a therapist, they need help. And I'm, you know, me and my little team, we're not licensed therapist. So let's just back away. And then that's when I realized this is more people going into homes like this. You're biting off more than you can choose sometimes. So that's why I stepped back and realized, you know what I really like the lore and legend in history behind why something is haunted and looking into that. And so that's why I became more obsessed with that. And I stepped away from doing actual, like going into people's homes, which I don't, you ever, unless it's like a friend suddenly comes up and like, well, yeah, hell I got everything swirling around in my, it's crazy poultry. I'll be there. Like, I'll bring booze. What's cool? I think that's, you know, one of the, one of my issues I have with, you know, the abundance of paranormal teams that are out there is, I think some of these teams don't really take that idea as serious as I think they should. I mean going into someone's house that you don't really know. Um that's, that's kind of, and that's something I think is really, really serious. Uh, that's not a joke. So I ended up writing three books. Well only one ghost book, Ghosts and legends of Michigan's West Coast and I had a publisher, which is a super cool publisher, history press. They do all kinds of local history and they're like, hey, we're looking for someone who can write about like cool stuff in michigan, do you know anyone? And I'm like, yeah, I'm sitting here on an english green, like I'm not teaching english, which everyone around me was going to become a teacher and I was the only one that wasn't, so they're like, what are you going to do? And I'm like, I don't know, just like books or something. And so like, no, this is cool. Like this isn't the opportunity. So anyway, I wrote that book. But then when I was doing all this newspaper research and looking into stories and stuff, I would find these articles like argument over cows ends in death. Like a cool, I got to keep this one. So my, my pile of those kind of stories just grew. And then after a while I realized I had a whole like two other books of weird, obtuse forgotten true crime, which is nothing I ever thought of writing. So, but it's lost local history. And like when my original thought there was that paranormal investigators did a lot to unearth uh, this forgotten history about their community because they're in looking for why something is haunted. So, um, I'm from originally the west side of the state, from a little town called Grand Haven. And so I have a book called Wicked Ottawa County and another one called Wicked Grand rapids and Grand rapids. The is the second biggest uh, city in michigan next to Detroit. So there was plenty of stories about that. So that's how my books were born and what are some of the most impressive local legends and stuff that has come out of your research or just the folk tales that you guys got growing up? What are some of the ones that you've liked the best? One of my favorites is the michigan dog man and he's kind of like, he's over in Wisconsin too, so it's sort of like, he's like a midwest cryptid and this is something that got started really up in northern michigan around traverse city. It's been there with native american stories like shapeshifter stories. Uh, I don't know if with the native american stuff, if it was always something negative, but now it's grown into something like creepy and sinister and if people have seen this thing lurking on the side of the road and it stands up on its haunches and starts walking towards them and it's huge and it's more like a werewolf now. But there was DJ back in 1987 steve Cook and he put together this really, if you want to waste a few minutes of your life, just go to Youtube type in the dog man, steve Cook and you're going to get this awesome Casio like keyboard ballad of dog man, it's great. And he put this out there as an april fool's joke, thinking that I was just gonna like, you know, fool with the people of Traverse city, make them think that there's a dog man out there. Well then the joke was on him because everyone started calling the radio show saying no, no, no, no, no, we've seen this thing, this thing is real like we know you're joking but we're not. So he was like, wait, what the hell, what's going on? Just kind of like, I don't know, it just went out of control after that. It just became, you know, its own thing and supposedly it appears I'm like
