay calm, walking, pool, gym, modify desk set upMental - Set yourself Challenges, ask lots of questions to empower yourself and tell yourself "YOU WILL GET BETTER", set yourself a new normalEmotional - Respect the signals from your body, learn about Good Pain vs Bad PainAndrew’s Top  3 tips - 1. Mental Attitude - Tell yourself " It will get better" , set yourself small challenges, work with educated team members (physios, osteos, exercise physiologists, etc), eat healthy, cut alcohol. 2. Understand the Dysfunction in your Spine - ask questions3. DON'T STOP moving (even from bed if you have to) - Walking 4. getting back to this, I love what you said about the bulletproof back, it's a completely new concept, isn't it, from what I've heard others share, and I love that everyone has a different perspective on it. If we think about or if you could pass on your top three tips for someone sort of stuck in persistent pain right now, been knowing what, you know, having been through, what you've been through, Could you put it in three things I have tired and three, there are three main points, I could say one is mental health, mental attitude, I know that sounds hard and very easy just to say, you know, just just have a good mental outlook and it will get better, tell yourself it will get better, it will get better, but there's a whole lot of things that you can put under that and that is the things you can do to help you mental health and that is that yourself from real challenges and break it down. And there's so many people that understand backs really well, physio physios and osteo and rehab specialists get in touch with them because they will help you with the mental side as well, because once you and guided with someone that is passionate about fixing you up, you will gain the mental um side of that as well, and that will lift your confidence, that things will get better. I don't think you need to put up with pain, I understand that some people have pain travel with it, but I'm still a firm believer that if you have a developmental attitude and nurture your body and mental health a long way to I think getting heading in the right direction and treating the pain, seeing the pain like you said.
