Show Notes
2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and a sound mind.”
Thank you for joining us for another episode of On the Ground with Samaritan’s Purse, hosted by Kristy Graham. In recent days, Samaritan’s Purse has been responding to simultaneous disasters affecting families around the world. Kristy Graham sits down with strategic leaders in the ministry to share updates on how we’re helping after Hurricane Ida in Louisiana, rising COVID-19 cases in Mississippi, the earthquake in Haiti, and the tragedy in Afghanistan.

First, Kristy connects with Luther Harrison, the vice president of North American Ministries. Over their brief Zoom call, Luther shares that while Hurricane Ida swept through Louisiana August 29-30, the ministry was standing ready to respond. Staff and disaster relief units were staged on the outskirts of the storm, and as soon as it was safe to do so, they moved into the hardest-hit areas. Now, Samaritan’s Purse staff, volunteers, and three Disaster Relief Units are on the ground to help patch roofs, clear yards, and salvage belongings from flooded homes.
“As we say, we bring in the equipment, but God sends the workers. We want God to send the workers that are able to be the hands and feet of Christ as we go out and minister to these families,” Luther tells Kristy. “Not only meeting their physical needs but most importantly their spiritual and emotional needs as well.”
Kelly Sites, the disaster assistance response team (DART) medical lead on the ground in Mississippi, gives the update on how Samaritan’s Purse is treating critical COVID-19 patients in the current global epicenter of the virus. Through our 32-bed Emergency Field Hospital, Samaritan’s Purse medical staff are providing surge capacity for the University of Mississippi Medical Center healthcare workers. Kelly explains that our Samaritan’s Purse nurses, physicians, and paramedics are providing comfort to fearful patients battling the virus. Tune in to hear how one patient came to know Jesus Christ through a Samaritan’s Purse paramedic.
Next, Kaitlyn Lahm, who serves on the communications team at Samaritan’s Purse, sat down with Kristy after her recent trip to Haiti after the earthquake. Millions of Haitians were affected by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake and are now struggling to find safe living conditions, clean water, and urgent medical care. In the hours following the earthquake, Samaritan’s Purse responded to the hardest-hit areas by providing emergency shelter, clean water, and a 36-bed Emergency Field Hospital. Kaitlyn shares a story of how Samaritan’s Purse helped treat a grandfather who was injured after saving his two granddaughters as their home was collapsing in the earthq
