Japanese-born, USA-inspired, Kilara is a one-of-a-kind stand-up comic performing her craft in a conservative culture. In a country where people don’t typically talk about their problems and where it’s unacceptable to “poke fun” at others, Kilara has had to evolve and adapt her comedy into a “safe zone” for Japanese audiences. But, all that may be changing as the online world is rapidly bringing a diversity of opinions and previously off-limits conversations to the forefront of Japanese consciousness. 06:25 | Terry-Ann Live from Tokyo, meet Kilara, an English and Japanese stand-up comic and sketch comedy performer. Her credits and comic work include: Contestant on Asia’s Got Talent; Finalist on Flappers Comedy Club, Burbank, CA; Finalist on Who’s Got Talent, sponsored by Japan Connects Hollywood; and Guest on How Hollywood Eats Japan. 09:27 | Terry-Ann What’s the comedy scene like in Japan, pre- and post-pandemic? 12:30 | Terry-Ann/Kilara Pursuing comedy in a historically “serious” country … How the USA influenced my comic life … from Richard Pryor to my HBCU, VA influences, and how Chris Rock rocked my life. 14:25 | Kilara When my English gets better … and how I found my Japanese support group. 16:00 | Terry-Ann/Kilara The stark difference between Japanese comedy vs. America stand-up. Stay in your lane!  18:23 | Terry-Ann How do you switch and balance between what’s culturally acceptable between your vastly different audiences? 25:11 | Terry-Ann/Kilara A pink unicorn, or uniHORN? A message of diversity! 28:57 | Terry-Ann/Kilara How does a gal decide to do a whisky podcast?
