While achieving success is wonderful, it is important to always stay humble, stay teachable, and approach the Lord with humility. The harder we work in training and in our faith the better our reward will be here on earth and in heaven.
remember that Asa was the one who cried out to the Lord when a million Ethiopians showed up to attack Jerusalem. This great army comes against him. And instead of entrusting in himself in his own army, I mean, he has an army. They are prepared for battle. They're ready for the fight. But instead of putting his trust in these things, he cries out to God says, Lord, help us meet our need. Here be our savior. And the Lord answers his prayer, and they defeat the Ethiopians that come against them. He did not place his faith in his survival upon himself, but upon the Lord. And when he cried out to the Lord in faith and humility, the Lord heard him. But now same kind of situation. Israel in the north comes against him. And instead of crying out to the Lord and seeking the Lord in faith, he turns to Ben Hadad from Syria for rescue. And he pays him off with a payment of silver and gold. And you just think that what happened in your earlier years you trust in the Lord Now, when your latter years you don't trust the Lord you trust your money and your success, and you just look at that. And you think, Lisa, what happened to you over the years? Perhaps it was his earthly success. Pride, his admiration of fellow men. Accomplishment, achievement? We don't know exactly. But something happens to ASA, and he turns his heart away from the Lord. Not completely, but he just He's not close to the Lord. He's not relying upon the Lord anymore. He becomes self reliant, depending upon his own ingenuity, to rescue him from danger. Now here's a loving warning to those of you who have had success in some area of life. You've been successful. And believe me, I'm not against success and not in any way at all. I'm not against achievement or accomplishment. In fact, I love these things. I think there are great things when they're done the right way with the right heart. But earthly success has such a way of tempting us to self reliance, to believe and trust on ourselves and our own intellect and our own intuition to trust our own strength, our own brilliance and our own aptitude. How can we, as Christians have earthly success and yet stay humble and teachable before the Lord. How can we do great things and yet still remain dependent upon God? That's one of the things that I want for this church. I do want us both as individuals and corporate Lee to accomplish great things. But how can we, as a church and as individuals, keep our hearts and our minds right before the Lord and still accomplish great things in this life and in this world? I want our young people here in this church to go great places and to accomplish great things. But I want them, like all of us, to remain fully and completely reliant upon the Lord and depending upon his mercy and his grace to do all that they do and at the risk of sounding like a broken record. I know I've said this before, but I'll probably say it many more times. Here's my advice. Stay in the word. Stay in prayer, stay in fellowship and stay in service to the Lord. If you stay in those places, you will stay in a healthy and right place with God if you continue in the Bible. If you continue to sit under the teaching of God's word and the reading of his word. If you stay connected to the church and in fellowship with other believers, if you serve the body of Christ, if you cry out to God in prayer, you can, I believe, balance earthly success and accomplishment with a right heart of humility and dependability upon the Lord.
