Transcript for Season 3 Episode 17 – Nicole:

Marci: Welcome everybody to This Podcast Has Autism. I hope you enjoy the show.

Bran: Hey everybody. Today we have Nicole with us. She’s going to be speaking with us. I’m going to turn the time over to her to introduce herself.

Nicole: Hi everybody my name is Nicole. I’m at autism mom of Brandon Lee, also known as Bash Lee. We’ve been in recovery mode since Brandon was about 2. In the process of that his artistic abilities have really blossomed and we have some information to share that I think will be helpful to other families that are looking for answers or looking for options and really trying to understand what capabilities kids with autism have. So we’re here today with our wonderful hosts and we’re glad to be here.

Bran: Thanks for that wonderful intro. How old was your son when he was diagnosed with autism?

Nicole: We noticed, I think, signs that he was not hitting his milestones when he was about 9 months old. I would definitely describe it to other mothers who are considering what’s going on in their households. That was my freakout moment because he wasn’t answering his name. The symptoms showed up a lot earlier than we actually got a diagnosis. We didn’t actually get a diagnosis the first time we wanted to understand what was going on, we didn’t get one. He was not diagnosed, as a matter of fact, we went to a developmental psychologist. It was considered to be like a specialist or expert in our area. We live in Oklahoma. And we actually sought out a child development center, a private child development center in Texas called the Johnson’s Center and that’s where we actually got our diagnosis. And he was pushing up on about 3 years old at that point.

Bran: Does life make more sense now that he has a diagnosis?

Nicole: No, not necessarily, because like I said I recognized something was going on with him, ya know, within that first week, I think. The first week of his birth because he passed out and stopped breathing and he was having trouble latching and I think it’s all been kind of tied to each other. I came out of the birthing experience with some concerns about his developmental capabilities from that point on.

I’ve always just had questions since then.

Bran: Does he need to stick to a routine?

Nicole: I think through the process of engaging certain holistics and everything we have kind of broken him from that need. There are still some things that represent a routine but for the most part life is going to throw you a curve ball at any time. I think we all know that. So we’ve always worked to try to get him to be able to be flexible. So not necessarily. There are some things he can be a sticker on but there are other things that, you know, we’re able to introduce change and he’s okay with it.

Bran: How old was he when he started drawing?

Nicole: We got an iPad for Christmas from my nephew. I think right at his first birthday. I didn’t pull it out because I didn’t really know how to use an iPad. It was actually
