What are you worried about? In this episode of The Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I have a question for you…

…why are you so worried??

I want to know why so many people get so caught up in the lies they keep telling themselves that they actually prevent themselves from being successful. I want to stop that negative chatter. I want you to be successful! A lot of the lies people tell themselves have to do with onboarding new people to help them inside their business. Lies about outsourcing duties to other people. And I get it. I’ve been there, I’ve done that, I’ve bought the t-shirt. We know it is important to learn from other people’s mistakes. I’m going to share with you the mistakes I have made and the mistakes others have made.

Highlights:

The lies you tell yourself:
No one can service my clients like I can.

No one knows how to do the things I do.

I have a special way of doing things.

It’s a waste of time to train someone – It would take longer to show someone how.

No one will care as much as I do and they will let me down.

I don’t have time to chase people.

I have hired before and it didn’t work out, so it never will.

In vs On Working Smarter NOT Harder! In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, we will discuss the difference between working IN and working ON your business. As overgivers, we tend to focus a lot more of our time working IN our business, for example making our clients happy. Sadly we end up neglecting working ON our business, such as business growth tasks. Having happy and satisfied clients is wonderful, but if your clients leave (for whatever reason) you will be strapped in on the FRANTIC PANIC roller coaster searching for new clients. Balancing the work IN and ON your business is what will keep you off that roller coaster.
Highlights:

What is working IN and working ON your business?
Both aspects are essential for your business.
There will always be ups and downs in your business. You don’t want to have massive downs, little blips on the radar are ideal and less stressful.
Balance does not mean 50/50. There will be times when working in your business takes up more time than on your business and vice versa.
Your business is not your baby. Your business is your business.
Do not overcomplicate your business plan (put the GPS down). Your plan is simply the direction your business compass is pointing.
The more successful your business becomes the bigger it becomes and therefore more tasks. The more money your business generates allows you to hire team members so you can focus on your circle of brilliance.
Just because you can doesn’t mean to say you should.
My Geeky Girl business would NOT be able to operate at the calibre my clients deserve without my team. I simply do not have that many hours in the day and I am NOT a robot. I dedicate my daily hours to work and LIFE.

Always make sure that you’re working on our business and in your business. Make sure that you are working smarter, not harder. Work in your circle of brilliance as much as possible and outsource the work that isn’t. Build that amazing team so you can create an amazing business. I wish you a fantastic week!
Time Blocking for Success In this episode of The Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I’m excited to talk about time blocking for success. Time blocking seems to bring out the quick reaction of “love it” or “hate it” in people. Often the technique is taught in a very “systematic and square” way, so I was wearing the Team Hate t-shirt. I found it restrictive and it hurt my creativity. That being said, I am now on Team Love It because I now understand how to make it work for me. I have found that time blocking is a great tool for many things. I am excited to show you how to think about the concept differently and realize that it is going to make your life so much easier!
Highlight:

Time blocking is a time management method that allows you to divide your day into blocks of time.
Focusing on work on your business is really important. We will always make time for our clients, but that isn’t enough.
There was a time when I believed that time blocking was restrictive. BUT once I figured out how to use it differently, I would be lost without it!
Time blocking isn’t a lifelong lesson, experience or adventure.
By moving the blocks around, I discovered WHEN I work at my best. Writing a blog post in the afternoon took me so much longer than it did for me to write it first thing in the morning. My brain is clearer in the morning. That is how my neurodiversity works. I didn’t realize this until I started to actually block out these timepieces.
I have also learned that four hours of work per day is my max.
This taught me so much about myself. Now I don’t need to time block quite as intensely, because I just know when to put things in my day.
I understood what needs to be done and when I am at my best, so I blocked my life accordingly. My tasks have become easier and faster to complete.

Start playing with your calendar and find your sweet spots of productivity and creativity. We are not machines!. I hope that you find time blocking improves your work day so you can find more time to do things that bring you joy.
Are you ready to build a team? In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I want to ask you a question. Are you ready to build a team? I don’t have the answer and you might not either, but let’s just peel the question apart like an onion. I’m going to ask you some questions, and share some ideas so you will have a better picture of what building a team looks like and what it could mean for you.
Highlights:

Building a team can be as simple as hiring somebody to do one task that requires them to work an hour a week, hiring somebody full time, or even hiring three people. There are lots of different ways teams are created.
The personal development industry needs you to believe that you’re not enough.
The idea that you’re supposed to become superhuman and that you can do more than your body can handle is problematic.
If you’re listening to this podcast and you are an over-giver, the hustle culture will never be for you.
Recognize that your goal is not to be superhuman, not to juggle all the plates and not to do EVERYTHING. Your goal is to create a business that supports you.
There’s always somebody out there to hire to do the tasks that you hate (and do them much better than you because you hate them LOL)
If your team members are having trouble, find out why. They may simply need extra training.
If you become a spoke rather than the hub of your business wheel you will discover that this is where the magic occurs.
Your business needs to thrive whether you’re there or not. Everybody needs a holiday.

I encourage you to free yourself from others’ expectations, stop listening to what you “should” be doing inside your business, and create your own version of success that you’re striving for. Honour the success you have created, because you have created success! You have reached many levels of success in your business, but now it is time for a “new success”. It is time to build yourself the most amazing dream team in which you are a spoke and not the hub. As a team, your business will thrive and you will see that next level of success and bask in the glory of it! Trust me.
You can be successful AND put yourself first! In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I want you to understand that you can be successful AND put yourself first. This isn’t an either-or situation, you don’t have to choose, you can literally have both. We have all had moments where we have had to push through, and work hard and fast in our businesses. That ability has value, but it’s not a long-term “work mode”. When we continue to live in hustle mode and are putting ourselves last on the list, we’re never actually going to be successful. Why? Because we’re constantly putting out fires…. Not to mention burnout. So let’s talk about it for a bit.
Highlights:

Being over-givers means that the hustle culture is definitely not our culture.
The cycle of the over-giver.
It is really important to understand that without proper boundaries you will deplete yourself. Burnout is going to lead you to your downfall, hating your business, wondering what the hell you’re doing and why you shouldn’t “just get a job” because what is happening is just as painful as a job.
There’s a difference also between over-delivering and over-giving.
Boundaries are there to protect your time from other people, but also to protect you from yourself.
After you set boundaries, it’s important for you to reinforce them.
If I don’t reinforce those boundaries, others will continue to believe that it’s okay to do the actions that I don’t want them to do.
Just because you have boundaries, it doesn’t mean that those particular boundaries are there forever. Remember that you can always alter your boundaries to what suits you.
We aren’t human doings. We’re human beings.
When you know where you’re going, what your goal is, and what it’s going to take to get there – you can start making your plan.

Take your goals and break them down into plans. Then break those out further into quarterly to monthly calendar goals. These are all going to be a part of your non-negotiable list. Now you are going to complete the actions that you broke down…over and over again so that you can actually hit those goals!!
How? You set up boundaries!!! You chose what kind of business you want and how to run your business by putting together a plan. With the help of boundaries, you are reaching the success levels that you strive for while putting yourself first.
BRAVO!
How to create a business that works for YOU! In this episode of The Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I am excited to talk to you about how to create a business that works for you. We're going to talk about a few things that you may not have thought of in terms of your business and what you want it to be.

Highlights:

It's essential for you to think about what you want to enjoy in your daily life.
As your life changes, and if your goals change, your business has to change too.
Be open, willing and flexible to think about making changes for yourself. You can build a business that makes you money and allows you to live your dream life.
There are times when we need to work our butts off. We have less time for fun and more time for work. In my opinion, the hustle culture is not something that you can sustain for long periods of time.
If you don't allow yourself time to regenerate and re-energize, you will affect your health and fall ill.
If I don't look after myself, my body will inevitably give me no choice.
Creating your ideal vision of your business is really important.
The worst thing that you can do inside your business is believe that just because an action is working for others means that you have to do the same as they do.
You don't have to hire a full team. You don't have to go from nobody on your team to 10 people. You can build slowly.
Building your dream team that you want to be part of is going to make a massive difference in your business.

The key to creating the business that works for you is to make sure you're being really honest with yourself. You are putting things into action that will work for you and not what others are saying you should do. Choose to create the type of business that you want. Don't be afraid to create an amazing team. Choose that culture that you want your company to have. Then you can bring in highly skilled people with the “right bums for the right seats” and you can spend more time in your circle of brilliance. Look after yourself. Rest. Recharge.

That is how you build a business that works for you.

When your team can do this, it will free you up to do what you want to be doing in business In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I want to talk to you about making sure that you have a team that not only supports you and allows you time to do what you want inside your business, but also enables you to have a life you want. It is important for you to serve the people you want to serve and to help the people that you want to help. It is important that you are focused on your own business and be able to do the things that you want to do.

Highlights:

When you first started your business you had to do everything including the shit work.
The truth of the matter is that you cannot do “it” faster.
You have to get past the notion that you can do “it” faster and better than anybody else. You just can't, there are too many things on your plate, things are falling over the edge and you do not have help to pick up the pieces.
You need to focus on doing your circle of brilliance tasks.. These are tasks that you shine at doing. You are so good at them that they take you no time to complete and you love doing them!
Working in your circle of brilliance helps you make sure that you are doing things that are right for you.
You cannot make more money on your own. You've created your own glass ceiling by not having a team.
A by-product of having a team is that you can have more time. Therefore more time allows you to work on your circle of brilliance and grow your business generating more value for your clients.
When you're moving into that “hub mode” where everybody needs to check in with you, you will slow things down by creating a bottleneck.
You need to build a team that is able to support you while you're on holiday the same way that you support your team members when they are on holiday. That's the trust you need to work for.

This is why your team isn't making you money (it's not what you assume) In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I want to talk to you about why your team isn't making you money. It is probably NOT what you assume. Working with business owners who are building teams and reworking their existing teams into teams that they love is definitely a passion for mine. I love building great teams, I love being part of great teams. It is something that comes naturally to me. So I want to share this with you so you can too.

Finding that balance between micromanaging and “letting it go” is crucial. If you need help, you know where to go ;) Send me a message at clientcare@geekygirl.ca and I can help you out. We can build you the most amazing team so you can grow your business to the size that you want and have the life that you've always dreamed of.

Your team is a business asset (and that doesn't make you an asshole) In this episode of the Overgivers Anonymous Podcast, I want to talk to you about your team, and how your team is an asset to your business. Dare I say it's a business asset. This statement doesn't make you an asshole. When you think about your team being a business asset, I’m not talking about seeing people as office supplies or robots... Think about your team as a massive benefit to you and your clients. Then think about how you can be a massive benefit to your team.

Highlights:

It's important for you to make sure that you have team members who are the “right bums in the right seats”.
One of the biggest problems that I see with business teams is that they contain people (who may be great people and can do great things), who are not working within their Circle of Brilliance
Team members also need to be really, really clear about your expectations of them.
Make sure that when somebody brings an issue to you that you are willing to actively listen.
Seek first to understand, before being understood. Yeah, Stephen Covey!!
The reason why it can be difficult to truly listen is that our brains generally are trying to formulate an answer before the other person has finished speaking.
When you hire somebody you are going to make sure that they're the right person. You need the right bum in the right seat. Then you're going to make sure that all expectations are clear on both sides. You are going to make sure that you invest in them.
When you have your business set up properly with processes and procedures, and a system that you can walk your new team members through, it will cost you less to onboard new people and to onboard people into new roles.
If you don't have processes and procedures and systems in place it could cost more to onboard people. Once you get the processes and procedures and systems in place, it will take less time and money.
