Welcome to our epic ocean where critical solutions to a planet in peril are brought to the surface. Our epic ocean celebrates all that is epic about the ocean and why it is the planet's most vital resource and now to our host rich Gurman paul Hawkin is an exceptionally hardworking advocate for a better life on planet earth. He is a prolific writer, speaker, serial entrepreneur, environmentalist and has now taken a profound leadership role in the mission of reversing global warming in our lifetime through science education, solutions and action. After early success with the natural food company, a roan and the highly praised garden lifestyle company smith and Hawkin paul is now dedicated his life to elevating the conversation on subjects ranging from inequality and social justice, the importance of a renewable energy future and modifying the relationship between business and the environment. His previous book, project Drawdown is a new york times bestseller and it set the stage for the next chapter of his life and his newest book regeneration, which offers a visionary new approach to ending the climate crisis, highlighting justice, equity, biodiversity and human dignity as part of a social tapestry of action, policy and transformation. A man of many solutions, paul Hawkin, welcome to our epic Ocean is truly an honor to have you man, thank you Rich. Um and I want to say I did more than a lifestyle company. That was a garden company was the biggest garden company in the United States and I'm not saying garden lifestyle. Uh I missed a garden, that's what it became, that's when it became, It became a livestock company went out of business because it was a lifestyle business instead of regarding the company. And uh it went out of business in 2008 and we used to pray for recessions at Smith and Hawkin because when recessions happen, people stayed home and garden more and we were like the shoe repair business. We love recessions. And uh anyway, I just want to say uh I'm not interested in lifestyle. Uh it probably would have done well in 2020 if it was still around. So, um, I really appreciate being here and I'd like to break this conversation down into three sections. One defining what regeneration is and how it's important, ending the climate crisis to looking at some key issues related to the ocean and its role in carbon drawdown? Our show is our epic ocean. So we want to ocean focus. And then three, I always loved about you how optimistic you remain, especially in the face of such daunting daily news. So, I want to make sure that we leave people not only with hope, but tangible action steps that they can take. Does that sound like a plan? It does. I'll do the best. I can. You always do. I know you will. So, first of all, congratulations on your new book. I got my copy right here. Uh so let's start with regeneration 101. How do you define a regeneration and why is it so important in this moment in time? The first sentence of the book is regeneration is putting life at the center of every active decision. And so that's what it is as a process uh as a descriptor is what life does all life and we are the expression of life human beings. And uh it's the default mode of life is the default mode of our human body is the default mode of anything that's alive and carbon based And um so all 30 trillion cells in your body for example at this moment are regenerating every nanosecond uh and as soon as you stop scraping burning, poisoning, cutting whatever the earth, forest land, uh it goes immediately into regenerative modality. The reason the earth is so rich in resources and water and species and plants and biodiversity and everything is because life creates the conditions for life and um and that's what regeneration does. And so the um Mhm. The title is meant to bring people back to a sense of self that is inclusive of all of this beautiful earth, but also all of who we are as human beings. We're naturally regenerative, We care for each other, we care for our Children, we care for the places we live, we care for others in some cases we don't know but we we do things that are altruistic, you know, we are carrying species and the reason homo sapiens are here is because as opposed to the neanderthals? Um we actually cooperated, We work together, we love to solve problems together and this is who we are innately and so, rather than having a conceptual idea of, you know, fighting climate crisis, which is kind of a crazy of fighting climate change, which is even a crazier term, uh what I want to do is bring it back home and introduce an idea of thinking about the climate crisis for sure, in a way there was inclusive that was actually positive, that was celebratory, that was practical, really, really practical. Uh and something that was accessible and understandable to people everywhere. I love that you see.
