#090 Markus Frey (Kendo) - Finland Markus Frey is from Helsinki, Finland, and has been training for over 30 years. He holds the rank of Kyoshi 7-Dan, was a member of the Finnish National Team as participant and coach, and is currently preparing for the 8-Dan test when the pandemic has sufficiently reduced to allow for travel to Japan.

In this fascinating conversation, we speak about his start in Kendo, the similarities in mindset and reinforcing benefits of budo and other creative/professional practices.

Juandiego holds the rank of 3dan in Kendo and 4dan in Kyudo, and is the founding director of the Ecuadorian Kyudo Association.

In this wide-ranging conversation, we explore Juandiego’s journey in budo, ripe with ups and downs, including his involvement in several Empty Mind Films projects, and the days in Sendai during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.

Looking towards the future, we talk about ways of improving communication in Budo, and how Juandiego is approaching the subject of making Budo content be more accessible for people all over the world, regardless of their mother language and where they practice Budo.

Kostyantyn holds the ranks of 5-Dan in Kendo and 2-Dan in Naginata, and is a Professor at the University of Customs and Finance

#086 Tim Macmillan (Kyudo) - USA Tim Macmillan is originally from England, and now living in La Honda, California, USA. He holds the rank of 5-dan in Kyudo, and is the Vice President of the Redwood Kyudojo.

In this wide-ranging conversation, we talk about starting Kyudo in the UK then moving to Japan on a whim. Tim takes us on a bit of a behind the scenes look at the training of Yabusame and Ogasawara Ryu, and how to overcome a near debilitating medical condition to regain a high level in budo.

#085 Sean "Hiro" Ow Yong (Kyudo) - Malaysia Sean “Hiro” Ow Yong is from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and has been training for over 7 years.

Hiro Ow Yong holds the rank of 2nd Dan and was accepted into the special budo program at the International Budo University in 2019; one of few who participated over the age of 30.

Due to the COVID pandemic accommodations had to be made, and in this wide-ranging conversation, we talk about his experiences in both Malaysia and Japan.
