Officials relax restrictions on political demonstrations among athletes at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. For years, protests have been banned at the games. With protests still being restricted in some areas of the Olympics, what kind of demonstrations might we see at the upcoming Summer Olympics?
So the, the controversial issue about political demonstrations at the olympics Something which has actually been, it's been going on for as long as I've covered the Olympics, which is sort of the last 20 years. Uh, so they have actually relaxed it somewhat. The, I see that they've always been absolutely adamant, nothing can be allowed. But what they have now said is that you are allowed to make a demonstration or protest within certain parameters before the start of your event, but they're still bands anything. You're not allowed to take the knee on the podium. Famous black power salute that Tremie Smith and John Carlos did in Mexico 68 on their podium. That's still banned. So it's trying to sort of answer that demands from some of the athletes involved, but it's very much a halfway house, which is part of the course, as far as the is concerned, so, an athlete can take any at the start of competition, say on the start line, but not if they win on the podium after collecting gold. Yeah, as far as the IOC are concerned, the podium is the holiest of Holy Sacrosanct. Quite hard. They're trying to thread the needle, aren't they? Here, There is a lot of backlash they would have faced if they had come down hard. Given the current environment, social justice campaigns across the globe from from from, from athletes across across sports market, referred in the UK, tennis players, athletes across across the world. Be interesting what type of protests we see and whether they're going to all be allowed. There's so many different issues at stake and that will be one for the IOC 22 a pine and I'm sure they will give us something to write about as well.
