10 part dramatisation of Graham Greene's pastiche on Don Quixote, and a sly dig at the Catholic Church.Due to a chance meeting with a foreign bishop, Father Quixote - he likes to think he is descended from the literary character - the village priest of a small village in La Mancha, is given the Papal title of Monsignor, much to the disgust of his own bishop. Encouraged by his friend, the communist ex-mayor of his village - whom he nicknames "Sancho" he seeks and is given permission by the bishop to take a holiday. He and Sancho head off in the priest's elderly car, which he calls "Rocinante". All goes well until Sancho insists that they must stop at a high class clerical outfitters in Madrid to buy purple socks - Sancho insists as a Monsignor, his friend must wear these. From here, there adventure goes down hill, as they are pursued by the paramilitary "Garda Civil", spend a night in a brothel and aid a bank robber. In parts humorous, towards the end the tone becomes more poignant.Bernard Cribbins and Philip Jackson are beautifully matched as Quixote and Sancho.
