July 24th MESSAGE | Made for More Series | Sunday Service | Mountain View Church What we believe matters. Who we believe in matters too! It really is the foundation of our faith. But what about Jesus believing in us? Jesus was often referred to as Teacher. Ask yourself this question, “What does it mean when the teacher believes in the student?” It’s a simple yet profound question that should cause each of us to pause and consider what it truly means to receive the love of Christ. In the Gospels, we see Peter tell Jesus that he would walk on water to come to him. Jesus believed Peter could, commanded him to “come” and Peter did! Jesus believes in us—He believes in you—and He has made you for more. What an encouragement! Can you imagine a world where we believe in ourselves as much as Jesus does? It is possible and it’s available to us all. Follow along with us as we continue in our series Made for More and learn how to experience the abundant life that Jesus has for us. July 17th | Made for More Series | Sunday Service | Mountain View Church Last week, we discussed the truth that Christians are made for more than just “salvation” or being “saved.” We’re not diminishing the incredible gift of salvation made possible by the love of Jesus, in fact we celebrate every salvation story just like we celebrate the birth of a child!

Birth stories are so great because they all have elements of hope, love, struggle and overcoming. And even though you are central to your own birth story, your mother is primarily responsible for that part. But birth is just the start of your story. Believe us when we say, you were made for more great stories! As we mature in our lives, we have greater authorship over the stories we are telling.

There are certainly parallels here for Jesus-followers: even the phrase “born again” implies the beginning of the story! You were made for more than your salvation story, as great as it is. Most of us desire to turn all of our stuff—the good, the bad, the ugly—into great stories, and to be remembered well in history. Here’s the amazing thing we will explore this weekend: Jesus has given us the secret to co-authoring great Kingdom stories, and he tells us how we can be remembered well in His story.
See you Sunday!

We are all on a journey with Jesus — both as a church and as individuals. And that journey is full of beautiful things and hard things, times of victory and times of seeming defeat. In all of it, God is present, working, moving and speaking. The question is, do we believe it?

If we’re being honest, all of us have wrestled at some point or another with trusting God. We’ve been frustrated with discontentment or disappointment. This Sunday, we will spend some time relearning how to still ourselves, recognize God’s presence and provision in the journey, and trust his work of redemption in our lives.

In reviewing the story of Moses sending spies into the land in order to then make a plan to move into a new future for the people of God, one can’t help but be taken by the fact that, when it comes to significant challenges, there are basically 2 kinds of people: (1) those who are crushed by the challenge and (2) those who are energized, excited and motivated by the challenge. Having read the rest of that story, another way to put it might be that there were those who didn’t believe God could possibly be for them and those who were convinced that God could not do anything but be for them. Those who complain about the fact that they have been led to face a challenge and those who celebrate the opportunity for a new future because of that challenge.

What is Mountain View Church’s most significant challenge? What is her greatest threat? Well, Pastor Art thinks it’s MVC’s only real challenge – her most likely threat. What is it? That’s the topic for this Sunday’s message. Come at 8:45 or 10:45 to find out. But be forewarned … you’ll likely be encouraged and excited by what you hear.

If you have children, there’s a good chance they’ve taken it upon themselves to bless you with some “street art” – only they probably didn’t make it all the way to the street before they started drawing! Why would they have gone through all the trouble to get outside when there was a perfect, white wall to use as a canvas right there in the living room? And, of course, your little Picasso(s) decided to “bless” you on the night before your landlord was scheduled to come for her annual inspection. “No problem,” many a well-intentioned rookie has said, “because I just happened to save some of the paint I used on that wall and it will certainly have time to dry overnight once I repaint it.” Problem solved, right? Wrong! Next morning, the red pencil composition was there laughing at you … as though you had done nothing to it at all. So of course, you apply a second and then a third coat, only to be mocked again by the seemingly permanent artwork.

That’s when you call a seasoned veteran “homeowner with young, creative children” and learn that pencil marks on a wall can’t simply be covered over with layers and layers of fresh paint – that they must first be sealed by something strong and effective enough to squelch them. Only then, you discover, can a fresh coat of paint be effective.

The same is also true with the stains that have been created in our own lives … on the walls of our hearts and souls. They can’t simply be hidden, covered over by layers and layers of fresh paint. They must be dealt with by a process that’s strong enough to squelch them – quarantine and seal them – render them ineffective and powerless in their attempt to destroy our hope and even hinder our sense of God’s presence.

June 12th | MESSAGE | Prayer and Presence Week 7 | Mountain View Church Welcome to Mountain View Church! Make sure you are subscribed so you get notified about future livestreams and please share this message with someone who needs it right now. It’s the season of weddings! After pandemic delays, I’ve been invited to several weddings this summer. Each invitation I’ve received reads “Your presence is requested” instead of “You’re invited.” Both phrases have the same general meaning, but the former, beyond feeling more proper, is also more specific: your presence – that is, your physical body – is desired to be at the wedding. “You’re invited” seems optional… if it works for you, if you can fit it in, if it’s not too much trouble. On the other hand, “You’re presence is requested” is an appeal: the bride and groom believe your presence is essential and will make the occasion even better. You don’t just attend the wedding. You are a part of the wedding. As we continue our sermon series on Prayer AND Presence, we will be exploring how God, through the Spirit, compels us to be a part of His plans. Pillars of cloud and fire must have been a welcome sight for Israel during her forty years of wandering in the wilderness. Each served not only as a visible reminder of God’s presence, but also a compass, showing them exactly which direction to go and at what pace to move. Must have been nice, right? (Okay sure, it was a desert wilderness, certainly no picnic … but at least the people knew each day what the next day would bring in terms of where they should go! And, even more importantly, they were assured of the fact that it was God himself who was leading them.)

Our own “exiles and wildernesses” are rarely about literal wanderings (we have motorhomes for that) yet they are still very real and can be quite severe: I don’t know what’s happening to my family … I just lost my job, now what? … or, in our church’s case, So much is changing and unknown – what will MVC be like a year or two from now?

Here’s a fact – a biblical fact: all those questions we ask during our exiles and wanderings are actually various “lunges” toward – or graspings at – the presence of God. And, short of having a “pillar of cloud by day” and a “pillar of fire by night” to reassure us that God is with us during these nebulous seasons of life, his presence is discovered and experienced through the asking of important questions.

As a church, we have decided that we’re going to take God’s invitation into prayer and presence this season. It’s risky. It’s meaningful. It’s beautiful to God. It’s the harder road, but the road to God’s best. The one that will lead us to the places of depth and impact that can only happen when we are open to God’s presence with us. We’ve spent the last few weeks focusing on prayer, but what does it mean to seek God’s presence? What does it mean that His presence, His Spirit, is with us and in us?

For some, what comes to mind when they think about Holy Spirit is “crazy” Christians, outbursts of wild behavior, or maybe even moments of insensitivity that have caused harm and wounding. For others, they might think of Holy Spirit as being for the “extra spiritual” Christians. It’s great for some, but not needed by all.

While there is mystery with God’s presence, there are also some tangibles that God has given us in Scripture so that we can learn to say yes to the invitation of Holy Spirit every day of our lives. We can’t wait to seek His presence together this weekend!
