Resolutions 2021 | Audio Guide to the Keto Diet The ketogenetic diet is a food plan that reduces caloric intake and energy acquired from carbohydrates, placing the emphasis instead on proteins and fats. This process forces the body to burn fat rather than carbs, and has shown to positively affect those with diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's. When cutting out carbohydrates to such a degree, your body enters a metabolic state known as "ketosis," which efficiently burns your body's fat, and converts said fat into ketones in the liver, a process that supplies energy to the brain. The diet has shown to be effective for many people, but there's a lot to understand before committing, and you should always consult a doctor before committing. Join Vurbl as we bring you snippets from podcasts from nutritionists and health experts to give you a better understanding of the keto diet. Vurbl Wellbeing & Happiness Audio

talk about the differences. First, let's talk about Keto, since that is like what everyone has seemed to fall in love with, Uh, at the moment eso the ketogenic diet dates back to the 19 twenties. It was created to help people with epileptic seizures, you know, who couldn't respond to the medication. And so the diet was based on the process of ketosis, in which the body uses key tones for fuel instead of glucose and ketones are basically the byproduct of fat metabolism that air utilized in times of starvation, carbohydrates, traction or excessive exercise. So for the body to reach a state of ketosis calorie intake has to be limited and comprised of 80% fat. That's the typical, um, when I broke it down in the video, that's, you know, in the link to this, um, episode, I call out a 60% fat because that's how the Vegan Keto people are doing it. Because they are vegans who are doing keto, um, and are saying that they're, you know, getting great results in terms of losing fat fast. Um, but they're doing 60% fat on DSo anyway. The remaining calories air supposed to come from low carb vegetables and proteins. And once key Telesis begins, usually within a few days of implementing the diet insulin levels drop, causing the pancreas to start producing glue. Coogan Glue Kogan determines the rate at which key tones are produced and sense the body into fat burning mode, which is why the diet has gained recognition as a means for weight loss. That's basically the science behind how it's happening, right, so the diet is customized individual needs and usually is maintained for extended periods of time. It's advised that the first day and night be a period of fasting, and the diet can be gradually introduced over a couple of days so that the body has time to adjust. Each meal is carefully measured, including fluids and a daily multi vitamin and mineral supplements are imperative. Potential side effects include dehydration. So on the Keto diet, you're you're going to see a lot of people drinking lots of our okay, Okay, Yeah, that's one of the one of the major things about it. That's what actually, one of the things that I like about it is that it really encourages lots of water drinking. Um, but so does intermittent fasting as I go on a zai, you know, stated on that video, um, and potential side effects of keto also include constipation, vomiting, high cholesterol, which off course high cholesterol because you're consuming. So if you're not doing vegan Pito, you are consuming cholesterol from other sources. The body already makes its own cholesterol. And so, if you're doing, if you're trying to reach 80% fat, you're going to do that through meat and dairy, right? Which which are the foods that are included are allowed on this Keto diet. And, you know, so you're gonna end up with high cholesterol because those foods have cholesterol. Um, uh, animals, yeah, animal fat, dairy, even fish has cholesterol. Um, kidney stones is another side effect of the keto diet, which makes sense. Any diet that has you eating lots of meat is highly acidic. Will put you at risk for kidney stones. So, um, you know, um, one of the side effects that the Institute of Integrative Nutrition says eyes from the Keto diet is behavior changes, which I don't know if that's negative or positive. You know, um I don't know, uh, some it's a possibility because when you change your diet, your chemistry, your body chemistry plus you're the some cells in the brand. If I'm not mistaking, you could research it and see it also make changes to Yeah, that's true. That's true. Um, and then the high fat to like Like when you talk about the brain because I know that there's some people who are doing keto because of the benefits that are that have been, um, promoted for people who are suffering from Alzheimer's or Parkinson's or any of those kind of brain deterioration um, issues, Um, just high fat content, you know, it is showing to help folks. I must I wanna put in there, though, that, um, intermittent fasting also helps with those issues. Well, um, let's see what else? Um Oh, yes. Other side effects. Slower growth rates and Children. Pancreatitis, which is basically inflammation of the pancreas. Um, excess fat in the blood. Which, of course, if you're eating high amounts of meat and dairy, um, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, it says. And those deficiencies are coming from the fact that, um ah, high carb vegetables and fruits beans are not allowed on the keto diet, so you're missing some some nutrients there some vital nutrients there. Um, so as a result, individuals on the diet need to be closely monitored by an experienced team of practitioners. And so, honestly, if you decide to do Keto, I would highly recommend you do it the vegan way. And like I said, my friend Liz McDowell, she is She works with clients. Um, she has been doing this herself for a long time, and you can reach out to her her informations in the interview that I did with her, which is in the link, um, to the in the show notes of this young lady from Canada. Yes, yes, yeah. Um, So the ketogenic diet is primarily recommended for Children with epilepsy. That's what it was created for, uh, as there have been numerous studies showing the reduction in seizure rates. And it's shown to be more successful for Children than adults because parents are able to carefully supervise the food intake. And this approach does not work unless it's followed. Exactly. And, um, if you read, Liz is book on vegan keto. You know, you'll learn a lot about you know how you have to do testing because you want the goal is to get into ketosis and so to see if your body's in ketosis, you have to test, you know? So they have these different testing kits and things, um, to see you know what's going on and because of all of that regiments and stuff, I personally, um, well, there's a few things Why I personally I'm not a fan of Kato, even for me personally doing vegan Keto. There's too much that you have to do. Like the testing part. You can't just intuitively eat, and I just feel like that's too restrictive for me personally. And secondly, Thio eat even 60% fat is really difficult for me, but what would be the first for not to cut you? But what would be the purpose off someone doing a keto diet? How do not not have in, Ah, problem Like you said. For the kids who suffer with procedures, what's the purpose of adults doing it? So ah, lot of people have been talking about quick weight loss with Keto diet, but I want to tell you right now that, um, you can have depending on the type of what you're trying to lose, Like if you are overweight, Right? According to the charts, the medical charts, Not your own perception, because our perceptions really can be deceiving sometimes. But according to the medical charts, if you are overweight, okay, for your size, for your height, Um, an age and gender and all of that, um, then, you know, doing of whole foods vegan diet mean you're cutting out refined sugar, refined, like processed foods. Right? You're cutting out. You're cutting out meat and dairy. You will lose. Um, you should lose about £2 a week, and that is still healthy. Toe lose and get to a normal size. Um, this is not This is ah, your normal, healthy weight for your body. Um, which for everyone is going to be different. Right. Uh, but this is not about getting toe like, I don't know ripped a rips for Zeke. We're just talking about a healthy weight, right? Healthy weight loss? Yes. If you're trying, t o might be a little slower, but healthy. Healthy? Exactly. So? So you'll lose £2 a week, which is healthy and more than that, you know is really not recommended. Um, but if you're looking for, like a ripped physique. Then intermittent fasting really is where you're going to get the bank for your book. You know, Andi, also alleviate the pressure is on your digestive system from all that eating. So me personally, like, I don't feel keto to be necessary. But, you know, all these different diets have their appeal because there's something that people want to continue doing that they're not ready or willing to relinquish. And Soto find something that will fit what they're already doing, you know, has them are attracted to it Now, on the keto diet, these air, the foods that you can eat, right? This is for regular keto. Okay? They're eating. Meets their eating poultry, fish, eggs, dairy. They're eating nuts and seeds, but nobody because beans are not allowed, they're eating healthy oils. They're eating low carb vegetables and low carb foods. Fruits. And so the low carb fruits is very like minimal. Right you're talking about varies and not much other than that. You know, uh, they are supposed to avoid high carb vegetables, high carb fruits, grains, which I'm not mad at that because you know, grains. I don't think we're supposed to be eating grains, and I've talked a lot about that. Um, beans, they're they're avoiding sugar. They're avoiding trans fats and processed foods there.
