I lived on the Cape the summer between my sophomore and junior year of college Summer I turned 20 and I lived in a house with a bunch of other college friends and uh it was on the Cape looking overlooking the water. It was beautiful. It was a professor's house that one of my friends um was able to rent because the professor was on sabbatical and we did indeed start our own cleaning service called charlotte's Web because there were a lot of us there, plus dad would come up and visit on weekends and whoever was available would go off to do the cleaning. So we had a lot of different jobs. A lot of our jobs were opening up houses for the summer. Big houses that people had there were their summer homes and we would have to go and clean them. But we had a regular job with a real estate company. And on saturday morning we would go over to the real estate office and the broker would say, you know, here's the addresses for today. These are the houses you're going to go to and they were just cleaning in between weekly rentals and we were supposed to just go in and do it once over. It was only supposed to take like an hour or less for each one because the people were supposed to leave the place clean. So you know, that was a regular part of our schedule. But who I went with each week would vary. Sometimes I might have to go by myself, or sometimes I would go with dad or with my good friend Francis. So this particular week when we when we uh went to the real estate office, we were told to go to this address and it was Francis and I who went and when we got there it was a older home and it had pine trees growing in front of it that completely covered the front of the house. You couldn't really even see the house and we went in the main door and you went into um like a sun room and then there was a kitchen adjacent to it and it was pretty clear that those two rooms were additions to the main house and that the main house was the older portion of the house. So once we got into those rooms, I was absolutely fine. But when I got to the doorway that separated the kitchen from the main living area of the house, I couldn't make myself walk through the door into that part of the house, you said, you know, in the story, I was filled with dread and that's true. It felt like a weight on me. I felt this, feeling like I had never felt before and from the age of five up, I lived in a 150 year old farmhouse that my parents renovated. Okay. Uh, so I was not and I had cleaned in many, many houses. I had spent time in many old houses. I had never experienced anything like this. I physically could not make myself go into the rest of the house. And you know, Francis did not feel anything like what I was feeling. And she said, well, don't worry about it. Like you do these two rooms, I'll do the rest of the house. No worries. So that's what we did. And when I got back to the house that I was living in for the summer later that evening, I called my mom and I talked to her about it and she said, well, just make sure that the next time you have to go there, you don't go by yourself. So for each of the next three weeks I had somebody else lined up to go with me on the saturday morning cleaning because as the summer progressed, um different people have different jobs. So they were pulled in different directions. So three weeks went by and every saturday morning we went to the realtor and He never gave us that house again until the 4th week when I had nobody to go with me and I went to the realtor's office and guess what? I had to go back to the house by myself. What happened? Well, I got there and had exactly the same experience. I had the first time, the same exact place in the house and exactly, and you know me, I'm I'm a very honest person, I'm a very by the book kind of person. And I really had to grapple with myself to say you know, could I leave here and go back to the real estate office and say I cleaned the house, it's fine when I hadn't but I couldn't I couldn't force myself to go through the doorway and as I look through, I can remember it really clearly. As I looked through the doorway into the living room there was a stairs that went up to the left and at the top of the stairs it was gated but it was like an a little open landing and that was the area that whatever this was was coming from. It really wasn't the rest of the house downstairs, it was that upstairs area. And I would I can still remember looking up at it and saying to myself, no way I am not going, I am not going across this threshold into the rest of the house And I didn't. I left. I went back to the real estate office and I said, all set and that was it. I never had to go back there again.
