IN THE DREAM HOUSE by Carmen Maria Machado, read by Carmen Maria Machado Carmen Maria Machado narrates her memoir chronicling an abusive relationship with her former girlfriend with a steady, vulnerable voice. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Emily Connelly share their thoughts on a compelling memoir from the National Book Award finalist (HER BODY & OTHER PARTIES). Machado and her then-girlfriend, “the Woman from the Dream House,” fell into an intense relationship. She covers the heady emotional terrain of events from their first meeting onward using brief chapters, from many perspectives, breaking through the “archival silence” of women’s accounts of abuse, particularly between queer women. Carmen Maria Machado on 'In the Dream House' Carmen Maria Machado joins me to discuss her memoir 'In the Dream House.' 'In the Dream House' is Machado’s wildly innovative account of a relationship gone bad, and a bold dissection of the mechanisms and cultural representations of psychological abuse. Tracing the full arc of a harrowing relationship, Machado struggles to make sense of how what happened to her shaped the person she was becoming. That struggle gives the book its original structure: each chapter is driven by its own narrative trope―the haunted house, erotica, the bildungsroman―through which Machado holds the events up to the light and examines them from different angles.
8 - Carmen Maria Machado Carmen Maria Machado's genre-bending short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, has met with widespread acclaim. Shortlisted for the American National Book Award and the International Dylan Thomas Prize, it demolishes the borders between magical realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. Startling narratives map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited on their bodies, both in myth and in practice. It is a dark, shimmering slice of fiction, that reminded reviewers of Angela Carter. We caught up with Carmen in the summer of 2018 in Edinburgh, where she was appearing at the book festival, and asked her to tell us about books she loves and the bookshops she can't resist. Carmen responded with a brilliant selection of books with one thing in common: they are all retellings of myths. Her Body and Other Parties is published by Serpent's Tail and out now in paperback from all good bookshops.
