Interview #23: Our Brain is Divided (with Dr. Iain McGilchrist) Iain McGilchrist is an author, speaker, psychiatrist and former Oxford literary scholar. McGilchrist came to prominence after the publication of his book The Master and His Emissary in 2010 which concerns the differences between the right and left hemispheres of the brain. His new book The Matter with Things, which concerns epistemology and metaphysics will be out November 2021. Iain McGilchrist: The Divided Brain Dr Iain McGilchrist began his academic career as a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, teaching and writing about English literature.  In Against Criticism, he expressed his misgivings about the academic study of literature, especially its neglect of how individual, embodied beings encounter the unique, incarnate work of art. He studied philosophy, trained in medicine, and became a psychiatrist. He has since twice been re-elected to Fellowships at All Souls, has been a Research Fellow in Neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins, and a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at the Bethlem & Maudsley Hospital. He works privately as a psychiatrist in London.
His latest book, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, explores the different versions of the world which are made available to us by the cerebral hemispheres, and their influence on the history of ideas and of philosophy in the West.

**Love Itself Special** with Dr. Iain McGilchrist Love is what moves the sun and the other stars...My guest this week is Dr Iain McGilchrist. A Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and former Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director at the Bethlem Royal & Maudsley Hospital, London. He has published original articles and research papers in a wide range of publications on topics in literature, philosophy, medicine and psychiatry. He is the author of a number of books and is best-known for The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World. This book is a product of 20 years of research and which I believe to be one of the most important books of our time. Could the problems in the modern world be influenced by an imbalance in the human brain? And how do the left and right hemispheres of our brain differ and make sense of the world? We discuss the divided brain, and why it has such an important meaning for us today. I wanted to know whether we all have this damage to our right hemisphere, and what it means if the left side of the brain dominated the right. I questioned my response to beautiful music - is this experienced through the right hemisphere? - and we talked about the three things which make the right hemisphere stand out in its contribution to the human experience. Because this is love itself, we also talked about the things which make a flourishing relationship, what we might call "the soul", and how we can accept both our dark side and the failures within ourselves in order to become succesfull, balance human beings. The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain with Iain McGilchrist This episode touches on a pioneering account that sets out to understand the structure of the human brain – the place where mind meets matter. Until recently, the left hemisphere of our brain has been seen as the ‘rational’ side, the superior partner to the right. But is this distinction true?
Drawing on a vast body of experimental research, our guest argues that while our left brain makes for a wonderful servant, it is a very poor master. As he shows, it is the right side, which is the more reliable and insightful. Without it, our world would be mechanistic – stripped of depth, colour, and value.
We welcome the author of The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, Iain McGilchrist

How has the divided brain shaped the modern world? In conversation with Iain McGilchrist Nick Spencer speaks to Iain McGilchrist about brains, minds, cultures, and God.
Humans see and understand the world in different ways, ways that appear to map onto the brain’s function and in particular its hemispheric nature. But how has that ‘attention’ shaped the world we live in today?
Nick Spencer talks to the former Consultant Psychiatrist and author of 'The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World' about brains, minds, cultures, and God.

#198 The Matter with Things (with Iain McGilchrist) This week I spoke to one of my favourite guests on Under the Skin - Iain McGilchrist. Iain is an author, psychiatrist and former Oxford literary scholar. He came to prominence with his publication "The Master and His Emissary - The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World”. His latest book is called “The Matter With Things.”This is a fantastic podcast that discusses Iain’s work, the differences between the left and the right hemispheres, but also much more than that. We delve into some deep philosophical discussions about how we perceive and understand reality, God and the mystical; how being a spiritual person really is “no picnic;” and we speak about therapy, psychiatry, and the challenges we face when trying to help one another.
