Deconstructing Spiritual Practices, Embracing New Paradigms We start a new series today focused on Ben and Matt’s forthcoming book Having the Mind of Christ: Eight Axioms for Cultivating a Robust Faith. Ben, Matt, Gino, and Christy will respond to each chapter over the next few weeks, discussing how they’ve practically worked out the principles and practices in the book in their lives and leadership over the past several years.

Today we talk about the introduction to the book: “When Faith Stops Working.” We discuss the insufficiency of spiritual practices apart from a transformed paradigm of who God is and how God works in our lives and in the world.
You can pre-order Having the Mind of Christ today and get 30% off + free shipping by using the code GRAVITY on IVP’s site.

You can also join our Book Launch Team for exclusive access to conversations and learning labs about the book (as well as some other cool perks).

Brandon O’Brien: How We Misread Scripture With Western Eyes What was clear to the original readers of Scripture is not always clear to us. Because of the cultural distance between the biblical world and our contemporary setting, we often bring modern Western biases to the text. Ten years ago Brandon O’Brien co-wrote a book on this topic that we have recommended more than any other of the years: Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible.Brandon joins us to talk about why it’s vital for us to get beyond our own cultural assumptions in our interconnected and globalized world and learn to read Scripture as a member of the global body of Christ.
Brandon O’Brien is the Senior Director for Content Development and Distribution at Redeemer City to City, and author of several books including Not From Around Here: What Unites us, What Divides us, and How We Can Move Forward and Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes: Removing Cultural Blinders to Better Understand the Bible.

Jay Augustine: Modeling Justice, Diversity, and Inclusion as the Church Nationally recognized speaker and church leader Jay Augustine joins us to offer a prophetic call to pastors, church leaders, and students to recover reconciliation as the heart of the church’s message to a divided world. Jay’s book Called to Reconciliation: How the Church Can Model Justice, Diversity, and Inclusion examines the intersection of the salvific, social, and civil forms of reconciliation through an engagement with Paul’s letters, the Black church, and social and political movements that seek justice for those marginalized by racism, class structures, and unjust legal systems.

Jonathan “Jay” C. Augustine (JD, Tulane University; DMin, Duke University) is a reconciliation scholar, ordained minister, and professor. In addition to serving as senior pastor of St. Joseph AME Church in Durham, North Carolina, and as national chaplain of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., he is also a missional strategist with the Duke Center for Reconciliation and a professor at North Carolina Central University Law School. Augustine often speaks on topics related to race, reconciliation, diversity, and inclusion and has received numerous national awards and recognitions for his work in civil rights and social justice. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from President Barack Obama, the National Bar Association’s 40 Lawyers Under 40 Award, and Ebony Magazine’s 30 Leaders of the Future recognition.

Rob Dixon: Women and Men Flourishing Together Women and men are designed to work together in fulfilling God’s mission on earth. Yet God’s original intent for equal partnership has been so distorted that churches and organizations continually struggle to foster healthy mixed-gender ministry collaboration. Is it even possible to return to the Genesis ideal of co-laborers in today’s contexts?
Longtime ministry leader Rob Dixon knows it’s possible, but it takes intentionality, courage, and wisdom. We talk with Rob about his new book Together in Ministry: Women and Men in Flourishing Relationships. Based on field research with active ministry partnerships, Rob's work explores how to develop individual and structural commitments to foment healthy and vital relationships among men and women.

Shane Blackshear on John Perkins: Peacemaking and Transformation Shane Blackshear had the privilege of forming a friendship with his long-time hero: civil rights leader and minister, John Perkins. Over a series of years John became a mentor, and they had numerous conversations as Shane wanted to know from John what leading a life faithful to Jesus Christ actually looked like.
What followed was a series of vulnerable and heartfelt conversations between John and Shane and their reflections on those conversations. John's words and advice are distilled into nine axioms for peacemaking and transformation in their book Go and Do: Nine Axioms on Peacemaking and Transformation From the Life of John Perkins.
Shane hosts the popular Seminary Dropout podcast. You can connect with him on his website, or on Twitter.
