talking about some real world examples of brainwashing besides out of the you know, coming out of the korean and the korean war. Um But one of the one I want to talk about really quick and I won't spend too much time on this because I think that it's been people pretty like a lot of press around this but it is the story of patty hearst. Um on february 4th 1974 19 year old patty Hearst. Can I say one thing? Sure. Um you know what a good drag queen name would be, patty thirst. That's a good name. Someone. Okay someone, I'm writing this down, someone do that. Okay go ahead. I'm sorry. It's a little bit of an old reference I mean but I think it works though right? It does anyway. On february 4th 1974 19 year old patty hearst was kidnapped from our Berkeley apartment by the urban guerilla left wing group called the Symbionese Liberation Army. I'm very proud of myself pronouncing that that's really good. Her kidnapping was partly opportunistic as she had. She lived near the S. L. A. Hideout. Um and according to testimony at trial, the group's main intention was the leverage the hearst family's political influence to free to estella members who had been previously arrested for the killing of Marcus Foster, faced with the failure to free the imprisonment, the S. L. A. Demanded that the captive family distributes $70 worth of food and every to every needy California, an operation that would cost an estimated $40,000,400 million In response. Hers family took out a loan and arrange the immediate donation of $2 millions dollars worth of food to the poor Of the bay area in an operation called people in need. After the distribution descended into chaos because nobody can figure out how to distribute any help to anybody. Even in 1974 um the SLR refused to release her. Now, according to hearst later testimony, she was held for a week in a closet blindfolded and with her hands tied. During which time the S. L. A. Founder and leader um going by the name sink but also known as Donald defreeze repeatedly threatened her with death so you can see the kind of what we were talking about going into this. Um She was let out for meals and blindfolded and subsequently began to join the political discussions. She was given a flashlight for reading and S. L. A. Political tracks to memorize. Hurst was confined in the closet for weeks after which she said DeFries told me that the war council had decided or was thinking about killing me or me staying with them and I was better thinking about that as a possibility. So they're already starting to convince her stay with us or you'll die. Um And then she immediately said I I accommodated my thoughts to coincide with theirs. In a different account. Her said that she had been offered the choice of being released or joining the S. L. A. So a lot of things interesting her um when asked for her decision her said that she wanted to stay and fight with the S. L. A. The blindfold was removed allowing her to see her captors. For the first time After this she was given daily lessons on her duties especially weapon drills. Angela Atwood told hearst that the others thought she would know what sexual freedom was like in the unit. According to her lawyer. Hurst was allegedly also raped by to freeze and William Willie Wolfe. So it sounds like sexual liberation was um disguised in the city. Yeah. Um She waited she later went on to commit several crimes with the S. L. A. Including a bank robbery in SAn Francisco and making improvised explosive devices. At the time of her arrest, hearst weight had dropped to £87.. And she was described by psychologist Margaret singer in October 1975 as a lo que que lo effect Zombie. Shortly after her arrest, signs of trauma were recorded her I. Q. Was measured as 1 12 where it had previously been at 1 30. I like how they keep track you know right? Like who was making sure of that? There were huge gaps in her memory regarding her pre oh I forgot to mention that she during this time she went by her chosen name of Tanya. So there are huge gaps in her memory regarding her pre tanny life. She was smoking heavily and had nightmares without a mental illness or defect. A person is considered to be fully responsible for any criminal action, not under duress and which is defined as a clear and present threat of death and or serious injury for her to secure an acquittal on the grounds of having been brainwashed, she would have had a completely, it would have been completely unprecedented at the time. So on March 20, Hurst was convicted of bank robbery using a firearm um during the commission of a felony. After initial judge died actually, he had given her 35 years, but then died before it could go through. She was given a sentence of seven years um in which of which she only served 22 months when President Carter commuted her sentence. She was officially given a pardon by President Clinton On his last day in office in 2001, strangely enough, she's gone on to be a pretty big actress and she has started, she become a favorite of john waters and has been on several films and television shows. So even though she had a crazy beginning to her life, she I guess reformed Good for you. Patty hearst good for you. It is strange though, because like it's not like the S. L. A. Went out there and was like, we Want $400 million. They were like, we want you to feed people. So it's just it's a bizarre story, but it is one of the most famous cases in the FBI of subsequent brainwashing. Well patty thirst, we're looking for. You were looking for you.
