This butterfly is excited to be speaking with scientist Pedro H.S. Brancalion.
Pedro Brancalion is a Professor of Tropical Forestry at the University of São Paulo, Brazil and vice-coordinator of the Atlantic Forest Restoration Pact. His research focuses on the development of innovative forest restoration approaches in human-modified tropical landscapes, aimed at transforming restoration into an economically viable land use with greater potential to contribute to biodiversity conservation and human wellbeing. He has a background as an agronomist and has worked in close collaboration with farmers, agricultural companies, and
conservation NGOs to develop large-scale restoration programs, as well as with policy makers in Brazil to develop novel legal instruments and strategic plans for restoration. Most of his research has been focused in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Amazon regions. He worked as lead author and review editor in The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), as member of the scientific board of Brazil’s National Plan for Native Vegetation Recovery and of the Regenera Brasil initiative. He published more than 170 peer-reviewed papers and 7 books, and received the 2018 Bunge Award for his contribution to promoting ecosystem services in agriculture.
You will hear about his latest research Global priority areas for ecosystem restoration where we dive in to talk about biodiversity, soil carbon, the meaning of “Brazil” and more.
