First we talk about Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

Then we hear from A.K., an autistic occupational therapist in Denmark.

A.K. said to add this in: “At the end of the interview when you asked if there was anything else I had to say, I spoke of my autism-specific difficulties, such as not being sure how to talk to people and not knowing what to do in social situations. This is in casual, unscripted situations. It may sound like it contradicts what I said about how I know how to perform in job interview situations and what to write in applications, but these are totally different situations. In a job interview, I know what to expect, and I used to memorize the answers I may need. I did this after hours of research and practice. It’s all part of masking, and it requires a lot of effort and leads to a meltdown afterwards. So, while I can figure out what’s required and can perform, it takes a huge toll on me. I just wanted to make that clear.

Another possible contradiction is that people who don’t know me well are sometimes surprised or deny I’m autistic, but those closest to me, who spend the most time with me, such as friends and close colleagues saw my autism before I did. They saw behind the mask. Now, I live mostly mask-free, and my mental health has improved dramatically because of this.”
