Today we are sharing with you another bonus episode of farm hacks for all our dedicated listeners. The A Better Way to Farm family has always aimed to find more and better ways to support our co-farmers and owners through all farm seasons, and not only in farm productions and improvements but also in concrete and viable life tips and insights.   So we encourage you to go ahead and share us with a friend and fellow farmers. Rate us in ITunes or other platforms you’re in, so we could better spread the good stuff around. We are so appreciative for you all tuning in.   Now, there have been some talks about Sulfur lately so for those of you who have just deliberated on it recently, welcome to the party! Let us exchange a few of our thoughts on this topic, so be ready to listen and we hope to impart a thing or two on this subject. Let’s go right in … 😉 😉 😉     Episode 70 Transcripts:   [00:00:16] Rod: Morning guys, Rod here at A Better Way to Farm. I hope this day finds you doing well. I hope it finds your harvest good. And I hope it finds you being safe, most of all. So, wanted to talk a little bit about sulfur here today. You guys know, I subscribed a lot of emails. I read a lot of magazines, trying to keep up with what's being talked about right now.   [00:00:35] One of the big things that's being discussed a lot is sulfur. And all I can say to that is welcome to the party. You're a few years late, but welcome to the party. Guys, even five years ago, we were having a lot of the universities and stuff we're talking about. No, you don't need any sulfur, everything is fine. You do it all with NPK. Well, a couple of the land grants universities that came out just in the last couple of weeks with studies showing sulfur. Now, they were specifically pushing certain products and showing the results. And do I doubt that those were true? No, I absolutely believe they probably are true.   [00:01:12] I believe that the guys got the responses, the university code. I do not question that. So my deal on sulfur yes or no is this. Number one? You guys know, I believe doing a soil test. We have got to pull the soil tests. We have to see the analytical work to determine what that is. Now in parts per million, we're looking for a bare minimum of 25 parts per million sulfur. We'd like to see it higher. If we're not at 25, we know we're going to have to put some on. Strange thing, I sell very little sulfur. We have a little bit in some of our starter fertilizer that you can use, but fundamentally you're going to have to source your sulfur somewhere else.   [00:01:47] However, I am going to make some recommendations as to what that looks like. First of all, let me say this. We've seen a lot of work done with elemental sulfur, the old yellow stuff. Yes, that makes you feel better because you put it out there and yes, you can see it all over the ground. What we've not been able to do is translate that into yield nor into tissue tests, showing improved sulfur levels.   [00:02:11] We're not a big fan of that because we don't believe that it is right for you. And you guys know that we know everything that happens in farming is good for someone. The question is who? Our job is to make sure what's going on is good for you. And so we don't push the elemental sulfur. We see an awful lot of people getting an awful lot of response, either dry ammonium sulfate, or two ammonium thiosulfate, the liquid be co applied with your other dry granular, can be co applied with your 28 or your 32, or can be used by itself.   [00:02:46] Don't go below 26, can be applied as the carrier for your pre-emerge chemicals and that makes a great way to get your sulfur down. But I just want to encourage you guys. Sulfur is important because one of the things is, is that in nature, there's this ratio carbon nitrogen to sulfur. It appears as a hundred parts carbon, ten parts, nitrogen, one part sulfur.   [00:03:08] So we have to have one part sulfur for every 10 parts nitrogen that we have. And if we don't, then we're not getting good utilization out of that nitrogen. Sulfur is very important. It does so many things for the plant. It seems to help with. In our area, we see a lot of people who have adequate sulfur don't get hammered as quickly when it gets hot and dry.   [00:03:27] And so I would encourage you to just think about all the benefits of that. Do some reading, do some research. Now, when you're looking at these land grant universities that are pushing these studies and they're pushing specific products, guys, I do not question that the products work. I do question if they work better than just using 12-00-26 ammonium thiosulfate or using ammonium sulfate with dry broadcast and what is the money difference?   [00:03:54] So I'm going to encourage you guys, do some studying on your own.
