Hello, everybody, it’s time again for another episode of the Faith Pest Control podcast, your pest podcast for North Georgia area talking about cities like Jasper, Georgia Ellijay, Georgia, Blue Ridge, Georgia and Ball Ground, Georgia and all the fine folks in Big Canoe. And today have on the episode again, as always our pest expert for North Georgia, Mr. Fred Talley. Fred, are you here, my friend?
I’m here, Mikey.
Well, you told me today you got some news about the problem of scorpions. You mean scorpions are in North Georgia, I had no idea. You know, what kind of problems do scorpions cause? You know, they’re really here. How dangerous are they? And, you know, what can you do at Faith Pest Control to solve the problem of scorpions.
So, Mikey, most people do associate scorpions with a more arid climate desert climate like the Southwest. But we do have a couple of species here in North Georgia. One of them strangely enough, is called the southern devil scorpion. And it’s been around for years here in the you know, we have I guess you would refer to it as somewhat tropical climate here. But they are here and they’re not necessarily harmless, but I think they look a lot worse than what they actually are, not that they sting. the sting is not necessarily painless, but you know, I have been stung by them because I get them in my house as well. But they it’s it’s kind of like a bee sting. Unless you have allergies to stings, venomous things such as that. It’s a nuisance more than anything else, it just kind of gets red and swells up. But like a honey bee or a yellow jacket or anything like that. There’s some people that might have an allergic reaction to the sting. It could be medically serious, but I personally have never encountered that. But regardless of their reputation, they typically are not aggressive unless provoked. They’re typically nocturnal. So they’re out at night. During the day, most scorpions will hang out and under leaf piles, under mulch. In stacks of firewood. In a pine straw is another place that they look kind of underneath it. They kind of like moist, dark, moist places they can and do get in homes around here on every level, not not just necessarily the basement level. I’ve never seen any study on this. It’s just more of an observation I’ve made in my time in the pest control business. But I think that we would perhaps have microclimates around our our homes, because I can have customers that are neighbors to each other one It seems to be a continuous issue with scorpions in other home will not even we’ll never have never seen one. And you know, housekeeping and quality construction seemingly equal. Again, I don’t have any real evidence of it just my crude way of thinking about things, observation. A natural prey of the scorpion is just other insects, or or insects a scorpion is actually an arachnid. It’s not a arthropods, which is an insect. The stinger on the tip of there is actually their abdomen, we all refer to it as their tail, but it’s their abdomen. And that’s where the poison is injected from and their pinchers are actually what they use to grab and kind of hold the prey and after killing it by injecting it, they kind of pull it apart and that’s how they eat it. And the males also use their stinger, the stingers and the pinchers to protect their territory, they’re territorial. Now females can give birth to 25 up to 80 offspring. Now they birth them one at a time. It’s not a multiple birth. A few months after mating. The babies will typically live on Mama’s back. I don’t know four or six weeks whenever they go through their first molt then they will grow a much firmer protective exoskeleton.
And then they, at that point, they leave their mother.
